Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: The amazing Bubbysbub as always spent time beta-ing this for me

Chapter Twenty-Seven
The tire iron flew through the air like a javelin straight at Dawn. Everyone was frozen in the split second moment, they could not get there in time. Then one figure acted with single minded determinedness, Dawn Summers could not be hurt, she had to be protected above all else. The tire iron plunged into Faith’s upper chest as she fell to the floor, having thrown herself in front of Dawn. Dawn watched shocked that someone she barely knew and had always been frightened of had done that for her. Dawn crawled over to Faith, needing to be near the person who had saved her life.
“Faith,” Dawn yelled.
“Get back,” Anne warned trying to pull the girl back behind her.
“Nice catch. Is that the best you little crap-gnats can muster?” Glory gloated as Faith pulled the tire iron out of herself with a grimace of pain, it had been a long while since she had an open wound. “'Cause I gotta tell ya, so not impressed.” Glory walked forward between where Tara and Willow were standing. They each threw a handful of glittery powder over the hellgod. The powder fluttered down on to Glory, covering her hair and body.
“Look what you did to my clothes, you little…” Glory began, she didn’t like her designer things being touched or mucked up in any way. Willow ignored her instead clapping her hands she yelled,
“Discede!” Glory exploded in a cloud of dust and was suddenly not there. At the same exact moment Willow fell to the floor.
“Willow!” Tara cried, concerned for her lover as she rushed over. Angel who was still standing looked from one unconscious lover to the other, attempting to work out who to go to first, his choice was made for him as Wesley and Xander slowly untangled themselves from each other and stood.
“Spike!” Xander took to steps towards Spike having already seen that Angel was standing, before he felt his legs go from underneath him. Angel caught his human lover effortlessly and together they made their way towards a still unconscious Spike. The peroxide blond had had too many close calls recently. As they cradled the unconscious vampire between them Cordelia looked over at Willow and Tara.
“What did you do to her?” Willow was panting and her nose was freely bleeding from the exertion but she still managed to answer.
“Teleportation spell. Still working out the kinks.”
“Where'd you send her?” Wesley asked curious already wanting to figure out how long it would take for her to get back to LA and start hunting them down now that she knew for certain that they were there.
“Don't know. That's one of the kinks.” Willow admitted before almost collapsing into Tara welcoming arms. Wesley walked slowly over to them, he still felt like an unwanted outsider when it came to the Scoobies but the ice had seemed to thaw a little since he had stood up to the Watcher’s Council, and he wanted to show his appreciation for what the young Wicca’s had just done.
“That was an incredibly ... dangerous spell for an adept at your level.” Wesley tried to let the admiration he felt blend into his voice as he and Tara helped Willow stand up.
“Yep. Won't be trying that one again soon.” Spike managed to sit up and found his arms full of Xander as Angel checked him over for bruises just as he had to Xander. Angel could be a broody mama bear sometimes. Faith and Dawn were sitting on the ground together.
“Are you okay? Did she hurt you?” Faith asked concerned for Dawn.
“Why do you care?” Dawn asked, she didn’t know why she was pushing this point, she should be glad that someone did care but she felt an overwhelming need to know why.
Because I love you. You might as well be my sister,” Faith answered figuring out how she felt as she answered Dawn.
“But I'm not.” Dawn insisted oblivious to everyone else watching the scene unfold.
“Yes you are.” Faith gently placed her hand on Dawn’s head where blood had seeped through the bandage. “Look, it's blood. It's the blood of Slayers.” Faith wasn’t sure how she knew this but she was certain that the monks had made Dawn out of the blood of Slayers. Faith pressed her hand against the tire iron wound on her shoulder, wincing a little before clasping her bloody hand in Dawn’s bloody hand.
“It's just like mine. It doesn't matter where you came from, or, or how you got here. Through our blood you’re my sister. There's no way I’d care for you this much if you weren’t.” Faith revealed, she wasn’t used to caring for others, having had to look out for herself her whole life she had learnt early on that caring for others only got you hurt. Wesley had been watching like everyone else silently but now his curiosity got the better of him.
“Faith how do you know that the monks made Dawn out of Slayer blood?”
“I…I don’t know, I just do,” Faith answered staring at Dawn again. Dawn stared right back, she could feel a connection with the dark slayer as well and did not doubt her words. Angel helped his lover’s up and moved over to the two entwined girls sniffing deeply.
“Do you smell it Spike?” He asked after a long moment, it was amazing what a vampire could smell through a person’s blood.
“Yeah, I do, you’re right Slayer, the two of you are connected.” Spike told Faith. Just then there is a loud groan as Anne sat up. The first person she saw was the peroxide blond that she had seen fighting Glory but Anne hadn’t had a good look at his face. She did now and recognised him immediately.
“You!” She accused and fainted.
“What’s that all about?” Cordelia asked.
“Dawn where did you meet her?” Willow asked sure their was something familiar about the unconscious blond.
“A car hit me and drove off, she helped me up and brought me to the hospital, stayed with me the whole time. Said her name was Anne,” Dawn replied, wondering why Anne had fainted now when she hadn’t before. Xander went to pick up the young woman, after her helping Dawn they weren’t going to just leave her there but then he saw her face clearly and gasped.
“Shit, I know why she fainted, remember those vampire worshipers in Sunnydale? She was one of them, must of recognised Spike,” Xander babbled, he hated thinking about his boyfriend hurting anyone. Spike walked over to them and softly moved her hair off her neck. He looked down at his mark on her neck remembering the taste of her sweet blood.
“Yeah, that’s my mark, bet she never expected to see me again.” With that Spike gently lifted the chit into his arms despite having been hurt in the fight. Angel chose not to comment, but instead drew Xander close to him as they made to leave the room.
“Come on.” Faith helped Dawn to stand up as everyone tiredly made their way to the door, Willow leaning heavily on Tara.
“Wait. Ben. He was here, he was trying to help me. He...” Dawn could clearly remember Ben fixing her head, taking them to the nurse’s locker room but after that it got hazy. “I ... I think he might have left before Glory came ... I can't, I can't remember.”
“Who’s Ben?” Angel asked.
“The doctor who looked after me when mum was first taken into hospital before Buffy could get there.”
“Wait a minute, was this in Sunnyhell?” Spike asked surprised and immediately suspicious.
“Yeah, why, what’s wrong?” Dawn asked before Cordelia and Faith reassured her, urging Dawn to leave the room. The three lover’s exchanged glances, it was too big a coincidence for Ben to have been in Sunnydale and now in LA, they would have to look into him, hopefully they didn’t have another enemy on there hands.

Joyce immediately pulled her daughter into a hug as they walked through the doors of the Hyperion. Joyce had been so scared, her mind coming up with horrible scenarios.
“You are in so much trouble, young lady,” she scowled after she had finished hugging the stuffing out of Dawn.
“I’m sorry mum,” Dawn replied hugging her mother again.
“Well that’s just not going to cut it,” was Joyce’s response as they trudged up the stairs together. Spike placed Anne on the couch as Angel turned to address Cordelia and Willow.
“I need to find out as much as we can about this Ben from the hospital, I know we don’t have a last name but how many Ben’s can there be who have both worked in Sunnydale and here in the time period we’re talking about?”
“Can’t we have five minutes to check our nails before…”
“Cordelia!” Angel growled.
“I’m on it, I’m on it,” she yelled as she stormed into the office. Gunn wheeled out of the men’s room and over to where Xander was checking on the unconscious woman on the couch.
“Who’s… Holy hell, Anne? What happened?” Gunn demanded as he recognised the blond.
“She found Dawn, took her to the hospital, do you know her?” Gunn didn’t understand half the explanation Xander had given him but just decided to give with, he’d get explanations eventually.
“Yeah, known her for a couple of years, she set up a safe house for teen runaways, was one herself before that, said that a girl helped her get on her feet so now she’s repaying the favour by helping other teenagers.” Willow had been listening to the conversation and now a fuzzy memory began to focus.
“Anne,” she breathed quietly.
“What’s that Wills?” Xander asked.
“I just worked out her name,” Willow replied as if her answer made complete sense.
“Um… mind speaking English, Red?” Spike asked.
“Remember that summer Buffy ran away to LA.” At their nods she continued. “well a while after Buffy told me that she had been using her middle name, Anne and that when she left a girl who she knew took over the persona.” Angel looked at the young woman laying on the couch, another person who’s life had been changed for the better because of Buffy and not just because she was the Slayer. Angel remembered how Buffy had never realised how many people she had helped through just being herself, not because she had superpowers or battled evil.
Angel watched everyone bustle around and patch up wounds. Spike and Xander were both busy helping out and that was how Angel wanted it. By the time they realised he had disappeared it would be too late to track him and both his lovers were still healing. Even though Xander was much better, he’d be able to take off the bandages soon. He wasn’t hiding from them or leaving them, nothing like that. He was however, going to go after Darla.
She was alive and that was something Angel needed to rectify. Darla was a threat but she was also a past that Angel felt he needed to deal with on his own, without his well meaning lovers. This was a battle he had to face on his own, having his lover’s there would only be a distraction as they tried to protect him from something they couldn’t shield him from. No matter how much they had shared and how well they knew each other, neither of them understood his sordid relationship with his Sire, not even Spike who was very human in a few crucial ways. He had never loved her but their was a deep connection there, she had moulded him, made him into the formidable, malevolent Angelus. For that Angel loathed and hated her while a part of him cowered at her maliciousness. That was the reason why Angel had to face her on his own, he was weak and afraid that he would wither in the face of her cold beauty. For his lovers to see him sunken so low would destroy any self-worth Angel had managed to accumulate over the last few years, which was why he was sneaking out of his own hotel to go murder Darla.
*****
Angel knew that the only way he was going to find Darla in a city teeming with people was through the task in front of him but he wanted to run or hide. Angel would have rather slaughter a tribe of Dooko demons who sprayed flesh eating boogies at their opponents than this. Angel had no illusions over his abilities and knew that Spike was much better suited to the task in front of him but unfortunately only Angel could do this to find Darla, Spike couldn’t. Besides, Angel didn’t want Spike to know what he was up to so Angel was on his own. Angel sighed then reluctantly picked up the microphone and started to sing.
"Everybody have fun tonight - everybody Wang Chung-fun tonight, everybody Wang Chung tonight, everybody have fun tonight, everybody..." Angel watcher as the crowd completely turned off as he massacred the song in front of him. Angel wanted this over and done with as quickly as possible but it seemed to go on forever, ‘surely the Host would have read what he needed to by now,’ Angel thought. Angel abruptly hit the off button, he had had enough and it seemed that the audience had as well. He needed to find Darla NOW and then get back to the hotel, hopefully before they realised he had gone.
"I'm very sorry." Angel apologised for his appalling singing into the mike before striding off stage and making a bee line for where the Host was sitting. As soon as Angel reached the host he was down to business, just like he was the last time he was here.
"Tell me about Darla." The Host didn’t even feign surprise at this direct approach, he had read enough angst off Angel’s performance on stage to sink the Titanic.
"Woah. Give me a sec. You are sending out some family-sized vibes. My fillings are still humming.” Without looking away from Angel the Host held out his glass for refilling. “Hey, Rico! Top off my sea-breeze, earn my everlasting devotion, huh?” Focusing back on Angel the Host began to tell Angel what he needed to know. “I saw lots of things. You are at a crucial junction, big guy."
"So talk."
"So, no." The Host answered while bracing himself for the explosion.
"What do you mean 'no.' You won't tell me anything?" Angel was angry he had humiliated himself publicly so that he could get answers or at least an address and here this bright green lounge singer had the infuriating nerve to not tell him anything.
"I tell you you're headed into trouble with a capital 'troub.' Let her go, bro. That way lies badness." The Host urged Angel knowing that he was wasting his breath but needing to at least try anyway.
"What do you care? You got murderous demons in here. You give them free advice, but you won't help me." Angel tried dirty tactics attempting to appeal to the Host’s conscious.
"Hey, I set people on their paths, okay? And this is way off your path, sweetie. Go home. There are two luscious boys waiting there for you and you should be in their arms instead of on this wild goose chase."
"Tell me where Darla is." Angel menaced leaning in closer and ignoring the twinge telling him the Host was right and he should just go home to Spike and Xander.
"I know you're not gonna start anything in here. You're a good boy.” The Host stood up, this conversation was at an end. “Have a drink before you go. It's on me." With that he left, shaking his head wishing that just this once the brooding avenger would go home. It would save himself and those around him a world of pain.
