Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: The amazing Bubbysbub found some time out of her RL to beta this for me.

Reviews: LadyVirgo1956 - Yes Angel respects his lovers too much to get rid of his frustration with them when they didn't create it. I have to admire how the Julie Benz portrayed the total bitch that was Darla, cos yeah not even Faith and Buffy together during that time of the month comes close. As for who the gentleman is there was a clue earlier in the fic and I'll give you another, usually he wouldn't be called a gentleman. As for if he'll be seen again, only my muse knows as I didn't plan his involvement but he keeps sneaking in there.
Sagant - Glad to know your still downloading and I hope you enjoy it when you finally get to it. As for being consistent, thanks I try cos I know how annoying long waits are.
Daeomae - Thanks for your loyal support as usual and yes D&L have their work cut out for them but I can't tell you if they suceed or not you'll have to keep reading.
A/N: A big thanks to Jenn for allowing me to use some of her ideas evident in Playing Games. Buffyworld is back! A big thanks to Howard Russell for bringing such a wonderful resource back online. This chapter is dedicated to LadyVirgo1956 for helping to find a fic I wanted to read.
Chapter Twenty-Five
The Scoobies and AI members trooped into the Hyperion hotel emotionally drained, they were all looking to have a couple of companionable drinks before an early night. Well, everyone except for two notable exceptions. Angel was still disturbed about the dream and was even more determined to go looking for his Sire alone as soon as he could sneak away. Dawn shouldered her way through the crowd and rushed up the stairs towards her room.
“She’s still pissed off, ha?” Cordelia asked Joyce watching the stiff retreating back.
“Yeah, its going to take her awhile to come to grips with the fact that she is only a couple of months old. Everything else that’s been going on doesn’t help either.” Joyce replied sinking down into a couch with a sigh of relief, it had been a tough day for the still recuperating woman. No parent should have to bury their children.
“The bit will come round,” Spike tried to reassure them, “she just needs some time.” Spike waved his hand in front of Angel’s face, Spike didn’t want his lover to go into a major brood fest, it wasn’t healthy and they had too many other things to deal with. The group in the lobby fell into silence, all reflecting on those whose funerals they had just attended. Wesley opened his mouth to say that he was glad that he had known the fallen when a shrieking alarm was heard all through the building. They were immediately on alert glancing around attempting to assess the threat but there was nothing. It took a second before Faith realised who wasn’t in the foyer, who could be in danger upstairs.
“Dawn,” she yelled and took to the steps four at a time the vampires right behind her and the others slowly making their way up behind. They rushed through the hotel, slamming to a stop just inside Dawn’s room where it was evident that there was no attack, no monsters and the alarm they were hearing wasn’t mystical induced. Xander moved past his flammable lovers and quickly smothered the fire in the trash can while Faith peered out the window marvelling that a non-Slayer girl could have shimmied down the drainpipe.
“Is she nuts, does she know how dangerous it is in LA for a fourteen year old girl out alone at night even without demons, Wolfram and Hart and Glory?” Cordelia ranted, she didn’t even like driving home alone at night and that was with the doors locked, a stake, holy water and pepper spray.
“We have to go after her, she could be anywhere.” Joyce insisted. She could not bare to think of her youngest daughter facing all kinds of dangers on her own.
“Don’t worry Joyce, Spike and I will be able to track her down if we leave now. Wesley Gunn, Anya and Joyce stay here and don’t let anything in, the rest of you suit up, we need to leave now.”

Dawn had been wandering around LA absolutely shell shocked. She could not think, too much had happened in the last little while and her brain had gone into meltdown. She had no idea where she was but she wasn’t actually aware of her surroundings locked in the memories of the past few weeks of losing her sister, who wasn’t actually her sister and how many of her memories of Buffy were fake? Her whole life was a fake and everyone around her knew it, Buffy had known it and yet she had still protected Dawn, died protecting Dawn, as had Giles, and why? It wasn’t like she was something special. Had they just done it to stop Glory or had they done it because it was Dawn? And if they had done it because it was her they were protecting, why? She wasn’t real. She wasn’t worth it.
Anne ambled down the steps at the front of the teen shelter intent on getting the last box of donated clothes out of the back of the truck when she heard a car horn and the screech of tires. She looked up to see shocked as a young teenage girl was hit by a passing car. The girl bounced onto the sidewalk and the drunk guy in the car yelled obscenities before driving off. Anne stood rooted to the spot in shock for a moment, it was seeing the body on the other side of the road move a little and then groan that sprung her into action.
“Clair,” she yelled into the house behind her before sprinting across the now deserted road to the injured girl. Anne skidded to a stop beside the unknown girl just as Clair stuck her head out of the teen shelter.
“What’s up, Anne?” The dark-skinned assistant asked.
“Hit and run,” Anne answered absently as she quickly went over the first aid steps in her mind.
“Shit!” Clair responded before sprinting over as well. “How bad is it?”
“This head wound will need stitches but otherwise she got off very easily, we’re going to have to take her to the hospital though.” Anne stared down into the face of the now unconscious girl, taking in the manicured nails and well dressed appearance. Somewhere out there this girl had people who cared about her, a family. So why was she wandering around in this neighbourhood by herself?
*****
Anne helped the young girl into the emergency ward at the hospital. The girl had regained consciousness just before they had pulled into the parking space but had so far refused to say anything except to insist that she could walk on her own. Anne wasn’t going to go though, until her family had come or someone else to take care of her. Anne knew of too many kids who would disappear as quickly as possible, herself included, because family life was the opposite of the Brady Bunch. But this girl was showing none of the usual signs of abuse and Anne didn’t want her to end up on the streets just because she didn’t like one thing about her life.
Dawn looked around at the full emergency waiting room and wished that she wasn’t here. She was fine really, she just wanted to keep walking but the woman next to her had insisted that she would need to be checked out. They made their way to the triage and as soon as the nurse saw them, with blood freely flowing down Dawn’s face, they were ushered through to a waiting bed. An intern was sent to them as Anne helped Dawn onto the bed.
“Now what can I… Dawn?” Ben gasped as he finally saw Dawn’s face. “What happened? Why are you in LA?” Ben asked, efficiently cleaning Dawn’s wound while talking to her, attempting to distract her from the pain. Dawn just stared off into the distance not talking to either of the kind people around her, her life was in turmoil and she couldn’t even start to make sense of it. Ben quickly finished cleaning and bandaging Dawns cut but he didn’t like the vacant expression that was gracing Dawn’s features.
“How well do you know Dawn?” Ben asked the girl that had brought Dawn in.
“I… I don’t. I witnessed a car hitting her and driving away so I figured she needed a doctor. Is she going to be okay?” Anne asked not sure what was happening around her.
“The head wound was only minor but I think something else is going on, she has a loving family, she shouldn’t be wandering around by her self.” Ben knew that he needed to get back to work, someone else would need the bed but he also wanted to help Dawn. He made a decision.
“Look I’m due for a break but someone else will need this bed so why don’t we go to the nurses locker room and try to find out what’s going on?”
Anne looked the male nurse up and down, he seemed genuine and she would rather be there to make sure Dawn was fine. Leading the life she had made Anne distrustful of everyone, particularly people who were usually deemed trustworthy such as doctors and nurses. They quickly make their way to the locker room an unresisting Dawn between them looking for privacy so that they could maybe find some answers. As soon as the door closed Ben went looking for a hot drink while Anne led Dawn to a seat and knelt down in front of her.
“You okay sweetie?” Anne asked, sweeping Dawn’s hair out of her face. Dawn decided that as she was freaking these nice people out she might as well answer and act as normally as possible so that she would be able to get out of here.
“I’m fine, thanks for helping me but I’m great now, I’ll just go.” Dawn babbled but before Anne could answer Ben interrupted.
“Two steaming cups of chocolate goodness courtesy of ... whoever I swiped it from out of the cupboard.” He handed Dawn and Anne a mug before sitting down at the little table. “Couldn't find any marshmallows. I'll try to steal some for next time.”
“Don't like 'em anyway.”
“What? Is that even possible?” Ben asked to try and draw out Dawn’s sense of normalcy.
“Too squishy. When I was five, Buffy told me they were monkey brains, and I…” Dawn suddenly realised what she was saying, her sister was dead and the moment she remembered hadn’t even happened. Buffy wasn’t even really her sister. She was the outsider.
Dawn, is your mum in LA? Is that why you’re here?” Ben asked wanting to get to the bottom of the problem. For once something was distracting him from his own issues.
“No.” Dawn answered bitterly caught up in her thoughts of how she didn’t belong, wasn’t a part of anything. “My mum's just fine.” Dawn could see the irony in that a couple of days ago all she had wanted was for her mum to be well. And now she was but Dawn had lost her anyway, had never really had her.
“Is there anybody I can call? Your sister?” Ben asked puzzled as Anne watched.
“I don't have a sister.” Dawn replied marvelling in the truth of the words, it was like she had lost Buffy twice over, once through death and once through finding out that Dawn herself wasn’t real.
“Oh ... you two have a fight? It's okay, I know how that goes. I got a sister too. They can be a real pain sometimes.” Ben tried to reach out to Dawn, hoping to find some common ground. “I tell you, there've been a lot of nights I wish she didn't exist either.” He pushed on when Dawn suddenly looked up at him.
“She’s dead but she’s still not my sister. Though even though she’s gone she still existed.” Dawn sighed before continuing, Ban looked shocked and the stranger wasn’t showing any reaction. “It's me. I'm the one that doesn't exist.”
“Look, I know it can feel that way sometimes, but when you're older..” Ben began leaving the whole death of Dawn’s sister thing alone. He was starting to feel that maybe he had gotten in under his head and it might have been better to have found a trained therapist to talk to Dawn as she seemed to have enough issues to send anyone into therapy.
“No, you don't understand. It's not real. None of this.” Dawn gestured wildly at her own body before continuing. “They made it.” She didn’t know why she was telling an almost stranger who would probably think she was nuts but she had an urge to tell someone who didn’t know and the two people in front of her just happened to be there.
“Dawn..” Anne began trying to work out how to get through to this obviously upset teenager but Dawn interrupted her.
“I'm nothing! I'm just a thing the monks made so Glory couldn't find me. I'm not real.” Ben stood shocked. ‘Holy Mother of Texas,’ he thought to himself. This was not what he was expecting.
“You're the key?” He asked already knowing the answer. Anne looked from one to the other not understanding what was happening.
“How do you know about the key?” Dawn demanded. Quite freaked that this intern knew anything about what she was, this intern that had also been in Sunnydale, was he following them?
“Go! Before she finds you. Don't ask me how she knows, 'cause she always knows. Just go.” Ben insisted knowing that she might have signed her life away by telling him what she had.
“Wait! Calm down, just tell me…” Dawn still wanted to know what being the key meant and if Ben knew then she needed him to tell her no matter how much her instincts were telling her to run.
“You don't understand, you're a kid.” Ben yells becoming increasingly agitated. Anne grabbed Dawn’s hand as they stood up. “You stay, she'll find you. She finds you, she'll hurt you.”
“What's wrong with you?” Anne asked ready to call for security, it seemed as if the sane intern who was willing to help her wasn’t as sane as she had originally thought.
“Dawn’s what she's been searching for. I am telling you, run. You don't know, you…” Ben could feel her like cold fingers creeping up his spine. He peered round nervously knowing that she was close. “Oh god. Oh god no, she's coming.” Dawn and Anne were petrified, who was coming? “I can feel it, you've gotta get out. No ... oh no, she's here!” Ben grabbed Dawn by the arm and she screamed at the contact. “She's here!” Then Ben just wasn’t there, he was gone, poof but someone was still holding Dawn’s arm. A permed blonde super strong crazy hell god was holding the keys arm and she didn’t even know it. Glory was in the building.
“Hey, who are you?” Glory asked as she took in her surroundings and the girl who she had a grip on. She released the plain girl ignoring her and the other girl while attempting to locate Ben’s locker in what was obviously the nurses change rooms. The women could run but Glory knew should could catch them up in a blink of an eye and maybe have some fun with them before killing them for no other reason than that they had been talking to Ben. She didn’t like it that her brother had friends when she didn’t, but right now she had bigger problems.
“Ugh, cotton!” Glory quickly peeled the disgusting fabric of her body. If she had her way all the cotton in the world would be burned and the fabric would be outlawed. “Could a fabric be more annoyingly pedestrian?” She reached inside Ben’s locker wondering what the other hospital staff would say if they had a peek in this locker. “Now this is what I'm talkin' about.” Glory pulled out a red silk blouse and pulled it over her head. “Makes your skin sing.” She worked the kinks out of her neck before turning round to an empty room but with the door still flapping shut. “That’s better, now I can go hunt some people.”
