Chapter 24
“Excuse me,” Spike said rather loudly in hopes of stopping
the chattering of the adults in front of them. Joyce took Buffy’s hand and
started to pull her away so Spike held tight to her. “Everybody be quiet for a
moment, please.”
He was surprised when they did. Everyone in the room stopped
talking as they all turned to stare at him.
“Uh, sorry if I shouted,” he said. “But I just want you to
know that Buffy and I are getting married no matter what you say.”
“Excuse me,” Hank said. “That’s my little girl,” he held his
hand up when Buffy started to say something. “Let me finish, okay?”
Buffy nodded, “Say whatever you want to, Daddy, but I’m
still marrying him.”
Hank stepped closer to Buffy then covered the linked hands
of his wife and daughter with his own. “Are you sure, pumpkin? I know I haven’t
been the father you’ve needed but don’t do something rash just to get back at
me or as a means of escape.”
Spike stepped back so that Buffy could make her own
decision. There wasn’t anything else he could do and still be a man. He’d be
there if she needed him, but this was her call to make.
“Daddy, you’re right,” Buffy said, with tears welling up in
her eyes. “You haven’t been the father I’ve needed. All I ever wanted was to
please you and I never could. It’s really hurt, but I’m grown up now. This last
year I had to learn to make it without the support of my parents. No one else
was there that I could really count on and then I met Spike. He loves me just
the way I am, stupid, silly, smart, or ambitious. He loves my good side and my
bad side. That’s rare and I’m not letting it go. I’m marrying him. I’d like it
if you would stay. Maybe one day we can work on patching our relationship, but
it’s time for me to make my own life.”
Hank and Joyce looked at each for a moment before they
turned back to their eldest daughter.
“All right, Buffy, I’ll stay,” Hank said. “May my first act
of trying to be a better father be the one of walking you down the aisle?”
“Yes,” Buffy said, rushing to hug her parents.
It was a moment that filled Spike with good feelings.
Memories flooded him as he watched the women whisk Buffy away to get her ready
for the ceremony.
“I need to do something,” Spike told Lindsey, before heading
outside the building. He took a deep breath and pulled his cell phone out. It
took almost four rings before someone answered the phone. Thankfully it was the
voice he wanted to hear. “Hi, Mum.”
“William, my dear boy, how are you?” His mother said in the
voice he knew she reserved for him.
Spike could hear her rustling around as she settled in
somewhere to talk to him. His impulsiveness had led him to another moment when
he knew that he would hurt the only one to ever stand by him no matter what.
This should have been planned differently. Both their families should be here
to watch the union. He rubbed his eyes as he wondered if he should call this
off until the time was right.
“I’m fine,” Spike said. “I’ve got really big news for you.”
“What’s that?”
“I’m getting married,” he said.
“Congratulations, son. This is Buffy that you’ve become
engaged to, correct?”
His hand covered his face as he realized he needed to
straighten out the confusion of his words. He was surprised to feel the tears
on his cheeks. His mother wasn’t going to be the only one disappointed because
she couldn’t be there. He wanted her with him to witness the biggest event of
his life.
“No, mum…” Spike started to say but was interrupted by his
mother.
“It isn’t Buffy? Who are you engaged to then?”
“Mum, listen to me for a second,” Spike said, with a sigh.
“It’s Buffy but what I meant is that we’re getting married now. We’re in Las
Vegas.”
“Oh,” was all she said.
“Mum, I’m sorry. It all happened so fast. It’s just the
right thing for us to do,” he rushed out hoping to fix some of the damage he’d
caused. “I love her so much and she needs the security of knowing I’m
completely committed to her. It’s what I want to do, too. She makes me so
happy. It’s like she’s brought the sunlight back into my life.”
“It sounds like you’ve made a good decision then,” his
mother said softly. “You have my blessing.”
“Thank you, Mum, I really needed to hear you say that,”
Spike said over a sob that threatened to choke him. “You’re the best.”
“Of course I am, I’m your mother and don’t you ever forget
it. Now, let me speak to your bride to be.”
“Hold on,” Spike said, hurrying back into the building. He
looked around for Lindsey, spotting him flirting with one of the attendants.
Rolling his eyes, he grabbed his friend’s shoulder. “Look mate, I need you to
take my phone to Buffy.”
“Isn’t she getting dressed or something?”
“Yeah, she is,” Spike said. “Isn’t your girlfriend helping
her?”
“Thanks pal,” Lindsey groused, taking the phone from him. “Maybe
you should look for a new best man.”
“Nope you’re stuck,” Spike called after him. He laughed as
he shook his head. His hands finding their way to his hips as he contemplated
what he was about to do. And he found he couldn’t find a single doubt within
him. As soon as Lindsey returned he grabbed his friend in a bear hug. “I’m
getting married.”
“Yes sirree you are,” Lindsey said, returning the hug. He
reached over to pull Angel into the group hug. The three started laughing
together in celebration. This was what life was supposed to be Spike decided,
friends, a good woman and an optimistic future. Everything was looking good for
him.
~~~~~~~~~
Buffy was afraid that she would wake up at any moment. That
she’d be back in her bed at her parents’ house waiting for the next criticism
or fight that would chip away even more from her soul. Tears kept threatening
to spill over and ruin the makeup that Cordelia had applied with such
expertise. She whispered a prayer that this was real, that Spike was really
waiting on the other side of the door, holding her heart with such tender love.
Nothing in her life had prepared her for this measure of
joy. Not only were her friends and sister fussing over her to get her ready for
her wedding but so were her mother and Mrs. McDonald. They had brought a dress
that Buffy originally planned on wearing to her senior prom that she had ended
up forgoing because Spike wouldn’t be there. It was a strapless white silk
piece that clung to her every curve. Her mother had brought her own wedding
veil that just brushed against her shoulders.
When she looked in the mirror she was a bride, a grown up
woman, ready to face the future with hope. Nothing would ruin her life with
Spike, she vowed, she would face whatever came their way with grace. He would
be the most important person in her life.
“Buffy,” Dawn interrupted her reverie by handing her Spike’s
cell phone. “It’s his mother,” she mouthed.
“Oh god, oh god, oh god,” Buffy said, as panic set in. What
if she didn’t like her? What if she didn’t want them to be together? What was she
going to do?
“Breathe, honey,” Joyce said, putting an arm around her
daughter. “She’s going to love you. Now, just say hello,” she took Buffy’s hand
that held the phone to press it against her ear.
“Hello,” Buffy squeaked out.
“Buffy, hello, dear,” his mother said with such friendliness
that it made Buffy’s knees give out. She collapsed on the small pedestal that
she’d been standing on. “I know this is a bit of an unorthodox way to meet you,
but I’m Constance Giles. Please call me Connie or if you’d like, Mom.”
“Giles?” Buffy asked, unable to get past the difference in
Spike’s and his mother’s last name.
“Yes, didn’t my William tell you that I remarried a few
years ago to a dear, dear man? He was the librarian at the last preparatory
school that William attended. I met him there and it was love at first sight,
but I’m afraid that Will didn’t take too kindly to sharing me and decided to
take off to California for
college.”
“I had no idea,” Buffy said, slightly ashamed at her lack of
knowledge about her new family. “I’m sorry, it’s just that…”
“My dear boy doesn’t open up easily,” Constance
said, with a laugh. “Just don’t give up and he’ll come around. Now, I hear the
two of you are marrying in a few moments?”
“Yes,” Buffy said, playing with her dress. She looked up at
everyone waiting for her to finish. “I love him very much.”
“Of that I have no doubt. You would have to love him to get
past his tough boy exterior, but I think you have found the sweet soul beneath
that surface.”
“I have,” Buffy said, letting a few tears slide down her
cheeks. “He treats me so good.”
“Good, otherwise I’d kick his ass,” Constance
said, surprising Buffy with her language. In the stunned silent aftermath of
her statement, she laughed and continued, “I’m not that old, dear.”
“Of course not,” Buffy said. “I wish you were here.”
“Thank you. I have an idea of how I can be though.”
“What’s that?”
“I’ll put my husband on the other line,” Constance
said with a conspiratorial whisper. “Then put the cell phone on speaker so we
can listen in.”
Buffy giggled feeling completely at ease with her soon-to-be
mother-in-law. “Yes, I’ll have them do that. I really hate to cut this short
but I need to finish getting ready.”
“Certainly,” Constance said. “Pass me
back to my rascal of a son or his friend, Lindsey.”
“Thank you, Constance,” Buffy said, standing again. “I
appreciate you talking to me and accepting this. Spike said something about
visiting you this summer and I just want you to know that I’d love to.”
“Thank you. We’ll be looking forward to meeting you.”
Whatever fears Buffy had disappeared with the phone call. It
chased away the last of the gray clouds of doom that had hung over her
previously. Their families were accepting this union and with that kind of
support they couldn’t go wrong.
Dawn took the phone back outside to the men then returned
with Hank behind her.
“You are so beautiful, baby,” Hank said, getting misty eyed
as he took in his eldest daughter.
“Thank you, Daddy,” Buffy said, taking his hand and accepting
the kiss he placed on her cheek. She looked around her at Dawn, Cordelia,
Harmony, Mrs. McDonald and her mother and knew she was the luckiest of people.
“Thank you all for being here and for helping us out. I love you.”
“We love you, too,” Harmony said, rushing over to hug her.
“You and Blondie Bear are perfect for one another. Why wouldn’t we help?”
Dawn rolled her eyes but joined in the group hug that was
fast forming, but it was Cordelia that broke them up quickly. She waved her
makeup bag in the air.
“Repair time,” Cordy said, with a smile. “Everybody line
up.”
Everyone’s face was repaired in record time. The music
started to play, signaling their need to start the walk down the aisle. Harmony
went first, followed by Dawn, and then Cordelia as Maid of Honor was the last
to join Spike and his best men, Lindsey and Angel at the altar. The bride’s
march started and Buffy put her hand on her father’s arm for the walk down the
aisle. She was surprised to find there was no nervousness left in her once she
met the eyes of the man she loved.
No one else existed as she went to him. This was the joining
of their hearts, soul and bodies and she poured her emotions into the words of
her vows. It was Spike that sobbed through his promises to her. He was shaking
so bad that Buffy feared he was going to faint at her feet. She moved closer to
him so that he would use her for support. He did, just the way it should be.
His kiss was her undoing though because she could feel his love conveyed with
the touch of his lips. She was his. She was loved by him and he was loved in
return. The way it should be.
~~~~~~~~
The sun shone brightly overhead, but it was ignored by the
two young men that were racing through the parking lot. A traffic accident on
the highway had made them late. Both were worried about being late, but the
grins they tossed at each other showed that neither was really concerned. This
was a day of freedom not only for them but for the women they loved.
It was graduation day at Sunnydale
High School.
They stopped at the back of the crowd, scanning it for signs
of family. Dawn frantically waved her arm to show them where they were. With a
lot of ‘excuse me’s’, Spike and Lindsey climbed over people to reach the two
seats reserved for them.
“Harmony Kendall,” the announcer said
letting them know they had arrived just in time.
The girl Lindsey had decided was the right one for him after
all made her way across the stage. Harmony looked down at them and gave a small
wave to Lindsey before accepting her diploma. The couple had decided that
Lindsey would spend the summer at home then in the fall, Harmony would
accompany him to UCLA. It was a decision that they and their families were
happy with.
Spike settled back in his chair for the wait until Buffy
would be called. The few weeks since their marriage had been hectic ones. He
came to Sunnydale on the weekends to be with her. The Summers had offered
Joyce’s old studio for them to use while he was in town. It gave them a measure
of privacy to start settling in as a couple. A lot of time was spent talking,
making plans, and making love. They were going to spend the summer with his
mother and her husband in New York.
While there they were going to look into local schools and studios then make a
decision on where they would continue their education.
Buffy had decided that she wanted to dance and if it wasn’t
as a Dallas Cowboys’ cheerleader it would be okay, but Spike still wanted her
to have that chance if she wanted it. After a lot of conversations with the men
around him, including Hank who was seeking counseling with Joyce to put their
marriage back together, Spike realized that he wanted to work with disadvantaged
youths. He would be switching his major to psychology and only hoped he could
make it through.
The roster wasn’t as long as Spike thought it would be and
it wasn’t long before they were calling Buffy’s name. He stood and cheered for
his wife, but found himself choking on laughter instead. Underneath her
graduation gown she was wearing bright pink cowboy boots. That was his girl,
the one he met by accident, tried to take advantage of but fell in love with
instead. She met his eyes as she walked across the stage and flashed him a
‘come and get me’ grin.
Oh, he knew what he was feeling was real but what the hell
had he been thinking? Then he decided that maybe thinking was a bit overrated
as Buffy propelled herself out of the crowd and into his arms. He kissed her
with every emotion his heart felt for her, before scooping her up to take her
to his car.
“I’ve got something planned for tonight for us,” Spike said.
“Don’t worry. Everyone else knows and they’re all for it.”
“Ooh, what?” Buffy asked, peeling off her gown and throwing
it in the backseat. She settled in the middle beside him with a pair of jean
shorts that barely covered her ass and a white tank top that made a very needy
part of him come alive.
“Like a long delayed wedding night,” Spike said. “Your mom
put an overnight bag for you in the trunk, so you’ve got whatever you’ll need.”
“I love you,” Buffy whispered, before kissing his cheek.
“You make me feel so special.”
“That’s because you are,” he said, turning to start the car.
And like a bullet they were gone again.
