Chapter 23
It was done.
All the paperwork to file an official complaint against
Drusilla and Warren was signed. Andrew, Lindsey, and Spike had accompanied
Buffy to the Dean’s office to file their account of what happened concerning
the manipulated photos. There was even a stack of the original photos of Buffy
that were used to add to the evidence file. They had been promised that the
disciplinary committee would act quickly to settle the matter.
Spike was relieved that this phase of his life was coming to
a close. Although he knew there were things that needed to be finished first. He
expected at some point there would some kind of fallout from Buffy filing the
complaint against Drusilla and Warren. People who lived their lives by
treachery couldn’t just let their schemes be thwarted. He just hadn’t expected
it to happen so soon.
His ex-girlfriend was heading into the Administration office
as they were heading out. She stopped short when she saw them then narrowed in
on Buffy walking beside him. Before they had a chance to react, Drusilla was
standing in front of the petite blonde who had drawn herself up to her full
height. The two girls faced off with sparks of animosity flying between them.
“You really think that a little hick like you can keep him satisfied?”
Drusilla hissed. “You’ll be an embarrassment to him if he tries to take you
anywhere other than the local BBQ shack.”
Buffy tossed her hair over her shoulder. “One, I do know how
to use a fork and a spoon and even a knife, too.” She smiled cockily. “And two
on the satisfaction thing I do all right,” she said looking over at Spike.
“Honey, was it four or five times that you came last night? I can’t remember
with all the orgasms I was having myself.”
The three men laughed at Buffy’s defense. Spike loved it.
And it made him love her even more. She was his spitfire and all he could do
was have her back. He stepped closer to her, not knowing quite how Dru would
react.
“You’re nothing more than a novelty to him,” Drusilla said.
“A little blonde toy with promises of future slutdom that he’ll tire of soon
enough. Then he’ll come back to me. He always does.”
“Oh, he’ll tire of my future slutdom rather than your
current one?” Buffy replied crossing her arms with one hip jutted out. “He told
me why he left you. You couldn’t keep your legs closed. He, unlike some people,
prefers monogamy. I’ll give him that.”
“You bitch,” Drusilla screamed, raising her hand to slap
Buffy, but she was too fast for the out of control woman. Buffy grabbed Dru by
the wrist, twisting until she was standing behind the brunette who was now
kneeling on the ground.
“I’m going to give you some advice,” Buffy said, holding
tight. “The complaints filed against you this morning will have you kicked out
of school. What you just did could have you thrown in jail. I have enough
witnesses that will back me up. I’ll drop it if you stand up and walk away.
Don’t ever bother us again.”
Drusilla looked around as Spike did. Funny he hadn’t noticed
before that they had attracted a small crowd that was watching the events
unfold. Everyone seemed to be holding their breath waiting for what would
happen next.
“All right,” Drusilla choked out. “Let me go.”
Buffy cautiously released the brunette but seemed poised to
defend herself if necessary. Drusilla stood, straightened her clothes, then
without saying another word, walked off. Spike breathed a sigh of relief even
as he shook his head in amazement at his girlfriend. She was wonderful, and the
twenty or so people that had been watching thought so too. They broke out in
impromptu applause at Buffy’s actions.
Buffy smiled and bowed in sweeping playful motions in
response. There were a few catcalls of appreciation before the crowd began to
disperse. Spike couldn’t help himself. He picked Buffy up, twirling her around
as he laughed.
“You’re something else, you know that?” Spike asked, setting
her on her feet but still keeping her in his arms. “Bloody hell, that was
perfect.”
“See, if you had only told me what was going on sooner,”
Buffy said, with a sniff but she was grinning broadly. “I could have handled
it.”
“Super Buffy,” Lindsey said, coming over to hug her. “I
never thought those self defense classes in high school would actually come in
handy.”
“If you’d been paying attention,” Buffy replied, ruffling
her friend’s hair. “Instead of trying to cop feels off the girls you might have
learned something, too.”
Feelings of elation were running high between the friends.
Together they had beaten a common foe. It was time to celebrate. Spike knew
only one thing he wanted to do. Make this woman his permanently. Throwing his
arms around Buffy and Lindsey then motioned Andrew over to join them.
“I’ve got an idea,” Spike said. “Humor me, okay?”
Lindsey rolled his eyes and Buffy giggled but they both nodded.
“Lindsey, would you be my best man?”
“Huh? What?” was his reply to which Spike laughed.
“I asked Buffy to marry me last night and she took pity on
me and said yes,” Spike explained. “And bear with me here but I just got a
really wild idea.”
“Which is?” Buffy asked, with caution. She tried to step
away but Spike pulled her back.
“Let’s go to Vegas and get married before we take you back
to the ranch,” Spike said. “We’ll call Cordy, Angel and Harmony to join us. We
can spend the night there, have a very short honeymoon, and then we can all
head back for home tomorrow.”
“You’re crazy,” Buffy said, shaking her head. “You want to
elope? Today? Then we won’t see each other until the end of school? No.”
It was crazy and maybe a little insane, but everything
inside Spike said it was the perfect solution. The right solution. It would
solidify all the tentative plans they made the night before. Already being
married would solve the issues of living together, of pooling their money, and
building a life, because they would be in it together. He just needed to
convince her.
Taking her hands in his, Spike dropped to his knees in front
of her. “Buffy Anne Summers, I love you, fully and completely. I’m already
committed to you for the rest of my life. Marry me today. Let me be able to
show you and the world how serious I am with my words. I promise to take care
of you, let you take care of me, and be with you as a friend and lover for the
rest of our lives. Please?”
No one said a word, not even Buffy. His heart sank as she
stood and stared at him. No tears, no quiver, nothing but a serious expression
on her face. He hung his head at the thought he’d failed to win this girl’s
heart completely. It was an impulsive thought for one who planned her life so
carefully. He tried to tell himself that a no for now didn’t mean a no forever.
She told him yes the night before. He would cling to that.
“Spike,” Buffy said, cupping his cheek.
He opened his eyes to see her kneeling with him. She leaned
over to kiss him softly. It was the kiss of good-bye. He knew it.
“Don’t look so sad,” Buffy whispered, laying her cheek
against his. “I’m saying yes. The hell with the carefully laid out plans. I
want to be with you and I know you’ll support my dreams. Let’s go get hitched.”
All he could do was pull her closer, wrapping his arms
around her in a tight hug while he thanked the heavens above for giving her to
him.

“There it is on the right,” Lindsey said, from the back seat
of the Desoto.
Immediately upon his statement, Andrew was leaning out the
car window snapping pictures for the memory album he was giving the happy
couple. Spike shook his head as their new friend leaned on his shoulder to get
a better shot as he pulled into the driveway. Somewhere between confessing the
truth and signing the complaint Andrew had become a part of their group. He was
easy going, eager to please, and kept them amused, personality trait that
seemed to be missing from the otherwise intense bunch.
They had already attained their marriage license from the
bureau which was just around the corner from the chapel they’d chosen. Buffy
had giggled as she filled out the paperwork, unable to accept the reality of
what she was doing. It was only when it was handed back to them, stamped and
ready for the final signings that she had sobered up. Spike quickly hugged her
then swept her off her feet which only prompted some more giggling from her.
Spike parked the car in the small parking lot in front of
the building. He and Buffy looked through the windshield at the brightly lit
outside which was covered in thousands of what looked like strands of Christmas
lights.
“Nice,” Lindsey said. “I mean for a girl from the back of
beyond to be getting all hitched up in the city like this.”
“Shut up, Linds,” Buffy growled, turning around to swat at
him.
Lindsey playfully ducked her hand by sliding down onto the
floorboard. They were all still in high spirits which had only grown as the day
wore on. Still laughing they piled out of the car where Andrew promptly started
posing the others for photos. There were photos taken by the car, by the front
door and under the sign of the chapel.
“Don’t you think we should go in?” Spike asked a few minutes
later. He was already tired of smiling until he felt his face would crack.
“Tell them we’re here or something.”
“Sounds like a good idea,” Buffy said, grabbing his hand and
flashing a smile of conspiracy his way.
“Don’t leave me behind,” Lindsey said, running ahead to open
the door. “I am the best man and all.”
“Okay, okay,” Andrew whined. “If you find you don’t have
enough photos of the blessed event don’t blame me.”
“No problem, squirt,” Spike said. “No blaming you if the
first thousand pictures aren’t enough.”
“We really do appreciate it,” Buffy said, hugging Andrew.
“Spike is just all grouchy. He doesn’t realize how hot he is going to be on
film.”
“True, very true,” Andrew said. “I mean he is all manly with
sculpted cheekbones and everything.”
Spike was relieved when someone came to assist them. The
clerk kept them busy for the next few minutes filling out paperwork and picking
out which package they wanted. The details didn’t really interest Spike but he
knew they meant a great deal to Buffy. Her face flashed from intense as she
made a decision back to wistfulness as she longed for things she couldn’t have.
He would have suspected she was having second thoughts if her hand wasn’t
firmly wrapped around his and giving it a squeeze every once in awhile.
The door behind them burst open making everyone in the room
turn to see who it was. It was Dawn. The teen glanced from one person to the
other then zeroed in on her sister. She rushed over with an accusing look.
“Really, I can’t believe you were going to get married and
not even have me here,” Dawn exclaimed.
“How did you get here?” Buffy asked.
“How do you think?” Dawn replied, glancing over her
shoulder. “Mom and Dad who are pretty ticked off themselves because they had to
be told by Lindsey’s parents who were told by Cordelia. Everyone is pissed off
because of this.”
“Oh balls,” Spike muttered. “It’s going to turn into a
bloody circus.”
“I think you can say that again,” Lindsey said, opening the
front door as the rest of the parents came toward it. Following them were the
three they had invited to the wedding, Angel, Cordelia and Harmony. Cordy was
the last one in and as she came through the door, Lindsey hissed at her,
“Tattletale.”
“Shut up, shorty,” Cordelia retorted, thrusting an overnight
bag toward her brother while maintaining a grip on the garment bags in her
other hand. “Hold this. Spike obviously hasn’t known you long enough to know
that any scheme you’re involved in will backfire.”
“I think I’m figuring that out,” Spike mumbled as he stood
beside Buffy facing the two sets of parents standing as judge and jury before
them. On cue, all four started speaking at once. It was hard to make out exact
words but they all seemed to be in the same theme of that they were crazy for
doing this. He looked down at Buffy seeing the panic in her eyes and decided enough
was enough. Putting his arm around her shoulders and pulling her close, he
decided it was time to be a man and put a few adults in their place.
