Author’s Note: This is the first and only turn in this story I wrote where I knew what was going to happen in the next turn because rkimmelerre had gotten his selections back to me before I finished writing this.

Turn 9: Game

“Was not expecting it to be Dawn’s perspective,” Xander mumbled to himself.

It took him a few seconds to process the memories. It wasn’t like it was just what happened with Dawn, he had his own memories as well in there. He remembered them going out and wiping out every vampire they could find over several nights and Dawn had no memory of that, but on other things he had known what she was thinking and feeling.

He did his best not to think about Dawn for a moment as he looked around. He was in the normal library, or at least what he had started to think of as normal. Willow, Tara, and Buffy were all present. Willow and Tara were practicing floating pencils while Buffy was reading a book

He thought back to the card his opponent had played: no stuns on turn 10. That meant he had to start getting things ready now.

He first took a moment to survey the board. Buffy’s stress was high again, at 111. Veruca had become ‘Veruca the Werewolf’ and would be doing 7 damage to the town a turn. Given Sunnydale had 62 health and things would probably be decided next turn, he could live with that.

Despite starting a relationship on Turn 8, it looked like Dawn was going to drop to a rival. With the pressing threat of the Judge he really didn’t think he could do much about it.

On top of that danger was the vampires. After wiping them out last turn their numbers had regenerated to 8, but with the enhancement card they had received they were set to do 32 damage. Between them and Veruca the town was in a lot of danger even without the Judge. Killing them would also give some valuable experience.

As he looked through the stats, he noticed three things. He was well behind everyone else, which was normal, but that meant it would be a lot cheaper to improve himself than the others. Secondly, he still had 136 stat points saved up, so he could make some substantial improvements. Finally, was something he saw in Buffy’s desires:
Combat: Attracted to those who are able to defend themselves.
Dark Attraction: While this character may not be evil, they have an attraction to those who walk on the darker side.
Nice: Wants a compassionate partner.
Strong: Attracted to those with physical strength.
Desires that you have: 1

He had been approaching her based on his niceness trait that she liked, but if he improved his body and combat, he could be more appealing to her.

Xander made a decision: improving himself would be the focus of the turn. All of them would need to be combat ready to face the Judge. If a side effect of that was that Buffy finally saw him as more than a friend, well, he was pretty sure he could live with that.

He started by setting the character training settings. He made it so he would train, while Buffy, Willow, and Tara would act as friends. He then looked at the costs:

9 - Light Training: Gain 25 stat points and -3 stress.
20 - Regular Training: Gain 45 stat points and 18 stress.
35 - Hard Training: Gain 60 stat points and 41 stress.
70 - Musical Montage Training: Gain 70 stat points and 75.2 stress.

He decided to just go ahead and take Hard Training, but it would take at least two sessions to get where he wanted to go. He looked through the characters and saw that Tara was only four stat points away from increasing magic, so he set her to train with him for the second session.

35 - Regular Training: Gain 45 stat points and 24 stress.
70 - Hard Training: Gain 60 stat points and 45.5 stress.
180 - Musical Montage Training: Gain 70 stat points and 77.6 stress.

He took light training this time and then moved onto buying stats. He started with himself:

He first raised his athletics score for 30, then again for 40, then a third time for 50. He bought one level of combat for 88, His remaining 13 points weren’t of much use so he bought a level of Social, though he wasn’t sure what good it would do.

It was quite a jump in his abilities. He moved onto his friends next, though he knew they wouldn’t be as extensive.

For Buffy he bought her level of the Martial Arts skill for 5 experience: Martial Arts: Learn to use your fists in battle. Physical power increased by 50% of the athletics stat. She had 10.5 experience, most gained from their purge of vampires last turn, so using 5 meant she’d soon be able to get another level of something.

Willow was a tough call. She had 65 experience, and it cost 64 to raise her magic. However, she had 4 experience, and the next level of ‘Battle Mage’ took 7. He instead spent her experience to increase her combat skill to 1 and get an experience point out of it.

Tara was last and the most detailed after himself. She had 7 experience, just enough to pick up the next level of battle mage. He then looked at her stats:

Getting the first level of magic for 70 was a no brainer. He then decided to improve her athletics for 20. He was in the same position with her remaining points like he had been with himself, so he picked up a level of social.

With that out of the way, it was on to the vampires.

Turn Regen: At the end of each turn this enemy regenerates equal to the turn number.

6: Research an enemy Weakness - Your party will research the enemy looking for weaknesses.

Destroy the monster:
Single Enemy: Find and kill a single vampire, then call it a night. Will reduce their damage this turn by 15%.
Sweep: Take a quick sweep through the graveyard. Will eliminate 2 and reduce their damage this turn by 25%.
Patrol: Go through the dedicated routine of checking Sunnydale for vampires. Will eliminate 4, reduce their damage this turn by 50%.
Hunt: Have an intense effort to track down and eliminate vampires. Will eliminate 6, reduce their damage this turn by 80%.

They were too powerful to just take out in one action, so he had to split it into two. They first went out on a patrol to kill 4, then a hunt to take down 3, both times requiring zero points to complete. It was enough to reduce the damage for the turn from 32 to 0. In both battles he put himself, Buffy, and Willow on the front lines with Tara in support. Tara was stronger than Willow, but it was his redhead friend that now needed the experience gained from being in battle.

He then used the experience they had gained: Buffy got another level of Martial Arts, while he picked up the next level of Warrior: Warrior: Improve physical attack power by learning to use weapons in battle. Power is increased by 2 + 20% of the athletics stat. Willow was an incredibly small 0.25 experience away from the next level of Battle Mage, but he didn’t have enough actions left to get her that tiny amount.

He also took the opportunity to use Tara’s ‘Good Company’ ability: Good Company - Tara is a pleasant person to be around. Using this will lower stress by five for all friends and party members. It wasn’t a major change, but he could use the help on the stress.

His next decision was easy: take care of the Judge. With their improved magical skills it cost only 15 points to stun him for another turn.

It was finally time to make a decision on his relationships. He went to Buffy, she was out of actions so he first had to restore her for 60 points, then looked at her sheet:

15 Mojo: Heavy Flirting: You have a more intense, flirtatious meeting. This increases your relationship by 28, gains 20 points, improves standing by 0 and reduces Buffy's stress by 20.
23 Mojo: Go on a Date: Take the character out on a date. This increases your relationship by 56, gains 25 points, improves standing by 5, and reduces Buffy's stress by 28.
89 Mojo: Lovers: Start a more intense relationship with heavier sexual actions, get 20 points per turn, and 20 points right now.
268 Mojo: Committed: Go to a committed relationship with all sexual actions open, get 50 points per turn, and 100 points right now.

Her desire for him had increased quite a bit. He took the date option for a substantial increase in their relationship, to reduce her stress, and some extra points. He didn’t want to waste more points though by restoring her, so he considered what else he could do.

He had a feeling he was going to need as many points as possible for the last turn. He took a Gain Mojo action for 46 more Mojo, then used 25 of them to ‘Fool Around’ with Willow. It got him 60 points, reduced her stress, and bumped her standing back up to Best Friend.

He waited on the End Turn button as he thought over what he had done. He was being risky trying to improve himself and his relationships instead of just going after the Judge right away. As he looked at Willow, Buffy, and Tara talking though he knew trying to get them all together was worth a little risk.

Okay, a little risk was the safety of the world, but what was that in comparison to love?

He clicked the button and his opponent's action appeared:

Enhancement: One monster’s combat strength is increased by 75%.

Opponent plays it on the Judge.

Xander could only grimly nod his head. His opponent had not done much, but had used his points to combine two great cards. Not only was the Judge unstunnable, but an already powerful monster had become substantially stronger. It would make his last turn much more difficult.
