CHAPTER 21
BACK HOME
“Bye, Faith... I'll see you soon.”-Buffy said to her brunette counterpart, who was still in a deep coma, and kissed her forehead. It was time for her to go home, her mom was waiting patiently while she was saying bye to Faith, but she really just wanted to stay with Faith.
“She’s gonna be ok, honey. Faith’s a tough girl.”-Joyce said and squeezed Buffy’s hand gently. Her heart broke when Buffy looked at her, her green eyes sparkling with tears, and said:
“What if she… what if she dies and I’m not here with her? I don’t want her to die alone… Mom, I just want her to wake up… She saved my life; it drives me crazy I can’t help her now that she needs me.”
“You said you didn’t remember…”-Joyce looked a bit confused and even more worried if that was even possible.
Buffy wanted to slap herself for letting it slip, but she really wanted her mom and everyone else to know that Faith saved her; she didn’t want them to think of her as the girl who almost got her killed, because Faith wasn’t that girl anymore.
“Buffy, honey… she’s not gonna die. And, I don’t think she would want you to spend all your time here. You have me and your friends, and we’re all gonna help you through this hard time.
Hard time… that was like the understatement of the century, Buffy thought. Joyce had nooo idea what she’d been through and she wanted to keep it that way, so she just nodded and headed out of the hospital.
It was 11:30 am when Buffy got home. She just wanted to take a shower and go to bed, but she knew it wouldn’t happen as soon as she entered the house.
“SURPRISE!”-the Gang yelled and Buffy gave them a weak smile when she saw a cake on the table and balloons all over the place.
“It’s not my birthday, is it?”-Buffy asked, genuinely curious because she had no idea how much time had actually passed.
“No, but you are back, so we thought it needed to be celebrated.”-Willow smiled and hugged her best friend, so grateful and happy to have her back.
“Thanks, guys…”-Buffy said and hugged them all, but then she had to add: “I don’t wanna sound ungrateful, but I don’t feel like celebrating while Faith’s in a coma. She saved me.”
Everyone was surprised to hear that, and a very uncomfortable silence filled the room.
“But… it doesn’t mean that we don’t get to eat cake, does it? Cause, it looks really, really yummy.”-Anya asked, and Buffy just had to smile.
“We’ll have some cake. I could use coffee too. I thought Angel would be here.”-Buffy looked around, unsure if she was disappointed or relieved.
“He’s sleeping in the basement. He hadn’t slept for days and we didn’t wanna wake him up.”-Tara answered, and suddenly wished she could talk to Buffy alone, because her friend’s aura got so much darker during her ‘vacation in Hell’.
“Oh. Ok.”-Buffy said shortly and sat at the table to drink coffee and have a slice of cake. She was uncharacteristically quiet and nobody knew how to act around her. She was practically oozing with tension, every sound made her jump.
She tried so hard to talk normally to her friends, but she just wasn’t feeling it. She couldn’t stop thinking about Faith and everything they’d been through. Her head was constantly flooded with faces of all the demons that had hurt her, above all Angelus and Darla, and she wondered if those images and all that pain would ever leave her thoughts.
“Guys… thanks for all this, but I’m really exhausted, I’ll just shower and go to bed. I’ll see you later, ok?”-Buffy said and felt bad when she saw how worried about her they all were.
As soon as she started walking up the stairs, Joyce said: “I’m so worried about her. I have a feeling she remembers everything, but just doesn’t want to share it with us. I wish she could open up to me and let me help her somehow.”
“I know, Joyce, but I think she needs some time. She knows we’re all here for her.”-Giles said and gently placed his hand on Joyce’s shoulder. They got really close while Buffy had been gone.
Buffy stripped and stared at her own reflection… feeling like a stranger was staring back at her. All of her body was bruised and full of scars, she thought it seemed like she aged ten years in a short while. There were dark circles around her eyes, she was thinner than before and her face looked so sad, she wondered if it forgot how to smile.
She almost flinched when she saw just sadness and pain in her own eyes, and she wondered if everyone else could see it.
As soon as she stepped in the shower, she felt a bit better. It was massaging her sore body and really helping her relax. She just leaned against the tiles and let hot water run down her body, and she would have probably spent the rest of the day in there if she hadn’t run out of hot water. It forced her to get out, and she changed into a pink T-shirt and white shorts, ready to go sleep.
Her heart almost jumped out when she saw Angel sitting on her bed. It took her a moment to remember that he really was Angel, not Angelus.
Angel heard her gasp in surprise…and fear, and his heart broke a little. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. Just wanted to talk to you in private for a moment, wanted to make sure you were really ok. Willow closed the shades so I don’t burst into flames.”-he added because it was dark in Buffy’s room.
“I… I’m a bit too tired to talk about it all now… but, thank you for everything you’ve done to get me out of there.”-Buffy said and wished she could just curl up in his arms and forget about everything else. She didn’t bother turning on the lights because she really just wanted to sleep.
“I’m glad I could help. My whole world crumbled when Cordy’s vision warned me about you. I was willing to go search through every single dimension if I had to. I know a little something about hell dimensions and trust me when I say I’ll be able to understand you better than anyone else.”-Angel said and walked towards Buffy, but he didn’t get too close because he could see she was still freaked out.
A tear ran down Buffy’s face when she remembered how she’d sent him to hell. Now that she understood just what exactly she had done, her heart hurt even worse.
“I sent you to hell and you brought me back.”-she said and finally got closer to him, looking up into those dark eyes that watched her with so much love.
“I deserved it… but you didn’t.”-Angel whispered and gently pulled her into his arms. His arms around her body felt so good, Buffy was a little surprised because she actually relaxed and felt safer.
“Angel…don’t leave me. Don’t go to L.A. just yet.”-Buffy whispered and another tear ran down her face.
“I’ll stay as long as you need me… I promise.”-Angel kissed the top of her head and Buffy caught his hand and led him to her bed.
“I know you’re tired too, so… sleep with me. Just hold me, please.”
“Your wish is my command.”-Angel smiled and lay down on the bed. He couldn’t remember the last time he felt as peaceful as when Buffy placed her head on his chest, caught his hand and closed her eyes.
He pulled a blanket over her and whispered: “Sleep tight, my love.”
“You too.”-Buffy mumbled and a few minutes later she was in the land of dreams…well, nightmares.
Angel held her tightly and petted her hair when he heard her sob quietly. Her little hands clutched his shirt and pulled it hard. He thought his heart would have jumped out if it had been beating when he heard her sob:
“Angelus… no, please, stop it… you’re not Angel, you’re not…”
“Oh god…”-he whispered and gently shook her. It earned him a punch in the face, but he didn’t even flinch. Buffy opened her eyes that were filled with fear, all of her body shook.
“Buffy… it’s me, Angel… you’re safe, you’re home… You’re safe, Buffy…”-he kept repeating and gently running his hands over her body to make her stop shivering.
“Angel… I’m… I’m sorry, I can’t…”-Buffy said, her voice all shaky and she jumped off the bed and ran downstairs like a hurricane.
Angel was so worried about her, and so angry because his evil version caused her even more pain in that dimension. Even though he knew it wasn’t him, and it wasn’t his fault, he felt guilty and had no idea how to make it up to her.
“Buffy? Are you ok?”-Tara asked her when she got to the kitchen to get a glass of water. Her hands were so shaky she spilt most of it when she heard Tara’s voice.
“I… yeah, I just… bad dream.”-Buffy answered and quickly drank her water, her mouth was so dry. “Where is everyone?”
“Your mom had to go to the gallery, and everyone else is in the Magic Box. I stayed here in case you need anything.”
“Thank you, Tara. You’re sweet. I just… I thought Faith might visit me in my dreams like she had done before… but, nothing. What does that mean? She’s not the lost cause, is she?”
“Don’t think like that… I’m sure Faith’s gonna be fine. You two are strong.”-Tara said, even though she thought that Buffy looked anything but strong at that moment.
“Could you… could you cast a spell and wake her up?”-Buffy asked, suddenly looking hopeful and Tara hated to smash her hopes, but she had to be honest…
“I’m sorry, Buffy… That’s something she has to do on her own. But, if you need anything else, I’m here.”-Tara said and caught her shaky hand.
Buffy just nodded, and let Tara hold her hand; it made her feel a little better. She couldn’t explain the feeling, but it kinda felt like Tara’s positive energy filled her being.
They just sat there in silence, holding hands, in a very comfortable silence.
“Tara… I wanna tell you everything. But, promise me you won’t tell anyone. Especially not to my mom.”-Buffy whispered, looking deep into Tara’s blue eyes.
“Of course, Buffy… I won’t tell anyone. Not even Willow.”-Tara promised and tried her best to keep a straight face when Buffy started telling her the worst story she ever heard.
She just listened, without interrupting, but her heart was breaking for the blonde Slayer. She put her arms around Buffy, who got closer to her, almost whispering in her ear.
When she was done with her story, Buffy was a sobbing mess, and Tara just held her and whispered: “Oh, Buffy… I’m so sorry… but, you’re safe now, I promise. I’ll cast a protection spell on the house if it’ll make you feel better… Sssh, sweetie…”
Buffy felt like a bit of the weight on her chest was lifted, and she just had no idea how to thank Tara for it. She felt so close to the shy, blonde witch, and she realized that their friendship just turned into a real friendship, not just ‘you’re dating my best friend’ friendship.
“Tara… thank you.”-Buffy whispered and gently kissed Tara’s lips. There was nothing sexual about it, it was just about closeness, she kinda got used to it with Faith. She wasn’t sure about what she felt about Faith, but she just really needed her to wake up, so she’d figure her feelings out.
Tara was surprised when Buffy kissed her, she stuttered: “B-Buffy, y-you’re welcome. No kissing, t-though.”
“Oh, right… I’m sorry. I just… it was a thank you, words weren’t enough. Won’t happen again.”
“It’s ok… I’m g-glad I m-managed to make you feel a bit better.”
Angel overheard all of Buffy’s story, despite her quiet voice, and his heart broke. He took his cell phone out of his pocket and made a phone call.
“Lorne, I need your help. “
