Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: My beta Bubbysbub is a superhereo
Feedback: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I’ll get on my knees and beg for feedback both good and bad

Distribution: Ask and you will receive
Warnings: The normal language warning and mention of threesome sex as well as violence
Reviews: Ri - Thankyou so much I'm glad your enjoying I hope this chapter lives up to your expectations
LadyVirgo1956 - Check your inbox for an email re your review.
Daeomae - Glad you like the action as I feel writing action is one of my weak points, Lindsey is in quite a bit of trouble and I don't think Angel would of cared if Xander's bullets had killed Lindsey, well he would care about Xander's reaction. Anyway, thanks as always for the wonderful review and I hope this feeds the addiction :-)
A/N: A big thanks to Jenn for allowing me to use some of her ideas evident in Playing Games. Buffyworld is back! A big thanks to Howard Russell for bringing such a wonderful resource back online.

Chapter Twenty-One
Angel felt as if he’d been punched repeatedly in the chest. He could not breath, not that he needed to breath, but it would be nice to at least feel his dead lungs expand and contract. Angel was sure that he must of heard Spike wrong but before he could demand answers someone else bet him to it.
“What?!” Willow finally demanded the question most people were thinking. “Are you sure? How? Why? I mean…” Tara gently squeezed Willow’s hand, conveying the message that Willow was on the cusp of a gigantic babble. The ploy worked and Willow stopped mid sentence, breathing deeply.
“I’m sure, my nose doesn’t lie.” Spike handed Angel Lindsey’s jacket that he had forgotten he still had in his hand until that minute. Angel took the jacket in limp fingers before sniffing it thoroughly. He could smell Lindsey’s scent as well as Lilah’s and many other drones at Wolfram and Hart but on their as well was a scent that was distinctly his Sire’s. The Bitch was back.
“It’s her.” Angel told them in defeat.
“I don’t understand, if she’s been back all this time why haven’t we heard anything before now? Wouldn’t she want revenge on Angel? Not to mention the large trail of bodies that we haven’t seen at all.” Cordelia was puzzled, it didn’t seem to make sense.
“She’s human.” Spike croaked out and then cleared his throat, “Lindsey said she’s human and she’s dying. That’s why they tried to grab me and Xan. Well it wouldn’t have mattered if it was you or me but they were going to use Xander as leverage so that we would turn Darla.” Angel’s eyes widened and he held Spike to him grateful that Wolfram and Harts plan had not worked.
“Well why don’t they just have any vampire turn her?”
“No, its got to be someone from the Aurielius clan, someone who has seen at least a century and thanks to B… well, there’s not that many of us left these days.” Angel explained to his team, still attempting to come to terms with the news. His Sire was alive and kicking, she had once been his world but Angel had never loved her, not like he loved the two beside him, or not how he had once loved Buffy. The woman who had shown Angel what love was. Angel would rid the world of Darla if she threatened the life of a loved one, just like he had in Sunnydale.
“Darla was a four hundred year old vampire, the Master of Aurielius’ favourite childe. Now she has lost all that power and strength being a mere mortal, worse than that as she’s a sickly, dieing mere mortal. She would want to regain as much of her former power as quickly as possible. Any old vampire is not going to cut it if she wants to wake up as a vampire with a smidgin of her old strength. Its also got to be someone from the Order of Aurielius due to the customs and rituals of each of the old clans, none of the others would accept her and her mindset is that of Aurielius, no one else.” Wesley tried to explain the complicated issues in a way that Cordelia and the others could understand. Before anyone could respond the elevator pinged and opened to reveal Joyce and Dawn. Spike was suddenly at her side as he urged her to put her weight on him as he led her to a recently vacated seat. Joyce fell onto it in relief, the trip downstairs had taken more out of her than she thought it would.
“Oh Spike, you’re bleeding, what happened?” Joyce exclaimed as she noticed Spike’s gaping chest wound.
“I was staked but what are you doing down here? You should be propped up in bed watching all the soaps on telly.”
“I just got so bored cooped up in that room and Dawn was hungry but didn’t want to leave me.” The others exchanged guilty glances because of all the drama they had forgotten all about food but no one wanted to leave the safety of the hotel.
“I vote for having food delivered,” Xander immediately replied, he didn’t want anyone to leave to get the food.
“There’s a good Chinese place down the road that delivers, how bout we go with them?” Gunn suggested suddenly feeling very hungry which should be a good sign that he was recovering from the gun shot wound.
“You up for Chinese niblet?” Spike asked Dawn before realising that Dawn wasn’t beside her mother anymore. “Bit?” Spike searched the foyer but could not see her and he could feel the first flutterings of fear in his stomach, if someone had taken Dawn their would be hell to pay. Spike shared a look with the others and they were all immediately up and looking for Dawn. Joyce watched them puzzled something was obviously going on but she did not have the first clue of what it was about. Just then Angel smelled blood and turned towards his office. The sight that greeted his eyes was horrifying even to Angel who had done many a horrifying thing. Dawn stood there knife in one hand and shallow cuts along her other arm. Willow turned and gasped in shock at the frightening and shocking sight.
“Is this blood?” Dawn asked dazed not taking in the people staring at you. Tara was the first to spring into action rushing across the room and taking the knife out of Dawn’s lifeless fingers. Xander grabbed the first aid supplies as Spike helped Joyce up and towards Dawn.
“Dawn!” Willow exclaimed still shocked that something like this could happen. Why would Dawn do this to herself?
“Oh, baby.” Joyce exclaimed kneeling down in front of Dawn so that she could see clearly into Dawn’s lowered face.
“What did you do?!” Spike demanded unable to understand how Dawn could do this to herself. Sure, she had lost her sister, but her mother was recovering and she had the rest of them who would do everything in their power to look after her.
“This is blood, isn't it? It can't be me. I'm not a key.” Xander stopped shocked, how did she find out? Xander supposed it was inevitable but he didn’t want her to find out like this. “I'm not a thing.” Angel quickly glanced into his office where his suspicions were confirmed, Giles’ diary was lying open on his desk.
“Oh, sweetie, no. Wha… what is this all about?” Joyce didn’t understand what her daughter was talking about so she just tried to reassure her youngest as best as she could.
“What am I?” Dawn demanded with tears in her eyes, “Am I real? Am I anything?” Dawn was confused and felt that her world had been torn out from underneath her, nothing was real anymore. Dawn felt that she had kept it together the last few days with everything that had happened to her mother and her sister but she couldn’t deal anymore. She couldn’t be strong and brave because she didn’t even know who she was anymore. She wasn’t anything, just somewhere to hide a key of all things. She wasn’t real. Dawn broke down and Joyce was there to hug her while everyone else was powerless to do anything but watch and be teary-eyed.
“I take it there is something you’ve been keeping from me?” Joyce asked looking up at Angel while rocking Dawn in her arms attempting to get all the support she needed.
“We were going to tell you when you were a bit better. With everything that has been going on we felt that it could wait til things weren’t quite as tumultuous for you.” Angel explained, but the explanation sounded lame in his own mind. They were talking about what was Joyce’s only daughter now, she deserved to know what was going on as soon as everyone else did. However Joyce didn’t berate him for not telling her sooner, instead she nodded her head before answering.
“Thanks Angel, I know you’re just looking out for my family and for that I’m grateful.” Joyce had a feeling a while back that Dawn might not be hers but she hadn’t had a chance to talk to anyone while she was going through her medical crisis and the relocation to LA, not to mention losing her wonderful Buffy. Dawn had fallen asleep still weeping in Joyce’s arms, she was emotionally exhausted from the revelation she had read in Giles’ diary. Dawn’s body demanded rest to let herself begin to heal from the emotional wounds created from reading that what she remembers of her life, of her father or a multitude of various other things never occurred. Spike bent down next to an obviously tiring Joyce who was still cradling a sleeping Dawn.
“Here why don’t I take her up to bed and watch over her while you talk to Angel.” Spike suggested, touching Joyce’s shoulder in reassurance. Joyce nodded in reply before actually answering.
“Could you Spike? That would be great, thanks.” Joyce gently extracted herself from Dawn’s sleeping grip. Dawn moved restlessly in her sleep but as soon as Spike’s arms were around her she settled back into a deep sleep somehow knowing she was safe. Spike lifted Dawn up but felt his fresh wound pull, he had not healed yet and carrying Dawn up all those stairs would likely aggravate his injuries. Luckily for Spike help came from an unlikely source.
“Here Spike, you’re still healing, I’ll carry her up if you like,” Faith offered, wanting to be a part of these people’s lives. During her time in jail she had realised that she had often been a little anti-social back in Sunnydale and she was determined to not repeat those mistakes. One way to do that would be to help those around her and Spike had already gained her respect in how he looked after Xander and Dawn in particular, but everyone else to a lesser extent.
Spike regarded Faith for a long moment. He did not like the facts of her involvement with Xander back in Sunnydale, she had definitely hurt the boy. Spike could also see that she was trying and he could admit to himself that he liked her style, it reminded him a bit of himself, her no nonsense, lets have fun attitude. Finally Spike nodded once and handed Dawn over to Faith.
“Thanks, I’ll show you the way.” Angel watched them go, smiling inwardly glad that Spike and Faith seemed to be getting along and weren’t trying to actively kill one another. He then turned to Joyce and offering her a hand, led her into his office.

Xander sat staring at his hands, hands that had shot a gun at a human, hit him, would’ve killed him. He would of killed a human for a vampire. Xander didn’t regret the decision, knew that for either of his lover’s safety he would do it again, but he wondered when he had stopped being Mr Black-and-White. Maybe it was round the time he started sleeping with a vampire, Xander reflected. Suddenly cool arms were around him pressing a little white box into his hands. Lips nibbled at his earlobe before a single word was whispered into his ear.
“Eat,” Angel urged, “you’re going to need your strength.” Hands suggestively ran over his thighs and Xander leaned back into Angel’s comforting embrace.
“You want to…? Now?” Xander asked confused, he had expected Angel to go into a deep brood about Darla being back and the Wolfram and Hart incident and the whole Glory is a god not to mention Dawn’s freak out and Xander just knew that they hadn’t heard the last of that.
“Yes, today, now eat and then we can go to bed. What’s wrong, you usually jump at the chance for sex, has it been too vanilla for you lately?” Angel purred into Xander’s ear so that no one else in the lobby could hear what they were talking about even though Angel was sure they had a fairly good idea. Angel opened the box of Chinese and forced a fork into Xander’s hand. Xander really did need to eat more lately.
“No, no of course not, I like everything we do and we’ve been too busy for a game, we’re lucky we’ve had any time for the three of us at all… that’s my point actually, with everything that’s happening don’t you want to research and go beat up contacts or something?” Angel chuckled feeding Xander a mouthful of noodles.
“Is that what I do, beat up contacts for information?” Angel asked rhetorically. “First of all, it’s daylight, so I can’t move around easily and secondly, most of my contacts will be tucked up in their beds til the sun goes down. But most importantly, it doesn’t matter what is happening around us I will always make time for you and Spike. I’ve been in this world long enough to know that if you don’t make time for your loved ones, even when you’re busy, your relationship will drift apart. Besides, I finally get to claim you, have our mark on you for all to see, you’re lucky that I haven’t claimed you right here in front of everyone.” Angel nibbled at Xander’s neck and smiled pleased when Xander arched it, offering to Angel.
“Well what are we waiting for, let’s go,” Xander was suddenly eager to feel his lovers around him, surrounding him, in him. He turned in Angel’s embrace so that he could look into Angel’s eyes when the arms around him did not let him go.
“First of all, you need to eat and I need to make sure that you know what this really means, you’ll be our consort.”
“Where’s Spike, shouldn’t he be part of this talk?” Xander asked suddenly looking around for the bleached blond but he couldn’t see him.
“He’s getting some blood cos he’s still healing and as I’m the oldest its my responsibility to make sure you know the facts before we do this because it can never be undone.” Angel knew that Xander would probably say yes but they had never verbalised this before and Xander still might freak at how serious a step this was. Xander was twenty and most people his age weren’t ready for a life long commitment and that was what this was. Even more serious than marriage, it could never be undone.
“This is like marriage, right? But unbreakable.” At Angel’s look of surprise Xander continued, “There’s not much in the Watchers Diaries but the little insight into vampire culture they do possess I have read, even Murdoch’s Diary.”
“How…?”
“Once Giles found out that I was seeing Spike he showed me the relevant passages, even in the books he always kept hidden away from us. He told me that he wasn’t going to try and influence or stop my relationship but that I should go into it knowing all the facts.” Xander trailed off, remembering his wise former mentor.
“I’m sorry,” Angel apologised sincerely, he knew what Giles had meant to Xander. Giles had been more of a parent to Xander than Xander’s actual parents. Xander suddenly switched moods.
“So are we going to do this?” Angel just smirked at him before grabbing Xander’s hand and dragging him upstairs.
