Chapter 21
Buffy slammed Spike into the wall again for emphasis making
the decorative plates dance on the nails they hung on. He was trying to figure
out a way to calm her down so they could discuss the situation like adults. Of
course he was wrong. He should have been honest with her from the beginning.
“Look, pet,” Spike said, attempting to give her his patent
sexy, puppy look. “I didn’t want to bother you. There wasn’t anything you could
do.”
“Oh, so it’s okay for me to be the damsel in distress,” Buffy
replied, gathering his lapels a little tighter in her hands. “But…but,” she
shook him just a bit. “It’s not okay for me to share your problems. Are you a
chauvinist and I just haven’t noticed?”
“No, of course not, lamb. We should be equal partners in
everything,” Spike said calmly.
Lindsey snickered at his feeble attempts to reason with
Buffy as were both his parents. Andrew seemed to be trying to sink into the
background. Spike was outnumbered and losing quickly. He wondered if he should
sink to his knees and beg for mercy.
“You’re being an asshole again,” Buffy stated. She looked
over her shoulder at the others, and apologized, “Sorry for my language,”
before she pinned Spike with another glare. “I should have known. Stupid me,
huh? So, this girlfriend of yours, do you love her? Which one of us are you
playing along?”
“Buffy, I love you,” Spike swore. “Cross my heart and
everything. I broke up with Dru before I even came up here on break.” It was
then that a thought snuck into his muddled brain. He looked over at the
pictures lying face down on the table then back up at Andrew. “You said photos?
They brought you photos?”
“Yeah,” Andrew answered. “They brought me some pictures and
I scanned them in to do the manipulations.”
“Where the hell did Warren and Drusilla get pictures of
Buffy?” Spike asked to no one in particular. “I’m not missing any.”
It couldn’t have worked better. Buffy released him so that
she could snatch up the photos. She thumbed through them with a concentrated
look on her face. Spike looked over her shoulder waiting to see if she could
figure something out. She tossed them back down on the table.
“It was Riley,” Buffy said with a catch in her voice. “I
recognize the earrings. He gave them to me. He shot a roll of pictures of me wearing
them one afternoon.” She looked around at everybody, crossing her arms, daring
them to argue with her. “I was fully clothed.”
“I think it’s time to call your father, Buffy,” Mr. McDonald
said. “I think we need to get the full story and maybe scare that boy a bit.
He’s been causing enough trouble for you.”
“Sounds good to me,” Spike said, nodding his head.
“You are not out of trouble yet,” Buffy snapped, wagging a
finger at Spike. “It’s just delayed a bit.”
Spike rolled his eyes. It was going to take him a while to
earn his way back into her good graces, but he was confident that she would
forgive him eventually.
~~~~~~~~~
For some reason Buffy couldn’t fathom why her father didn’t
blame her for what happened. Mr. McDonald had explained the story to him, and
then shown him the manipulated photos. Her father’s hands had shook as he
rifled through with a sick expression on his face then stood, stating he was
going to have a talk with Riley and his
parents.
He hadn’t said a word to her except to ask her to ride with
him in his patrol car. She’d taken the front seat while Andrew, Spike and
Lindsey crowded in the back. The ride over to the Finn’s was pretty much made
in silence. Her father wasn’t talking and everyone else took their cue from
him. Buffy just wished he would say something because by the time they pulled
into her ex-boyfriend’s driveway she was shaking.
“You boys stay quiet unless I ask you a question,” Sheriff
Summers stated, opening the back door to let them out. “I’ll handle this.” He
hurried around to open the door for his daughter, but Buffy was already
stepping out. “You don’t have anything to be afraid of, okay?”
Buffy nodded, reaching for Spike’s hand before following her
father up to the front door. She wasn’t really afraid, not with Spike and
Lindsey beside her, even her father’s presence was keeping her together. They
wouldn’t let this go until the truth was told. The photos could wreck a lot of
havoc on her life if they weren’t eradicated for good.
“How can I help you?” Mr. Finn asked after he opened the
door to find them all standing on his doorstep.
“I need to ask your son a few questions,” Sheriff Summers
said.
“Did he go and get into some kind of trouble?” Mr. Finn
asked, stepping back and waving them in. “Does this have anything to do with
your daughter? Because I know she broke his heart rather carelessly.”
“Excuse me?” Buffy asked, forgetting her father’s advice
about staying quiet. “He’s the twerp who cheated on me.”
“Quiet Buffy,” her father said. “We’re not here to argue
about who hurt who.” He turned back to Mr. Finn. “I really do need to speak to
Riley. Is he here?”
Buffy wondered for a minute if Riley’s father was going to
hide him or something because he just looked at them for a moment before
nodding his head. “Yeah, he’s here. Have a seat and I’ll get him.”
Not willing to give any ground Buffy continued to stand
while they waited. The others, except for Andrew followed suit. There was a
sound of a door slamming upstairs then a moment later Riley with both his
parents behind him came into the living room.
“Sheriff Summers,” Riley said, stopping in front of Hank.
“My father said that you needed to ask me something.”
“Do you know anything about these?” Hank asked, handing him
the envelope with the photos.
Riley pulled them out then glanced through them with a smirk
on his face. “I’ve never seen them before, sir,” he looked over at Buffy. “If I
had any idea that you were…”
“Watch it,” Spike snarled. “That’s my girl you’re talking
to.”
His body tensed as he prepared to defend her honor. Despite her earlier protestations, Buffy
loved his chivalry. He made her feel protected like no one else did.
“And my daughter,” Hank said, surprising Buffy. “I’ll repeat
my question and you better tell me the truth. Do you know anything about these
photos?”
“Son, do you?” Mr. Finn asked, staring at Riley in
disbelief. He slipped an arm around his wife’s shoulder as she began to cry
when their son didn’t answer.
Buffy felt sorry for them both. They were both decent people
who had been kind to her over the years. It was a shame that she and Riley
couldn’t have ended their relationship as friends. After they left town their
parents still had to be part of the same community. It wasn’t right they had to
possibly lose their friendship because their children couldn’t make their
relationship work.
“I already told you that I didn’t have anything to do with
it,” Riley protested.
There was a trace of fear on his face. Buffy doubted that
anyone but his parents and she would detect it. It wasn’t really visible to
someone who didn’t know him well.
“Riley,” Hank said. “Andrew, over there, has already
confessed to his part in this scheme to slander my daughter’s reputation. He
said that someone gave him the pictures to manipulate. Pictures that Buffy said
you took of her. How did they get out of your hands?”
“I don’t know,” Riley said. “Buffy had a copy. Maybe Spike
took them so he’d have something to fantasize about.”
“Don’t need to,” Spike muttered, getting an elbow in his
side from Buffy.
“All right,” Hank said, shrugging his shoulders. “Realize
though that whoever did give Andrew the pictures will probably implicate you.
You do have a reason to get back at Buffy.”
“I just want the truth,” Buffy said, stepping closer to Riley.
She felt sorry for him. Like her he wanted out of Sunnydale after graduation.
He was planning on joining the military to help pay for his college. He could
lose everything if this wasn’t handled right. She hoped that some of the truth
Spike had given to her father would help. “Someone is not only out to break
Spike and I up, but she’s been getting dangerous. We need to stop her before
someone gets hurt.”
“Okay, okay,” Riley said with a groan. He rubbed his face
before dropping them to look at Hank. “A friend of Forrest goes to UCLA. At
first someone was just asking what Spike was up to while he was here. It didn’t
seem like a big deal so we talked. Then they wanted photos. It was right after
the last confrontation that Buffy and I had. I was pissed so I gave them some.
They said they were just trying to break them. I didn’t know anyone might get
hurt.”
“Who was this friend? Do you know his name?” Hank asked,
pulling out his book to take notes.
“It was Warren
somebody. Forrest would know.”
“Good, we’ll give him a call,” Hank said. “I need you to
come down to the station and write out a statement for me. You’re not in trouble, but we need something
for Buffy to use when she files a complaint.”
“Sure no problem,” Riley said, nodding. He looked over at Buffy
and Spike. “I hope you get whoever did this.”
It was the closest she’d ever come to getting an apology.
Not that it really bothered her that she wouldn’t. She knew the days of Riley
and his friends harassing her were over. Thanks to Spike coming into her life.
She smiled up at him hoping he understood her gratitude. They still needed to
talk about Drusilla but she realized that Spike not telling her wasn’t a
deliberate act of keeping secrets. More like a major omission of the truth in
an attempt to keep her safe. She was confident that they would get things
settled though.
~~~~~~~~
They were making good time back to Los Angles. The highway
wasn’t really busy on a Thursday night giving them the ability to keep a steady
speed. Since Buffy was with them, Spike had given the keys to Lindsey. He
wanted to be cuddling with his girl in the back seat. And he was, too. She was
half lying across his chest with one leg thrown over his outstretched one.
A truce had been declared between them until they reached his
dorm room. It would be too late by the time they got back to speak with the
dean so Buffy was planning on spending the night with him. Actually the next
two nights. They’d asked politely for a little extra time together since they
had obeyed all the rules so far. There hadn’t been any objections from either
the McDonald’s or her father.
Spike was in heaven at the moment. His girl was back in his
arms, her lips were against his, and her tongue was teasing his. The kiss held
all the emotions they’d held back while separated. It was hungry, lusty, and
just a bit desperate. He twisted her hair around his hand to hold her close to
him. If only they were alone then they could fulfill all the need that was
coursing through his body. Buffy wiggled against him trying to closer. He
moaned, cupping her bottom, then shifted downward until he was lying on his
back with her on top of him.
She took advantage of the position letting her legs fall
open around his hips. Her hands held his face as she devoured his mouth. He
frantically searched for his duster on the floorboards. They almost slipped off
the seat before he felt the soft leather with his fingers. He clutched at it
like it was a lifeline then tried to pull it over them. Buffy wasn’t letting go
though making it difficult to hide them from view.
Suddenly the coat was yanked out of his hands. He opened his
eyes to see Andrew throwing it over them before darkness gratefully enveloped
them. In relief he wrapped his arms around her and turned all his attention back
to kissing his girl.
“They’re like dogs in heat,” Andrew said, with a trace of
envy in his voice. “Are they going to do this all the way back?”
“Probably,” Lindsey said. “They haven’t seen each other in over
a month.”
“Ew,” Andrew said. “If they just weren’t making so much
noise.”
“Young love,” Lindsey responded with a laugh. “It’s all
hormones with an emphasis on moans.”
“Funny mate,” Spike said a few minutes later when Buffy
turned her attack to his neck. She was alternately nibbling then sucking all
the right spots making him arch against her in hopes of relieving his aching
erection. He turned to whisper in her ear. “I can’t wait until I get you alone,
pet. Going to make love to you all night.”
She bit his ear lobe. “First we talk with you doing major
apologizing then if you’ve done it to my satisfaction then and only then can we
get to other satisfaction.”
He sighed because it was going to be a long ride with no
relief in sight and he had no one to blame but himself.
