e age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: My beta Bubbysbub not only corrects all my grammar and speeling mistakes but she makes me laugh while doing it.
Feedback: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I’ll get on my knees and beg for feedback both good and bad
Part: 20/?
Distribution: Ask and you will receive
Warnings: The normal language warning and mention of threesome sex as well as violence
Reviews: SIX REVEIWS (DOES SNOOPY DANCE) THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Lady Virgo1956 - I don't actually have my own site though I'm looking into it at the moment but wherever you read it I'm glad you enjoy it and look out for the updates, hope this chapter doesn't dissapoint, thanks for letting me know you enjoy
Kage - Backbone! Wesley is a favourite of mine and I felt it was time Faith dealt with the Watcher's glad you approved hope you like this chapter
Daeomae - What would I do without you? Probably stop posting. Thanks so much and when are we going to see another story from you? Enjoy
Tiffany Baisden - Thanks for telling me you enjoy this, always appreciated. As for the name in Giles's ring its kind of an allusion to a Giles/Ethan romance, read what you want into it. I often allude to other liasons in my fics without doing anything about it, well I did with Perfect but I'm not going to here.
Sagant - If you wait til the entire fic is posted you might be waiting a while, over a hundred pages written and still going strong. Glad you like though and hope you stick with this the whole way through :-)
A/N: A big thanks to Jenn for allowing me to use some of her ideas evident in Playing Games. Buffyworld is back! A big thanks to Howard Russell for bringing such a wonderful resource back online
Chapter Twenty
They stood around still staring at each other in shock. They were fighting a god and so far they had somehow managed to survive. How much longer would they be able to survive was the problem they all had coming to grips with. Some were optimistic that they might be able to make it through this while others were sure that they wouldn’t survive past a minute into their next confrontation with Glory.
Angel shook himself out of his brood, the Watchers Council had left fifteen minutes ago and nobody had moved since. He had plenty of time in the coming days to brood and strategise. Right now, one player had been successfully beaten and he had not come good on his promise to Xander to claim him the minute the Watchers had left. Unfortunately before Angel could come up with an excuse to drag his lovers upstairs Cordelia spoke.
“Wow, you know what? I think I know what we need after all that stress, a party.” At Angel’s glare she misinterpreted and explained.
“I know we need to prepare and all that other stuff but if I don’t get some down time and relieve some of this stress, I’ll break out in pimples or something. Just for a couple of hours, please Angel.” Cordelia pouted at Angel and he finally broke.
“Okay fine, just for a couple of hours.”
“Yes!” Willow hissed, needing to let her hair down and when she thought about it, that was a silly saying.
“What…What about you Faith, you in?” Tara asked wanting to include the Slayer knowing what it felt like to be on the outside.
“I’m always in for a good party.”
“Right that’s settled, Cordelia you rustle up some music and I’m take-out man. What do we want?” Xander asked the group before being inundated with orders. “Wesley why don’t you write down what everyone wants,” he suggested as he ambled up to Angel, one thing on his mind. Xander pulled Angel in for a deep kiss, licking and sucking every inch of Angel’s mouth while his hands went wandering down Angel’s broad back and grabbing handfuls of that fine ass, before moving forward and feeling Angel up. Xander finally broke the kiss and moved back triumphant waving Angel’s credit card in his hand.
“Got it!” he announced smiling gleefully.
“Hey, give that back.” Angel protested while Spike laughed, having watched the whole thing.
“You were pretty easy peaches,” Spike told Angel when Angel shot him a death glare.
“And I bet I know where he learnt it too,” Angel faked growled and stalked towards Spike.
“Okay Spike, looks like you’re coming with me to pick up dinner.” Xander grabbed Spike’s hand and dragged him out the door once they had retrieved the food list. The two of them walked out the hotel bickering comfortably.
“Why’d you have to drag me off, we were only having a bit of fun,” Spike complained.
“I know but I don’t think the others would have appreciated the two of you going at it like rabbits on the lobby floor.” Spike turned to retort when his sensitive hearing picked up a branch snapping close by in the hotel garden. He grabbed Xander close to him listening closely. Xander for his part had picked up the change in body language and stayed still and quiet. If Spike sensed something was not quite right then it probably was, hopefully it wasn’t the Watchers changing their collective mind.
Spike searched around the compound for the source of the noise. He couldn’t see anyone but he could smell people, eight humans. It was a trap. Spike attempted to push Xander slowly back to the hotel door but just then the strangers sprang into action. Two men under specific instructions barricaded everyone else inside the hotel by placing a branch through the door handles jamming them shut and buying the team enough time to grab the targets and disappear. The balaclava clad professionals quickly surrounded Spike and Xander, who had immediately moved back to back.
Inside Angel suddenly looked up from where he was talking to Willow. He could smell Xander’s fear, something was going on outside. He could also smell something else or more specifically someone else; Lindsey McDonald. Growling he took off to the doors, finding them jammed shut he started pushing his entire strength against them. He had to get outside. The others looked around first startled and then concerned at the animalistic noises Angel was making. Faith was the first to spring into action when they heard shouts from outside breaking the spell of shocked silence over all of them. Figuring that Xander and Spike were in trouble she was quickly by Angel’s side slowly pushing the door open and breaking whatever was blocking their exit.
Meanwhile the men around Spike and Xander didn’t attack straight away, it was like they were waiting for something. Spike didn’t want to make the first move as he was sure that these sods thought him impotent and he wanted to keep the element of surprise for as long as possible. A shadow walked out from the archway to the road, becoming an immaculately dressed man with light brown hair and sparkling blue eyes.
“You’re surrounded Spike, and your Sire can’t rescue you so why don’t you and Alexander Harris come with us nice and quiet.” Spike could hear the Texas drawl hiding behind the polish crisped tones and he glanced down at the man’s hands for conformation before replying.
“Now why would I want to do that, Lindsey?” Spike asked apparently reasonably.
“He told you about me, did he?” Lindsey smirked, “then you’d know that I don’t back down, I know all about your chip Spike and do you really think your human lover can deal with eight trained professionals? This is the last chance for the two of you to come quietly.” The sounds of banging were heard as well as Angel’s furious growling and Lindsey moved, deciding that they needed to leave before a pissed off Angel made it out of his hotel.
“Right then, we’ll do it your way,” with a nod Lindsey moved back out of the way and the lackeys moved in on Spike and Xander. Spike and Xander immediately went into fighting positions. Usually Spike wouldn’t worry about Xander holding his own against a human especially when Spike had showed him a couple of moves but Xander’s arm was still healing and these were trained professionals. Oh well, there wasn’t much he could do about it now, just try to keep the pounces busy.
One special ops guy finally attacked, attempting to grab Xander and put a knife to his throat, but the Scooby fought back. Xander stomped on his foot then kneed him in the groin before using a move on the guys nose that Spike had taught him. It left Xander’s knuckles whole but the guy with a serious nosebleed. The next guy decided to try Spike and he grabbed Spike by the shoulder so that he could drag Spike towards the car. He didn’t expect Spike to punch him in the nose but to stay upright himself. Lindsey’s eyes widened as he watched Spike not crumple over in pain but instead take out the rest of the guards in three seconds flat.
Lindsey looked around wildly, cursing the inaccuracy of the information he received. Spike was walking menacingly towards him and Xander had retrieved a gun from one of the fallen security team and was pointing it unerringly at Lindsey.
“Your…Your chip…” Lindsey stuttered eyes widening, he stumbled back until his back hit the hotel brick wall; he was trapped. Spike seemed to think about it for a moment before grabbing his head as if in pain.
“The pain… The pain is gone!” Spike smirked at Lindsey feeling liberated, in control and every inch the big bad. He stalked closer before suddenly standing still in shock. It was impossible. He flew forward in full game face and grabbed Lindsey by the neck, pinning him against the wall so that his feet were dangling above the ground.
“What do you want?” Lindsey managed to get out, scrabbling uselessly against Spike’s hand.
“I wanna know why you smell like a vampire bitch who’s been ash for four years,” Spike growled out leaning his head in to Lindsey’s neck. Lindsey decided that he might as well tell this wannabe punk, if things had gone to plan Angel would have already been firmly in Wolfram and Harts clutches by now, but maybe something could still be gained from this screw up of a situation.
“We brought her back,” Lindsey ground out with a smirk of his own.
“In that wooden box?” Lindsey wondered for a moment how long Spike had been back with Angel if he knew about that but he didn’t dwell on it as he had more important things to worry about, like how he was going to get out of this.
Spike could hear Angel banging on the hotel door and knew that he would be out in a moment, and so incensed he would be likely to tear the lawyer from limb to limb. Spike needed more information out of the lawyer though.
“If you have her why did you try to take us?” Spike asked shaking Lindsey again for good measure.
“She’s human but dying of syphilis. We were going to take your chip out and get you to turn her.” Lindsey replied, he often found that telling the truth did more damage then lying.
“Yeah, well I wouldn’t have turned her.”
“That’s why the boy, we would of taken either you or Angel but it had to be the boy.” Behind them their was a roar and a great cracking. The branch had broken. Xander turned his head at the sound and so did not see the head of the security team, who had been waiting for such an opportunity, shoot Spike with a stake loaded gun. Xander did see Spike go down and Lindsey fall out of his jacket that Spike was still holding before running towards the gate. Xander didn’t hesitate, he fired. Lindsey staggered but kept going and the security guy was beside him helping him along as Xander fired shot after shot, not even seeing, just reliving the look of anguish of Spike’s face as he fell down, stake in his chest.
Xander did not, could not move until strong arms eased around him, holding him, urging him to let go of the gun in his hands. A feminine voice in his ear gently urging him to let go, that it was all okay, that Spike wasn’t dust and that if he would just let go of the gun he could go to Spike and Angel and see for himself. Xander blinked for a moment before suddenly comes back to himself as loud English cursing was heard.
“Bloody fucking hell, that asshole wanker!” Xander strained forward, the gun sliding off his limp fingers as he attempted to get to Spike. The strong arms around him let him go and he stepped forward only a couple of times before sliding down onto his knees then crawling the last couple of inches until he could curl up at Spike’s side, reassuring himself that Spike wasn’t dust but very much animated and what passes for alive in a vampire.
Angel had his coat propped under Spike’s head as he examined the stake in Spike’s chest. Spike was very lucky, if the stake had been one centimetre to the left, Spike wouldn’t… well they were lucky. Angel reflected that it was probably Lindsey McDonald who was lucky because if the security guard had succeeded, Wolfram and Hart would be history. Angel gently grabbed the stake embedded in his childe’s chest and carefully worked it backwards out of Spike. He ignored Spike’s yells, just glad that his childe could make them. Finally the stake was gone and a hand gave Angel bandages which he used to stop the bleeding until Spike’s vampire regenerative powers started doing their magic. Angel finally looked up into pain filled eyes not sure what to say but Wesley interrupted them.
“How could Spike knock these people unconscious with the chip?” Wesley stared at the three lovers entwined on the cold ground. He knew that the chip was working when the Scoobies reached the Hyperion. They had all heard the screams and Spike was unconscious from the pain when Angel brought him up from the garage, but Spike effectively stopped Wolfram and Hart’s lackeys who were all clearly human, yet his head wasn’t paining him.
“Wesley, Wolfram and Hart were trying to kidnap Spike and Xander to probably use them against me, which would have worked too. Spike stopped them from doing that, so what’s the problem?”
“I’m not saying he shouldn’t of stopped them, I’m quite glad he did, I just wish you’d consulted us before you had the chip removed.”
“What? The chips’ removed?” Cordelia almost shrieked, she wasn’t sure what she thought about that. Gunn had been wheeling around the black clad bodies touching a neck here and a wrist there while listening to the conversation.
“They’re all alive, the only vamp I’ve ever known to leave people alive who have threatened what’s its, is Angel.” Gunn’s meaning was clear to everyone, Spike wasn’t an ordinary soulless killer. One of the unconscious men groaned, a pre cursor to wakefulness. Angel glanced around at them before internally shrugging to himself. Angel decided to just leave Wolfram and Hart’s employees where they were, they could limp home once they came round.
“Can we discuss this inside?” Angel asked and the others nodded or mumbled their agreement as they made their way inside. Angel helped Spike to stand and silently encouraged him to lay his weight on Angel. Xander cuddled up to Spike on the other side and Spike spared a look at him as they made their way inside.
“You did good out there, kept your head… well, until you thought I was a goner, but I don’t blame you there.” Spike tried to reassure Xander who seemed more upset about the encounter than Spike himself was.
“I shot a man Spike, there’s no excuse for that.” A light bulb went on in both of Xander’s lovers heads.
“You didn’t kill him baby boy,” Angel reassured helping Spike to get settled on the couch in the lobby.
“Are you sure?” Xander asked plaintively.
“A hundred percent certain pet, he’s still around to be the bloody thorn in our bloody side.” Spike demonstrated how bloody it was by taking the very bloody makeshift bandage away from the gaping hole in his chest and inspecting the damage for himself.
“Hopefully Lindsey will go back with his tail between his legs and they won’t bother us for a while,” Angel told them optimistically until he turned and saw the look on Spike’s face. “There’s something you’re not telling me.” Angel sank down next to Spike; he wasn’t sure that he wanted to know.
“Yeah there is. I know what they brought back in that box last year and you’re not going to like it.” Wesley perked up at this news, finally. They had searched for that being for long months before giving up under the pressure of maintaining a business.
“What is it?” Wesley asked eagerly.
“They brought back Darla.”
