After weeks, Tara had been able to get Willow talking normally again, and they had worked her muscles back up, but Willow was still quite distant with Buffy and the gang, and didn't like to eat much. She mostly kept to the room with the blinds and curtains closed, but whenever Tara would ask her about it, Willow would blow it off. "A headache", or "Just tired". Tara sighed, opening the door slowly to let Willows eyes adjust to the sudden flood of light. Willow looked over from seemingly staring at the ceiling, smiling a little.
"Hey baby.." Tara flashed a forced smile, bringing a plate with a sandwich over to the bed.
"You need to get out of bed more, or your muscles will get weak again." Willows smile faded.
"I just.. I see the looks they give me Tare. Like they're afraid I'll break any second." Tara handed Willow the plate, watching as she picked it up, examining it carefully before taking a small bite.
"Spending all your time in here, in the dark, not speaking or seeing them, won't help." Willow shrugged.
"Maybe not. But I just cant stand their.. Their pity. And for some.. Some.. Stupid reason, I.. I get scared of them if they come close or ask me a question." Tara moved closer to rub Willows back as she took another small bite.
"You went through something horrible.. They understand that. Its understandable to.. Be on edge." Willow shook her head, tears appearing in her eyes,
"B-But.. They're.. /Them/.. T-The scooby gang! My.. My best friends! How can I be afraid of them? Is there something wrong with me? What's wrong with me?!" Tara pulled Willow close as she started to cry, her heart aching.
"Oh Willow… There's nothing wrong with you Sweetie.." Willow clutched her shirt tightly, shaking her head,
"There /has/ to be."
"Will, the only way for you to stop being afraid and adjust to the scoobies again.. Is for you to go out of the room. Actually interact. Theres a scooby meeting today, are we're both going to it." Willow pulled away to look at her in shock and fear,
"N-No, I can't! I can't even help myself, how am I supposed to help them?!" Tara pushed a lock of hair away from Willows face gently,
"You'll find a way, you always do. Now finish your sandwich." Willow shook her head, pushing the plate back to her. Tara frowned, looking at the not even half eaten sandwich. "Full?" Willow nodded, looking at the floor. "Will, you only took a couple bites.."
"S-Sorry.." Tara sighed, helping her up.
"No sweetie, you don't have to be sorry. It'll probably be a while before you have more of an appetite. For now, lets get dressed." Willow pouted,
"Do we have to go?" Tara nodded firmly,
"They will probably need help researching, and besides, we /are/ living in /their/ apartment. We owe it to them to at least try to help." Willow reluctantly nodded and changed into a t-shirt and sweatpants. Tara had already dressed for the day, so as soon as Willow was done, she ushered her out the door.
"Come on, just a peak-"
"No, Xand, We're waiting for Will and Tara-" Buffy looked up as the door opened, smiling anxiously with the rest of the gang as Willow stepped out behind Tara, hands in her pockets.
"Uh.. Hey guys.." These were 'the looks'. Willow felt each of them burning into her skin. Giles cleared his throat from in an armchair,
"Hello. Uh.. We were just about to get started.. Have a seat." Willow forced a smile and shuffled over to sit on the end of the couch, pressing against the arm. Tara sat next to her, grabbing her hand and giving a gentle squeeze as Buffy started,
"On patrol last night I uh.. Found a body, in the woods. The.. Ground around it was uh.. Burnt up and dry. There wasn't a spot of blood or any burns on the body, so I'm guessing er.." The slayer paused, stealing a quick glance at Willow before looking back to the others, "I'm guessing magic. 'Cause there were no visible marks but the person was definitely dead. Looks like whoever did it covered the body in leaves to try and.. Hide it, i guess?"
"Could be a sign of guilt." Giles chimed in, taking a sip from his tea.
"I hate to say it," Xander started hesitantly, "But we might be dealing with a human.. Witch, here." Both Willow, Tara and Buffy tensed,
"We thought that before. But it was just Hansel and Gretel." Dawn gave her sister a look and Giles spoke up again, taking his glasses off to clean them.
"Xander has a point, Buffy. That demon had a public agenda - It wanted to turn the town against each other and burn witches at the stake," Willow and Buffy both shuddered at the memory. Giles continued, "But.. Hiding the body or-or even just covering it out of guilt.. It just doesn't fit. I have to agree with Xander. We're looking for a human." Buffy suddenly coughed like she had something in her throat, pulling something from her jacket pocket.
"I uh.. Took a picture when I found it.. To uh.. Show the burns on the ground and.. Lack of on the body.." She tossed a Polaroid photo on the table and looked away. Everyone tensed, all their shocked gazes - even Taras - flashing to look at Willow. Willow, herself, was frozen, staring wide-eyed at the body that looked eerily like Kennedy. Stomach churning, Willow stumbled up from the couch and to the bathroom, closing and locking the door behind her before throwing up into the toilet. Once her stomach stopped heaving, she stumbled back to lean her back against the wall, fighting for breath. She wasn't sure if the tears were from throwing up or because she knew her friends were blaming her for this murder. Both, probably. Trying to calm her breathing, she listened to what was happening in the other room.
"It couldn't have been her! She's been in the room the whole time!" Willows heart twisted to hear Tara defending her.
"Do we know that for /sure/? With powers like hers, it wouldn't take long to do something like this.." Giles replied solemnly.
"S-She wouldn't do it even if she c-could!" Willows heart sank at the stutter and the twinge of doubt seeping into her girlfriends voice. {They're all going to think I did it!} Willow screamed to herself silently, {They'll kick me out! I can't live on my own! I haven't lived on my own for years! And.. And I wont only be /living/ alone, I'll be /fully/ alone! If they think I killed someone.. Else..} She paused at that thought. They had every right to think it was her. Refocusing her mind, she heard a solemn, yet firm voice.
"Look.. Tara.. I don't want to believe it was her. None of us do. But.." Buffy paused as if searching for words, "She /has/ killed before. Twice, not counting the warlock. She promised after Warren that it'd never happen again but.. Then she killed Kennedy. And.. These bodies - these girls.. They look.. If she.. Has hidden anger.." Willow teared up, hearing Xander add,
"If this is her.. It'll only be a matter of time before she gives up the look-a-like killings and moves on to others. And I'm not sure we would be able to stop her a third time, if she went that far." Willow fought quietly for breath, trembling. {Both Xander and Buffy think its me!}
"I… W-What are w-we going to d-d-do..?" Willow was sure her heart sank right out of her chest at that moment. {Tara believes it too?!} Her world seemed to spin. No one believed in her right now - not even Tara, the person she trusted more than anyone.
"We uh.. We could put some sort of magic ward on her and uh.. Use.. Uh.. Something to keep her contained to the room-" Hearing this, Willows fear kicked in, snapping her from her daze. They were going to lock her up. Probably put spells on her to contain her magic.. Maybe more. She couldn't stay here. The /real/ killer could be getting away while they thought it was her! Of course, had she been thinking completely rationally at that point, she would have known that running away was the absolute wrong way to go. But when you hear your friends turning on you and planning to lock you up, would you think clearly? Willow rushed to the window, pushing the curtains aside and carefully lifting it open. Conveniently, it didn't squeak or make any noise to give her away. Looking down out the window, Willows stomach lurched in fear at the height. One wrong move and she would be a pancake down there with all the speedy cars. She shook her head, her eyes drifting to the fire escape that was set up for the window for the living room. {The jump is.. Possible, I think…} Through the window, she could see the gang get up and shuffle towards the bathroom, all on edge. With an ache of her heart, she noticed Tara followed with her head down. Her hair covered her face just as it had that first time they had met eyes in the Wicca group. Willow shook her head again, focusing on the fire escape. {Tara will be even more upset if she finds out i'm innocent and the killer got away in the process.} She took a deep breath, hearing the first hesitant knock on the bathroom door. {I can do it.. Just.. Dont look down..}
"Willow..?" She winced at Buffys voice from behind the bathroom door, silently apologizing to all her friends as she climbed onto the window ledge. Taking another deep breath, she leaped for the fire escape.
((And im back with the cliffhangers! Or shall i say fire escape hangers? That was horrible. Horrible jokes aside, this is kind of short still, but not so sweet. We're starting to get actual plot and its only the first chapter. Am I too rushed with this? Perhaps.}
