Xander reopened THE NEXUS Option screen and stared, but not to hard, at it while he tried to make up his mind. Part of him definitely found the ‘mystery’ idea far more tempting than it should be. There were so many things it could be and despite himself all the fun possibilities filled his mind first; starships, spies, superheroes could all be in the offing. Of course there was a downside to each of those, if he played Jimmy Olsen to Buffy’s Superman he’s probably end up being kidnapped and attack more than last time around. Really going back to Sunnydale, the Sunnydale he knew, would be the safest bet. It would give him the chance to get his sea legs, learn the ropes, and maybe rack up some easy points before trying out something else. The western would be cheap and he had always liked Eastwood movies.
“You know I don’t have all day.” Anyanka tapped her foot on the non-existent floor.
“You don’t?”
“Well, I kind of do since time doesn’t exist here but I don’t want to stay here. It’s pretty boring.”
“Just, just give me a minute.” As a test he tried to select the rules submenu by focusing on it, almost squinting, until it was replaced by a long greyed out list. “Tell me about how this rule changing thing works.”
“You spend shards to unlock options and then you get to set them separately for each scenario. That they apply to that is. There’s no point changing vampires’ weakness in a world without them. Some options you can unlock more than once to expand the range.” She could see that he didn’t quite understand so she tried to explain. “Say you create a world without shrimp only to decide later that you need to get rid of all crustaceans, it might take a second purchase to push things that far.”
Xander could understand that, for the most part, but it also meant that he wouldn’t know what options were available to him until he got into a scenario. Unless he wanted to change the gender ratio or get rid of shrimp that is. “One last question; will you be here when I get back?”
“Maybe why?”
“Just want to know if this was goodbye.” Xander didn’t give her a chance to come up with a response just focusing in on his choice and found himself on a skateboard.
He hadn’t ridden one in years so trying to weave his way through the morning crowd outside Sunnydale High, especially given his recent transportation through space and time, was more than his atrophied skills could handle. It was just a matter of time before he landed on his ass but if he was lucky he wouldn’t take anyone down with him. He could steer, a little, but there were still too many people.
“Excuse me, coming through. MAKE A HOLE.” Okay he probably hadn’t yelled that last time but it worked clearing a path for him all the way to the base of the stairs where he folded around the handrail.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah I’m-” Buffy was standing over him. Today must be the day that he met her but it hadn’t been like this; she hadn’t witnessed his accident and they hadn’t talked until later. “I’m fine. I can’t stand up but I’m fine.”
“Let me help you.” She gave him a hand so that between her and the handrail he was able to get to his feet. Xander knew she could have picked him up on her own if she wanted to but at this point she wouldn’t have gotten comfortable with her strength yet. “Do you want to go to the nurse? I don’t know where it is but I’m sure there is one.”
“No, just just let me catch my breath.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah I’ll be fine. Go.” He must have been convincing because she went, heading into the school with one last glance over her shoulder before he waved her on. Should he have said more? Should he have let her know that he knew who she was? What she was? How would he explain knowing what he knew?
“Xander, Earth to Xander.”
“Will. Hi.” Willow dressed in the type of plaid dress she use to wear had come up while he was lost in thought.
“You were kind of space-y there.”
“I hit my head.”
“Oh… so are you going to ask me?”
“Ask you?”
“For help with your homework.”
“Homework, yeah that.”
“It’s what we do. You ask for help, I give it to you, you promise to do better only to come back around next week.”
“That sounds about right.”
“Hey, new girl.” Jesse came bouncing down the stairs landing next to them.
“Jesse!” Xander hugged his tall friend. “I haven’t seen you since-” you died.
“Yesterday.”
“Right, yesterday.” Time to break the hug and reduce the awkward.
“What’s wrong with you?”
“He hit his head.”
“Oh… Anyway, new girl.”
“I heard there was a transfer.” Willow and Jesse continued the conversation while Xander looked for his skateboard. “Do you know anything about her?”
“She’s new.”
“Her name is Buffy.” Both of his friends looked at him. “What? I know things.”
Like where the nurse’s office was. He wouldn’t mind an ice-pack and waiting for it would give him a chance to think and try to figure a few things out. He was apparently in the middle of the tutorial so he couldn’t access the options screen. He could look at his own screen, which six starting skills, but even though they were listed as party members he couldn’t look at Jesse or Willow. A little more poking around and he found the Challenge page. Currently there was only one thing listed but there were other slots greyed out meaning he could likely buy upgrades so that he could face more than one challenge at a time.
Tutorial: Welcome to the Hellmouth (Green)
Meet the new girl and learn the secret of Sunnydale.
Reward: One point per Party Member saved.
Penalty: Lose Party Members.
He’d already met Buffy, sort of, but maybe it didn’t count since they hadn’t exchanged named. That should be easy enough to handle, if he remembered right he was going to run into her at least two more times before the school day was over, but the other half was less clear. Was he going to have go through the whole eavesdropping in library thing or could he skip right to saving Jesse and Willow that night? Could he save them before they got picked up by vamps or would they have to go all game face for it count as revealing the ‘secret’?
Since the nurse’s office was in the same hall as the principal’s Xander was on hand when Buffy was done with Mr. Flutie and spilled her bag. “Here let me help you.”
“Thank you.” Between the two of them they started picking up her things.
“Well I owe you; I went to nurse and got an ice pack.”
“Did you find it okay?”
“Yeah, I know my way around town. I could help you if you need it.”
“It’s that obvious that I’m new?”
“Well, I haven’t seen you before. I’m Xander by the way.” He offered her his hand as they both stood.
“I’m Buffy, I’m new.”
“I know.”
“Yeah, right.” A strained smile and tucking back her hair on her part meant that he had embarrassed her.
“Don’t worry about it. And don’t forget your stake, you’re going to need it.” That earned him a strange look as she snatched the piece of wood he had picked up from his hand and hurried off to class. “That could have gone better.”
Xander spent the rest of the day trying to remember how school worked; he could barely recall his schedule or where the classes were, and he couldn’t remember any of the assignments. By lunch his odd behaviour, and his repeated use of his head injury to explain it, had him sent back to nurse’s office. Another half hour there, during which he watched Buffy meet Willow and Jesse in the quad, and then he was sent home.
There was no reason for him to tell his parents about that, not that they would really notice, but it did give him a few extra hours to prepare for tonight. If he was going to fight vampires, and save his friends, he was going to need weapons and it wasn’t like they sold swords at the corner store. Stakes were easy enough to whip up but without Slayer strength it was hard to drive one through a ribcage. Really what he needed was an axe with a good edge that would fit in the bat bag he had left over from his one season of little league. One look at the rusted state of the axe in his garage sent him to the hardware store.
After dark, and spending all his money, Xander stood in an alley with his supplies near the Bronze hoping to spot his friends on their way out. He knew that his friends got picked up separately by vamps inside the club and would end up in the same crypt but he was fuzzy on the timing. Did seeing Buffy walking down the street mean she was heading in or coming out?
“Hey, Buff. Looking for something?”
“Yeah, ah,” the blonde kept looking around, “do you know Willow?”
“You’re looking for Willow? Crap. This way.” Hoisting the bag to his shoulder he started jogging towards the closest cemetery.
“Where are you going?”
“Vampires.” Maybe that would get her to follow.
“What do you meaning vampires?” Buffy had no problem keeping up with him and holding a conversation. “What do you know?”
“I told you I know things; I know that vamps have Willow and Jesse. Let’s focus on that.” She grumbled but she followed, cocking an eyebrow when he stopped to pull out the axe. Stepping inside they found a pair of vampires herding their friends towards the back wall. Not being present for most of the fight last time Xander didn’t know exactly how things had played out but Buffy’s criticism of the male vamp’s clothes seemed in character.
She drew the two off to the side, giving Willow a path to door which is where they exited last time letting the Slayer handle things but this time Xander hung around. He motioned for his friends to stay while he waited for an opening. When Buffy captured the female vamp’s full attention, by dusting her partner, Xander swung his axe.
While he knew the concept he lacked the experience at this point so he failed to take off the vamp’s head instead embedding the axe blade in her shoulder and turning her round when he tried to pull it out. On the up side this did put her back to Buffy so that the Slayer could finish her off with one blow. The crypt cleared the four of them could leave, Xander and Buffy leading the way while Willow supported the injured Jesse.
There were more vamps outside, which he remembered, but a few wild swings kept them back while Buffy thinned their numbers. Xander didn’t get any kills of his own but a tipping point was shortly reached where neither party wanted to keep fighting and they were able to go their separate ways. Leaving the cemetery and crossing a street they started to feel safe.
“Willow, how about you get Jesse home and patched up. I’ll try to explain everything in the morning. And you,” Buffy held Xander back with a hand on his chest, “you’re coming with me to explain what’s going on.”
“Sure, no problem. Going where?”
“I don’t know. I have to find someone first. Come on.”
They ended up going back to the Bronze so she could find Giles and then the three of them were going to ride in his car to the school, apparently they were going to talk at the library. Until then he had some time to think about what he was going to say. And to look at the menus.
He had completed the tutorial, earning two points in the process, so he could access THE NEXUS Options again but that also meant he could spend points or select a new challenge. The challenge menu was divided into columns, one for each color or difficulty (green, yellow, orange, and red) and one for ‘story’. Apparently there were some challenges that had to be done in a certain order. Right now the only story options were two different versions of The Harvest; the yellow one said ‘help the Slayer stop the Harvest’ and the orange was ‘stop the Harvest for the Slayer’.
He couldn’t find out the rewards for either without selecting them, which he wasn’t ready to do just yet, so he looked at the green column for a bit hoping that one of the easier challenges would be more attractive. The top of the list was ‘Make Friends (Buffy): Convince the Slayer to join your party’, followed by a whole alphabets of random patrols. Maybe he could search them somehow.
