The Cordettes almost seemed like an inventory card: it said it could only be played on a rival, popular character and it boosted her traits one level and further increased her dislike. It said he could discard it for 100+ points.
Harmony was similar; though Xander noticed unlike the Cordettes she could be played as a companion or as a character on her own.
“I wish I had known I had an opponent, or who they were,” Xander thought. “They saw I made things worse with Cordelia and decided to pile on. Okay, I have to improve relations with Cordy or else my reputation will be trashed and I’ll never be able to build a party.”
Xander hadn’t seen any interactions on Cordy’s character so he clicked on his profile, selected interaction, and clicked on Cordelia.
Three options presented themselves:

Xander expected that arguing with her would yield even worse relations which was probably why he was getting points. He was tempted by flirt, but he needed Cordelia to stop talking so poorly about him now and he doubted flirting would get him there quickly, especially with the flaws he had. Apologies might work for someone else, but not Cordelia. That left one option:

Well, it got him what he wanted, even with a little downside. Fortunately the only Nerd characters in the game were Willow and Fred. Willow was a permanent friend and he had gotten pretty big boost to relations with Fred. The interaction wasn’t enough to move Cordelia away from being a ‘bitter’ rival so he went to interact with her again.
The same three options presented themselves again, but this time with different costs:

It seemed like doing the same action repeatedly increased the costs. Well, things were pretty bad with Cordelia, so best to try and fix it some more.

Xander went back to her profile and was glad to see that she had dropped to just a rival again. The penalties she was hitting him with weren’t nearly as harsh.
He paused to look over what he had available. He had three actions, 295 points, and Willow was tapped. It was only in scanning the screen that he noticed that another event was out. He had been in such a hurry to fix things up with Cordelia that he hadn’t even checked it.

Part of him thought that while the version of him that was in the game might be a high schooler, the one at the computer wasn’t, or he’d never be able to resist selecting that.

He didn’t need to improve relations with Willow, he was tapped out on Cordelia, didn’t care about Angel, was in an alright position with Fred, and didn’t know what he could do about a Drokken, so instead he looked to Buffy.
