Chapter Two:
LA:
A caravan of blacked-out SUVs rolled to a stop in
front of the Hyperion Hotel in downtown LA.
Dragon hopped out of the front SUV.
“Stay here. I’ll be back in a few
minutes.” She headed for the front door
of the Hotel.
“Where are you going?” A male voice asked from about halfway down
the caravan.
“Inside.
Where else would I be going, Dama?”
Dragon raised an eyebrow in question.
No answer. “That’s what I
thought.” Dragon continued through the
door to the Hotel, only to find herself on the wrong side of a sword.
“Who are you and what do you want?” The man at the other end of said sword asked,
trying to be stern but not quite reaching the goal.
“My name is Dragon and I’m here to see Angel. I’ve got a van with a Nagra demon family
inside. They need a place to stay for
awhile. Though why I’m talking to you
and not to Angel is a mystery to me right now.”
Sarcasm in most situations works but in others it just makes things a
lot worse than needed.
“Angel is incapacitated at the moment and will
continue to be so for a couple more days.
I’m in charge in as long as he is not able to be here,” the man
said. Dragon rolled her eyes as no more
information seemed to be forthcoming.
“Now if you don’t start giving me more information,
I’m going to get mean. Who are
you?” Dragon fingered the dagger
suddenly in her hands.
“His name is Wesley Wyndom-Price,” a voice laced
with an Irish brogue said. “Dragon, I
thought I heard your voice.”
“Yeah Papa.
I’ve got a family of Nagra demons that could use your help and a place
to stay.” Dragon told Angel as the
people directly in front of her backed off, allowing Angel to walk right up to
her.
“They can stay as long as they need.” Dragon gave a quick nod before disappearing
back out the door to collect her charges.
Angel turned to everyone else in the lobby and held up a hand. “Later, right now we need to get a suite of
rooms ready for the Nagra family.”
*Outside*
Dragon walked over to the van with the Nagra
family. She nodded by way of greeting
towards a number of the people with her on her way to said van. She grabbed a hold of the handle and gave a
yank. The door opened with a whoosh and two bouncy kids bounced out
of the car and started to play chase. A
few of the other black-clad people joined in.
Dragon smiled as the two adult with baby Nagra carefully made their own
way out of the van.
“Do you think this will do for awhile?” Dragon asked with a sweeping arm gesture
towards the big Hotel. “There’s plenty
of room here and I know the owner of the place so there’s no worry about the
cost or whatever.” A gaggle of giggles
flowed around them as Shrasta and his mate took stock of their surroundings.
“This place will be safe for our younglings?”
“As safe as any place in downtown LA can be expected
I guess.” She turned to face them. “My dad and the people whom he works with
are…good at what they do.”
“And what do they do?”
She smiled.
“They do what I do; they help people, demons, whoever happens to need
help at the time.”
Shrasta and his mate nodded in understanding. “This will be good for our younglings I
think.”
“Good.”

Sunnydale:
*Ring*
*Ring*
“Bloody hell, who’d be callin at this time of day?”
a bleached blonde menace grumbled to himself as he reached for his phone. “Hello?”
“Spike,”
“Well if it ain’t the great poof hisself. Whadya want Sire?” Spike asked sitting up in bed.
“Spike, Dragon’s in LA. She’ll be here for a few days if you would
like to bring Buffy and the others with you when you come. That way we can tell our combined people
everything they want to know without too much trouble.”
“Wot? Are you
saying what I think you’re saying? I can
tell whoever I trust?” Spike knew he
sounded hopeful and like a total poncey twit but he couldn’t help himself.
Angel chuckled on the other end of the line. “Yes childe you can tell whoever you
trust.” The smile left Angel’s
voice. “On another note, Angelus and I
have been merging because our daughter needs her father to be whole and this is
the only way we know how to give her what she needs. She also needs her big brother, William.”
That was when Spike knew Angel was for real. He knew all too well he’d do anything for
Dragon, no matter the cost.
“Alright I’ll call when we’re on the road or
something.” Spike didn’t talk “right”
all the time, if people knew he could speak well, well, it would ruin his whole
Big Bad image he spent so long creating.
“See you Spike.”
Spike hung up then just lay in bed thinking of how
to tell the Scoobies without them going all apeshit.
~*Later That Evening*~
Spike walked towards the Watcher’s apartment where
everyone was waiting. He could hear
Xander telling them he wanted to tell them something and that it was important
and for them to listen carefully and not interrupt or anything. Spike just had to grin at his boy and his
confidence. In the two weeks since
they’d been together Xander’s confidence in himself had made a vast
improvement. Now all Spike had to do was
explain about a family member who isn’t entirely a vampire then shoo them all
to LA and the Giant Poofter himself.
The door to the apartment burst open and Spike
rubbed out what was left of his cigarette under a Doc Marten. He smiled a smug smile at Giles but it
disappeared as soon as he locked eyes with Xander’s confused ones.
“Spike if you would be so kind as to enlighten us as
to why you wished us to be packed for a trip and to meet here.” Spike shook his head. Giles always had to be the first one to start
the conversation ball rolling.
Spike stalled for a few more minutes by taking stock
of the room. Willow and Buffy were
sitting on the couch while Dawn and Xander sat in the only two chairs in the
living area and they were grinning, they were always grinning over something
nowadays. Giles was standing in the
little hallway leading to the kitchen, leaning against the wall taking the
shine off his lenses. Spike walked
around the couch so the Witch and Slay-Bitch wouldn’t get cricks in their necks
simply because he loved his Xander so much.
Well, he actually liked the Witch and Tara had been nice while she had
been alive.
Spike sighed.
Took a couple deep breaths then began the very beginning of the story
that they needed to hear at that moment.
“Once upon a time there lived a young girl of about
five years old. She had dark hair and
dark eyes and was tan due to her heritage and her time in the sun with her
sister and any adult who would sit with them.
But this isn’t a fairytale and the story isn’t all mine to tell. Angel owns most of it along with another
member of our clan. And Angel has
cordially invited all of us for a stay at the Hyperion Hotel in LA. This way all those involved will be able to
tell the story and all of your questions may be answered to the fullest
extent.” By the time he was done
speaking, everyone was wearing gob smacked expressions with their mouths
hanging open and most of his Big Bad image was in tattered shreds, not
irreparable but it would take awhile to fix.
“Well be that as it may, we are not just going to
pick up and take a trip up to LA, Spike.
Even if I were so inclined to do so I do not believe everyone else is
taken by the idea of LA.” Spike rolled
his eyes at Giles and his negativity.
Thank whoever was listening for Xander. “I’m going to go if only to just bug the shit
out of Deadboy and Cordelia. Plus
meeting another family member of Spike’s who isn’t insane up to the gills would
be a nice addition to the weekend.”
Xander smiled at Spike as Spike’s head snapped around to study his
‘boy.’ Spike smiled in return.
“I wanna go too.
Spike may need the support if the rest of you don’t go,” Dawn piped up.
Buffy sighed in resignation. “I’m going too it seems. No way am I letting Dawn go by herself, sorry
Xander I know you’d try your best not to let anything hurt her,” Spike opened
his mouth, “I know you wouldn’t let anything happen to her either Spike seeing
as how you consider her family and all.”
Buffy raised a hand to forestall any other comments. “Let me finish before you all chime in or
whatever. Trusting Spike didn’t happen
all at once but ever since that spell Willow cast a while back and how I
remember once Spike considers someone family they’re pretty much safe from
him. Mean look at him. He doesn’t have that stupid military chip in
his head anymore and he hasn’t killed a single innocent person.”
“Innocent being the keyword, right Buffy?” Xander.
Buffy nodded in response. “If we’re going to go we should go now. Dawn go put your things in the trunk of the
DeSoto. The rest of us will be along in
a few minutes.”
Everyone watched as Dawn did as she was asked without
complaint which wasn’t really like her if Buffy was doing the ordering around.
Buffy eyed Willow and Giles while Spike and Xander
waited for the fireworks.

LA:
Angel hung up the phone for what felt like the
hundredth time that day.
“Y’know it’s not good for you to do that,
right? Mean I know it’s what you do but
seriously, I believe it’s time to give up the brooding thing to someone else
for a change.”
Angel couldn’t help the grin that wanted nothing
more than to spread across his face but he fought it down and the most his lips
could accomplish was a couple good twitches of want.
Dragon sighed as her father fought against what his
first response would have been. “Why do
you do that?” she asked sitting in one of the chairs in front of his desk and
just because she could and knew it would bug him to no end, she put her boot
clad feet up on the edge of his desk.
She grinned at the withering look he shot her way.
“Do what?”
An eyebrow rose in surprise. “Why do you stomp on your first response to
something funny or even cute or whatever?”
“The happy clause in the curse,” Angel answered in
shocked disbelief she could even ask that question.
Dragon snorted and shook her head. “I would have thought your merger would have
been done by now. Or have you not gotten
the memo about the loophole in your little gypsy-given curse?” When Angel just shook his head in the
negative, she went on. “I found it while
in Europe on a job. I found the family
of gypsies whose ancestors cursed you all those years ago and myself and the Elders
talked at great length about you and the family.”
**Flashback**
“Now,
why do you wish to know the dynamics of the curse cast by the ones who came
before?” an elderly woman whose long,
white hair was braided and hooked over her left shoulder with the tail of it barely
brushing against her waist asked.
Dragon
gave the woman a thorough glance catching every nuance of movement and every
twinkle in her bright hazel eyes while trying to phrase her answer just right. She took a sip of tea then answered the Elder. “My name is Dragon Nikol Aurelius and Angelus
saved from one of his childer when I was very young.” Dragon had the satisfaction of watching the Elder’s
eyes widen almost comically. “I consider
him my father even though I have a biological father already but that is a
private affair between myself and the man who gave me life. I wish to know of a loophole in the curse
cast on my adoptive father all those years ago and to tell you the reason why
he, forgive my crudeness, ate one of your daughters at that time.” By that time the other Elders had made
themselves comfortable to better hear and understand the tale or meaning behind
Dragon’s words.
Another
of the Elders, a man this time, spoke up.
“Why should we believe you when you believe him to be your father? Wouldn’t you just give him the information
then tell the demon where we live and who our families are so he could kill us
all in our sleep since you don’t need an invitation to enter any of our homes?” Dragon raised an eyebrow at the sneering man
but made no move to answer. The Elders
looked around at each other in confusion.
“Why
would I do that since I have no quarrel with any of you or your families. All I came for was information and hopefully
to give you a better understanding of the creature your family created with
that curse. The demon recently has learned
temperance, otherwise he would have let his Childe drain, then leave me for the
wolves to feed on. I was brought into
the demon’s family that night and the bonds of family have only gotten stronger
with the passage of the years since. My
brother and my father are all that is left of the Aurelian Vampire Clan. I am the only, for all intents and purposes,
human clan member.” Dragon took a sip of
tea, glanced at the clock adorning one wall of the Conservatorium which gave
the information she just said to sink into the Elders’ heads. “You see when Angelus stumbled upon the scene
in my backyard in West Virginia in the United States he was looking for his
wayward psychotic childe Penn. They
fought once Angelus stopped Penn from draining me to the point of death or
turning, but just barely. After the
fight, with Angelus the clear winner, Angelus gave me his blood, more blood
than is actually good for mere humans.
It did something, his blood. It
gave me the strength, stamina, eyesight of the vampires’ demons. His blood had called a demon to my body but it
didn’t take over. My demon was absorbed
by my soul and in doing that my body became stronger, my mind became quicker
and able to retain more information than anyone else I’ve ever met.”
“Wait,
why would you tell us this?” another woman Elder asked. Dragon smiled.
“I
was wondering when someone would ask that question.” The smile faded. “I’m telling you this so you can have a
better understanding of what the demon you cursed has gone through.” Dragon reached into a pocket of her coat and
pulled out a bottle of water, cracked the seal and drank a couple mouthfuls
before continuing her tale. “You see
Angelus finding me was a coercion on the part of the Powers That Screw With Us. They wanted a demon who would fight for them
and if the demon had an incentive to fight then they would win many a battle
against the so-called Evil in this world through their chosen champion.” She couldn’t quite keep the sneer off her
face or out of her voice. “Forgive me, I’ve
long since been unforgiving of the Powers That Be,” she said as explanation for her
sneering. “Anyway. I was the bait to bring Angelus over to the
Good Side. Since he found me so late he
stayed with me the rest of that night and took me back to where he was staying
for the day so he wouldn’t fry he had explained to me when I had asked. He explained a lot of things to me that
day. He told me of his past, his family,
his love of drawing. He explained how I would
crave raw meat unless I fed from my family members every so often. He said he would send someone for me to feed
from and to trust them if they explained other things or elaborated on what he
was trying to explain to me. He became,
in a sense, my father after that.”
The
Elders looked shell-shocked as the tale unfolded.
“Years
went by and the family members, Drusilla, Spike, Penn though Spike always
tagged along to make sure Penn did as he was told, even Darla’s other Childe,
Angelus’ replacement or brother,” Dragon shrugged, “depends with who you speak
to on that subject, came and went. Papa
never appeared until my birthday most years, but I didn’t mind. I knew he” here she smiled as she thought
about the other members of her family, “they
loved me. No matter what happened
between any of us, I always knew they loved me.
Just like my human family does, only differently.” She grinned to herself as memories flashed
behind her eyes. Looking at the people
around her grin faded slowly at their disapproval. Disapproval she knew first hand. She got hurt when disapproval showed up in
the faces of her elders. Disapproval she
learned to be wary of.
She
shook her head, once, hard to stop those kinds of thoughts from getting any further
than they already had. She put the water
bottle to her lips, hesitated then took two slow swallows. She continued to speak as she fiddled with
the bottle’s cap.
“See,
Spike liked to tell stories, still does as far as I know. Anyway, he got to talking about Angelus and
their adventures. He spoke of Angelus’
Sire’s taste for watching Angelus feed on the people she got for him to feed
from. She was a right bitch and a
whore. If you believe the stories she
was dying when the Master found her, wandering the streets, dying of syphilis
or something like it. She liked to watch
more than anything, Spike used to say, because she couldn’t do anything
else. Then Angel came around a few days
after mine and Spike’s conversation about that particular year. He said…”
((Flashback))
“Darla
liked to watch more than anything Dragon.
She liked to hand pick my meals then watch from the corner or the couch
or whatever or wherever happened to be handy.
We were in Romania at the time when she brought home a dark haired gypsy
girl. She didn’t look anything special
but then looks can be deceiving. I didn’t
know she was from one of the stronger gypsy lines or that she was supposed to
be off limits due to…certain statuses concerning her. She tasted soooo sweet. I’ve never forgotten that taste, until
you. Until I superseded Penn’s mark I’d
never tasted something as sweet. Angelus
refused to finish what Penn started and after thinking about it I believed that
Darla’s influence had been the key in that gypsy girl’s death. The gypsy were right to curse me this way. If they hadn’t I wouldn’t have you nor would I
have gotten Spike, my William, back into my unlife. Everything I have now I’m thankful for lass,
and it’s all because of you…”
((End
Flashback))
“…And
that was the end of that topic.”
Dragon
looked around the room. She studied the
faces of the Elders who were present and realized they had decided to give her
the information she sought before she had started her story-telling.
The
elderly woman with the white braided hair spoke up. “We will give you the information you seek.” She held up a fragile-looking finger. “But we hold tight to the right to cut out
the loopholes should anything amiss happen with your…father.” The woman smiled at Dragon as Dragon stood up
in shock.
Dragon
swallowed around the lump in her throat several moments before being able to
say anything at all. “I am grateful,
Grandmothers and Grandfathers, for the information entrusted to me by your
Council. I will do all I am able to see
nothing goes awry.”
**End
Flashback**
“…They told me how if the demon and the soul merged
there would be no happiness clause or anything like that. You could love anyone you wish whether it’s
Cordelia or,” here Dragon slid her father a sly look, “Wesley even or is that
especially?” She couldn’t help the grin
that crossed her face at the look Angel shot her way. “Well, I see my work is done here. I think I’ll go bother Gunn into showing me
the weapons or maybe I’ll go see The Host.”
Dragon walked around the desk to give her father a peck on the
cheek. “See you later Papa.” And Dragon was out the door before Angel
could get any words out.
