Title: Fighting For Survival
Author: AddictedtoBuffy
Rating: NC17
Pairing: Angel/Spike/Xander
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.

Chapter Two
In the Magic Box the Scoobies were slowly cleaning up the shop, unaware of the events that had transpired elsewhere. Xander checked his watch for the ninth time since Buffy and Giles mysteriously rushed out of the shop. He wondered when they would get back because he couldn’t wait to be in LA sleeping, or not, with his two lovers. He also wanted to check on Joyce before they left town, to let her know where they were going, and to tell her that if she ever needed anything to just call. She had done so much for them over the years, and they were more then willing to return the favour anytime she needed it.
Spike worked beside him becoming increasingly agitated, he wondered what was taking the Watcher and Slayer so long. Spike had a feeling that whatever secrets they were keeping, the rest of them including Xander and himself, were going to end up being swept up in them.
Dawn who was picking up magic books began to say something, not sure exactly what she wanted to say, but needing a distraction from the thoughts swirling through her head. She wondered how her mum is and why her sister ran after the snake without a word but most of all, she wondered why that snake thing had come up to her and then slithered away without fighting anyone. However, as she is still trying to work out what it is she wanted to say, the bell announced the door opening.
Giles dragged himself into the Magic Box, not knowing how to tell them that their friend and sister was gone, but knowing that he needed to as they didn’t have much time to get out of there. He looked up as seven pairs of eyes stared at him and his eye caught Spike’s. As much as they hated each other in the past, the two of them are going to have to work together to keep everyone else alive.
Spike looked deep into the Watches eyes and somehow, looking at the darkness and despair written within the grey-haired Englishmen’s eyes, Spike knew. He knew that something had happened to the Slayer; she had fought her last fight just like every other Slayer in the history of the world. Spike grabbed Xander and held him to his chest knowing that this was going to be hard on him. It would also be hard on Angel, and Spike realised that for the next little while he is going to have to be the strong one out of their trio while the other two grieved.
Giles sighed again when no one spoke and he noticed a few glances towards the door as they waited for Buffy to appear. ‘How can it be that she will never bounce through that door again?’ Giles thought to himself getting lost in the memories and sadness that threatened to split him open.
“You’d better tell them Rupert. Was it that psycho woman you were researching?” Xander stiffened at the first sentence out of his boyfriend’s mouth. Tell them, Tell us what, he wondered. Then the question Spike asked filtered through Xander’s brain and he was even more confused but some sense was telling him that something bad had happened while they had been cleaning up and worrying about the time.
“What do you have to tell us Giles? Are you leaving?” asked Anya, breaking the silence.
“Where’s Buffy?” Dawn asked wanting her sister here so that they can go see her mum to reassure herself that everything is okay. Giles looked at Dawn and had to swallow against a lump in his throat, this would devastate her, devastate them all but he had to tell them now; time was running out. Now if he could only form the words.
“B…Buffy,” he started and tears fell down his checks. Tara instinctively gathered Dawn to her knowing that something has happened to Buffy. The last time she saw someone this upset was when her mother passed… ‘Oh Goddess,’ Tara thought, ‘Buffy’s gone!’
Giles pulled on all his mental strength to straighten up and say what needed to be said, knowing that nothing would soften the blow. “Buffy’s gone. The mystery woman got her.” Willow heard the words as if from a long way off, not believing her own ears because there was no way that her bestest woman friend was dead. Giles watched Willow physically sag and grab hold of the table for support. He took a much-needed breath and continued.
“There…there was nothing I could do. But this Glory is going to come after us. Now. We need to get out of here. Go! I don’t know where, just somewhere where she can’t find us. Then we can grieve. Right now I need all of you to keep yourselves together. It’s not safe here any longer.” When the last word was spoken Giles felt his energy escape with it and he suddenly found it hard to stay upright. He looked over at Spike, pleading with his eyes, to the only other emotionally strong and life-experienced being in the room.
Spike held the Watchers gaze for a moment answering the question those eyes asked. Someone needed to get them out of there and Giles was fighting not to fall on the ground and sob. ‘Looks like its up to me,’ Spike thought. He would miss Buffy, the Slayer had won his respect over the years but he didn’t love her like everyone else did. He hugged the unnaturally still boy in front of him before addressing the shop at large.
“Okay, you heard the watcher. Anya we are going to need your car, go clear it out and we’ll bring stuff out to it in a minute. Watcher we will need your car too cos ours is already full of stuff.” Giles nodded, relieved that he didn’t have to be the one to push everyone. “Okay Xan pet,” Spike turned Xander around and waved a hand in front of his face to make sure that Xander is there with him. Xander offered a little half smile at his lover knowing that Spike was right; they needed to get going.
“What can I do?” Xander asked softly.
“You and Dawn can start loading the watcher’s diaries and the other rare books into Anya’s car. We can’t leave them here and they should come in handy.” Spike replied.
“Spike,” Dawn spoke for the first time since hearing the news about her sister and all eyes were instantly on her hoping that she wouldn’t break down, because if she did, the rest wouldn’t be able to stay strong.
“Niblet, I need you to stay strong for me, just for a little while, okay bit?” Spike asked staring into her eyes which were bright with unshed tears.
“I can do it Spike but what about Mum, we…we can’t leave her.” Dawn’s hands shook but her voice didn’t as she stared determinedly at Spike hoping he would agree because otherwise she would do it by herself, somehow.
“Don’t worry Dawny I’m sure we will be able to pick her up on the way out of town,” Xander replied to her, “Now why don’t we start collecting those books.” Xander and Dawn moved off and Spike turned to where Willow and Tara were wrapped around each other, both giving and receiving comfort.
“We need magic supplies, weapons, nothing too big though mostly crossbows that can be fired out of a car and anything else you think might come in handy.”
“On it Spike.” Willow replied and they quickly moved off, wanting to get away from this blasted town as soon as possible. Spike turned to Giles.
“Okay watcher, want to tell me what you and the Slayer were hiding? It’s obvious that Glory is after something, the snake found something here but what I can’t tell and now Glory is on her way to collect it. And how do we know her name is Glory?” Spike demanded.
Giles sighed again and then realised that he has been doing that too much lately. He was getting to old for this and sometimes, like now, when he feels so weary he wished he could just go to bed and sleep forever.
“Spike I can’t tell you everything, not yet, it’s too dangerous and I can’t risk anyone overhearing. I can’t risk Glory kidnapping and torturing us all for this information. However there is something you can do for me.” Giles moved over to the register knowing that Spike quietly followed behind. Giles quickly looked around to make sure that all the others were busy and then opened a secret compartment and took out a black and red diary. He handed it to Spike who went to open it. “No, don’t, not here. Hide it on your person. I’m trusting you with this; I don’t know what’s going to happen tonight but if any of you will survive it’s going to be you, Spike. This explains what I know and it is extremely important that those who can help know what is going on. But it is equally important that Glory does not get her hands on this knowledge. The results would be catastrophic. She said that one of the minions had called the mysterious blonde woman Glory.” Spike didn’t need to ask who she was; the grief pouring off Giles was proof enough. He quickly hid the book in his duster and vowed to himself that this Glory will not get her hands on it. He understood why Giles gave it to him instead of keeping it; Giles was in more danger than the rest of them because he was Buffy’s watcher. They busied themselves with gathering the last couple of things needed before they could head off.
“Spike, where are we going?” Giles finally asked, as he was driving one of the cars, he needed to know where to go, even though he wished that there were a way that Spike didn’t have to say this ‘safe house’ out loud.
Spike turned to look at Giles thinking up a way of telling him without anyone overhearing knowing where they are going. And yes, Spike was aware that he was probably being paranoid but he didn’t care, being cautious was not going to hurt. “We are going to see someone who has the maturity of a blueberry scone,” he answered, remembering that after meeting Wesley, Xander told him what Giles had said at some point in the past.
Giles felt his lips upturn as if they were trying to smile on their own at that reminder. So they are going to Wesley and Wesley was with Angel who was probably whom Spike thought could help them the most, hopefully he had made up with his Sire. Giles didn’t want him and the others caught in that type of fight.
“All done,” Anya announced walking over to the two of them. “Who am I taking and where are we going?”
“Take Dawn and Tara. Go now,” Giles answered before Spike could. Spike looked at the watcher wondering why he wanted Dawn and Tara away first but knowing better than to question Rupert’s decision out loud. Instead Spike took his phone out of his pocket and handed it to Anya.
“When you are out on the highway heading south press speed dial one, the person on the other end will tell you where to go.” Spike answered and moved off to talk to Xander. They needed to hurry.

Xander, Spike, Giles and Willow watched Anya, Tara and Dawn drive away. ‘Okay the first car is off and there is no sign of Glory, now the other two cars just need to get out of here as well,’ thought Xander. Giles locked the Magic Box door even though it was likely that Glory’s minions would break it down and ransack the place. Willow moved to Giles car while Xander got into the passenger seat of his. Usually he hated it when Spike drove but tonight Spike was more likely to lose a tail than he would be, and out of the three cars theirs was the one most likely to be tracked as they have to go past the hospital. Giles turned to climb into his car when,
“STOP THEM!!!!”
As one they turned, and watched as surrounded by a multitude of scaly minions, was one very annoyed Glory moved towards them. Giles whipped around and looked at Willow who was half in his car, and at Xander and Spike fighting to get out of their seats and then at himself standing in the middle of the pathway. It took a second for him to make up his mind and then he quickly pulled Willow from his car and pushed her towards the back seat of Xanders.
“Get in!”
“But Giles..?” Willow protested, scared about what he was about to do, they needed to face that bitch together, make her hurt like she deserved after killing one of them. Willow was sure she has a spell or two that could work.
“GET! IN!” Giles stated firmly as he ripped open the door and pushed her in. This time there was no room for argument in his voice. “Spike, go, get them out of here” he commanded and Spike found himself complying, turning the key in the ignition while admiring the balls on the old watcher.
Meanwhile Giles grabbed a sword out of his car and moved into the middle of the road ready to face Glory. He was well aware of the fact that he hadn’t a chance in hell but that didn’t matter as long as he bought enough time for the others to escape. He heard the screech of tires as the four-wheel-drive took off and he was glad that Spike had enough sense to get the others out of there. That when he read what was in his pocket, they would know why Giles was doing this and why he couldn’t let her torture it out of him. He stood proud in the middle of the street watching the minions run towards him and the bitch that snapped his Slayer’s neck like kindling near the rear of the group.
*****
Spike broke all the speed limits attempting to get away before the other two in the car saw Rupert’s death. He knew that tears were streaming down their faces like they were down his. Willow was turned around with her face plastered against the back window and Xander was turned round in his seat trying to see his mentor, his father figure giving his life for theirs. In the rear-view mirror Spike could see the minions reach Giles and him take down four before the sword was turned around and plunged into his chest just as Glory reached him. Spike forced his eyes on the road knowing that without a doubt Giles plunged the sword through his own heart to preserve whatever secrets were in the book hidden within his duster. The car was silent except for Willows’ gut wrenching sobs, and Spike hoped that they were going to live through the night as they turned the corner leaving the Magic Box and the scene in front of it behind.
