Xander distractedly dodged the attack of the SIT in front of him. She was much faster, but he had years of experience and she was predictable.
“I thought you were human!” The teen whined; Xander chuckled and finally brought up a padded palm to catch her fist. She stopped her flurry of punches.
“I am, but I've spent years fighting people stronger and faster than me. You're new at this; give it a couple more months and you'll be able to knock me on my ass every time. Don't worry.” The teen smiled and jogged back to her training group.
“Alright, we'll be working on fighting as a group now. Rosewood has agreed to join us in this activity and our sister school the Watcher Academy will also be working with us.” Buffy's voice carried over the room easily. Dawn and Andrew lead the Rosewood witches as well as the Watchers in. “We'll be dividing into groups, each group will have at least one witch, one Slayer, and one Watcher.” Buffy looked out over the group and smiled. “Now, find your group. There can't be any more than four in a group.”
Xander had to hold back a laugh at watching the teens scamper and try to find or form a group.
“Oh, I hope this works. I know that assigned groups would have been a bad idea, but this doesn't seem much better.” Willow's voice was filled with worry, but the face that she showed to the students was completely calm.
“Relax Will, if necessary we can always switch them around.”
“Did I miss the party?” Every Slayer in the room froze, except for Buffy.
“Of course not, what kind of party would it be without you, Fangless?” The smile that came to Xander's face took the sting out of the old nickname.
“Not so fangless anymore, Whelp. Kick your sorry ass without any trouble, I can.” Several of the SITs gasped and a few took steps forward. “Oi, Slayer. I don't think that your brood likes me much.”
“Relax girls, Spike is a friend. He wouldn't hurt Xander...much.”
“But, he's a vampire!” One SIT yelled, the witches and Watchers, now informed, began to voice their own protests.
“Woah, woah guys.” Xander held up his hands. “Not only does Spike have a soul, but he saved the world's proverbial ass almost single-handedly two years ago. Show some respect.” Then under his breath, “Can't believe that I'm, defending Bleach Boy.”
There was an uncomfortable pause, then one Watcher asked. “Why do you get six people when we can only have four?” The group standing together at the front of the room consisted of Buffy, Spike, Willow, Xander, Andrew, and Dawn.
“You have to learn how to work in a group first. The bigger the group, the harder it is to do it right. Now, before we teach you, we're going to show you. You might want to back up.” Then she turned and spoke to the wall behind them. “Let them out, Wood.” The entire wall dropped and twenty vampires charged out of the containment room.
Xander shook the dust out of his hair, and looked up from his kneeling position. He still hadn't moved his hand from where the stake he held had connected with the vampire's heart, and Spike's stake. The two looked at their touching stakes.
“Well, that's a bit of overkill.” Xander met Spike's eyes and they both smiled. “You know, I could have handled it.” Spike helped Xander to his feet.
“So I see, but ya never know with humans, fragile lot, you are.”
“Your concern is duly noted...Did we just have a conversation that didn't involve insults?” They both realized at the same moment that their hands were still clasped and jerked apart.
“Called you fragile.”
“Oh, well. At least I don't...I got nothing.” They walked out of the training hall as Buffy started in on the group training.
“Leaving the chits to take care of the kids?” Spike gestured behind them.
“Teaching and me? Not so much with the meshing. It's really best left to them. I do the clean up and repair afterward.” Xander led them toward the staff kitchen, needing a snack after the workout. “So how was the trip? And how is Deadboy Sr. doing? Andrew said that he didn't want to let you out of L.A. Are the American SITs too much for brood boy?”
“Trip was fine, the sun-proof glass did it's job. The Poof, he's...” Spike sent a sideways look at Xander. “He's lonely.” The vampire watched as understanding dawned on the human's face.
“Oh...oh. You and he...oh.” The pair reached the kitchen and Xander sat heavily on one of the chairs. His mind was sent back to where it had been when he was distracted during his fight with the
SIT. Giles is gay, or at least bi. I'm gonna go with bi 'cause of Ms. Calender and that one woman, Olivia was it? Angel is gay, no bi, he definitely did the happy with Buffy. Ethan Rayne is gay, not terribly surprising. Andrew is gay, again with the no surprise. Spike bi. Willow gay. “Isn't anyone I know straight?” Xander surprised himself with the outburst.
“Doubt it. I know the two older Slayers had some fun before the ex-evil one was evil. Maybe the Bit.” Spike opened the fridge and began looking for something to eat.
“Bottom drawer. It's got HIV, but its human. Didn't have to pay much since they chuck it anyway.” Xander offered; Spike opened the indicated drawer. He stood up, blood in hand and headed toward
the microwave. “Dawn is bi. After Willow broke up with Kennedy, she asked Dawn out; Kennedy not Willow. Dawn dumped Kennedy not long after that, but she's batting for both teams now.” The microwave dinged; and Spike joined Xander at the table. He brought the man a box of goldfish crackers that he found also, as Xander seemed to have forgotten that he was hungry.
“What about you, mate? Ever take a swing for the other team?”
What about me? Am I bi, I know I'm not gay, not when Pamela Anderson's bobbies are so enticing. Did I just think the word 'boobies'? Next thing you know I'll be thinking 'weewee' and how Spike's is...so not going there. “No, never.” Spike's gaze traveled up Xander's body; he shivered under the perusal. Spike returned his attention to his meal, but not before he let out a soft...
“Pity.” The vampire fought back a smirk as Xander swallowed nervously.
“Did you know that Giles is bi? Andrew is dating his ex-boyfriend slash ex-enemy slash who knows what.” Xander surprised himself by not looking away as Spike vamped and drank his blood.
“That Rayne bloke?” Spike licked the cup out as best he could and noted the boy's nonchalance with his eating habits. That small act made him feel truly welcome and closer to the boy then he had before, not that that was a terribly hard feat.
“How did you know?” The human's surprise made Spike raise an eyebrow.
“You don't put that much work and thought into a job if the victim doesn't mean anything to ya.” He made to stand and rinse out his cup, but Xander was already there. Spike noticed the tension
in the Scooby and, not for the first time, wondered what was running through the boy's, no, man's head. “Need some time alone, mate? Time to think, maybe work things out?”
“No. Thanks, but no. I'd actually rather not be alone with my thoughts right now.” Xander put the now clean mug away and turned back to Spike. “There's a pool table downstairs, wanna play?”
Spike knew what the man meant, but the human was obviously having problems with his sexual identity and the vampire couldn't help but take advantage, just a little. “Oh, I wanna play. Haven't hit any balls with my stick in a bit. Don't much appreciate the felt burn though.” Spike ignored Xander's frozen state and headed out of the room. He innocently, or as innocently as a semi-evil vampire could, looked back. “C'mon Harris, those balls aren't going to sink themselves.” It took a minute for Xander to be sure there wasn't any innuendo in that statement. This made him wonder if any had been intended in the first one.
“Yeah, I mean no, I mean...” Xander paused looking for a way to phrase it without sounding dirty. Let's start a game.”
“You're going to miss mate. You're holding the cue all wrong.”
“I've always held it like this.” Xander struck the cue ball, and missed his shot.
“Now I know why you're always so frustrated.” The sentence made Xander pause. Had it been meant dirty or did Spike mean his frustration with always losing? “Here, let me show you.” Spike put down his own cue and returned the ball to its original position. He then stepped just behind Xander. “Hold it like you were.” Xander bent over the table and took aim; he felt Spike move closer. He suddenly had the urge to move back slightly, to force their bodies to touch, but Spike beat him to it. The vampire leaned over him, their upper bodies now touching. “Shift your grip just like this.” Spike's breath traveled across Xander's ear, and the blond rearranged his fingers. He was tempted to stay there while the human took the shot, but he didn't want the felt torn. Baking up, Spike instructed Xander to take his shot. The cue ball hit the two ball head on, sending it into the pocket.
“Wow, thanks.”
“Don't mention it. You ever need me to show you anything else just ask.” Spike watched Xander's ass as the man bent to take another shot. After Xander stood, Spike finally noticed that something was different, and when he realized what it was, he couldn't believe that he had missed it. “How's that eye treating you? Glass?”
“No, Willow made it. It's just like a normal eye apart from being removable, and being made by magic.” Xander missed his next shot, but Spike didn't approach the table.
“So, what can it do? Any x-ray vision going on, there?”
Spike fought down a shiver as Xander looked him up and down.
“Nope. Something about the complexities of turning something like that on and off. All it does is show me auras. Not like Willow sees them, I can't see emotions, but...” He stepped closer to
Spike and ran his hand across the air just inches away from Spike's torso, moving it slowly in a circle. “I can see you're a demon and...I can see your soul.” The vampire closed his eyes,
wishing that he could feel the caress of Xander's hand. “There's something else though, something extra.” Spike opened his eyes and looked down at Xander's hand, now resting in the air above the
center of his chest. “It's where the amulet was. I think...I think that it means you're a Champion.”
“Oh, that's just what I need, another link to Peaches.”
His words were harsh, but the tone was teasing and Spike felt the warm fuzzies at being acknowledged as a Champion.
“Are you two close? I mean besides the...closeness.”
Xander shifted his weight back and forth. Spike resumed the game.
“We're...Angel and I have never been able to make it work, not for long at least. It's like somethin's missing from the equation. We might want more, and we love each other, but our personalities are
too volatile and we're to different and too similar at the same time, if that makes sense.” Spike finished his set of balls and then sunk the 8. “Don't suppose we bet anything?”
“How about I find you a drink?"
“JD?”
“I might have some.” Spike threw an arm over Xander's shoulder.
“I could get used to this.”
Some cliched dark alley somewhere.
“They are a formidable foe. We will have trouble fighting them as a group."
“That is why we are waiting for the elder Slayer, and the witch to leave.”
“What of the souled vampire? His arrival was unexpected.”
“Send someone to attack his lover, he will rush back to help him.”
“And when they are gone?”
“We see if these new Slayers are as talented as their predecessors."
Back to our heroes.
Andrew's hand froze on the door to Ethan's bedroom. There were voices coming from inside. Slowly, he opened the door, afraid of what he would find. He half expected, feared, to find his lover naked on the bed with another man. He was partially right. Ethan stood beside his bed, completely nude, but it was what he saw on the other side of the bed that stopped him. Giles,a fully dressed, but an obviously hard Giles looked him directly in the eye when Andrew's gaze finally reached his face.
“I'll, I'll just go.” He should have known better than to get attached to someone, who after all, would want him? Just before he had the door fully closed, a voice reached his ears.
“Come in, Andrew.” If the blond had been able to see his boyfriend, he would have seen the shiver travel through Ethan's body. He had never heard Giles use this tone before, but he had heard one
like it at the Council Headquarters once. Giles had been angered by a particularly pompous egotist who's incompetence had gotten two people seriously injured. Xander had murmured something then, a name that made everyone who heard him pause, 'Ripper' he'd said. Hesitantly, he entered the room. “Shut the door.” Another hesitation, than slowly, he shut the door behind him.
