“ Buffy!”
Buffy rolled away from the insistent little voice at her ear. “ Buuuffyyyy…” the voice singsonged.
“ Go ’way,” she mumbled, pulling the quilt tighter around herself. Someone shook her shoulder. “Hey!” Buffy rolled towards the shaker and lashed out with a fist. She opened her eyes in time to see Willow skip away hurriedly.
“ Gee, sorry, Will,” Buffy apologised. She sat up and rubbed her eyes.
“ That’s okay,” the witch replied. “ It’s time to get up is all.” She sat on the bed. “And also, how come you’re here? Weren’t you gonna spend the night with Riley?”
The events of the previous evening crashed down on Buffy again. Her face fell and a lump rose up in her throat.
“ Will…”
“ What is it?” Willow asked anxiously.
Buffy gulped. “ Something awful happened last night,” she managed.
“ Oh no!” Willow’s hand flew to her mouth. “ Is it Riley? Did he get hurt?”
“ Riley’s fine,” Buffy answered. She clenched her hands in the quilt. “ It’s just…” She looked up at Willow. “ Giles and I had a fight.”
“ Oh,” Willow replied. “ What – what happened?”
“ Riley and I were making out on Giles’ couch and he walked in,” Buffy said tremulously. “ Will, he was so mad…” She swallowed. “ He threw us out.”
“ Giles threw you out?!” Willow repeated in disbelief. Buffy nodded miserably.
“ Later I went round to apologise,” she went on, “ and he was – drunk, and we argued, and then he said…” She took a deep breath. “Willow, he said he loved me.”
“ Well, sure he loves you!” Willow replied. “ I mean, in a Watcher, Slayer, sorta way…”
Buffy gave her head a tiny shake. Willow’s eyes went as wide as saucers.
“ Oh.”
“ Yeah.” Buffy sighed. “ Willow, what am I gonna do?”
“ Well… how do you feel about it?” Willow asked. “ Like, you either love Giles back or you don’t, right?”
“ I don’t know,” Buffy answered. “ Sure I care about Giles, but he’s like my…”
She was about to say ‘father’, but stopped when she realised that it didn’t really fit. She’d never sassed or teased or disobeyed her father like she did Giles. ‘Mentor’ and ‘teacher’ implied authority and a professional distance that had never been there, even at the beginning of their relationship. ‘Friend’? She hadn’t been much of a friend to Giles lately. “ I don’t know what he’s like.”
“ A guy?” Willow prompted.
Buffy shrugged.
“ I guess,” she admitted.
“ A handsome, charming, sexy, British guy?” Willow continued with a grin.
Buffy’s face scrunched instinctively. “ Eww, Willow!” She stared at her friend in disbelief. “What’s with all the Giles-lust?”
“ What’s with the eww?” Willow replied, her expression changing to one of annoyance. “ Every time anyone says anything flattering about him, you’re all…” She fluttered her hands and imitated Buffy’s disgusted expression. “C’mon, Buffy, what’s so wrong with Giles?”
Buffy floundered. “ I … I …” She hit on something. “ He’s old. He’s like –”
“ Not even fifty,” Willow interrupted. “ And anyway, I thought you liked George Clooney.”
“ That’s totally different,” Buffy protested. “ Giles isn’t… sexy.”
“ You wouldn’t say that if you’d heard him singing,” Willow replied. She got a dreamy look on her face. “ He could sing the alphabet and he’d still make you go all melty.” She looked at Buffy. “ I had such a huge crush on him in high school. If I’d heard him sing back then, I probably would’ve exploded.”
“ Really?” Buffy asked uncertainly. She grew thoughtful. “ I guess I never thought about Giles in that way.”
“ And now?” Willow prodded.
“ I guess Giles has his good points,” Buffy admitted slowly. “ He’s smart, and gentle, and caring… and – I guess he’s in good shape…”
“ Don’t forget ready to die for you,” Willow put in.
Buffy gave a brief smile. “ There’s always that.”
“ So?” Willow asked. “ What’re you gonna do?”
Buffy reflected for a few minutes. Willow watched her face intently, but could get no clue as to what her friend was thinking. Finally, Buffy came to a decision.
“ What can I do?” she replied with a shrug. “ I love Riley.” She threw off the covers and went to get dressed, and Willow realised the conversation was over.
Buffy doodled idly on her notebook. Usually she found it easy to pay attention in Dr. Lawrence’s lectures – he was, to put it mildly, a bit batty, and had a way of getting laughs from his students while at the same time getting them to learn. But this morning she had other things on her mind.
She hadn’t been entirely honest with Willow earlier. She *had* thought about Giles before, as a guy. The first time was when she’d walked in on Giles and Jenny kissing in the library. The way Giles had been kissing her…holding her… it had done something funny to Buffy’s insides. She’d spent their next training session staring at his lips, wondering what they felt like. Wondering if Giles was a good kisser. Wondering if he and Jenny had had sex. A thought that had made her feel very uneasy, since it made her realise that Giles was just like any other guy, with a guy’s – responses to certain things. Such as close physical contact with a blonde in tight tops and lycra pants. She’d worn long T-shirts to training for a week. But he never said anything – never gave any sign that he was relieved or disappointed, so Buffy went back to her old training gear.
She hadn’t thought of him as a guy again until she overheard her mother’s thoughts about him. She shuddered to herself, and was rewarded with a mental image of Willow’s annoyed face. //Hey, that had nothing to do with Giles, okay? I just don’t wanna think about my mom having sex! Satisfied? Mom sure was - // Buffy closed her eyes and took some deep breaths. //Eww, I just grossed myself out.// Stimindmind-bending concept of her mother having sex aside, she had been morbidly fascinated by the details. Twice. That meant Giles had managed to get it up twice. Or had managed to stay hard long enough to... do her mother again. Buffy shook herself to get rid of the mental images as the students around her got up. The lecture was over. Buffy wandered out after them, heading down the corridor in a daze.
Her thoughts turned to the most recent moment when she’d thought of Giles as a guy – walking into his apartment and finding Olivia there. Seeing Giles kiss Jenny and her mother was one thing – seeing Giles in his robe with a woman wearing nothing but one of his shirts was another. That was a perfectly good reason for her to freak out, right? Yeah. She’d been embarrassed, that was all. Not angry and definitely not jealous. And that day had nothing to do with the tiny strand of happiness wound in amongst the sadness and sympathy for Giles she’d felt when she found out Olivia wasn’t coming back.
Buffy paused by a window and gazed out across the courtyard. She was no closer to sorting out her feelings about Giles. She knew she DID love him, the way she loved Willow and Xander… but it wasn’t anything more. Was it? Random thoughts began to crowd into her mind. //Olivia didn’t come half-way round the world for nothing…Faith and Willow saw something in him… I don’t feel that way, do I? …a guy who can manage it twice that fast must have a pretty big appetite, if ya know what I mean… what does he see in me? …a father’s love… we’re too different… he’s not my type… tall, dark and older isn’t my type…// Buffy took a deep breath and let it out slowly. //Too old. Giles is too old.// She ignored the little voice insisting that Angel was over two centuries older than her. //That’s different. Angel only looked like he was -//
“ Hey there.”
Buffy jumped and turned around.
“ Riley!” She pushed a strand of hair back behind her ear, suddenly feeling strangely guilty. A blush crept up her neck, and she prayed that he didn’t notice. Riley put his arms around her and kissed her lightly on the lips. Buffy relaxed under his touch. //This whole thing is pointless. I don’t wanna hurt Giles, but I can’t help the way I feel. I love Riley. I’m in love with Riley.// She kissed him back, to prove it, and he responded eagerly.
“ Where’d you go?” Riley asked when she finished kissing him. “ I didn’t have to be anywhere till eleven this morning. I had plans for us.”
“ Oh.” Buffy suddenly felt uncomfortable. “ I, I went to see Giles. To apologise.”
“ Oh right,” Riley replied disinterestedly. “ What was his problem, anyway?”
“ He said he was in love with me.”
Riley pulled away as if he’d been burned. “ What?!”
Buffy looked up at him, suddenly nervous. He was staring at her with a look of disbelief and horror plastered on his face. She swallowed.
“ He – he said he was in love with me.”
“ Oh man.” Riley turned and paced back and forth agitatedly. “ Oh man, that’s just sick.” He looked at her. “ He must be at least fifty!”
“ I – I know,” Buffy replied awkwardly.
Riley still couldn’t get over it. “ You could be his daughter!” he went on.
“ I know,” Buffy replied, a dangerous edge to her voice.
Riley didn’t notice the warning signs. “ Who knows how long he’s been slobbering over you, getting off on training with you –”
“ That’s enough!” Buffy snapped. Riley stared at her in surprise. Buffy took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down. “ It’s not like that.” Riley had the grace to look ashamed of himself. “ Riley, if you’d seen him… if you’d seen the way he looked when he told me… I thought he was gonna cry.” She wrapped her arms around herself. “ He’s one of the people I care about the most, and – and I’m gonna have to break his heart.” Riley took her in his arms. Buffy laid her head against his chest. Riley dropped a light kiss on her head.
“ Well, for what it’s worth, I still think he’s a pervert,” he murmured. He felt Buffy tense, and quickly amended, “ but I can keep it to myself.” Buffy relaxed. Riley rubbed her back. “ You got somewhere to be?”
Buffy mumbled something in the negative.
“ Wanna go someplace and do something?” Riley asked. “ Or do you wanna wait till tonight? It’s one of the guys’ birthdays, and the whole squad is going out.”
“ Now sounds good,” Buffy replied. She pulled away and looked up at him. “ I’ll pass on tonight. I need to think about what I’m gonna say to Giles.”
A black look flickered across Riley’s face. It was gone as quickly as it had arrived, and Buffy decided she had imagined it.
“ Okay,” he said. He smiled down at her. “ How about we get some ice-cream, sit in the grounds, and stop worrying about Giles, huh?”
“ Okay,” Buffy replied. She let Riley take her arm, and lead her down the corridor.
Giles had spent most of the day in bed with the curtains drawn. This was due in part to a horrific hangover – after Buffy’d left, he’d worked his way through nearly a whole bottle of scotch before finally staggering upstairs. Long after he’d recovered enough to get up, however, he’d stayed under the covers out of sheer depression. Buffy knew. And she’d reacted exactly as she always did in his ‘Worst Case Scenario’ of ‘I Finally Tell Buffy How I Feel’. His only hope was that she’d blame the alcohol for what he’d said, but he knew it was unlikely. He had been too coherent when they had argued, drunk but not drunk enough. He’d be lucky if she ever came to see him again, and even if she did, things would never be the same. And the mess he found himself in was entirely his own fault.
Giles rolled over and looked at his alarm clock. It was twenty-five past six. He cursed at himself in disgust and sat up. A whole day wasted through wallowing in useless self-pity. He got out of bed and stalked to the bathroom, giving himself a good talking to under his breath.
//You’ve really done it this time, you bloody idiot. You could’ve just glared at them. You could’ve just rolled your eyes, or told them to cool down, or shaken your head in gentle good humour and gone upstairs and let them get on with it. But no, YOU had to act like some cuckolded husband, and then you had to go and get good and drunk, didn’t you? You should’ve known Buffy would come over, lookior aor an explanation. Well, now she has one, and you’ve probably ruined whatever relationship was left between you.// Giles savagely brushed his teeth. He hadn’t felt this way in twenty-five years… restless and filled with impotent rage. He gazed at his reflection in the mirror and scowled, before returning to his bedroom. He pulled on a clean white T-shirt and a pair of blue jeans. His stomach growled insistently, reminding him that he hadn’t eaten all day. Giles went downstairs and set about frying some eggs and bacon. The angry sizzle of the oil fit his mood perfectly. As he ate his meal, the silence in the apartment stretched and more and more uncomfortable thoughts crowded in. Finally Giles could stand it no longer. He pushed his empty plate away and stood up.
“ I’m going out,” he said aloud.
He went upstairs and opened his wardrobe, pushing through the suits and ropey sweaters, until he found what he was looking for.
The Jacket. So important it merited capital letters, The Jacket was the first leather jacket Giles had ever owned. Under the scent of leather was the smell of old smoke, the essence of magic, and just the faintest trace of cannabis. He picked it up and caressed the soft material, then put it on. He looked at himself in the mirror. Satisfied with his appearance, Giles turned and headed downstairs. He picked up his keys and went outside.
He decided not to take the car, but paused to collect a couple of stakes from the glove compartment, tucking them into his inside pocket. One could never be too careful, especially in Sunnydale. That done, Giles made his way down the street and into town. He veered away from the usual Scooby Gang haunts, going towards the cinema. The sound of live music drew his attention to a bar at the end of the road, and he headed towards it. The place looked rough. Good. //Just let someone try something.// Giles pushed open the door and stepped inside.
Buffy stalked past a crypt. She halted, retraced her steps, and pulled out a stake. Stealthily, she crept up to the couple behind the crypt. She reached out and grabbed the guy by the shoulder, ready to bury the stake in his unbeating heart –
“ Xander!” Buffy exclaimed.
“ Hey Buff,” Xander replied sheepishly.
“ What the hell are you doing out here?” Buffy asked. She looked at his flushed face, and then at Anya, who gave a nervous smile and straightened her blouse. “ I almost staked you! I thought you were a vampire feeding off her!”
“ Danger makes sex more exciting,” Anya replied cheerfully. “ And everyone knows the graveyards in Sunnydale are the most dangerous places to be around here.”
Buffy stared at her in disbelief. “ Sex in a graveyard? *Exciting?*” she asked.
Anya pouted. “ Well, what would you call it?”
“ Try eww,” Buffy replied. She looked at Xander. “ And try unbelievably dumb! Anything could’ve happened.”
“ Hey, I knew all the time that you’d be along,” Xander replied. Anya hit him on the arm. “ Ow!” Xander stared at his girlfriend in wounded surprise. “ What was that for?”
“ You want your friends to watch us?!” Anya asked in angry disbelief.
“ No!” Xander answered quickly. “ No, of course not.”
“ What, so now you’re ashamed of me?” Anya huffed.
“ No –” Xander paused, took a deep breath, and let it out slowly. “ Ahn, it was a joke.”
“ Oh,” Anya replied. She brightened up. “ I get jokes.” She took Xander’s arm. Buffy grinned.
“ C’mon, you two lovebirds,” she said. “ I’ll walk you guys home.”
They headed out of the graveyard and turned in the direction of Xander’s basement.
“ So, uh…” Xander hesitated, then decided to go ahead. “ Willow told me you and the G-man had a fight.”
Buffy shot him a startled look. “ What exactly did she tell you?” she asked warily.
“ Not much,” Xander replied. “ Just that things between you and Giles are kinda rough. I was just wondering if you patched things up yet, ’cos if not, um, the next Scooby meeting’s gonna be kinda awkward.”
“ It’s a bit more complicated than that,” Buffy said wearily. “ Giles and I had an argument, and in the middle of it, he sorta blurted out that he’s in love with me.” She saw Xander grimace, and groaned. “ Don’t say it, Xander. Please, I’ve already got Riley calling Giles a pervert, not you too!”
“ Pervert?” Xander asked hotly. “ That’s a little harsh, isn’t it? I mean it’s not like Giles is up on ladders peering through your bedroom window or anything.” He looked at Buffy anxiously. “ Is he?”
Buffy gagged. “ No.”
“ Are you going to have sex with Giles now?” Anya asked. “ Older men can often be more experienced and therefore better lovers.” Blithely ignoring the looks she was getting, she continued on. “ Older men sometimes have erection problems of course, but I don’t think Giles has. After all, he had that woman over to stay. So the only real danger is if he dumps you for someone younger.”
“ Giles wouldn’t do that!” Buffy interrupted fiercely. The couple stared at her, and she felt the colour rising in her cheeks. “ Well, he wouldn’t!” she said defensively. “Besides… I’m in love with Riley.”
“ That soldier?” Anya asked, raising an eyebrow.
“ Yes, that soldier,” Buffy answered. “ My boyfriend. Riley. Who I’m in love with.”
“ If you say so,” Anya replied innocently.
“ Good,” Buffy said. “ Because I do. I do say so. I, I care about Giles – I care about Giles a lot, but I’m not in love with him, because you can’t be in love with two people at once and…” She saw the couple looking at her with quizzical expressions. “ What? I don’t have to prove anything to you!”
Xander grinned. “ Calm down, Buffster,” he laughed. “ If you say you’re in love with Riley, we believe you. You’re a big girl, you can see what you want.” He grew serious. “ Just – just let the G-man down gently, okay?” He shifted uncomfortably. “The poor guy’s been through enough.”
Buffy looked away. “ Yeah,” she murmured softly. The memory of Giles slumped in his armchair, the look on his face as he confessed his secret to her, swam before her eyes. Something tugged at her heart as she imagined how he must feel, how much worse he would feel when she told him she was sorry, but she loved Riley. Tears stung her eyes and a lump rose up in her throat. //Why must I always hurt him?//
“ Buffy?” Xander called her a second time.
“ Huh?” Buffy roused herself, and realised they were standing outside Xander’s house. “ Oh.” She blinked and looked at Xander in confusion. “ Huh?”
“You kinda zoned out there,” Xander observed. “ You okay?”
“ Yeah,” Buffy replied. She swallowed. “ Um, I’ll see you guys tomorrow. I’m gonna take one more pass and call it a night.”
“ See ya, Buff,” Xander called as the Slayer headed off into the night. Anya laid her head on his shoulder. Xander heaved a sigh.
“ Man, I’m so not looking forward to the next couple of weeks,” he remarked sadly. “Giles and Buffy… they’ve done some pretty awful stuff to each other, and they always came through it, but I don’t think they can work this out.”
“ It’ll be okay,” Anya murmured, tracing circles on his chest. She smiled. “ Like you said, Buffy’s a big girl. She can see what she wants.”
Six pints and an equal number of whiskey chasers had done little to improve Giles’ mood. The live band were playing a mixture of hard rock and metal songs, gleefully exposing the notion of music soothing the savage beast as a big fat lie. He emd hid his glass and called one of the bar staff over.
“ Another pint, mate.”
“ I need to see some ID.”
Giles stared at the gawky trainee in disbelief. “ Do I look like I’m underage? I’ve been in here all night!”
“ I need to see some ID,” the trainee repeated.
Giles growled softly and searched through his wallet as a group of rowdy young men entered the bar. “ There.” He slammed down his driver’s licence. The trainee looked at it.
“ This isn’t you.”
“ It IS me,” Giles replied with forced patience. “ It’s me when I was younger.” The trainee mouthed something to himself as he stared down at the driver’s licence. “It’ll click in a minute,” Giles remarked. “ Don’t strain yourself, I can wait all night.”
“ I, I’ll have to ask my boss,” the trainee said at last.
“ Yes, do that!” Giles called irritably as he scuttled off. The owner of the pub arrived a moment
later.
“ Sorry about him,” he said apologetically. “ I gotta employ him, he’s my idiot nephew.” He handed Giles’ driver’s licence back to him. “ What’ll it be?”
“ A pint, please, mate,” Giles replied, biting off every word. The owner accepted his money and turned to the tab.
Giles’ world blurred suddenly as someone pulled his spectacles off his face.
“ What –”
“ I can never hit a guy with glasses,” Riley smirked. A second later his fist connected with Giles’ nose. The impact knocked him off his barstool. Giles winced as his head hit the floor. Slowly, he got to his feet. Riley was standing with his back to him, laughing with one of his buddies. Giles tapped him on the shoulder. Riley turned and Giles punched him hard in the jaw, spinning him around. The soldier recovered and threw another punch. Giles grabbed his arm, pulled Riley forward, and hit him in the stomach. Riley grabbed hold of Giles’ T-shirt and the pair stumbled backwards into a table, spilling beer and vodka all over the floor.
“ Hey, hey, hey!” the bartender yelled. “ No fighting in my bar!”
“ Can it, Shorty,” Forrest growled. He turned back to the fight and started cheering Riley on.
“ Great movie,” Tara remarked.
“ Yeah,” Willow agreed, laying her head against her girlfriend’s shoulder as the pair strolled down the street.
“ I sti-still think we should get a cab,” Tara declared. “ I, I mean, this IS Sunnydale…”
“ Hey, we’re a couple a’ badass witches,” Willow replied with a grin. “ Nothing’s gonna tangle with us…”
She trailed off as they got closer to the bar at the end of the street. Several raised voices could be heard, chanting something.
“ What the –” Willow moved out of Tara’s embrace and headed towards the noise. “Sounds like they’re saying ‘Riley!’”
She broke into a run, Tara close behind her. As they drew closer, they made out, under the voices, the sounds of furniture breaking. Willow yanked the door open and pushed her way through the crowd. Riley and another man had each other by the shoulders, each trying to shove the other over. They pulled each other around in a half-circle. The other man broke free and brought the point of his elbow down on Riley’s back. Willow’s eyes widened in disbelief when she saw the other man’s face.
“ What’s happening?” Tara asked as Willow dashed back out onto the street.
“ We got trouble,” Willow replied. She ran up the street.
Buffy had one more cemetery to hit before she went home. It was on the other side of town. There hadn’t been much vampire activity that night, and she was glad – she was too busy thinking about Giles to focus properly on her slaying. She was walking along, deep in thought, when a small hurricane crashed into her.
“ Buffy, thank God!”
“ Will!” Buffy frowned at the flustered redhead. “ What’s up
“ Riley… Giles… ” The witch hopped agitatedly from foot to foot. “ Come quick, they’re gonna kill each other!”
Before Buffy could utter a “huh?” Willow grabbed her arm and dragged her down the street.
“ What’s this all about?” Buffy asked. Willow pulled her round the corner. There was a sudden crash. Buffy could only stare in astonishment as Giles and Riley smashed through the front window of a bar in front of her. The two men rolled on the glass-covered ground for a few seconds before Giles threw Riley off. Riley was faster to his feet. He reeled back and punched Giles in the face. Giles gave an angry roar and retaliated with a roundhouse kick, planting his shin across Riley’s stomach. The soldier flew backwards, folding like a deckchair, and collapsed on the ground. Buffy ran towards him.
“ Riley!”
She cradled the groaning boy’s head in her arms.
“ It hurts,” he moaned.
Buffy pushed Riley’s hair back from his forehead. His eye was puffy and there were scratches on his face from the glass. He coughed weakly.
Buffy turned sharply and glared at her Watcher. He stared back at her with cold, green eyes. He was bent over slightly, breathing hard, and there was blood splattered all over his white T-shirt. Buffy stalked up to him and slapped him so hard he stumbled.
“ You fucker!” He recovered his footing and glared at her. “ What the hell is wrong with you?”
“ He started it!” Giles blurted out.
Buffy shook her head slowly.
“ Oh, you SO did not say that.”
“ He took my glasses!” Giles replied indignantly, pointing at Riley. “ And, and then he hit me.”
Buffy caught the smell of whiskey and beer on his breath and clothes and her face crumpled in disgust. “You’re drunk.”
Giles’ scowl deepened. He turned slightly and spat a gob of blood and phlegm onto the ground. Buffy purposely turned her back on him and focussed her attention on Riley.
“ Ow…” He winced as she helped him up. “ Did you see what he did?”
“ Shh,” Buffy soothed. “ Yeah, I saw.”
“ I think I’m gonna barf,” Riley moaned.
“ It’s okay, honey,” Buffy shushed him, with more gentleness than she felt. She wasn’t really in the mood for coddling Riley – she was so angry with Giles. There she was, feeling bad for hurting him, when all the time he was throwing his weight around like the neighbourhood bully. She took a deep breath and tried to calm down. “ Let’s get you home.”
Giles watched as Buffy and Riley headed off towards the university. Disgusted with himself, he wandered over to the edge of the footpath.
“ Giles…” Willow reached out to touch him and he jerked away. Willow drew back and looked worriedly at Tara.
“ We-we better go,” Tara stuttered. “ Come on.” Her hand found Willow’s and she gently led her away. Giles sat down on the kerb. He stared at the tarmac, lost in thought. Suddenly a pale hand was extended in front of him.
“ Saw that little barney you had with Soldier Boy,” Spike remarked. He gave a nasty smile. “ Nice work, Rupert.”
Giles looked up slowly and scowled at the blonde vampire. After a few minutes, Spike withdrew his hand. “ Smoke?”
“ Yeah, go on then,” Giles replied. Spike gave him a cigarette. Giles found his lighter in his jacket pocket. He lit his cigarette and took a long drag, coughing slightly as the smoke hit his lungs. Spike took a seat beside him.
“ You smell bloomin’ delicious,” the vampire remarked, unable to stop himself from licking his lips. “ All that blood on you…”
Giles took another drag and gazed down at the cigarette in his hand. A look of bewilderment crept over his face.
//Dear God, what the hell am I doing?//
Giles flicked away the cigarette and stood up.
“ Oi!” Spike scrambled for the discarded cigarette. “ That’s nearly a whole fag!” He fished the cigarette out of the gutter. Giles walked slightly unsteadily into the night, hitching up his jacket collar as rain began to fall. Spike scowled after him.
“ Do you know how much these bloody things cost?” he bawled. He threw away the soggy cigarette in disgust and headed for home.
