= Atlantis, Chapter One =
The natives were quickly forgotten as the large demon stood with an echoing roar. Xander let out a small yelp, before falling back to the ground in shock. The Kranthsaw loomed over him, his clawed hand still wrapped around Tara's forearm. Tara's soft eyes blinked open, widened a moment, before rolling up into her head with a dead faint.
"Umm, Spike?" Xander asked weakly. "Help?"
Spike quickly came to Xander's rescue, snatching the sword out of Xander's hands in the process. Swinging the blade in a wide arc, Spike sliced into the Kranthsaw's shoulder. Black blood oozed out of the cut, following the blood curling scream the Kranthsaw released. Xander climbed to his feet and yanked the sword out of Spike's hand.
"Oi!" Spike protested.
"This-" Xander started, stabbing the Kranthsaw in its soft underbelly. "Is for-" A stab to the thigh. "Getting us-" A slice across its cheek. "Trapped-" A large gash to the arm. "In another dimension!"
"Uh, pet?" Spike said softly, patting Xander on the shoulder as he continued to hack away at the creature. "I think you killed it."
"What? Oh, I did?" Xander grinned. "I killed it!"
"Would you mind!" Wesley hissed at them. "We are under the surveillance of the enemy!"
"Cool it, Wes." Gunn told him, walking over and picking up Tara. Cradling her in his arms, he turned to give Wesley a pointed stare. "We don't want to give them the wrong idea, man."
"Right!" Wesley exclaimed, turning back to the natives. Their leader was staring them down with cold eyes, but looked as though he had not heard the whispered conversation. "We come in peace. We wish you no harm."
"You are not of this world." The phrase was more of a statement than a question. He took a step toward Gunn, looking down at Tara's unconscious form. "This girl needs tending. We shall take you to the nearest temple. There you will be fed and clothed in proper attire. I will bring your case to the King's Order. They shall decide whether you are friend or foe."
"Oh, well thank you." Wesley smiled, and bowed accordingly. Rolling his eyes, Gunn brushed past him and followed the tall man. The other natives fell in around them, surrounding them like a wall made of men.
They walked for a long time, across a plain that seemed endless. To the north the tall wall of metal raised higher and higher, as though they were moving towards it. Finally, to the east, a stretch of water could be seen. A large boat, looking more like a canoe than anything, was perched close to the land. There was no evidence on how the vessel moved, instead it stood as lonely as the wall.
They grouped around the boat and silently entered it one at a time. Wesley attempted to generate a conversation, his curiosity overriding his nervousness. The soldiers, however, ignored him. After a frustrated look from Gunn, Wesley quieted down. Tara was laid down on a wide bench near the center of the boat. A moment later, the boat began to move, heading towards the wall and the high arch connecting it on each side of the canal.
The canal was wide, easily fitting three ships side by side. The water was clear, with a slight teal tint. As the vessel moved forward, they could spot two guarding station on the high wall. A single torch was lit on each side, but it was just enough light for Spike to identify four men per station, each holding a longbow. As they approached, the wall began to loom over them like a large beast protecting it's home. The metal was rusty in color, most likely made of brass. Spike didn't want to think about how much brass had to be used to make such a massive structure.
They passed through the arch much faster than expected. They entered another space of canal and land. There was a bridge up ahead, with a gravel like surfaced that continued onward until it disappeared around the corner. It became evident that the walls were in a circular fashion. The bridge raised quickly for their passing. Upon inspection, the gravel road was that of a race track, probably for horses.
The next wall appeared to be made of a silver like metal, possibly made of tin. There were stations and an arch here as well. Upon passing this arch, they were greeted with three paths in which to choose. The gentle night breeze caused minimal rocking of the boat as they moved forward, leaving the river that crossed the canal's path behind. Their vessel began to slow as they neared what appeared to be the last wall. It was made of a strange material, not different from metal. When Wesley questioned its origin, however, he was met with a blank stare.
Their first look at the city was a magnificent one. Buildings made of white stone, looking as though they had escaped from a Greek painting. Homes and stables made of wood and brick. Torches lit up like bright beacons. There were at least three identifiable temples that could be seen by the naked eye. Their statues stretching towards the heavens. Just past the downtown of the city was a hill, which a large estate and temple rested. The moon hung above the city, as though it was an invitation.
The canal ended in a large space of water, much like a small gulf. The boat slowly made it's way over to the neared pier. A group of soldier could be seen, making their patrols. As the boat came to a full stop, the group's leader ordered all of them out. They all group together, Spike now carrying Tara in his arms. Torches were lit, lighting up the area in an orange glow. Now that there was more light, the soldier's uniforms were now seen.
The men wore metal breast plates, formed to the shaped of their muscles. The thigh and upper knee was covered in a light material, trimmed with golden thread. They wore laced sandals and all but the man who had spoken earlier and one that greeted them wore helmets. The two without helmets met where the pier greeted the stone dock.
"Lieutenant Achilen, what have we here?" The new man asked, his voice obviously indicating his higher status.
"Commander, these are the outsiders that were spotted on the outer plains." Achilen replied. "There was a strange creature with them that they murder upon its awakening."
"I see." The Commander looked over his shoulder and stared each other them down. "Take them to the nearest temple."
"Sir?" Achilen shifted restlessly. "But... The nearest temple is that of the great Artemis. They do not accept men inside the sacred grounds."
"I'm sure they will make an exception." The Commander sneered.
"What are they talking about?" Gunn asked as they watched the two officers talk.
"Something about a temple of Artemis." Spike replied. He shifted Tara in his arms. "Personally I don't care if those bloody humans take us out into the middle of nowhere as long as they have the decency to give us some supplies."
"Not that it will help you anyway, Spike." Xander told him, smiling softly. "I don't think they are going to give us a packet of blood."
"Never know, pet." Spike grinned. "These may be kind enough people."
"Excuse me." Achilen interrupted. The man looked rather nervous. "Follow me, please."
They fell into half-hazard line as they followed the officer through the dimly lit streets. The ground appeared to be cemented with stone and brick, though here and there was a crossroad that lead to dirt roads. The homes were closely packed. Here and there they spotted a person, usually male. The natives were all dressed similar, in robes of light fabric and sandals. Most of the women had long hair, while the men's styles varied in length.
They soon found themselves entering a quart yard with a tall statue in the middle. The structure behind it was that of a tall temple, with white stone walls and an open arch for a door. The statue was about eight feet tall, considerably smaller than some of the icons they had seen from the canal. It was the figure of a woman, made of marble and wearing an outfit Xander recognized as something from Xena. They followed Achilen around the statue, taking in the flowers circling the statue.
"Stop." A stern voice broke through their observations. Achilen halted before them, his back rod stiff. They watched as a tall women exited the temple. She wore a traditional robe, in the color of forest green. Her long black hair was curled up into a braided bun. She stopped at the top of the steps, looking down at them with stern, hazel eyes. "Ah, Achilen, to what do we hold the pleasure?"
"Commander Cyrek has a request." Achilen replied.
"Does he?" The woman ask in a soft voice, her head tilted. "And this request is...?"
"Sanctuary for these travelers." Achilen told her. "They will need a place to stay until their case is brought before the Order."
"You know we normally do not allow men within these walls." The woman said. She slowly walked down the steps, her robe dragging slightly on the ground. The men stood, staring with wide eyes, as though they could not move. The woman paid them no mind, instead walking over to Spike in order to look down into Tara's sleeping face. "She shows strength, even in her dreams. What is her name?"
"Tara." Xander replied.
"You care for this girl as though she were a sister." The woman said softly, looking up into Spike's, then Xander's, eyes. "We will welcome you into our temple, but be wary. Artemis does not allow her priestesses to be touched. If we find reason, you will be punished."
"Of course." Wesley whispered. "The goddess Artemis was known for her possessiveness-"
"Wes? You're not helping things." Gunn pointed out. The woman was now staring at Wesley with narrowed eyes.
"I'm terrible sorry, miss." Wesley said quickly.
"Your intelligence exceeds your common sense, young man." The woman told him. She turned quickly and walked back up the steps. With a glance over her shoulder, she spoke. "I am the High Priestess of this temple. My name is Lady Thelsea, and I welcome you to Atlantis."
