Chapter 2
Nineteen days earlier…
The wind was crisp in
the predawn air. Ella took in the cool breeze into her lungs. She knew this
might be the last time she could ever see the sunrise. So she jumped at the
opportunity and sat on the back porch staring at up the still dark sky.
“What are you doing
out in the cold, bit?” Spike asked standing behind her.
She looked over at
him. It was the classic Spike. He had a cigarette hanging out of his mouth
staring at her with his true intensity. It made you feel like you were the only
person around in the world. She sighed.
“Catching one last sunrise,”
Ella answered before going back to staring up at the sky.
Spike looked at her
raising his scared right eyebrow.
“Last sunrise? Pet,
you’re starting to sound like a vampire from one of those bloody Ann Rice
novels,” Spike joked.
Ella let out a chuckle
before looking over at him seriously. There was no more joking this day. This
day was about facing the mortality of life. Her eyes filled with tears of fear
as she stared him. Something about staring at him made her chest hurt. It was
like she knew something was going to happen to him.
“We’re not to going to
make it through this, are we?” Ella asked softly.
Spike’s face softened
as he took another puff of his cigarette. He reached out and touched her back
gently. The look alone told her everything that she needed to know before he
even opened his mouth.
“Not all of us, El.
Not all of us,” He said gravely. “That’s war for you. You can never get through
one without a few men falling. But I can tell you one thing, out of all the
slayerettes, I can see you kicking the most prehistoric arses. If you do go
down, pet. You’re going with a fight.”
Ella looked at him
with tears trickling down her face. She felt so foolish letting him see how
truly weak she was. She was so scared of what was going to happen in the next
few hours, but she wanted to be strong like Buffy. She wanted to gain Spike’s
biggest respects. She couldn’t do that with her being vulnerable in front of
him.
“I’m not ready for
this, Spike. I’m not ready to die today,” Ella admitted softly.
“Hey, hey, who says
you have to die today?” Spike asked.
He put his arm around
her shoulder and gave her a squeeze.
“I don’t see you
dieing today, pet, In fact you’ll most likely outshine the lot of them.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“Never pictured you as one of those technologically informed
types, pet,” Spike said sitting on the edge of her desk.
Ella looked at him with a smirk.
“They pushed me off once they got to Cleveland. Giles said he talked to someone
about getting me a job with Angel,” She said with a bit of humor.
She shook her head before sitting down in the black
overstuffed chair. She rocked the chair from left to right and back again over
and over. She still was in a state of shock that Spike was alive.
“So they just gave you the shove-a-roo, huh?” Spike
commented.
Ella watched as he pulled out a cigarette and placed it in
his mouth. She raised her eyebrow at him as he lit it.
“Yeah, Giles was the bad watcher… what are you doing?” Ella
asked as he flicked a few ashes on the floor.
“What does it look like, love? I’m having a fag.” Spike
smirked.
“You’re putting your ashes on my floor!” She said with a
half laugh.
“Where would you like me to put… it… love? On your fancy new
desk?” Spike asked with a raid eye brow
Ella’s eyes grew huge at the shuttle sexual undertone of the
phrase. She tried to not make it obvious but when Spike’s smile grew, she knew
she was caught.
“Shit! Spike! That’s just wrong!” Ella cried. “My clean
brain, it’s all muddied now!”
Spike rolled his eyes at her.
“You always were one for the dramatics.” Spike teased. “Has
some git finally put it to ya?”
“Oh, no! We are so not having this conversation! What I do
with my…personal life is my
business.”
“Easy, El, I’m just teasin’.”
Ella sighed. It
wasn’t like she planned to take it so personally. It really didn’t bother her.
It was the simple fact that it was Spike talking to her like this. She mentally
laughed at herself. How could she be surprised that Spike actually said that to
her? It was Spike! He said this sort of things all the time.
“Yeah, Yeah, I just thought death would make you
less…perverted. You and your naked exercises,” Ella jabbed.
Spike stared at her.
“Where the bloody hell did you hear that?” Spike inquired
turning his full intense gaze on her.
“After…well…The night after the….big epic thingy, we all sat
in a room and recollected on the dead. Xander told me about when he was looking for
Buffy and you were doing exercise naked in bed,” Ella explained softly.
She bit her bottom lip and looked down. There was a tense
and quiet moment between them before Spike finally broke it.
“Which ones went down in the fight?” Spike asked glancing
over at her with a grim look.
“A lot of them Spike”
“Be a bit more specific pet.”
Ella’s brows knit together.
He himself had said they would lose people but the up close fact of it
was still hard on her. Now she had to
tell him about Anya. Ella knew he and
Anya had a past but what it entailed she wasn’t sure. She took a deep breath.
“Anya…she went down protecting Andrew against the
Bringers. Of course most of the
potentials made slayers.” Ella glanced
away. His eyes too much to bear at the moment. “Then there was Principal wood, he died a couple days after. Faith was really upset.
The Scooby gang, well all but Anya, survived.”
Spike looked down for a moment before tossing the cigarette
into the floor and crushing it out with his foot. She was very lucky she had
wooden floors or her carpet would have been a goner on her first day.
“Anya was only one of the few people I could stand. She was
quite a cool bird.”
“I didn’t know she had feathers.”
He shot his look at her as she smirked at her really lame
joke. He rolled his eyes at her before she really felt him watching her.
“Not Really looking yourself, pet. In Fact you look like
hell. Seen any sleep recently?” Spike asked a bit concerned.
Ella looked up at him before sighed. She rubbed her face and
just looked away.
“Would you stop reading me? You know I hate it when you do
that,” Ella complained.
Spike tilted his head to the side before smiling at her.
“So…You miss me, pet?”
Her head snapped straight over to him in surprise. How the
hell did he do that? How the hell did he read her so well? That wasn’t fair!
She wanted to keep a few things secret but Spike being Spike she could never
keep things from him. Stupid Vampires and their keen senses.
“Of course, I missed you,” Ella said softly. “With a chance
of getting really really mushy, you were one of my closest and greatest
friends.”
She took a deep breath and let it out harshly. She forced
herself up off the chair and went to the opposite end of the room. She stared out at the cityscape. She felt ridiculous. She didn’t want Spike to
know exactly how deep her feelings went.
In fact Ella didn’t want to admit just how deep within her very self
Spike was. She couldn’t let it matter
now.
“How was Buffy?” Spike asked softly.
She stayed quiet for a moment. She didn’t know what to tell
him. Buffy didn’t really grieve for him but Ella didn’t want to break his
heart. She didn’t want to cause him more pain than he all ready had. Ella
wanted to just lie to him so she gut him worse. If she did lie and he found out it would only
ruin his trust in her and that is the one thing she could never stand to do.
“She was ok. Buffy didn’t say much but when we did talk, I
think she felt…free.” Ella said distantly. “She didn’t have the burden of the
saving the world on her shoulders anymore.”
They stayed quiet for several moments before Ella turned and
looked at Spike. He was trying to hide the fact he was crushed. She remembered
hearing Buffy tell Spike she loved him. It was something that Spike had always
wanted but when Buffy told her that he didn’t think she was telling the truth,
it crazily made sense.
She walked slowly over to Spike before putting her hand on
his shoulder and giving it a squeeze.
“She misses you.” Ella whispered simply.
Spike looked up at her with his brilliant blue eyes filled
with questions and hopes. She wished she could just give him everything. She
wanted him for the first time, to be really happy.
“You know she wanted to give me a bit of comfort before I
went, told me she loved me. Dinnt mean
it though pet.”
“But Spike, she did. At least, she told me she did. ”
Ella wrapped him into a warm embrace. He deserved so much
for what he did. He wasn’t William, The Bloody anymore. He was Spike the vampire with the cocky
attitude and a soul. He was sensitive and caring. She sighed. He was her best
friend. Go figure, a slayer’s best friend was none other than a Vampire.
“Enough of this bloody mushy crap. I want to see that bugger
of a flat you have,” Spike said trying to lighten the mood.
She looked at him with a quizzical look.
“Flat? I have a flat?” Ella asked. “I’m kinda just staying
at hotel.”
“Oh bugger! There is no bloody way Peaches can not supply
you with some classy digs!”
Spike grabbed her hand and started for Angel’s office. She’d
never been more impressed with a guy in her life. She didn’t know why Spike
called Angel peaches but she had to admit that is one hell of a nick name. It made her wonder what Angel did to earn it.
Maybe he choked on a peach seed. That would funny but she doubted it.
Spike walked straight into Angel’s office without even
knocking. Angel stood up looking quite pissed off at the appearance of Spike.
She wouldn’t mind seeing them get into a tussle, then
again two very old strong vampires fighting could create some damage to the
very well designed building. Perhaps, she should get Spike out of there as soon
as she could.
“Get the girl a bloody apartment and a good one,” Spike
ordered.
“Since when do I take orders from you, Spike?”
“The girl deserves a flat, Peaches! SO get her one!”
“No!”
“This is how you treat your employees? Make them live in a
box!”
“Spike! GET OUT! I’m not giving her an apartment and that’s
the end of it! Now, why don’t you just go Europe
and leave me alone!”
Ella stood there being totally ignored but it was ok. She
was given the chance to observe them. There was so much tenacity between them,
it was practically overwhelming. She had to make a note to look up background
information on both of them. There had to be a reason why they were really
rivals besides the fact they both had intimate and romantic relations with
Buffy.
“You wouldn’t let anyone helpless go. What happed to you, Angel?
”
“HEY!” Ella inquired. “I’m not that helpless! I am a vampire
slayer.”
Angel scuffed at the comment. “I don’t think so, and this
can be saved for later. SO will the both of you GET OUT OF MY OFFICE!” Angel
yelled.
“Jeez, you’re Mr. cranky pants today aren’t you?” Ella asked
heading for the door. “I don’t know why Buffy loves you. You’re a very
insulting person. No wonder she doesn’t trust you anymore. ”
There was a low growl as Angel looked at her. Before Ella
knew it, she was knocked to the ground in the lobby by Angel. His face was in
true vamp form and his yellow eyes read Angelus and not Angel. He raised his
hand to punch her but she was quicker. She punched him then kneed him in the
groin and jumped up to her feet. She was in combat mode now.
There was no way Angel is going to make out of this fight alive,
Ella thought cockily.
Angel steadied himself against the pain in his groin and
kicked Ella in the stomach sending her across the room into a wall by the
elevator. She let out a groin then straightened up as Angel punched her in the
face, again. She spit out the blood onto the wooden floor then pulled herself
up right.
She punched Angel in the nose, and then kicked him in the
stomach making him hunch over in pain. He straightened up and was going to go
after her again but a flash of white and leather breezed past her. Spike
tackled Angel on to the stairway and punched his face. It was all out war!
Ella watched as the boys went all over the lobby it went
from a punch in the face to a kick in the stomach then back to a punch. It was
like they were getting out sexual frustration but without the whole actual
liking of the person.
It finally reached enough when the boys went through Angel’s
window. She walked to the brawling vamps before they could part. She pulled them away from each other and
threw them at opposite ends of the office.
“THAT’S ENOUGH!” Ella yelled.
She looked at Spike and pointed at him.
“We’re going now!” Ella commanded.
She looked at Angel with a glare.
“You think you won’t have to deal with this as a
consequence? You’re wrong. I’m telling Buffy everything that you did today.
Let’s see how the relationship lasts,” Ella mocked.
“So basically you’re a tattle tale?” Angel questioned
angrily.
“No, I’m your baby sitter to make sure you don’t fuck up.”
Ella retorted before striding out of the office with her hips swaying with
anger.
