Something was wrong with the whelp. Spike had been watching him carefully for the past few weeks, and had noticed the lack of the boy's usual upbeat commentary and ever-present smile. Ever since that bitch Anyanka had dropped him flat, Xander seemed to be withdrawing into himself. He hated to admit it, but he admired the boy, the way he saw the humor in any situation. Spike had learned a lot about Xander during the time he had lived with him, and had slowly grown to look forward to his company. He enjoyed the chance to hear the boy talk about nothing; getting a laugh at the little quips that Xander made, how the whelp was the only one among the lot of them who still treated him with fear and respect after he got this blasted chip in his block.
Xander's sense of humor had been remarkably absent lately, and his so-called friends had yet to notice. They had a habit of looking through the boy. He hated them for being so caught up in their own excuses-for-lives that they couldn't see that Xander was hurting. The vampire just wanted them to take some notice; to realize that their sarcastic, happy friend had been replaced by this pale, silent stranger. Spike began to think he was the only one who had seen anything wrong. He caught his Sire watching the boy the same way he was. So, he wasn't the only one who had observed Xander's strange behavior.
Xander was even quieter today than he had been, which was saying something. Spike caught the boy staring at the Slayer and that Soldier Boy git she was banging. The two were involved in a disgusting display, and the whelp couldn't seem to stop staring. Spike watched Xander watching the “happy couple.” A range of emotions crossed his face: sadness, longing, jealousy, loneliness, and finally a look of almost despair. Stupid wankers, couldn't they see that the boy was still recovering from the demon chit? Gods knew, he himself had experienced heartbreak. Then Xander began staring at Angel intently, who was doing some staring of his own at Slutty. 'Oh, and brooding. Can't forget the brooding.' Spike groaned mentally; 'Great, now Xander and his poof of a Sire were doing synchronized brooding. Somebody had to put a stop to this, or they'd be having a Grand Brood-Off in half a mo.'
He said his piece, which got the Slayer and her boy-toy to actually separate enough to let light between them. Xander gave him a small gratified smile. It was a genuine smile, not like those fake grins he plastered on for everyone else. Spike was sure when he saw the light actually reaching the boy's eyes. He nodded, pleased. Perhaps the whelp would be all right. A few more minutes passed, while everyone pretended to go back to research. From what Spike could tell, the only ones getting any work done were Red, Glinda, and the two ex-Watchers. He shifted in his seat. He contemplated lighting up a fag, but he supposed old Rupes might have something to say about him smoking in the shop. He turned his attention back to the boy. Xander seemed lost deep in thought, but not nearly as melancholy as before. He felt reassured enough to consider walking outside for a smoke, when suddenly, Xander stood up.
"Well, you know, I'm trying real hard, but I can't bring myself to care about whatever big nasty it is this week--"
"Muth'ark demons," interjected Giles automatically.
"Yeah, so," continued Xander as if he hadn't been interrupted, "I just don't feel like saving the world from evil right now. It's getting a little old; and seeing as how nobody's placed any orders for donuts, I doubt I'll be needed. On the slim chance that one of you remembers an errand you need running, you know where to find me. Otherwise, I'm taking a vacation from the Scooby gang."
At that, Xander calmly walked out of the Magic Box.
The stunned silence that followed his dramatic exit was deafening. Then suddenly, an explosion of noise filled the room as everyone tried to talk at once. Removing his glasses and rubbing his eyes in an expression of anxiety, Giles said, "I-I don't quite understand what just happened here."
Willow was babbling worriedly to Tara, who was making calming noises. "What could be wrong, should we bring him back, he's probably still upset about Anya, do you think he needs to talk, with the walking out, and... something's up!"
Cordelia looked at the door thoughtfully. "That boy gets weirder the longer I know him." Though she, too, had a concerned expression on her face.
Buffy was discussing it seriously with Riley. "I guess, maybe, he snapped under the pressure. I dunno, that or he's possessed again--"
Riley nodded wisely. "I've seen this before, soldiers do fine in the heat of battle but crack once we're back in the barracks."
Wesley was the impartial voice of reason. "Perhaps, someone should go after him?" Immediately, seven bodies rose, everyone but Gunn, Riley, and Wesley himself. "Erm, well, yes. I daresay you can't all go running after him at once, and we do need to stay here and try to get some research done. One or two people should suffice."
Spike and Angel shared a look of silent communication, and spoke hurriedly. "I'll go after 'im," Spike interjected, quick as a flash.
"So will I," Angel said in a quiet tone that brooked no argument. Before anyone could protest, the vampire and his Sire were out in the night.
