CHAPTER 19
THE POWER OF LOVE
The Scooby Gang plus Angel and Joyce were all in the Magic Box, reading and researching their asses off, hoping one of the books or spells would finally help them bring Buffy back.
Willow started thinking she’d never pull her best friend from that demon dimension… everything she’d tried turned out to be a total waste of time. Tara was doing her best to help her, both with spells and just to keep her sanity, but it seemed that none of it was working…
Angel was there, contacting all of his vampire and demon acquaintances , plus his Fang Gang in L.A. trying to gather more information about different dimensions, and it gave Willow some hope, but seeing him even more brooding than usually smashed her hopes.
Anya knew a few things about dimensions and she shared everything she could with the Gang, but it just didn’t seem to be enough… even a usually perky and funny ex vengeance demon started losing hope.
Giles buried himself in a ton of books, and he kept calling the Watchers’ Council quite often, to find out as much as possible about how to find a dimension his Slayer had gone to, and how exactly to pull her out of there.
Xander was worried more than ever in his life, and he tried his hardest to keep researching, he just wanted to find out at least the tiniest information that could somehow help them bring his best friend back.
Joyce knew nothing about the supernatural, but she was determined to bring her daughter back alive, so she helped Giles and the rest of the Gang as much as she could. She even closed her gallery for a few days, because she was unable to concentrate on work while her daughter was missing. It was like a nightmare she just couldn’t wake up from.
It was a nightmare for all of them. As time went by, they kept getting more and more agitated, nervous and worried.
“Why are there so many dimensions? Geez, there really is a ‘nothing but shrimp’ dimension! There is a dimension where I’m still dating Oz, and a dimension where demons took over Sunnydale, and a dimension where Angel is human and dating Buffy, and a million others, and I don’t know where Buffy is!”-Willow almost yelled, her voice was shaky and she ran her fingers through her hair in despair. She’d never felt so useless and it was driving her crazy. Spells just kept backfiring, she couldn’t even count how many carpets she’d burnt while doing spells.
“Exactly! God, if we could only find something of Buffy’s that’s really personal, a thing she cherished more than any other… Maybe that thing would, like, have a piece of Buffy we need to pinpoint her whereabouts…”-Anya said, suddenly feeling like she was on the right track.
“Anya, that’s actually a really good idea!!”-Angel exclaimed, for the first time looking like he might actually smile.
“Are you onto something, Angel?”-Willow asked when she saw all the hope in his dark eyes.
“Remember, when I was in a hell dimension… Buffy brought the ring I had given her to my mansion, and she left it there… and I got out of there, I don’t know how or why, but I got out.”
“Holy mother of god! And you’re just mentioning it now?”-Xander almost jumped off of his chair, looking bewildered.
“I forgot about it! It might not even work, but we should definitely give it a shot.”-Angel said “But, I think that Buffy’s Claddagh Ring had vanished when it brought me back. Maybe my ring would bring her back somehow, like her ring brought me back. I never take it off; I like to think a piece of her is always there with me.”-Angel said, his dark, expressive eyes got a bit watery suddenly.
Everyone in the room was quiet when he said that, they needed some time to let it all sink in.
“You really love my daughter, don’t you?”-Joyce asked Angel, her heart breaking when she remembered she had asked him to leave so Buffy could have a normal life. It made her think that the love they shared was true and it would never go away, despite the distance and their time spent apart.
“With all my soul. I always will love her, but I’m not the right guy for her… She deserves much better.”-Angel whispered and absent mindedly touched the ring on his hand.
“I hate to break all the touchy feelings, but I think we should motor now. If that ring really does have the mojo we need, let’s give it a try.”-Anya said, she started feeling really impatient. She wasn’t one to express her feelings, except when it was about her sex life, and the Gang didn’t know just how much the ex demon actually cared about them all.
Sometimes she thought Buffy was a bit annoying, but she had to admit that the blonde girl kicked ass really good, and kept them all safe, and Anya missed her. She didn’t want anything bad to happen to Buffy, but she was afraid Buffy wasn’t in the land of daisies and sunshine going la-la-la.
“You’re right, Anya… Joyce, can you drive me there?”-Angel looked at Buffy’s mom, who reminded him so much of Buffy, and he just hoped that he would manage to bring her back because that poor woman looked like she aged ten years in a really short time.
“Of course, let’s go!”-Joyce said and they ran towards her SUV that was parked in front of the Magic Box.
“Goddess, make it work…”-Tara whispered and Willow gave her a tiny smile and squeezed her hand.
Joyce drove like a spaz, she didn’t care about the speed limit; she just wanted her daughter back.
“I wanna go home… please, let me go…”-Buffy mumbled in her sleep and Faith woke up and pulled her into a tighter hug, wishing she could chase Buffy’s nightmares away. She wondered if she still played the main role in those nightmares…
“It’s ok, B… You’re safe now.”-Faith whispered in Buffy’s ear and gently kissed her face… which was covered in tears even though Buffy was still asleep.
Buffy kept sobbing quietly, her chest rising and falling, kinda shivering with the sobs that were shaking all of her tiny body. She looked like a scared little girl, not a scary Vampire Slayer, and Faith started wondering if that scary Slayer would ever be really back.
“Buffy, wake up… Come on, it’s all five by five…”-Faith said and gently shook the blonde Slayer.
“Faith?”-Buffy looked surprised when she realized they were cuddled up in a cave and Angelus and Darla were nowhere to be seen.
“I got you out of there, remember? You’re safe now. Come on, don’t cry.”-Faith whispered and gently wiped Buffy’s tears away.
“The dream I’ve just had was so vivid, Faith…”-Buffy whispered, trying her best to stop sobbing.
“I know, but it was just a dream, B. Wanna tell me about it?”
“No… I’m ok. I’ll be fine. Five by five.”-Buffy managed to force a little half smile and wondered if she was really strong enough to be five by five. Too many scars, both physical and psychological, marked Buffy and she started thinking she’d never be able to really get rid of them.
“Here we are…”-Angel said when he and Joyce finally got to his old mansion.
“God, please, make it work…”-Joyce whispered, even though she wasn’t religious.
Angel pulled his Claddagh Ring off and placed it on the floor, where was still a shadow his own body had made when he fell out of Hell.
“Nothing’s happening… Why is nothing happening?”-Joyce asked, her voice shaky and panicked. She kinda expected her daughter just to drop from the sky or something, as soon as the ring touched the ground.
“I don’t know, Joyce… I just… I wanna wait a bit more. I don’t want Buffy to appear and be all alone…”-Angel said, feeling a huge lump in his throat. He stared at the Claddagh Ring like he hoped the power of his gaze would bring Buffy back.
“My baby… I just want her back so much, Angel… I can’t stand to think that she might be dead already and that’s the reason she’s not back to us yet.”-Joyce said, covered her mouth with her hand and started crying and sobbing loudly. Tears were flowing down her pale face and Angel pulled her into a tight hug.
“Don’t think like that, Joyce… Buffy is stronger than we all think… I’m sure she’s all right…”-Angel whispered, and really hoped he was right.
“Holy shit, what’s going on?!”-Faith cursed when the cave they were in started shaking.
“Earthquake?! They never end well…”-Buffy said and pulled Faith out of the cave as fast as she could. H didn’t look happy either, he was making a lot of noise and standing on his back legs, waving his front legs like he was trying to kick an invisible monster away.
“This is so weird… I don’t think this is normal…”-Faith said, her voice filled with worry.
“Faith! Hold my hand tightly; I don’t want us to get separated somehow!”-Buffy yelled when a really strong wind started blowing. The earthquake seemed to be getting stronger too and the Slayers held onto each other as tightly as they could, both of them looking scared off their minds.
“What the hell is this, B?!”-Faith yelled, and tightened her grip on Buffy’s body, cause she felt like they might both just fly away into different directions.
“I don’t know, but whatever you do, don’t let go of me!”-Buffy screamed, pulled Faith down on the ground and closed her eyes when the wind got even stronger and dust kept flying into her eyes.
“Angel, what’s happening?”-Joyce asked in a very high pitched voice when the mansion started shaking.
“I think we should run out, this mansion might actually fall apart!”-Angel yelled, he’d never felt an earthquake so hard.
“What’s happening?! What does this mean?!”-Joyce yelled, looking back toward the place where the Ring still lay, as Angel pulled her toward the exit.
“I don’t know, Joyce, but we need to survive this to find out what it means!”-Angel yelled back and stared in shock when the ceiling just shattered as soon as they got out of the mansion.
“Buffy… what if your Ring brought her back and this mansion just killed her?!”-Joyce screamed, she felt like she would get a heart attack. She just wanted to run back inside, but Angel held her tightly and stopped her when she tried to run.
“No, Joyce, no way you’re going in there!”-Angel yelled and sat Joyce down on a bench that was far enough from the mansion, but close enough for her to see what was going on inside. “I’m going back in and you promise you’ll stay here!”
“Angel, wait! Buffy would be devastated if you died!”-Joyce yelled and Angel shot back: “And I would be devastated if she died!”
The earthquake seemed to be stopping, and Angel ran into the mansion, just hoping the Powers That Be loved Buffy enough to give her a hand and pull her out of wherever she was unharmed.
“Buffy!”-Angel screamed when he saw the woman he loved more than anything lying there on the floor, covered in dust and blood, unconscious… or dead. He just hoped she was just unconscious.
He ran to her and caught her in his arms, trying to find her pulse. It was barely there, but it was there… He hugged Buffy tightly, kissing her face and lips, and shaking her slowly to wake her up.
“Joyce, Buffy is back!”-Angel yelled and Joyce ran into the mansion like a hurricane.
“Buffy?? Oh my god, Buffy!”-Joyce screamed when she saw her daughter, lying like a corpse in Angel’s arms.
“Is she… is she…”-Joyce couldn’t force herself to say the D word.
“She’s alive… She’ll be ok…”-Angel whispered and gently placed Buffy in Joyce’s arms. Buffy’s mother burst into tears, and she didn’t know if she would ever be able to stop crying if her daughter died.
Angel stood up and let Joyce hold Buffy… He felt like he was intruding their private moment, and suddenly he felt so relieved that Buffy was back, he just wanted to cry. He didn’t even remember if he’d ever cried, but now he couldn’t stop the tears. He turned away from Joyce and Buffy and let tears run down his cheeks.
He looked around and, even though his vision was blurred with tears, he saw Faith lying behind the stones about six feet away from Buffy and Joyce.
“Oh, God, Joyce, Faith is back too!”-Angel shouted and ran to Faith, who also appeared to be unconscious…
“Faith!”-Angel yelled and shook her hard, hoping to get a reaction from her. She wasn’t moving or reacting at all, and Angel yelled out her name again. He searched for her pulse and started feeling a bit uneasy when he couldn’t find it…
He massaged her chest and hated himself because he couldn’t breathe life into her lungs.
“Joyce! Can you do CPR? I don’t breathe and I think Faith’s gone!”-Angel yelled and Joyce looked at him like she didn’t really understand anything that wasn’t Buffy’s weak heartbeat.
He repeated his question when he realized that Joyce hadn’t even registered what he was saying.
Joyce reluctantly let go of Buffy and walked over to Angel and Faith on her shaky legs.
Seeing Faith unconscious and looking so helpless, Joyce forgave her for everything she’d put them all through. She just hoped she’d be able to help the girl so she could do amends for her mistakes.
Angel ran to Buffy as soon as Joyce started doing the mouth-to-mouth on Faith, and he caught her in his arms. “I’ll take her to the car, I’ll be back in a minute.”-Angel told Joyce and walked carefully over the stones with Buffy in his arms. She looked beautiful to him even all dirty, bloody and covered in scars. He didn’t wanna think about how she’d gotten those scars because it hurt him too much to think that Buffy might have been tortured in a hell dimension.
“I love you, Buffy… you’re gonna be ok…”-Angel whispered, kissed her forehead and lips and gently placed her on the back seat of Joyce’s SUV. “I’ll be right back, my love.”-he whispered and ran back to the mansion to check what was happening with Faith.
“Angel, she’s not breathing… I can’t bring her back!”-Joyce cried, all of her body shaking with tears. “It could have been Buffy, and I wouldn’t have been able to help her!”
“Let me take her to the car… Maybe the doctors will be able to help her if we can’t. Maybe the Powers That Be will help if no one else can.”-Angel hoped and caught Faith into his arms. He and Joyce got to the car as fast as they possibly could. He placed Faith on the back seat next to Buffy and jumped in the front.
Joyce drove away even faster than before; feeling like her heart might jump out of her chest. She just hoped both girls would get out of that hospital alive… Joyce decided to believe in miracles even though poor Faith’s heart was not beating…
