New Day
Annabelle woke up slowly, stretching her back and legs feeling more relaxed and content then she had in ages. She rolled over with the intent to go back to sleep pulling the covers up over her shoulder. However it was a short lived thought when a blood curdling scream seemed to fill the hallways of the monastery. She snapped up from the bed grabbing her clothes from the floor pulling them on as she ran through the door. Annabelle followed the screams until she came into what used to be the dining room of the monastery. Her eyes went wide when she saw Caleb holding a young girl down against the table by her throat, a butchers knife in his other hand holding it before the girls eyes letting her terror grow. "Caleb!" Annabelle exclaimed rushing around to the other side of the table, "What are you doing!?" "Well good mornin' darlin'. Sleep well?" Caleb asked with a smile, while the girl still struggled helplessly in his grasp. "Stop!" She said seeing the terror in the girls eyes, starting to feel it as well. "When I woke up this mornin' there was a whole passel of new abilities that there weren't before. that weren't there before. I had to try 'em out. Here, watch this." He said as a shock went from his fingertips into the girl laying on the table. Her eyes were open but she was frozen in place. He released her throat and she just lay there helplessly. Then, Caleb held up the knife and let it go as it just hung there in the air. "Now ain't that somethin' to see?" He said a light of excitement in his eyes. The knife started to move and twirl about. "I see now what you meant about control. Like having a bolt of lightin' by the tail." The knife continued to turn until the point was aimed strait down over the girls heart. The unlimited power it gives you. Strength never dreamed possible." Annabelle could already see what was coming and her breath caught in her chest, "Caleb . . . ." "Hallelujah . . . ." Annabelle reached out grabbing the girl by her sweater and jerking her off the table just barely missing the knife as Caleb plunged it through the thick oak table and the blade stuck halfway into the stone floor beneath. It was a split second for the whole action to take place. The girl was shaking from head to toe as Annabelle helped her back to her feet wrapping an arm around her to keep her steady. Caleb starred wild eyed at Annabelle that she had just saved the girl. "Go, run for the road. Now." She whispered to her pushing her towards the door. The young woman was hesitant but then flew from the room, down the hallway then outside. "You gonna explain to me what that was?" Caleb demanded. "Caleb what are you doing??" Annabelle said in utter horror. "Where did that girl come from?" He clasped his hand behind his back, I believe the lower side of San Francisco. One of the worst and biggest cesspools of corruption and sin." "San Francisco?!" She said in confusion. "I have to tell you, Annabelle. These new abilities are absolutely unbelievable. Telekinesis, Teleportation, just a thought or gesture and it happens. The power itself, Oh Annabelle. There's nothin' like it. Nothin' that could equal it." He said with a chuckle. Annabelle just starred at him across the table. "My God," She said in shock, "I've given unlimited powers to a misogynistic serial killer." She said in awe of her own stupidity. She turned and hurried out of the room heading back down the hallway. "Annabelle" Caleb said following after her. "Stop." He said calling out to her. She stopped next to the bedroom door not turning back. He walked up behind her, "I wasn't gonna kill her, sweetheart." "You were just going to torture her." Annabelle said not understanding how that was any better. "Yeah but we could just heal her up again good as new." He said. Annabelle turned and starred at him, "Don't say we. Don't ever say we when you do these sorts of things, Caleb!" She said raising her voice in frustration. Caleb reached out taking her by the wrist, turning her towards him. "No, ya don't understand what I'm tryin' to tell ya." He took her hand almost dragging her with him as they returned to the dining room. Annabelle was horrified that the girl had been returned to the table she'd been liberated her from, in just seconds. Caleb pulled her to the table next to him. "Now watch." He instructed her. He took out a knife and picked up the girls hand. "No!" She said grabbing his hand, but Caleb took her by the wrist prying it away. "Annabelle, just wait now. It ain't gonna hurt her, thats why she's asleep this time." Annabelle was hardly okay with this and wasn't sure about it at all. Caleb took the girls wrist and made a long deep cut down her forearm. It was bleeding profusely and Annabelle was breathing harder starting to panic. "Calm down, honey lamb." He said putting the knife aside. Then he put her arm down and took Annabelle's with both of his holding it over the wound in the young woman's arm. "Caleb what are you . . . ." Annabelle said starting to pull her hand away. "Shhhh, Annabelle, relax, relax." He said resting his hand on her lower back pushing her closer. "Close your eyes sweetheart." He instructed into her ear. She hesitated at first before closing her eyes tight. "Now, concentrate. Fell your power deep inside you. Now imagine this girls arm. Whole, uninjured, like it was." She was quiet and had a hard time clearing her mind and calming down. "Breathe slow, concentrate." He said again. Suddenly the familiar light began to glow in the palm of her hand. Another moment passed before the whole of the girls arm began to glow. Caleb grinned as he watched. After another few seconds, the glow began to dim and subside. Annabelle pulled her hand away feeling a little dizzy. She looked at the girls arm and it was completely healed. Like it had never been hurt. Her eyes went wide as she reached out feeling her arm turning it over. There wasn't a mark on her. Caleb watched her and smiled. "I . . . . I healed her." Annabelle said excited a bright light in her eyes, "I healed her wound!!" Caleb laughed, "you surely did sweet pea." He said kissing her cheek. "Thats just one of the small things we can do. I never had these sort of abilities with the First. It gave me unmatched strength . . . but you've given me so much more. Annabelle looked at her hands wide eyed never having believed she could do something so amazing . . . so good, so right. "I can help people. Really help them." She said astonished. "You've been thinkin' all this time you were becomin' somethin' bad. Some kind of monster. Couldn't be further from the truth, you can see that yourself." Caleb explained. "What else can I do?" She asked anxiously. He grinned seeing she was finally ready to accept and begin exploring her powers. "Why don't we find out." He said with a grin. Annabelle looked at the girl again, "Not on her." She said seriously. "She needs to go home." Caleb looked at her for a minute and sighed, "Alright, okay I'll take her back." Annabelle smiled a little, "Thank you."Quiet Time
Annabelle sat on the floor with her legs crossed as she looked out the window across the field, witting in her journal. She liked the silence and the calm that came from not being surrounded by Bringers, and slayers, and pure evil with a constant feeling of inevitable doom. "What on earth are you doin' Annabelle?" Caleb said as he came in resting his hands on his hips. "Come on, we got things." He said motioning for her to come with him. "It's such a beautiful day today, Caleb." She said turning and looking up at him, "Couldn't we just take a day to enjoy the fresh air and sunlight?" She asked. He half laughed and walked over to her, "You have to be thee single most unambitious girl there ever was." Caleb crouched down next to her and took her journal from her hands closing it up. "Thought we'd work some more on that whole teleportin' thing today. See if we can't work out those little kinks, we were runnin' into. Annabelle looked up at him a moment. "Where did you wanna try to go today?" She asked. "Let's go for accuracy more then distance this time. We could do with storin' up some food, gettin' low on rations. How about that little town up the road. 'Bout 10 miles down the road." He asked. "Make it there together then bring stuff back.": He held up a stopwatch, "And we can see how long it takes us." She wasn't exactly excited about it like Caleb was, but she gave him a nod and stood from the floor stretching a little. "Okay," she said with a small smile. He held out his hand to her and she took it.Discussions
"We've been here for over a month, Annabelle. We can't stay here forever." Caleb began. "We need to go back." "But we don't have to go back, Caleb." Annabelle answered honestly. "There's nothing back there for us." She said softly. "Of course there is, darlin'. It may have escaped your mind, but we were workin' on an apocalypse when we took this here little trip. Now we've sussed out a lot of the new abilities you've been given, had a little practice, we can go back and finished what we'd started." He explained. Annabelle looked nervous a moment turning her eyes down. "What is it, girl?" He asked recognizing the look. "It's over, Caleb. All of it." She said softly, "There's nothing there. Sunnydale doesn't exist anymore, its a giant creator. The hell mouth collapsed on itself." "What?" He said in disbelief as he moved to sit next to her. "What do you . . . how? . . . when?" He asked. "Almost two weeks ago. The Slayers gathered the last of the potentials, the witch used the slayers weapon to bestow the slayers power on all of them. Every potential. They made a stand at the seal, their Vampire used a talisman of pure light. He gave his life to to collapse the entire hell mouth into itself, and all the tunnels below the city. Theres nothing left there Caleb." "Why didn't you say something about this sooner?" Caleb asked, "What about the First?" "It's gone." She said softly, "sent back from where it came from. Trapped deep within the earth a prisoner again. It was completely drained of it's power. Buried with the ashes of it's army." She sighed a little, "It can't come back Caleb. Not for a very long time." Caleb starred at her in shock, "How could I have not felt this. How is it you knew of it and I did not?" Caleb said becoming more excitable by the moment. "I shoulda felt somethin'. A twinge a hint of it." He said. Caleb looked at her, "Why?" Annabelle didn't want to upset him, especially since she could feel everything he felt now since they'd merged so deeply. "You don't carry the First's power anymore. It's been to long since you merged with It . . . now all that's left in you, is what has passed on from me." Caleb looked at her, "Annabelle, why do you I get distinct feelin' that you've been holdin' back with me. You know more about whats goin' on then you've been sayin', little girl." Annabelle looked up at him for a long time. "Yes." She finally answered. "Why." He demanded. "If you had gone back to Sunnydale, stayed there . . . you would have died. Horribly." Annabelle explained. "The Slayer, Buffy Summers, would have murdered you with the Slayers weapon. Brutally, without mercy." She said tears in her eyes. "You had no chance." Caleb just starred at her, "How do you know all this? Such explicit details of my alleged demise?" "I saw it Caleb." She said, "I saw it as clear as if I had been standing witness to it." Annabelle sighed, "The first couldn't give you enough power to defeat her and the weapon she wielded." He was silent as he listened to her, and shook his head still in shock. "That's why you brought us here and kept us here. To keep me from goin' back and rejoinin' the losin' side." Caleb looked at her again. "As soon as I learned I could see things far away, things to come . . . I started to watch the Vineyard, to see what was happening. Then I learned to push forward to see what was to come."The tears that had welled up in her eyes slid down her cheeks, "It was so terrible, Caleb. I couldn't let you go back there, I couldn't let you die like that. Caleb just starred at her another moment before he stood lost in thought. Then he left the room to go and consider everything that had been said.To Be Continued . . . . . .
