Chapter 19
Stepping through the door, Dawn paused and looked back at Spike for encouragement. Waving her onwards he followed her into the small dimly lit room and frowned. He had never seen anyone he loved look so deathly pale and to be quite frank, it was disturbing him.
Seeing her mom fast asleep in her bed, her head bandaged up with bandages as white as her skin was scary. Buffy had dashed off to the ladies room as soon as they had arrived but Dawn had needed to take a minute to compose herself before she entered the room.
“Mommy?” She whispered, the silence of the room making everything seem so much worse.
“Let her sleep.” A voice spoke from the doorway. Jumping up for the doctor, Spike requested an update on Joyce’s condition.
Hearing that her mom was going to be fine, Dawn sagged into the chair behind her, pulling it as close to the bed as she could so she could hold her mom’s hand while she slept.
Returning to the private room, Buffy smiled thinly at the sight. Dawn was curled up in an old armchair, her hand grasping their mom’s tightly. Stepping into the room she was abruptly reminded of her responsibilities as she saw Spike pressed up against the wall. He stood impossibly still, just watching Dawn with an eerie fascination.
What kind of freak made friends with a fourteen year old girl? Better yet, what kind of one hundred year old evil master vampire made friends with the Slayers fourteen year old sister?
Seeing the scowl that the Slayer cast in his direction Spike took his chance to leave. Promising to return later, he bid goodbye to Dawn and slipped out the door.
Her gaze returning to her mother’s face, Dawn was rewarded with a fluttering of eyelids.
Settling herself on the bed, Buffy took the opportunity to talk to Dawn before their mom woke up.
Opening her eyes slowly, Joyce forced her features into a twisted smile. The one side of her face was completely numb and the other was unsurprisingly painful. Hearing her daughters talk to one another like civilised adults was something that she so rarely witnessed that she kept silent, her eyes drifting shut and the pain easing as she listened intently to them talk about their lives.
When the conversation inevitably turned to Spike, Joyce faked a small cough, opening her eyes and smiling at her girls.
Rushing to hug her, both girls were delighted to see her awake and relatively cognisant. The small family clinging tightly to one another for comfort as the moon rose higher in the sky and the vampire watched through the window.
