Chapter 18 – There's always another sunrise
His
cheek stung from the sudden blow and Gunn swirled around to defend
himself against the demon that had suddenly attacked him. But instead
of a demon he was faced with a pissed looking Cordelia. Judging by
the look on her face the demon would have been the less deadly
alternative at the moment.
“Cordy, what are you doing
here?” He hated the slightly scared undertone of his voice,
that he barely managed to hide. But Cordelia was scary, when she was
just pissed off and he had rarely seen her looking as angry as she
did at the moment.
“How dare you do this to Wes?”
He
should have expected it, should have known that Cordelia would never
keep out of things that weren't her problem. He wanted to admit that
he had been wrong and that he was sorry, but like it had done when he
spoke to Wes his mouth was quicker than his mind or heart. “Me?
He was the one who...”
Ow.
Before he had been able to even really start his sentence Cordy had
delivered another slap to his cheek. Jabbing her finger at his chest
she talked to him. “I don't care who has done what. You will
listen to me now.”
Knowing
that it was better to just keep silent Gunn kept his internal
grumbling to himself, while he waited for
Cordelia to continue. “I'm sick of watching Wes moping around
the office everyday. Whatever there is between the two of you, make
it right again. I don't particularly want to get killed, just because
Wesley is too lost in his misery to pay attention to the demon we are
fighting. So you better go and talk to him, mister.” Having
delivered her speech Cordelia stared at him expectantly.
Wes
was miserable? Because of him? Gunn ignored the voice that asked him
what the hell he had expected his lover to be and screamed at him,
what a stupid fuck he really was. It was as if he suddenly could see
very clearly what had gone wrong.
And
now that his stupid, misplaced pride wasn't clouding his view he
could well admit
that Wes had been right and he had been wrong. He had known how
sensible the Englishman was about their relationship and how insecure
he could be at times and yet he had gone and hurt him. Stupid.
“I...Cordy...I.” Rubbing
his hand over his face he watched as Cordy's expression softened, the
hard edge around her mouth transforming into a slight smile. “I've
been an idiot.”
“Yes. But I don't think it's
too late. You should go to him.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another
lonely evening. Wes sat on his couch, staring at the pages of his
demonology book. He was trying to read them for at least two hours
now, but whenever he tried to focus his thoughts wandered off to
Gunn. Sudden anger boiling up inside him he threw the book across the
room before reaching for the tumbler of whiskey that stood next to
the couch.
God.
He was such a miserable idiot. If only he'd been able to forget about
Gunn. But his former lover always kept pushing back into his mind.
Wes self-pitying was interrupted by the sound of a door bell. For a
second he hoped that it would be Gunn, but he had already squashed
that hope down before he even rose to open the door.
He
didn't even look at the person standing in front of him as he opened
the door, since he planned to shoo whoever it was away anyway. But
then that person spoke and he rapidly lifted his head as the
well-known voice reached his ears.
Gunn.
In front of his door. In the middle of the night. His heart suddenly
pounding in his chest Wesley couldn't help but stare at his former
lover as different emotions flickered through his mind. Surprise,
anger, happiness, mistrust, love, need, lust, pain, wonder. He
couldn't even identify them all. It seemed as if a thousand years had
passed, when Gunn asked again.
“Can I come in?” Only
now did he note how small and sad his lover's voice sounded. It
wasn't the proud and self-righteous sound Gunn had addressed him with
before they broke up. Maybe, just maybe there was still a chance for
them.
Stepping
away from the door in a silent invitation Wes went back to the couch,
sinking down heavily. He didn't know what to say. The silence was
like a heavy blanket covering the room as Gunn started pacing in
front of his couch.
He
wondered if maybe he should be the one to speak, but Wes simply
didn't know what to say. It had been Gunn, who had been wrong. To his
relief his former lover suddenly sat down next to him and started to
speak.
“I'm sorry, Wes. I...”
Gunn looked down at his hands, nervously
playing with his fingers, a habit Wesley knew he only displayed when
he didn't know what to say. “I was an ass, ok. I never tried to
even see it your way. I'm so sorry. Do you think that you could
maybe...um... forgive me?”
Reaching
out his hand Wes placed it over Gunn's nervous fingers, stopping
their movement. It felt so good to touch the other man again, even if
it was merely a friendly gesture. It didn't matter whether
or not he wanted to forgive the other man, he didn't have a choice in
that anyway. He needed Gunn too much to let him go, now that he had
returned. But he also needed to explain what had happened. They
couldn't simply pretend that everything was ok.
“Gunn...I. You hurt me.”
Their
eyes met as Gunn lifted his head. As their gazes connected Wes could
feel the old spark flare up again, maybe even stronger than it was
before. No, there was no way that he could let Gunn go. “I
know. But I didn't want to. I was too stubborn and proud to even
think about how you felt.”
Carefully
reaching out his hand Gunn started to stroke his face. It was strange
how after everything they had been through together they now needed
to treat each other like the most fragile porcelain.
Not exactly a feeling Wes liked.
“You promised me that you
wouldn't keep our relationship a secret. You destroyed my trust, when
you broke this promise.”
Wes
could see the sadness shining in Gunn's eyes, when the darker man
answered him. “Yes, I know. Just...please give me the chance to
win back your trust. The last days without you have been hell. I need
you, Wes.”
Nodding
his head Wesley allowed Gunn to pull him close, welcoming his lover's
warm lips as they connected with his mouth. So long, too long without
this. Desperation was now flooding his mind. He needed Gunn back,
back where he belonged. Throwing his arms around his lover Wesley
almost climbed onto his lap as he tried to bring their bodies closer
together.
Their
tongues danced with each other and yet he could feel that something
had changed between them. He didn't think that it was necessarily
a bad development. It felt as if their relationship had become
closer, more intense, the threat of loosing the other bringing them
together.
And
maybe at some time Gunn would finally find the courage to officially
make him his lover. Wes hoped so, but deep inside he also knew that
it wasn't the most important thing anymore. If trying to force Gunn
to acknowledge him as his lover meant
loosing the other man, Wes was willing to stay in the shadows. The
need and love he felt for Gunn was greater than the need to not deny
who he was anymore.
