Hard Realities
Annabelle didn't recover from her fall as quickly as she had from other injures. The damage done form the many hits she took as she tumbled down the stairs was extensive. Stone stairs against a brick wall and hard oak banister had no give or cushioning to it whatsoever. The split on her head they tended with plastic stitch strips to put the skin together, stop her bleeding, and hopefully help it heal faster. The dark, deep, large bruising they treated with ice packs to help make the swelling go down. Yet the most important question had yet to be answered, and require a trip away from the vineyard. Sunnydale hospital was long since abandoned of patients and staff, but all the medical equipment had been left behind. Caleb and some of the Bringers brought Annabelle into the ER, and were waiting. Caleb stayed close to the unconscious young woman, as the Bringers roamed the hospital inside and out guarding their leader. He paced slightly having been here for quite a while now. Finally the doors burst open, a man being drug in by Bringers on both sides. They brought him before Caleb and held him in place. "Hmm. Caught a young one did they? I sure hope you're well practiced in your trade, doc." Caleb said. "What do you want!!" The man exclaimed having been abducted from his home in the next town. "I have a patient for you, needs some attendin' too, checked over, make sure everythin' is good." He stated stepping to the side revealing Annabelle laying on the hospital bed. "You see to her, do a good job, . . . you'll be back on your way by mornin'." The Bringers released him and he jerked his arms away from them. "You've got a strange way about you for a priest." The doctor said, rubbing his arms. "There is a quarantine on Sunnydale issued last week. What are you still doing here? There's no one left for missionary work" "I think instead of asking so many questions, you should be gettin' to bein' concerned about your patient" Caleb warned. "Should have everythin' you need, everyone left in such a fast hurry, didn't bother to take anythin' with them." Caleb had a way about him, long before the First came, that could be calm, pleasant, inviting. But within an instant it could become quite apparent just how dangerous he was. It was a look in his eyes, something inherently evil, always turning just beneath the surface. The doctor saw it just as clear as day, and decided perhaps it would be best to cooperate with his captors. He walked carefully passed Caleb and walked to Annabelle's bed side looking at the extremely injured girl. "What happened to her?" He asked opening each of her eyes to check the neural responses. "Took a header down a flight of stairs." Caleb answered simply. "Not the most graceful girl there ever was I imagine." "I'll need to examine her, run some tests." The doctor said. "You do what you need to do." Caleb said an he headed out the doors. However he paused, "She wa . . . she is pregnant." He stated not looking back at him, "Might want to check on that first." Then he left to let the doctor do his job.Next Step
"What's your plan now? What's to be done next?" Caleb asked leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. "I miss the days when you didn't brood constantly." The First said, "You used to enjoy the power I give you more." It stopped beside him, "Smiled much more often too." "Since when did smilin' become part of my job description?" Caleb said not really looking for an answer. "I don't understand what your so grumpy about, Caleb. You said it yourself, you don't have any time to be raising children." It pointed out. "It's gone now, ain't no need to be talkin' about it." Caleb snapped just wanting to move on. "How is she?" it asked. "She's depressed." he thought it was an obvious assumption after what had happened. "Doc said it was to be expected." "I'm assuming that he meant her. She was going to be depressed." The First said. "Back to my first question of what the plan is now." Caleb wasn't much in the mood for small talk at the moment. The First smirked at him, "Get her back on her feet. Do whatever it takes. Oh yes, if you feel you want to get 'physical' with her at any point . . . I suggest that precautions be taken to insure this doesn't happen again and she need to take another flight down the stairs." Then it distorted and disappeared. Caleb rolled his eyes slightly before he headed up the stairs back to the bedroom. When he opened the door, it was dark. Save for a few candles near the bed on the nightstand. Stepped inside and closed the door behind him. Annabelle was awake, dressed, but sitting up on the bed leaning against the wall. Her hair was pulled back in a lose ponytail, a cloth tied over her hair at the back of her neck. He didn't talk and walked in looking at her. Caleb moved to the other side of the bed and sat down next to her, leaning against the wall as well. Caleb sighed a and looked over at her,. Annabelle clutched a pillow against her chest, twisting her fingers around the corner of it slowly, starring at the far wall. "You need to come out of this room." He said seriously, "Almost all your injuries have healed up now, can't hardly tell anythin' happened." She wasn't responding and he wasn't entirely sure she heard him. "Sweetheart, there is work to be done. You can't just hide away in here by yourself." Still, no response from Annabelle. Caleb didn't know how to deal with this. Bullying her more right now would only make the problem worse. He sat up and started to reach for her but she cringed and shied away from him. Caleb didn't let her retreat deter him and he took her arm, "Come here." He said taking the pillow from her and tossing it away. He caught her other arm and pulled her over to him, moving her closer where he could wrap his arms around her. Annabelle resisted first, but then surrendered before to long. He knew what was coming next, and he had to let her cry it out. She hadn't shed a single tear since she was told that she'd miscarried the child. But even though he held her close giving her an opening, but it seemed she wasn't taking it. There were no tears, and there weren't going to be any. Not in his presence anyway. He sighed again a little frustrated. "I thought you wanted it too," Annabelle said her head leaning on his shoulder. "You seemed to care." Caleb sighed a bit, "Was just the wrong time darlin'. That's all. Couldn't afford it right now. Maybe when our works done . ." "But you loved me." She whispered, "You loved me when we conceived this baby. I felt it." He chuckled, "Of course I love you, sweetheart." He half laughed, "What sort of silly notion you got bumpin' around in that head of yours says I don't?" Annabelle didn't answer and Caleb slowly stroked her hair. "Honey . . . it's time to get to work." She didn't respond to him for a few moments. "No." She said softly. "Annabelle . . ." Caleb started to say, but his words were cut short. "I SAID NO!!" She roared causing the door of the bedroom to crack as it was shoved hard into the wall, and the windows shattered with such force the glass shards flew outward at least 30 feet from the house. Caleb's eyes went wide when he felt the force come from Annabelle. It was intense and felt like a million volts of electricity. He looked at her surprised at her reaction. But she didn't look back at him, breathe a word or respond. "Annabelle, calm down." He said looking at her, She raised her hand to her face and covered her eyes. "Darlin' you've got to stay in control now. You can't just let your temper blow." To be honest, he wasn't aware she had a temper like this. "Look at me." Another moment passed before Annabelle looked up at Caleb. Her eyes turned completely mirror silver. It took him a second to adjust to it, it was very startling to see. "Just breathe sweetheart." He said, "Annabelle, can you hear me?" Caleb asked. "Yes." She said in a voice that seemed to echo in on itself. His voice changed when he merged with the First, but not like this. His became deeper and two voices spoke not just one. "Are you . . . are you in control?" Caleb asked careful not to move trying not to set her off. "Not very much," She answered honestly. "I can see you, Caleb. I can see you inside. I can see all the darkness, all the black decay." Caleb just stared at her wide-eyed. "I can see where it's cut a place into your soul for itself, your secrets, your pains, everything." "She's made the transformation." The First said appearing in the corner of the dark room. "Can you feel her power. It comes off her in waves." It said with a pleased smirk. Annabelle could feel all sorts of new sensations, feelings, vibrations, waves, even the earth moving below the Vineyard. Slowly she turned and stared at the creature standing nearby. "I can see you too. The real you, beyond the forms you take, the disguises you wear . . your ambitions . . . the lies you tell." "You have seers eyes now. You must learn to control them." The First replied. "It's the first and strongest of your abilities that opens the way to all of your others." "And you wish to be my teacher." Annabelle said her voice still not her own. "Who else will teach you? Your power is new, strong, unpredictable. I can help you learn how to use it, control it, wield it like a sword. You'll be invincible, Annabelle. You and Caleb will be the Gods of this world. My world." It said. "This is what you been preparin' for darlin'. All the pain, all the trails, all your hard work. You're ready to become It's student. Let It help you." Caleb said his arm still around her waist as he whispered into her ear. "So? Are you ready to discover the new you?" The first asked. Annabelle was silent for a moment starring at the creature. "I think you've 'helped' us enough." She raised her hand towards It and a huge pulse wave of light came from her palm blowing the creatures incorporeal form through the wall out of their sight. "ANNABELLE!!" Caleb said in astonishment and horror and started to grab her. However she turned towards him first, pressing her hand over his chest and another light came from her hand, so bright you could see through him like an x-ray machine. He gasped and fell backwards flat on the bed blacked out. Annabelle looked at him for a moment before leaning over him holding his shoulders. Then the silver in her eyes seemed to turn to liquid like Mercury. A flash of light and she and Caleb disappeared, like they had never been there.
