Faith didn’t know what had happened. She was almost in a panic. Seeing the look on Taunie’s face, and the way she’s just bolted, frightened the shit out of the darker Slayer. It was far too similar to those moments of panic and running when she’d been younger, and Faith remembered too well that the both of them had been compared as similar far too often. Taunie had gone down with Willow to get drinks during the halftime ruckus, the mascots of both schools enacting a strange, if amusing, NERF war mid-field. That hyper cheerleader had caught the girl’s attention, and after a word, Willow had gone on without her. Faith hadn’t gotten a chance to see much else of what had happened, the crowd being in the way, but when she’d started moving down, to interfere with the obvious flirtations of the cheer-girl, she’d seen Taunie’s reaction, and the presence of a second girl.
“Who the fuck are you and what did you say to her?” Faith wanted to pick the strange girl up and shake her, frighten her into revealing whatever information she had. Apparently her tone and angry look was enough to elicit some kind of reaction, for the blonde scoffed, backed a step, and stammered something too quietly to be heard over the crowd. Faith vaguely recognized the rival school’s cheerleading uniform. “Louder.” “I… she was just introducing us!” The girl pointed at the cheerleader that had apparently been stalking Taunie at school. “I just told her she was cute!” “I’ll find you if you’re lying.” Faith warned, eyes narrowed, and spun to run after the girl. She didn’t even contemplate if she was getting too close to that darker side of herself, instead worried over what had happened to her best friend. Faith found the bike where Taunie and Willow had left it, untouched, and spun rapidly from side to side, attempting to see where the girl had gone. There was no clue, not even a tingle of Slayer intuition, and Faith sat dejectedly on the little hybrid bike that Taunie loved so much. The sudden rumble of its engine startled her into jumping up, and she stared at the machine in surprise. She’d known for a long time that the bike was special. She’d known since Taunie had told her everything that the bike had come directly from the Powers, and was more than special. She hadn’t known, however, that it was partially sentient. “I can’t find Taunie.” There seemed to be no reaction. “Something’s wrong. I can’t find Taunie, your rider, and something’s wrong with her.” The slightest sputter could be heard over the crowd yelling, and Faith straddled the seat, hoping that it had been acceptance. “Turn on.” Once again, the bike seemed to possess no reaction, and Faith gripped the handle bars, ready to argue with what would be an inanimate object anywhere other than Sunnydale. The bike suddenly squealing its tires, revving, and shooting backwards left Faith desperately clinging to its handles and struggling for balance. When there was a slight shift in the sound of its guttural rumble, Faith barely realized that the gears had switched, and clenched her teeth against it starting forward again. Desperately, she turned the handles to be able to turn the bike, and ended up burning a donut as it spun before managing to shoot off and to the street. The slightest lean of the bike was her only indication of where to turn her aim toward, and when she vaguely recognized a figure running desperately along the sidewalk, she was barely able to control the screeching stop the thing had come to. “T! Taunie!” Her cry didn’t stop the girl, and Faith had to stumble off of the crazy bike to go chasing after the girl. “Nataunia!” The use of her full name helped. Taunie stumbled slightly, enough for Faith to catch up, and fell to her knees sobbing. Faith was barely able to catch her before she would have cracked her kneecaps on the pavement. It was an awkward several minutes as the brunette slayer held her, attempting to get her to calm down or tell her what was wrong. She didn’t get much in the way of answers, but she did manage to get Taunie calm enough to walk the bike back to the house. The continued crying, gasping, and panic that resulted there, once she’d dragged Taunie to the couch and asked what was wrong, gave Faith no further insight. The girl had barely calmed enough to curl onto her side, eyes wide with panic, when Willow arrived through the door. “What happened? Buffy said both of you just ran off, one after the other.” Willow asked, concern and slight annoyance in her voice. As the redhead caught sight of the girl, she paled. “What happened?!” “I dunno, Red. She’s just… been like this since I found her. She can’t talk… just starts gasping and sobbing every time she tries.” Faith whispered, staring down at her friend in shock. “I… what the fuck am I supposed to do? Is she possessed? Do you think something stole her voice or something? You guys said there were demons that could make you sing and dance, or even steal your voice completely… did this happen?” “Faith, I think something just frightened her.” Willow whispered, scooting onto the couch nearby and attempting to get Taunie to look up at them. “She hasn’t been able to say anything?” “No.” Faith whispered, settling a protective, concerned hand on the girl’s shoulder. “I… I dunno what to do, Red.” “We wait, and try to keep her calm. When she’s ready, she’ll tell us if she can.” Willow sighed, a look of sadness and concern overcoming her face as she looked down at Taunie. “I’m going to get her some water, and we’ll just try to keep her company until she’s ready to say something. Just stroke her hair or back, I’ll be back in a minute.” ~ “I’m sorry.” Taunie whispered, curled sadly around her warm cup of tea. When she’d started shivering, Willow had thought it best to have a hot drink ready, and as they had oddly run out of hot cocoa, had defaulted to something Giles would suggest. After the initial sips, Taunie had seemed to forget the drink’s purpose, instead staring down into it as if there were leaves to read, eyes a little wide. “It’s okay… we’re just worried.” Willow rested a hand comfortingly on the girl’s shoulder, but Nataunia still wouldn’t look up. “What happened?” “Ghost from the past…” Taunie’s whisper sounded haunted this time, instead of just pained, and both of the others stared at each other in alarm. “I… er… I mean I just… saw someone. She looked a lot like… someone I used to know. I’m sorry.” Faith’s expression only dipped into more worry, knowing a bit more about how, and why, that would panic Nataunia. Oddly, despite being coherent, the girl only seemed to be getting more worried and twitchy. Willow sighed, and gently rubbed Taunie’s back. “Don’t apologize.” She murmured, clueless as to how she could help her apprentice, and glancing in confused curiosity at Faith. “Did it look like her?” Faith finally asked, making Taunie flinch, and splash the tea a bit. The darker slayer seemed to only get angrier, worry increasing. “It wasn’t her, T. You told me that… that… You know it wasn’t actually her. I… nothing like that is going to happen here.” “What are you talking…” Willow whispered, looking a little horrified. “I know, Faith.” Taunie said softly, interrupting Willow, her voice a little gravelly. “I know… I just… I panicked.” She swallowed and carefully put the cup of lukewarm liquid down, her cautious movements a little exaggerated. “I think… I think I just need to sleep this off… I just gotta… sleep.” Willow and Faith both noticed her absently rubbing at the scar on her wrist, and Faith let out a slow, worried breath, her anger not really leaving her. If it weren’t for Taunie having insisted, so much, that they weren’t the same people- and her need to believe that herself- she likely would have gone dark-slayer on that damn cheerleader. They watched as she shakily got up, and Faith helped her to the basement, insisting on Taunie taking her bed instead of the cot. Her worry wasn’t help when the girl didn’t even argue or glare as she usually would have in response to that. Instead, Taunie just sat there, head in her hands, mumbling about how it just hurt seeing that face, hearing those words in that voice. Reluctantly, when Taunie shrugged her away for the third time, Faith moved back upstairs, wishing that she could just go out and beat on some vampires or something. It was still daylight, though, so she could only fidget with her nervous, worried energy and anger. Willow was sitting in the kitchen, looking little better than Faith, though her expression was definitely more confused. She had seen for herself the condition Taunie was in, and apparently knew how to handle it better than Faith had, but the reasons were still beyond her. After Faith paced the length of the kitchen for the third time, having rounded the livingroom and dining room twice as well, Willow cleared her throat. “Faith…” The brunette jumped, startled, and stared at Willow in a mixture of worry and anger. “Faith… please sit down.” It took a moment of silent, anxious glaring, but the Slayer finally sat, knee bouncing. “She’ll… probably be fine, Faith. It’ll take a bit of time, but she’s a strong girl.” Faith nodded in silent agreement, running a shaking hand through her hair. The young woman was not used to this kind of thing. “What… who were you two talking about Faith? Please.” “A girl.” Faith ground out, clenching her fists before letting out a long breath. “Her ex. She… she really fucked with Taunie’s head, Red. More than the girl likes to admit, yanno? She hasn’t explained everything, but what I know… well she fucked with T’s head. That girl she saw today… she…” Faith hedged, hesitating and attempting to explain it without giving Taunie’s secret away. “Well, I guess you could say the chick could’a been her twin. She ain’t dealt with it, not enough, not long enough ago, to see that. Prolly just shock or somethin’. Better damn well just be shock. I’ll go dark slayer on that bitch look-a-like’s ass if it’s not just shock.” “Faith…” Willow chided, and the Slayer actually managed to calm down a little, to the witch’s surprise. The redhead looked worriedly in the direction of the basement door. The scar had never escaped her attention, nor the way that Taunie seemed to worry at it whenever stress from her past arose. Was that how badly the girl had “fucked with Taunie’s head?” Were there any knives or blades downstairs? Would Taunie really even need such, considering she had the ability to grow her own claws? “Do you know what all was said between them?” “Nah… just… that cheer-girl tried to introduce them. Prolly friends or some shit.” Faith growled, then fidgeted again. “Taunie freaked when the chick called her cute.” “She does seem skittish with attention like that most of the time.” Willow contemplated, and watched as Faith seemed to get more nervous. “Listen, Red, this is kinda… her business, yanno. I probably shouldn’t’a even told you much as I did without talkin’ to her first.” Faith swallowed hard. “It’s just… it’s got to do with how things were before, and seein’ this chick. I’m… I’m gonna go bring the car back to the school so B an’ the Squirt can get back.” She swallowed and fidgeted again. “Just keep an eye on ‘er, eh?” Willow watched as Faith nervously ran out. Likely the brunette was just trying to keep from spilling out everything she knew simply from the nerves. Undoubtedly Faith would be back again as soon as she’d dropped the keys with Buffy. Sighing, Willow just wished the girl had shared half as much with her as she did with Faith. Perching herself near enough the door to hear Taunie if the girl needed her, she flipped through some of her notes and books, trying to put together enough information on her own to be able to at least eventually help.TBC
