Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: As always the wonderful Bubbysbub deserves all the praise for good grammar and spelling
Feedback: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I’ll get on my knees and beg for feedback both good and bad
Part: 17/?
Distribution: Ask and you will receive
Warnings: Mild violence and the normal language warning
Reviews: Ri - Glad you're enjoying, I only update once a week because with my RL and my beta's RL we can't commit to a smaller deadline, sorry though, hope you continue to read and enjoy as the story continues.
Daeomae - Oh yes Lilah and Lindsey are in trouble but I think you'll find that they still have a couple of aces up there collective sleeves (remember Angel still doesn't know about Darla). Glad the action was to your taste and yes Angel's faith in Spike is strong but I think you'll find that by the end of the chapter not everyone has such strong faith in Spike. Hope you enjoy and thanks for all the fantastic feedback.
A/N: A big thanks to Jenn for allowing me to use some of her ideas evident in Playing Games. Buffyworld is back! A big thanks to Howard Russell for bringing such a wonderful resource back online
Chapter Seventeen
Angel strolled back downstairs telling those he met to gather in the lobby now and to spread the word. He hadn’t seen his lover’s since he got back, and he desperately needed to talk to them. But some things came first, and being prepared for those interfering Watcher’s was one of those. He was surprised to find Gunn sitting in a wheelchair when he arrived in the lobby but was more surprised to find him deep in conversation with Faith. Angel hoped that Faith was aware of the dagger looks they were receiving from Wesley who was pretending to read a book. They didn’t need complications of the heart, Angel thought, they had enough complications as it was.
Spike and Xander came out of the basement and a second lot of daggers were being shot at Faith. At least Spike wasn’t actively trying to antagonise her, Xander must have talked to him Angel decided. The next moment he was thinking of nothing at all as warm lips latched onto his and he pulled Xander as close as possible, feeling the human’s warmth seep into his cool body. Cooled arms embraced Angel from behind and he leaned into Spike. Smelling his lovers combined scent Angel felt a weight lifting off of his shoulders when he had them around him, surrounding him.
“Um Angel, was there a reason you called us down here?” Cordelia’s voice broke through the three lovers thoughts and they detangled reluctantly.
“Sorry if you’re nails need to wait five minutes princess, but we have a delegate of British wankers coming and I for one want them gone before they even get here.” Spike snarled sitting on the couch and pulling the other two down with him. Angel looked around and saw Faith fidgeting, standing by herself separated from everyone else, still in her prison uniform. For them to survive, they would all need to work together which meant making Faith part of the group.
“First thing’s first, Faith I don’t think you know everyone.” Angel stopped for a minute looking around, he couldn’t just introduce Faith to Wesley or Cordelia or Xander, there was too much past history there and he didn’t know if Faith knew Tara or had met Spike before. “Next to Willow is Tara, the two of them did some magic so it’s unlikely that the law will be looking for you,”
“Yeah, we’ve met before,” Faith acknowledged, “I’m sorry about those things I said BTW, It looks like you and Willow have a good thing going on.” Faith offered in apology, Tara just smiled one of her small shy smiles in response.
“In the wheelchair is Gunn, one of my team here in LA.”
“Yeah we already chatted,” Gunn told Angel while nodding at Faith.
“Great, and this is Spike, I know the two of you have heard quite a bit about each other but I don’t think you’ve actually met.”
“We met once.” Faith spoke quietly.
“Wot? No we haven’t,” Spike disagreed.
“I was kinda wearing a different body.”
“The body swap. With…” Spike was unable to voice her name with all her friends around them as well as his lovers, who were still grieving for both her and Giles.
“She fill you in on that whole deal?” Faith asked curious and for a moment forgetting about everyone else around them.
“She told me it went down. I knew you were around, this one was looking for you,” Spike indicated Xander. He remembered that their thing had only just started and Xander was having a meltdown at the realisation that he was gay and that he was in a relationship with a vampire, so he hadn’t come out to his friends yet. When Spike had bumped into Xander and Giles the night they were looking for Faith, they had to pretend they hated each other and that was when Xander decided that he couldn’t keep lying to everyone. Course it took another month before he actually came out to his friends but it was the start.
“I may have said a few things...”
“Like you could ride me at a gallop 'til my knees buckle, squeeze me 'til I pop like warm champagne. That's not the kind of thing a man forgets. But I was taken then and I’m still taken now and that’s not gonna change,” Spike warned pulling Xander closer and resting a hand on Angel’s thigh.
“I can see that, I must admit I was surprised but it seems to be working for all three of you so I’m happy for you, all three of you. You deserve to be happy, well not too happy on Angel’s part.” Spike nodded his acceptance of her apology and decided that he might like this Slayer being around after all.
“Right, now we have a Watcher’s delegation to plan for…” Angel began and they spent the next few hours planning the next morning.
******
Finally they were organised for the next morning and Angel was leading his lovers back to their suite of rooms, they had some decisions that needed to be made. Spike and Xander could tell that something was up with Angel so they were following along behind trying to work out what was on Angel’s mind. Once in their rooms, Angel poured whiskey into three tumblers and handed them to the other two before taking a sip from own glass.
“What’s wrong Angel,” Xander asked staring at his glass, he rarely drank due to his past experiences with his parents, so he wanted to know what was happening before he took a drink.
“Nothing’s wrong as such, I just don’t know how you both will react and I don’t want to lose either one of you.” Angel explained and Xander became even more worried.
“Didn’t you listen to what I told the Slayer downstairs, I’m not going anywhere and I’m not letting either of you go without a hell of a fight so tell us what you’re talking about and we’ll get through it.” Angel placed his drink on the table and then turned to talk to his lovers.
“After we got Faith, we were being followed. After some threatening I found out that they were from Wolfram and Hart. Somehow they had found out that I’m with the two of you and they were following me trying to work out why William the Bloody is with a souled lummox like me. As well as find out who Xander is and how he fits in.”
“They were bound to find out that Xander and I lived here at some point Angel. We knew the danger when we decided to move here. They’ll come and we’ll stop them, simple as that.” Spike walked over to Angel and wrapped his arms around his Sire, offering comfort.
“They’re human Spike, with guns. If they got the two of you alone, two against a squad, ‘specially when you can’t hurt any of them, they’d get you and I couldn’t deal with that.” Spike suddenly felt very insecure, he hated being reminded of his weakness, of how he was defenceless as a snail against humans. Angel picked up on it and he stopped Spike withdrawing further away.
“When I got home, I went and talked to Dr Phillips, I’ve looked into it before but it’s always seemed so risky and I didn’t want you hurt but the Doctor assures me that he can do it, and I want you whole again.” Angel cupped Spike’s cheek in his palm and looked deep into Spike’s eyes. “You’re my favourite childe and I want you whole.” He whispered before taking Spike’s lips.
Xander watched them, feeling apprehensive. He knew where Angel was coming from, he wanted Spike safe but he didn’t know if he could cope with Spike killing. Without the chip Spike and Xander would never have gotten together and no matter how much Xander wanted Spike to be able to defend himself and didn’t want him collapsing on the floor in pain anymore, he also didn’t want Spike out there killing defenceless people, people who Xander had spent the last five years of his life trying to protect.
Spike was in shock. Angel had arranged for his chip to be taken out, he would be free. But no, he wouldn’t be free, everything had changed, he had changed since the chip had been implanted into his head and Spike didn’t think that he could be the carefree killer he had been before the initiative. He could hear Xander’s heart beating faster, could smell the mixed emotions coming from his lover and knew that Xander could not live with Spike killing again. Spike knew that it must have been hard for Angel to come to this decision. Spike knew that if he killed humans he would lose both his lovers but in different ways. Angel who had been a soulless killer, who knew what being a vampire was all about would kick Spike out if he killed but would not be able to stake Spike himself, they would revert back to how they had treated each other for the last hundred years.
Well, how they would have without Xander in the mix. Xander the white knight, the human. Spike knew that if he started to kill humans after the chip was out that Xander would come after him. Xander would stake him, Xander who still worked mostly in black and white. Xander would be destroyed if he staked Spike and Spike knew that he would probably end his own life afterwards, but that wouldn’t stop Xander doing what he saw as the right thing.
Angel could sense that Spike’s mind was elsewhere so he let go of Spike’s lips and peered into brilliantly blue eyes. Angel sent a brief prayer to whoever was listening that he wouldn’t lose either of his lovers before he spoke.
“Tell me what you’re thinking, little one,” Angel requested, and felt a fission of fear snake up his spine as Spike buried his head in Angel’s shoulder.
“Xander come here,” Spike held out his hand for Xander to take wanting both of them to be close enough that he could judge their reactions while he talked to them. Once Xander was wrapped around them with Spike in the middle, his head still hiding in Angel’s shoulder he began to speak.
“I’ve hated this stupid chip but two things came out of it that I wouldn’t change for anything, the two of you. I know you’re both scared that once I get my bite back I’ll start biting and killing. I can’t deny that it’s in my nature and for so long the chip was the only thing stopping me but now I’ve got something else stopping me, the knowledge that by sinking my fangs into another human I would be killing this relationship, which is not going to happen.” Spike finally raised his head and looked at both of the brown eyed beauties in front of him. They smiled at him with relief in their eyes, and Angel glanced down at his watch.
“Spike if you want to do this, it needs to be done now, the Watcher’s will be here in a few hours and Dr Phillips said it shouldn’t take long but I want to make sure it works before they get here.”
“Now?” Spike asked, suddenly apprehensive, he didn’t like the idea of someone working inside his head again but if it was the only way he would be back to his old strength then he would do it.
“We’ll be with you, won’t we Angel?” Xander reassured his lover.
“Yes, we’ll be there the entire time, Dr Phillips said that he could do it with only a local anaesthetic if you won’t move a muscle or speak during the entire operation, its very important, he explained it all to me, I wouldn’t have even suggested it to you if it wasn’t perfectly safe,” Angel reassured Spike as they left their quarters and made their way back down to the makeshift surgery. Dr Phillips greeted them at the door and ushered them inside. Xander could see why they had chosen this room instead of the carpet, it had floorboard, well the little bit of floor he could see peeking between two tarps looked like floorboards but the whole floor was now covered in tarps with a silver trolley containing numerous instruments in one corner and a hospital type bed in the middle of the room.
“Okay now Spike if you will lie down on the bed and Angel and Xander you can stay over in the corner where Spike can see you but please no talking all three of you. This is a complicated neurological procedure.”
“Little performance anxiety, eh doc?” Spike asked, all confident swagger, hiding his nervousness, well, hoping he’d hid it from the doctor because Spike knew he wasn’t fooling his lovers and he didn’t want to. He liked it that he didn’t always have to be the confident bad boy with them. Still talking Spike took off his jacket and sat on the operating table. “Butterflies in the old belly? It's not so complicated. Just do whatever those Initiative lab monkeys did, only backwards.” Angel found a seat to sit on where he is still in Spike’s range of vision and pulled Xander onto his lap.
“It’s a bit more complicated than that but yes, when this is over, I will be able to hand you that little piece of metal that has plagued your life these last couple of years. Now just lie back and I’ll just give you the local.” After one last glance at his lover’s Spike layed back on the operating table.

“I read in a magazine that some women think a man's real sex organ is his brain.” Xander had been sitting there quietly on Angel’s lap for what seemed like hours while he was becoming more and more anxious every millisecond, it finally came to a point where he had to speak to let some of the tension out. Even Angel’s fingers tracing meaningless patterns on his thigh couldn’t distract Xander any longer. Xander thought about what he had just said and then continued.
“Yecch! No contest. I mean, when Buffy ended up with that brain in her hands in High School, I couldn’t touch them for a month.”
Suddenly Dr Phillips spoke from behind Spike’s head. “I see the chip! It's nestled in there but give me a couple of minutes and I should…” He trailed off as he bent over Spike’s head while Spike attempted to not move while Xander and Angel looked on, hoping against hope that he could get it without any problems.
“The chip's out.” The doctor finally told them “Just give me a couple of minutes to stich you back up Spike and then you can go and fight humans.”
Spike didn’t say a word and Angel and Xander, hugging each other close, couldn’t help but worry that Spike would go back on his promise now that he truly had his bite back. ‘How can a vampire go against his very nature?’ Xander wondered, too busy to hear Dr Phillips tell Spike that he could get up and go. However, Xander did see Spike jump up in full game face and stalk straight at him, letting out dangerous vibes that Xander hasn’t felt from Spike in a very long time. As he stalked closer, Xander couldn’t help but feel a little afraid. ‘What if the last couple of years were a lie, an elaborate game to get a human to look after him and keep the Slayer off his back?’ Xander wondered.
