Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: My absolutely fantastic beta Bubbysbub took time out on her birthday to beta this so please if you see her wandering the fanfic filled rooms thank her.

Chapter Sixteen
Wesley was in the driver’s seat of Angel’s prize car; he had performed the spell to wipe the video cameras of everything they recorded for the day and so he was the logical candidate to drive the getaway vehicle as his part of the magic was done. Willow and Tara sat in the back chanting Tabula Rasa and burning some nettle to make the entire jail forget they had ever seen Faith. It would hopefully take the authorities weeks for them to realise Faith was missing and with nobody in the jail that Faith had resided in for the last few years remembering her, they would hopefully decide that the whole thing was some big mix up.
Suddenly glass shattered over the bonnet and two bodies landed right in front of the car. Wesley turned the key in the ignition as the girls chanting stepped up a notch and Angel and Faith jumped into the car. Wesley took off with a screech of tires as a crystal in Willow’s hand turned green and they stopped chanting.
“Here,” Willow passed the crystal to Angel, “as long as the crystal is green the spell holds.” She told him before slumping back in her seat exhausted. Tara curled around her and dozed off, the spell having taken quite a bit out of both of them. Faith looked from one person to the other confused.
“What the hell is going on here?” She asked confused and grateful that they had sprung her out, but confused as to why. Before anyone could give her answers Wesley broke in.
“Angel, I think we have a situation. I’m positive we’re being followed and I think its Wolfram and Hart.” Wesley glanced in the rear vision mirror watching the van one lane over and two cars behind them who had been following them since near the jail.
“Why do you think its Wolfram and Hart?” Willow asked opening her eyes, she didn’t think she’d be much use to them in shaking the other car off; the spell had taken more out of her than she thought it would.
“Who else in LA would drive around in a dark van with the windows tinted and know enough to not follow directly behind us.” Wesley replied.
“Um, anyone who has watched too many action flicks,” Faith replied while turning around and studying the van in question. Angel was studying the van too and now, looking around and recognising where they were, a plan forming in his mind.
“Whoever it is, I don’t like that they’re following us and I want to know why they are and who they are, there’s too many players as it is, I want to know if someone knew is coming to play. Wesley, turn at the next left.” Angel told them.
“Angel, what the hell is going on?” Faith demanded answers, she hated being in the dark.
“Wait til we get back to the hotel, I can’t explain now.” Angel told her then he addressed Wesley again. “Take this sharp right, then the left and stop straight away,” he commanded. They screeched round the last corner and stopped abruptly. As Angel had hoped, the van following them came round the corner behind them and overshot them. Angel jumped out of the car and glanced over at Faith.
“Ready for a fight?” He asked as Wesley grabbed the collapsible crossbow out of the glove compartment.
“Yeah, haven’t been in a decent brawl for a while,” Faith commented as she jumped out of the car. The van suddenly took off but Wesley had anticipated it and shot two arrows, one puncturing each of the back tires effectively stopping the van. Angel was suddenly at the back doors of the van and he ripped them open, not happy that these cowards would rather run than confront them after following them. Inside were two men and quite a bit of quite expensive surveillance equipment. The men stare at him in shock, one had a gun but he was shaking so hard that the aim was all over the place. Angel took a deep breathe of the fear-scented air as he heard the door to the cabin open. He didn’t need to give chase to whoever was driving the van because a couple of moments later Faith came into view with an unconscious black-clad man in her arms. The man was dumped into the back of the van and Angel smiled as the fear scent increased, now tinged with the scent of urine. Finally Angel spoke after giving the captives time to imagine their own worst fears. Angel learnt a long time ago that what humans come up with themselves is always more potent than any torture he could dream up.
“Who do you work for?” He asked and they stared at him, too scared of their employees to answer. “Wrong answer,” Angel growled eyes turning yellow and fangs elongating. The petrified men turned to Faith, pleading with their eyes. Faith just shrugged and leaned up against the door, the very picture of nonchalance. Angel moved vampire quick and the gun was in his hand, the men flinched as he let off a shot straight into one of their computers.
“Now let’s try this again, shall we. Who do you work for?” Angel menaced. They pleaded to Faith and she laughed.
“I’d listen to him you know, cos if it was up to me, you’d already be in a world of pain.” Faith threatened and hoped that Angel knew it was just talk, she wasn’t like that anymore. Angel cocked the gun and pointed it at the unconscious driver, silent, but the threat evident in his eyes. After long moments the man who had peed his pants cracked.
“Wolfram and Hart. We work for Wolfram and Hart.” He told them, knowing that his life was now forfeit and calculating how quickly he could get over the border into Mexico.
“Thankyou, now here’s the big question. What were your orders and who gave you your orders?” Angel demanded. He opened his mouth to answer but his friend yelled at him first.
“Don’t tell them, you know that Wolfram and Hart will terminate you if you tell them.” He yelled, petrified for his friend.
“And if I don’t tell them, they will shoot us right now; I’d rather be shot later than shot now thankyou very much.” He turned back to Angel and told him, “Our orders were to follow you, record your moments but most importantly find out why William the Bloody and a brown haired twenty something’s Caucasian male are living with you and your relationship to them.” Faith started at the description of Xander and the innuendo in the surveillance guys’ voice. ‘What on earth was going on?’ She wondered. Angel clenched his fists trying to keep his anger under control. They had been spying on Spike and Xander, on his boys! They deserved to die, but he reigned in that impulse as much as possible.
“Who gave you your orders?” he growled and the surveillance team cowered back even more terrified.
“L… Lilah Morgan and Lindsey McDonald,” he stuttered hoping he would make it through this encounter alive.
“Those two are still around?” Faith asked surprised, remembering them from when they hired her to kill Angel.
“Not for long,” Angel promised.

“Tell me,” Spike requested. Spike and Xander were in the basement clearing out the boxes and getting a training space set up. Xander still hadn’t told Spike his past history with Faith and Spike was getting increasingly frustrated. Xander turned to Spike hoping his lover would drop it but knowing that it probably wouldn’t happen.
“Spike, its ancient history, water under the bridge, please let it go. I’m with you now, the past doesn’t matter.” Xander rubbed against Spike hoping to distract him but Spike gently pushed him away.
“Oh no you don’t. If the past doesn’t matter, why did you go through all the Watcher’s Diaries to find out about my ex’s?” Spike asked raising an eyebrow.
“That… That was different,” Xander protested but Spike just stared at him unyielding until Xander sighed.
“Fine, fine, I’ll tell you but sit down please, you’re probably not going to like it.” Xander told him, pulling Spike down to the cold basement floor and getting settled leaning against the hard stone wall. Xander didn’t know that he was leaning on the wall that Spike had been thoroughly fucked against the day before, but Spike did and he spared a thought for Angel now off on his jail break mission.
“It was my Senior Year at Sunnydale High, you’d already been and gone so Cordelia had broken up with me and Willow was trying to get back in Oz’s good books. Basically it wasn’t a good time for me, I had all those zeppo issues we talked about a while back, remember?”
“I remember pet,” Spike answered snuggling up into Xander’s shoulder. Spike hated that Xander had felt so useless and hadn’t had anyone looking out for him when he was going through such a hard time.
“Right well remember how I told you how while everyone else was off stopping the hellmouth being opened again, I stopped a group of zombies blowing up the school.”
“Yeah pet, I do. It helped you realise you weren’t so useless, which you’re not.” Spike hugged Xander to him. He had been so proud of Xander when he told him and really touched that he was the first person Xander had ever told. It was something he didn’t think that even Angel knew about Xander. It didn’t matter because Angel had already found out about Xander’s hidden bravery, had witnessed it first hand when Xander had stood up to Angelus in a hospital corridor not even armed with a stake.
“Thanks Spike, I know. Anyway earlier that night I came across Faith being pummelled by one of the demons who were trying to open the hellmouth so I ran over it then offered her a lift. We got back to her hotel room and she was worse than you when you’ve been in a fight.” Spike tensed and started to growl, he knew how bad he got sometimes after a good fight; it got hard to remember his partner when he got like that.
“It wasn’t anything I didn’t want, she was there, a beautiful girl who wanted me, well wanted me in that moment and I was heavily into denial land when it came to how I felt about guys so I let her, was an active participant. Afterwards, she didn’t waste any time before kicking me out and that was the only time we were together. I promise Spike.” Xander looked at Spike pleadingly, hoping that he wouldn’t react badly.
“Okay pet, so you’re telling me Demon Girl upstairs wasn’t your first? And what you told me still doesn’t explain what the Cheerleader said.”
“No Faith was my first, but it was only once the same with Anya and they’re the only women I’ve slept with, but you know you were my first male, the first person who was inside me and that felt more like my first time than anything that happened before.” Xander kissed Spike, silently thanking him for that experience.
Spike finally broke the kiss. “Still haven’t answered my question luv, stop trying to distract me and just tell me.”
“About a month later Faith accidentally staked a man and she went through a serious case of denial. I went to confront her, thought that we shared a connection. She decided I was back for another go and then went on to tell me that she was powerful and could do anything she liked, she was really messed up. She told me that she could do anything to me and I wouldn’t be able to stop her. That’s when she started to strangle me, show me her power.” Xander doesn’t realise he is shaking, too caught up remembering how frightened he was when Faith was leaning over him cutting off his air supply and he was powerless to stop her.
“What happened pet?” Spike whispered in his ear, knowing that Xander needed to tell someone this, to get it out in the open.
“Angel saved me, he knew something was up and had been stalking Faith, watching her. He knocked her out with a shovel.” Xander grabbed Spike and held him close, needing the comfort. “Promise me you won’t try to go after Faith, she was so messed up and she has changed. She sent me a letter of apology just after she had turned herself in. I’ve forgiven her, even if I didn’t reply.” Xander pleaded, he mostly loved Spike’s overprotective nature but they needed Faith. If they had any chance of defeating Glory they would need a Slayer on their side.
Spike had to think about it for a while, he didn’t give Xander promises that he wouldn’t keep so he had to be sure that he could keep the promise. He knew strategy wise that another super powered individual would help their odds. Xander seemed to be willing to give Faith another chance and Spike knew all about second chances what with his and Angel’s relationship.
“Okay pet, I promise, on one condition, she leaves you alone. If she hurts you at all her life is forfeit chip or no chip.” Xander smiled, knowing that that was the best he would get from Spike.

Angel pulled into the underground carpark, desperate to talk to Dr Phillips before he left. Faith was apprehensive of seeing these people again; apart from Angel, no one had said two words to her. Not that she blamed them, she had tortured Wesley, could still hear his screams if she closed her eyes. Willow, she had held a knife to Willow’s throat, kidnapped her to force a trade. And Tara, well the one time she had met Tara she had been extremely insulting, not a good way to make new friends.
Now she had to make nice with the others but Angel had warned her off Spike and Xander. After they had tied the Wolfram and Hart employees up in their van and left, Angel had explained that he was seeing both Spike and Xander. Faith was happy for him, glad he had found happiness of a sort. Angel had been very specific that if she went near Xander she would have to deal with Angel if Spike didn’t tear her apart first. He had told her that Xander was only telling Spike of his past with her now and it would probably be a good idea to steer clear of the blonde vampire altogether. Yep, redemption was hard.
Angel found Dr Phillips cleaning up his things from the makeshift surgery.
“Don’t pack up; I have another job for you, if you think you can do it.” Dr Phillips turned around and smiled at Angel, he had wondered if Angel was going to come to him but he showed no indication of this to Angel.
“What’s the job?” he asked. Angel paused for a minute, trying to decide if he was doing the right thing. He thought of Wolfram and Hart sniffing around, of the threat of Glory, of the Watcher’s Council on their way, and of Faith. Yes, he should have done something about this a long time ago.
“What do you know about military behaviour modification chips?” Angel asked, closing the door behind himself so that no one else would hear this conversation.
