Author’s Note: I made a few major changes to the game file, but just briefly touch on them in the story. Part of the change required rkimmelerre to repurchase combat skills. His choices:
Buffy: Warrior, Martial Artist, Archer
Xander: Archer
Willow: Look Out (Perception)
Tara: Look Out (Perception)

The first thing Xander noticed was that Buffy wasn’t in the library. She wasn’t a friend or a party member after the cards his opponent played, so he guessed that meant she wasn’t going to be present.

He thought about asking Willow about it, but knew the first thing he was going to do was get Buffy back, so no reason to risk waste time on something he was going to fix.

He turned his eyes to the screen for the turn’s event:

Training: A group known as the Watchers have appeared and offered to provide you with some training. They offer the following options:

Xander Undergoes Full Watcher Training - Xander spends time training with the Watchers. He gains two levels of the trainer battle ability and the money trait. This costs 2 actions, however Xander's improved organization means you will get an additional action on every turn for the rest of the game.
Slayer Training Buffy - Buffy gains a level of warrior, +3 to athletics and combat, 3 experience points, but loses 7 actions.
Xander Receives Researcher Training - Use their help to expand your library. Your base's research improved by 6, Xander gains the Smart trait. This takes one action.
Xander Takes Magic Lessons - Use their help to improve your magic training facilities, base magic improved by 6 and Xander becomes able to use magic. This takes one action.
Improve Training Facilities - Improve your combat training facilities. Both athletics and combat base training is improved by 3.

Xander took a moment to mull over the options. He tossed Slayer Training out right away, he needed to get Buffy back and so couldn’t have her losing so many actions. The magic lessons were interesting; it would make training Tara and Willow easier and would add magic to his own skill set. The general bonus to training facilities also sounded like a nice idea.

In the end though he decided to take the Full Watcher Training. Losing two actions right now was brutal, but he hoped it would pay off in the long run.

“Okay, five actions,” Xander said as he thought over his options. He looked to Willow and Tara, “What are the biggest issues facing us?”

“We have to make up with Buffy,” Willow replied.

“She’s right,” Tara said. “The vampires are growing in numbers and we can’t deal with them without her.”

“Yeah, that. Plus, sex,” Willow added in.

“Buffy, vampires, sex,” Xander replied. He didn’t have a lot of actions, so that made his path pretty clear.

He took a bit to review Buffy’s character sheet and the options to improve her friendship:
You have a friendship rating of 20 with Buffy, a social difficulty of 5, and a standing of 74.
6: Casual Interaction: You will have a very basic interaction and improve your standing by 10
15: Regular Interaction: You will have a positive meeting and improve your standing by 21
30: Friendly Interaction: You will have a very friendly time with Buffy and improve your standing by 31
60: Great Interaction: You will have an amazing event and improve your standing by 44

100: Joins the Party: The character will become a permanent member of your party.

He had a fair number of points, but wasn’t sure how many he’d need later in the turn. Plus, Buffy had only one action. Being friendly with her would mean he would have to restore her if he wanted to do anything else.

So he went to Willow’s character and used her ‘Befriend Good’ to improve the relationship with Buffy. It meant that he wouldn’t be able to use Willow again this turn, but he didn’t think that was going to come up.

He went back to Buffy’s sheet and saw the join cost had changed substantially and he took it:
25: Joins the Party: The character will become a permanent member of your party.

He was still in trouble though with Buffy, she had 141 stress. As he looked around at his other options that seemed to prevent her from training and really weakened her in combat. He first took one use of Tara’s “Good Company” skill which reduced stress for all party members by five. He had the option to take it a second time, but he had another idea in mind.

He took a moment to go and look at his own character sheet:

Funny: Great at cracking jokes.
Money: Financial resources.
Freak: Not viewed as normal by everyone else.
Level 3 Buff: Body appears physically fit.
Level 4 Nice: Is kind and considerate to others.
Level 2 Viking in the Sack: Xander really knows what he is doing in bed. Sexual actions are even better for his partners and their stress reduction is increased.

He focused on the last trait. If it would help Buffy, he would do his part and have sex with her.

But why stop with just one girl? Instead of Buffy’s character, he went into the group sex option. Willow wasn’t available because she was out of actions, so he selected the two girls who were present: Buffy and Willow.

It cost him 23 Mojo and netted 33 points, but he was more interested in the stress benefits.

He looked up and noticed that not only had Buffy not entered the library, but Tara was not present either. Willow however was shooting him a very cross look.

“What?” he asked

“You know what you did,” she replied angrily.

“Uhm, I’m not sure…”

“Xander, do you know how much work I put into arranging things?”

“Listen, if this is about Buffy and Tara,” Xander said as he began to get an idea where this is leading, “I didn’t think you’d be angry.”

“Don’t think I’ll just forgive you for what happened,” Willow said as she got up and stormed away from the table.

Xander quickly went to Willow’s character sheet, worried that he had finally pushed the universe past its limit, but she was still listed as: Relationship: In Party - Best Friend - Girlfriend

“That’s strange,” Xander muttered. He’d have to try and make it up to her later, but first he had to finish the turn.

He had more points than he needed, so he decided to take a moment to improve things. His big concern was Buffy’s stress. It was down to 95, enough for him to get through this turn, but he really needed to keep it from shooting back up.

He couldn’t do anything about stress from combat or training, at least he hadn’t come across anything, but he could affect her reaction to homework. He purchased three levels of “Likes Books” and one more of “Student” for a total cost of 44 points. If that didn’t make her enjoy homework, nothing would.

He went down to vampires. He once again had to just let Snyder and the Popular Students go, he didn’t have enough actions to worry about them. There were 14 vampires, but the options were different than before:

Description: There are always vampires in Sunnydale and more vampires will generate each turn even if completely eliminated. Hunting vampires will reduce their overall number and the damage they do for this turn. If there is a vampire master in play he/she may change the vampire stats.

Fight
Single Enemy: Find and kill a single vampire, then call it a night. Will reduce their damage this turn by 15%.
Sweep: Take a quick sweep through the graveyard. Will eliminate 4 and reduce their damage this turn by 25%.
Patrol: Go through the dedicated routine of checking Sunnydale for vampires. Will eliminate 7, reduce their damage this turn by 50%.
Hunt: Have an intense effort to track down and eliminate vampires. Will eliminate 11, reduce their damage this turn by 80%.

The top portion hadn’t changed, but he wasn’t seeing point costs anymore. He selected patrol and was brought to a new screen:

Please set your party members between front lines and support.

“Great, I got a patch and they didn’t even mention it,” Xander mumbled. It wasn’t a very hard choice though. He put Buffy in the front, and everyone else in support. The end result was that it cost 0 points and only gained 6 stress. At least the patch hadn’t altered Buffy’s ability against vamps.

He still had plenty of points. He remembered that his choice at the beginning had resulted in him acquiring the money trait, so he went and bought the second level for 15. It said it would help with dates and he had a feeling he would go on more of those if they didn’t cost so much.

His last necessity was getting the grades up. He was at a C-, Buffy was at a D+, and even Tara had dropped to a B. With Snyder’s letter dropping power in effect, he needed to get those numbers up or detention would prevent them from being able to stop the evils of Sunnydale.

Study Actions: Studying will improve your grades, but gain stress. The stress gained is reduced by their student level and has a percentage change based on their likes/dislikes books trait.
0: Casual Study: A light study session, each friend improves their grade by 2 levels and gains 10 stress.
35: Normal Study: A study session, grades will go up 4 levels and stress by 25.
160: Intense Study: An intense study session, grades go up by two letter grades (6 levels), but stress increases by 60.

He only had 41 points, so it was an easy choice to go with normal study.

Your opponent has played Vampire Nests.

“Hmm, that’s not so bad,” Xander mumbled as the world began to darken. He could deal with vampires.

He also realized though that his opponent was probably just throwing things up to distract him until the Judge was able to attack.
