"There has to be a better way of doin' this." Caleb said as he made another slice across Annabelle's skin. "I'm not sure that weakenin' her again is the best idea when we're wantin' her powers to grow." Taking a cloth he pressed it over the wound a moment before wiping off the blade and placing the cloth with the others from the various inflicted wounds. "Oh she's fine. She heals faster and faster every day." The first watched him work from the moment he began, "Why did you knock her out for this? I thought you enjoyed the screams of little girls from well crafted expert torture." "Like I said, trying to reserve her energy." He once again sliced her skin and took another clean cloth holding it over the wound a moment, before wiping off the blade and adding it to the others. "Cut her face." The First said as it inspected Annabelle a bit closer. "Do you have some compellin' reason for me to do that?" Caleb said a bit annoyed that it wanted that when he had been going out of his way to avoid her face. "Because I want you to test her all over. To see where we're at. Now, cut her face." The First demanded. Caleb sighed and turned back towards the young woman strung up in shackles and chains against the wall. He put his hand under her chin and raised her face. He looked at her a moment before he rested rested the sharp blade against her skin, pressing it against her cheek. Then he made two quick slices across her cheeks on both sides. Taking cloths and placing them over the wounds, he was hardly happy having to mark up her face like this. "She's only got a little left in her. Only a few places bleed red." Caleb reported taking the clothes from her face. "her head being one of 'em apparently." He said looking at the blood stains against the white square. "Good." It said. "She's progressing well." "Happy to hear it." He said wiping off his knife before putting it down on the table. "Spose thats about enough for one day." Reaching up he started to unlike the shackles on her wrists. "No." The First said halting Caleb from taking her down. "There's more to do." Caleb looked at it. "Put the brand in the fire." "You're wantin' it done today?" Caleb asked hardly expecting this. "She won't sleep through that, and I don't dare dope her up again." "Why not?" It asked starring at him, "If you're so concerned about her pain . . . give her more. You have plenty." "Chloroform dehydrates every little drop of water there is out of a body. We been bleedin' her for hours already." Caleb answered. It just starred at him it's arms crossed and a smirk on it's face. "You're losing your touch, Caleb. More and more as your compassion for her grows. She's becoming a strong source of power, and I know how you are drawn to power. Except you're doing what you can to slow the process down, and that disappoints me. Are you losing your resolve?" "Absolutely not." He said defensively. It walked closer to him, "You and I were closer, much closer. Now it seems she's come between us and is wedging us apart." Caleb turned towards the creature moving closer towards it, "Now, that ain't exactly true." He began, "Annabelle has been quite accommodatin' to both of us since we began this here venture of world domination. She's done everythin' asked of her. Not any complaints not a single one even though she's been given the short end of the stick for a while. I find it curious that you've never put me through such trials and tribulations." "I didn't need to. I know that you have accepted me completely in every way. You've pledged yourself to me and vowed your loyalty. She's resisted me from the beginning as you're fully aware." It pointed out, "She needs to be controlled to make certain she comes down on our side." "She will." Caleb said, "But if she ain't given a bit of consideration for her efforts, she's not goin' to be partial to stickin' with us when the time comes. She will be powerful enough to not cooperate a tad and we won't have no one to blame but ourselves. I don't think I'm wrong here for thinkin' we need to ease up on her a touch. The First looked up at him for a moment, "Alright. Then what do you suggest for the matter at hand?" "We let her wake up. Let her recover, a good meal, a full nights sleep . . . then we'll be able to continue this tomorrow." He explained. "Compassion is a disease, Caleb. You might look into that." It turned and walked away and disappeared. Caleb sighed slightly before turning back to Annabelle and unlocking the shackles taking her down. He took her into his arms and carried her up the stairs to their room.New Days
Caleb came into the dining room from the cellar and arched a brow. When he found dinner on the table. He went into the kitchen finding Annabelle doing the dishes. "What on this green and fertile earth do you think you are doin'?" He demanded. "You're meant to be restin'." He noticed the cuts on her face had disappeared, perhaps a slight shadow where they had been but that was all. There are many ways and many things to be done to purify a dirty girl . . . but cutting on the face wasn't one of them. It ruined any chances of seeing all the emotions flooding through them at their last, and got everything all bloody obstructing the view. In Annabelle's case, he simply didn't want to do it. She was pretty enough for him to look at, but scaring up her face would ruin it. "It's nearly 6:30pm." She answered, "Dinner is to be on the table." It had been the rule in their marriage from day one. Meals were on the table on time, no exceptions. She'd learned that lesson hard and fast and had never forgotten. "Annabelle," He began, "I put you to bed to sleep. Not to tax yourself more by gettin' up and doin' chores." She turned and looked at Caleb with a puzzled expression. If the rules had changed, he hadn't told her about it. Caleb never thought he would be frustrated by Annabelle doing her chores and following his rules to the letter. However he found himself just in that spot. "You come on in here, sit with me and eat your supper, then get yourself back to bed. I mean it." Caleb said sternly. "Caleb . . . I'm supposed to do these things for you. I want to do these things for you." Annabelle said. "Yeah. And you're my good girl for stickin' to it. But now you need to do as I say, and stick to that." Caleb explained. She didn't seem as compliant as he expected or was used to. "Did you not hear me?" "Is it your will, or It's will that guides you." Annabelle found herself asking. "It don't matter, little girl." He said finding it a bit odd she was questioning him about anything he said. "It's what I say, and you do as your told." He said seriously stepping closer to her. "You would never hurt me when I was pregnant with your child." She said, "When did that change?" Although he wasn't very happy with her talking back, he couldn't argue the point that she was right. He started to say something, and Annabelle pulled up her sleeves. Apparently her arms hadn't healed as fast as her face. Several slashes down each one were visible. "The Bringers didn't do this, I recognize your hand, your skill with a blade." "You think I'd let those ham-handed blind rats cut on you?" He demanded. "It had to be done, and wasn't no one gonna do it but me." Caleb was already feeling something he had never felt before. At least not since he was a boy in church. Guilt. "You know as well as I do, we are part of somethin' big here. Everythin' is gonna change and me and you? We're gonna be right there, at the top, makin' it all happen. We don't get handed the keys to the kingdom by just sittin' back and shyin' away from whats got to be done." "I haven't," Annabelle stated, "No once. I've done everything you've asked of me. Everything IT has demanded of me." He wasn't trying to fight with him but she was passionate about what she was saying. More passionate about this then anything before. "We've already sacrificed our first born son, Caleb. Is there a higher price we can pay? Does it demand our second child sacrificed as well?" "Annabelle, normally this sort of thing would get you whipped and you know it. I'm letting it slide right now because you have been through so much, and I understand your upset and frustrated. You need time to recover from your ordeal, before the next one. Which is why you're meant to be restin' right now." Reaching out he took her by the shoulders pulling her closer to him. "Our child isn't in any danger, Annabelle." He said gently looking into her eyes. "I'm glad it's concernin' you , and you ain't forgettin' it for a second, but don't you worry none. You just keep doin' as you're supposed to be doin'. Let me handle the rest. It won't be to much longer now." He kissed her forehead, "Now get in there and eat your supper." She nodded and turned going into the dining room as he told her. "She's ignoring you now." Caleb said as he clasped his hands behind his back. "So I noticed." The First said stepping from the shadows. "Yet you still don't seem to think there is a growing problem." "As I said, she's upset and frustrated. She just needs rest." He looked at the creature, "And she does have a legitimate concern as do I. So tell me, did I just lie to her? Will the child survive this transformation?" Caleb asked. "We'll see won't we. I'm not even certain if she's going to survive." It replied. Caleb gave It a look for it's snide comment before turning and going into the dining room himself. To Be Continued . . . . .
