Disclaimer: I do not own Angel: The Series, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
I know, it's a short
chapter. But I'm currently trying to cure a massive writer's block
and besides the cliffy at the end was just too perfect to not let it
end there.
Chapter 15 – Confrontation
He had planned to be
calm about it. To just walk up to his father and tell him what was
really going on and then hopefully have enough guts to throw him out
of the hotel. But as soon as Wes saw Cordelia and his father sitting
together, drinking tea while she told him about their 'relationship',
the anger Gunn had so expertly dispersed flared up again.
This was a bit to far.
Ignoring the curious gaze Angel sent him from where he was lurking in
the shadows Wes stormed towards Cordelia and his father. He couldn't
be calm and collected now. The best he could hope for was to not
completely scream at them.
“Wesley, I wondered where you
went.” It was strange how Cordy's voice could sound so cheerful
on the surface, while hiding an accusation underneath. It did nothing
to calm Wesley's anger, so he simply snapped at her.
“Stop it, Cordelia. You are
not my fiancée and there is no need to pretend that you are.
I'm not ashamed of my lover.”
As if on clue Gunn
entered the lobby, his disheveled
appearance matching Wes' and leaving no doubt as to who his lover
really was. Momentarily forgetting about the situation he was in, a
smile broke out over his face.
But his moment of
happiness was quickly interrupted by his father's stern, scolding
voice. “I always knew that you were good for nothing. You were
never good enough to be a watcher, but this impairment of the family
honor goes too far. This is what comes from
working with vampires and other low class subjects. You will either
end this immediately and return to England or you may no longer call
yourself my son.”
His father's expression
was confident, absolutely sure that Wesley would do whatever he
demanded. But he wasn't a little boy anymore, nor was he the subdued,
stuffy watcher whose father's opinion meant everything. His own
stance was just as proud as that of his father when he answered.
“No.”
The single word seemed
to shock his father far more than the revelation that he was in a
relationship with a man. For the first time in his life he had stood
up to his father and done what he had wanted to do. Wesley couldn't
believe how good it felt. What made the warm glow in his heart
increase even more were his friends and his lover, who stood behind
him, reassuring him that he had a new family watching his back.
“So this is your decision? To
work with these people, who are not only below your station, but also
not even human.”
Wes thought he could
hear Angel growling and if he had been capable of doing so, he would
probably have growled himself. Never before had he felt such a strong
urge to wring someones neck. He couldn't believe how arrogant and
self-righteous his father was. Why had he
ever cared about his opinion?
“Yes, this is my decision. And
now if you could be so kind, please leave the hotel.” And with
these words Wesley turned around, turning his back on his past and
his family. Striding towards his office he left not only his father,
but also a huge part of his insecure, repressed self behind.

Gunn couldn't help the
huge grin that spread over his face as he watched Wes' father leave.
His lover had finally stood up for himself. Angel and Cordelia
followed him as he walked towards Wes' study, the triumphant look on
Cordy's face matching his own. Although Angel didn't join into the
general happiness that had ensued after the watcher's departure, Gunn
thought that he had seen a smile ghost over his features for a
second.
Entering the office
Gunn immediately pulled Wesley in a fierce, possessive kiss, showing
his lover how proud he was of him. “Well done, Wes.” The
smile that spread over his lover's face finally reached his eyes
again, a thing that he had missed ever since his father had announced
himself. Maybe they could finally have some peace for their
relationship.
Or maybe not.
He had barely finished
his thought, when Cordelia had collapsed
with a vision. Luckily Angel managed to catch her, otherwise she
would have ended up on the floor since neither himself nor Wesley had
been close enough. As soon as the pain in her
head allowed her to speak again, she did.
“Eew. It's huge and furry. And
it had orange horns, that so don't match it's purple fur.” The
three men hesitated a second, waiting for her to continue, when she
snapped: “What are you waiting for?” They weren't waiting
for anything, but before they could grab their weapons Cordelia was
gripped by another vision.
“Your father...the monster got
him...somewhere at the docks.”
Gunn could see the
color drain from Wes' face as soon as his father was mentioned.
Acting quickly Gunn helped Cordelia to the car, while Angel and
Wesley picked a couple of weapons. As much as he had disliked
Wesley's father on sight they needed to save him, otherwise his lover
would feel responsible for anything that
happened to his father, because he had thrown him out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wesley felt sick and
nervous as they drove towards the docks. If something happened to his
father, it would be his fault. He thought he didn't care about him
anymore, but obviously it wasn't that easy. Would his father come to
his rescue if he was in the same situation? It didn't disturb him so
much that the answer was no, but rather that he wanted to save him
even knowing that fact.
His father would never
care about him or love him, no matter what he achieved. Nervously
glancing over at Gunn earned himself a grim, but reassuring smile and
a firm squeeze of his hand. It calmed him to know that Gunn would be
there for him, no matter what happened. His calm lasted about two
seconds until Cordelia's shrill cry to stop shook him up again.
They were outside a
dark warehouse. No light shone from within,
but the aura of evil that surrounded the house could almost be felt
in the air. Grabbing himself an crossbow
Wesley silently sneaked towards the door, followed by Gunn, Cordelia
and Angel. He cringed when the hinges creaked a bit, the tiny sound
unbelievably loud in the still night. Peering into the warehouse he
saw his father strapped to a strange altar, the purple monster
looming over him.
Suddenly the demon
turned around. “Intruders.”
They barely had time to
understand what was going on, when the horde of vampires attacked
them. Swiftly firing arrows from his crossbow
Wesley dusted two vamps, before one forced him into a close fight.
Over the fighting going
on around him he could hear Gunn yelling at Cordelia, complaining
that she hadn't said anything about vampires. A punch the vampire he
fought with delivered to his jaw sent him flying, the taste of blood
flooding his mouth from a split lip. But the distance gave him the
opportunity to aim and dust the vamp,
before he could attack again.
His friends were still
fighting the last two vampires, when he looked over to his father.
Oh, no. The demon had obviously completed the ritual he had been
preparing, the air around him sizzling with the purple sparks of
magic. He had an ax raised over his head,
ready to let it fly down and finish his father off. They were too far
away.
And then the ax
dropped.
