Chapter 14
The next night, Spike came into the Magic Box after the sun had set, flicking his hand in the air, looking annoyed.Giles looked up from his book, reading behind the cash register. "Spike? What do you want?" he asked, almost begrudgingly.
Spike looked up to him as he walked down to the lower level where the watcher stood. "What? No, how's your night? Haven't seen you in a while? Must have taken a while to heal after that brutal beating you got. And oh, by the way, thanks for volunteering to save my bloody slayer!"
Giles sighed, taking off his glasses, and looking to the bleached blond... still less than thrilled. "Alright, what can I help you with Spike?"
Spike walked up, showing the ring on his finger. "It won't come off."
Giles furrowed his brow, putting his glasses back on to look at the item. Spike continued. "It was in a coffin, on some corpse finger, under my crypt. Looked nice, put it on.... won't come off. It's not because it's too small... thing was actually loose before I put it on, it shrunk to fit perfect... but then, like a bloody magnet... it refuses to budge. I figure some kind of magic."
Giles studied the simple silver ring with barley any design or inscriptions. "If it's a magical item...What... what does it do?"
Spike glared. "Do I look like a sodd'in wizard? This is supposed to be your area of expertise Geeves! Just get it off."
Giles sighed. "Ill need to know more about it before I can take it off. Was the coffin marked?
Spike shook his head. "I tried pulling the thing down after I realized I couldn't take the ring off, and the whole thing disintegrated!"
Giles nodded. "A spell to erase all trace." The watcher pulled a small digital photo camera from behind the counter and snapped a quick photo of the ring on Spikes finger.
Spike looked confused. "What are you doing?"
Giles rolled his eyes. "I'll send the photo to a friend of mine, or run it through the watchers data base, see if anything turns up. In the mean time... try not to say any Latin words around it until we know what it is."
Spike looked back at the watcher.... waiting. "That's it? This thing could dust me if I keep it on, and your saying to just... 'be careful with my Potter talk?'"
Giles smirked back. "Yes Spike, that's exactly what I am saying."
Just then, Buffy came into the shop from the gyms door. She was dressed in workout clothes, had her hair up in a long pony tail, and was sweating. "Hey... what's up?"Spike looked to Buffy, and smiled. He then realized how silly he must have looked smiling like an idiot, and quickly changed his face to serious again. He nodded in her direction, trying to over compensate. "Sup?"
Buffy looked at him, confused. "Sup? You say that? That's.... a thing?"
Giles interjected. "Spike was here asking about..."
"You." Spike interrupted, giving Giles a look that suggested he wanted to keep this just between the watcher and him. "I'm.... healed now... and I figured you could do with a bit of sparing from someone that isn't a...." Giles looked back over her glasses, ready to snap at the remark Spike was about to give. The vampire recovered. "....isn't a.... fine outstanding citizen of the this United States."
Giles shook his head, heading into the store room in the back with his camera.
Buffy looked to the vampire. "You sure your alright?"
Spike nodded. "Yeah, I've been... bored. You.... didn't visit... for a week."
Buffy nodded. "Oh... well, you know....I...." She looked back into the store room, seeing Giles, and then gestured for Spike to follow her into the gym.
They both walked into the Gym. Buffy turned around after Spike had closed the door. "I'm glad you're here. I've been meaning to ask you..." Spike nodded, she continued. "You said a new assassin comes every 5 years until the slayer is dead. Well, we just killed Thomas... so does that mean another assassin will come right away?"
Spike looked down, nodding. "If they find out he's dead they will send another immediately."
"Well, how do they usually find out?"
"The order doesn't ever contact the assassin directly after the assignment is given. They will simply wait until his 5 years are up before sending more. "
"So another assassin could be on their way right now.... or five years from now?"
"Its very unlikely right now."
"Why?"
"BECAUSE it's a sect of bloody VAMPIRES! They don't mind waiting. Five years to them is like blinking an eye."
Buffy nodded, seeing his point.
Spike tilted his head, looking at her. "This isn't you."
"What?" She said, looking back shocked.
Spike continued. "You.... asking all these question, looking behind your shoulder all the damn time. Where's the Buffy with a quick quip or fast smile? Where did confident Buffy go?"
"Confident Buffy's still here!" She said, looking up into his eyes, unsure.
Spike looked back, a mixture of concerned and not buying it crossing his features. The slayer rolled her eyes. "Giles said he gave that drawing you gave him to the council and they are looking for the Malus headquarters now. In most cases, the watchers, end up making matters worse.... but If the Malus comes after me in force, I would have no warning... for me.... for my friends....or my family."
Spike nodded, seeing her point. "What's your plan?"
"Plan?" She said, pouting slightly. "I'm usually good with plans... but... this whole assassin thing.... sneaking around and hiding, laying in wait.... it's just so.... sooo...."
"Not you?" The vampire said, raising an eyebrow. The slayer sighed, sitting on the blue mats nearby. Spike walked over, sitting next to her. "Buffy...." He started, looking to her. "You're in a war luv, and everyone wants to take out the general... BUT a good leader ends the battle before it even has a chance to begin. This whole, better than thou art vibe you got.... it's going to get you killed. You think your better than your enemy because you don't fight dirty.... and you're GIVING them the advantage... because they know this."
Buffy looked to him, and then looked to the ground, nodding.
The vampire continued. "You know what I would do if I were you?" She looked up to him, waiting. He smiled.
