= Atlantis, Chapter Thirteen =
"Spike!" Xander exclaimed, pulling at the hand that gripped his wrist. Pain shot up his arm, but he paid no attention to it. Ahead of him, Spike ran with a vampire's speed, a speed that on normal accounts, Xander would never be able to meet. Perhaps it was the fact that Spike was half-dragging him along that he was able to keep up. "Spike, stop!"
"I am not stopping!" Spike growled, glancing back over his shoulder, in his vampiric 'game-face'.
"But, Dedi-!" Xander insisted, attempting to dig his heels into the soft forest floor. He gathered his strength and yanked hard on his captured arm. Spike faltered and, Xander's point being noticed, came to a halt. "We've got to go back and help them."
"Gunn can help her, mate. You saw what the witch did to that man." Spike replied, panting needlessly. His blue eyes were wide with shock, and just a little fear.
"We don't know if that's really her. It can't be her!" Xander said, the pitch of his voice rising.
"Well, it bloody well looked like her!" Spike suddenly screamed, making Xander jump. Xander's arm began jerking, trying to get Spike to release his hold. Spike paid him no mind, and instead chose to continue yelling. "I kept telling people that girl had power, but no one listened. And what now? She's gone and killed four men already... I didn't think she could do it, either. But, pet, you saw all that blood. His screams... And she just giggled! She bloody well tore him to pieces at our feet with a flash of her eyes and then giggled!"
"It's not Tara!" Xander said stubbornly. "There is no way... No way-"
"You know who I was before I got turned into a vampire, love. You know, and yet here I am a different person. Power does that. She's got power. More power than she's use to. I don't know where it came from, but..." Spike trailed off. There was a pause, before he began pulling at Xander's arm once more. "We've got to get out of here. Gunn can protect Dedi. They'll be fine."
"I can't just abandon them." Xander whispered.
"You're not abandoning them... I am." Spike replied, before pulling Xander back into a run. The iron grip around Xander's wrist gave him no choice but to follow.
Gunn felt as though his lungs were closing in on him. His head throbbed from when the black-clothed witch threw him into the nearest tree. Spike and Xander were out of sight, the vampire having dragged his protesting lover to safety. The man that had ran to them was splattered everywhere. Pieces of flesh and drips of blood trailed off him and onto the ground. Breathing deeply, Gunn shook his head in an attempt to clear his vision. He could hear something, like a low melodic hum.
Slowly, he got to his feet. Wobbling unsteadily, he allowed his eyes to dart around the forest in search of Dedi. A few feet away, he found her. The witch, who Gunn could only assume was Tara - though he prayed it wasn't, had Dedi pressed up against the trunk of a tree. Dedi's eyes were opened wide, her face turned to the side as though to escape by simply not looking. Tara's white fingers gripped her arms tightly and her face, hidden behind a curtain of dark hair, leaned closer to Dedi. It took Gunn a moment, straining to see through the dark of night, to realize the hum he had heard was coming from Tara.
Dedi suddenly let out a small squeak, her body stiffening and eyes widening even more. Gunn took a step forward, his foot creating a squish noise in the blood soaked ground. Tara pulled away from Dedi at the sound, turned pitch black eyes toward Gunn for a second. Then, with a low growl and smirk, she shoved Dedi away. Dedi landed on the ground, next to her fallen bow and arrow. She rolled over, looking upward in time to see Tara crawl up the trunk of the oak tree and into the dark foliage above.
"Dedi." Gunn rushed forward, dropping to the ground and ignoring the squelch of flesh under one knee. He slipped his arms around Dedi's shoulders, pulling her close as she shook. "Are you okay?"
"Oh, Isis above." Dedi gasped out. "She... She..."
"That was Tara... I think." Gunn said, pulling Dedi to her feet. "She's... Well, different, I'll give her that."
"She licked me." Dedi stated in a shocked voice. She looked up at Gunn, her eyes as wide as ever. "She licked me."
"She... Okay, that's just weird." Was all Gunn could say. He shook his head and glanced up at the tree Tara had disappeared in. Not a single leaf moved. "Come on, let's go find Xander and Spike."
"Yes. Find them." Dedi said in a voice that clearly told she was not really paying attention.
They began walking through the dark woods, paying close attention to every rustle and movement of nature around them. It took them a couple of minutes to spot the stag, it's ever present being suddenly feeling normal as compared to the blood soaked spot they had just left behind. Neither one spoke. Dedi's head rested against Gunn's shoulder, his arm wrapped around her waist in support. The smell of blood covered them, but was soon ignored. Dedi found her hand frequently drifting upward to touch a spot on her neck. Gunn chose to not comment.
"Well, there you two are." Spike commented. They entered a clearing, where a small fire had been built. Xander sat on one side of the fire, looking for all the world like he was pouting. Spike sat on the other side, stretched out in apparent comfort.
"Are you guys okay?" Xander asked. "What happened to, uhh, Tara?"
"She's gone." Gunn replied, sitting down next to Dedi. "She just kind of ran off."
"After she licked me." Dedi pointed out. Spike raised an eyebrow and Dedi scratched idly at the spot on her neck.
"Bloody hell, she licked you?" Spike asked. "The evil things people do."
"Shut up, Spike." Xander ordered. He let out a sigh and wrapped his arms around his knees. "I don't think any of us are going to sleep tonight."
"What happened to her?" Gunn asked, his eyes focused on the fire. "I don't know her as well as you guys do, but she seemed so level headed and... Sweet."
"Sweet. I wouldn't call that sweet." Dedi said, shivering.
"I don't think that's her." Xander replied. Spike opened his mouth to protest, but Xander cut him off. "I'm serious. What's to say she didn't get possessed or something? Hello, Fangless, possessions do happen. Former Hyena-Boy here, you know."
"He's got a point." Gunn said. "I hate to sound like English here, but anything could have happened when she crossed over to this dimension."
"That doesn't make any sense." Spike insisted. "Sure, something could have came with us, but a possession? There would have been a ritual or something! You can't possess something that already has a host, unless there is a ritual. It doesn't bloody well work that way."
"We need Giles, or better yet, Wesley." Xander commented. "He's the obvious brains of the operation."
"Well, we don't have him, do we?" Spike asked in a snide voice. Xander sent him a glare. "Little Watcher is off getting raped by some god. Or stuffed full of drugs by a god. Or being sacrificed for some god."
"Stop." Xander insisted, glancing over at Gunn, who had gone rigid.
"Why?" Spike asked. "It's the truth, isn't it?"
"Just fuck off, Spike." Gunn said, standing. Spike sneered at him. Gunn balled his hands into fists, looking for a moment like he was going to hit Spike, before turning on his heel and walking to the far side of the clearing. He fell to the ground next to a tree, becoming hidden in it's shadow.
"That was uncalled for." Dedi informed Spike.
"Bugger off." Spike muttered. Dedi narrowed her eyes, then stood to follow Gunn.
"She's right." Xander said. Spike stared at the ground for a moment, before finally meeting Xander's angry eyes. "I know you're tired, Spike. We all are. Today has been difficult and harsh at the very least, but you do not need to lash out at us. I don't know what your problem is, but you need to just get it out in the open. Is it because you're hungry? Is it something I've done?" Spike snorted. "Dammit, Spike! Just fucking tell me!"
"It's nothing." Spike said. Xander let out a growl of agitation. "What? It's nothing, all right! Nothing. I can't bloody well do anything, now can I? I can't stop Tara from going off the deep end. I can't find Wesley. I can't stop that fucking stag from following us everywhere! I can't do anything!"
"So that's why you're upset?" Xander asked, rolling his eyes briefly. "You're upset because you have no control over the situation? Spike, none of us have any control! We don't know where we are! Hell, Dedi fucking lives here and she doesn't know what's going on. You can't control everything, so get used to it and stop blaming it on us."
"I'm not-"
"Yes, you are." Xander interrupted. He took a deep breath, before continuing "Look, I wasn't going to tell you this, but the chip-"
"The chip!" Spike cut him off. "Exactly. I can't help you lot do anything around here. I have yet to come into contact with any demons, pet. I can't fight anyone. I probably couldn't even fight one of those damn gods, since they obviously like to take human form."
"Spike." Xander said softly, his lips twitching as though he wanted to smile. "Why don't you just listen for once?"
"Fine, what?" Spike asked.
"Did you feel any pain when you were dragging me through the woods earlier?"
"Well, it hurt that I couldn't stop-" Spike paused, frowning slightly. "No, the chip didn't do anything, why?"
"Because, let me tell you, having a master vampire nearly pull your arm out of your socket hurts like you wouldn't believe." Xander informed him.
"You mean I hurt you?" Spike asked. Xander nodded. Spike suddenly pumped his fist into the air and let out a whoop. "I hurt you!"
"It's nice to know that's such a good thing." Xander commented. Spike merely grinned. "And this is why I didn't want to tell you. I knew you'd get all... Happy, and do you realize how creepy it is when you grin like that? Stop it."
"Oh, come on, whelp." Spike leered. "We can play naughty games now."
"We could play naughty games before, as long as I enjoyed it." Xander rolled his eyes. "Do you feel better now? You can protect us from all the big bad humans, simply because this place isn't as advanced in technology as the American Government was."
"Yeah, I suppose I am happy now." Spike said, before growing serious. "You're not going to make me apologize to Tall and Pouty over there, are you?"
