Your opponent has spent all of his actions this turn on assembling his Apocalypse Card: The Judge.

“Uh, what?” Xander asked. It was a disturbing message to see on the screen.

The computer did not respond.

Xander looked around the library. Willow was working on a paper, Xander thought it might be the science report they had turned in, while Tara was reading a book and Buffy was pretending to read a book, but actually taking a nap.

He leaned close to the monitor, “I know you can hear me, what’s an Apocalypse Card?”

Who are you talking to?

“You, obviously,” Xander said, keeping his voice low.

You know if your friends see you they’ll think you’re crazy.

“Which is why I’m keeping my voice low,” Xander replied. “Probably why you’re also drawing this out.”

Well, yeah. Also to just annoy you.

“Oh great and mighty computer, could you please tell me what an Apocalypse Card is?”

One condition, Buffy is about to get up. When she does, I want you to go over and squeeze her butt.

“What? Why?”

Those are the terms.

“Fine,” Xander muttered and just as the computer had said Buffy got up and started walking toward the door. She slowed down to stretch her arms and suppress a yawn. Acting quickly Xander slid out of his chair and caught up with her.

“Hey Buff,” he said as he squeezed her butt.

She spun around and immediately slammed her fist into his face.

“Oh, Xander, shit, sorry! I’m not used to having a guy friend like you. My reflexes are really quick and I just responded.”

At least that is what he thought Buffy said, the wave of darkness rushing over him kind of made it hard.

“Come on Buffy, breathe!” Xander yelled before ducking down, pressing his lips to hers and trying to blow as much air into her mouth as he could.

“Xander,” Angel said from beside him, “she’s gone.”

“I’m not giving up!” Xander yelled as he tried again.

He kept up the process of CPR, only briefly stopping when he heard rumbling above him.

“It’s begun,” Angel muttered. “The hellmouth is opening. There’s nothing that can be done now.”

Xander didn’t listen to him and kept trying to breathe life back into the Slayer.

Xander quickly looked around the library. Willow was working on a paper, Tara was reading a book, and Buffy was faking reading a book.

He sat there quietly, too afraid to move. In a few moments Buffy got up, walked toward the door, and did the same stretch and yawn suppression she had done earlier.

“What the fuck?” Xander swore as he looked to the computer.

“Problems?” Willow asked.

For one of the very few times in his life, excluding her attempts at seduction, Xander ignored his best friend.

He did keep his voice low, hopefully they would just think he was upset with a piece of technology, “What the hell was that?”

You getting punched? Oh, just a bit of fun on my part. Don’t worry, no harm can actually occur to you there.

“What was that after? Before the system reset?”

I don’t know what you’re talking about :).

“Like hell you don’t.”

You’re growing on me kid. If something happened between the period you were unconscious and now, why, maybe that is just some mystical entity trying to give you a clue. Of course if said mystical entity was under a strict non-interference orders, it couldn’t explain any more than that.

“But you interfere all the time. I’ve seen you talking with whoever the figure in the robe is.”

Oh, that.

That’s not me.

That’s someone else. I can't tell you anything about that.

Xander let out a sigh, just what he needed, more things he didn’t understand. “What’s an Apocalypse Card?”

Apocalypse Card: The most powerful card/creature that can be played in the game. Its effects can usually destroy the town very quickly. If you destroy the Apocalypse Card, you win the game.

I’m taking a nap now, you really need to focus on the game anyway.

Xander waited for another message, he wasn’t even sure how a computer could need a nap, but there were no further replies.

He thought back to the vision he had while he was unconscious. It was when the Master rose, Buffy died, and he revived her. Except in the vision she wasn’t coming back.

Could that be the Apocalypse that ended the world? No, it didn’t make sense. He knew Tara. He hadn’t known about her until years later. The computer in front of him was also a sleek monitor. He remembered how computers had looked when he was in high school, nothing like this.

“I need to focus on the game,” Xander told himself. It wouldn’t do to worry about everything else. Amazingly, the game had become one of the less confusing elements in his life at the moment.

There was a list with all of the characters in the game. There was no choice to bypass the event, so he guessed he had to go with it.

He considered taking one of his friends, but thought that maybe this would be an opportunity to build a new relationship. He looked to Dawn and Joyce, he hadn’t started anything with them yet, but then he saw that it would take three actions.

His rivals needed actions to have an affect. Draining his allies of actions would keep them from doing anything else, but draining a rival would be useful, no matter what the next step was.

So he chose Cordelia.

“Tough choice,” Xander muttered. He looked at the three girls in the library, “Hey, quick hypothetical. It involves Cordelia.”

“Ug, seriously?” Willow asked.

“Yeah, I know, but just go with it. Now, let’s say I rescued Cordelia and…”

“You did rescue Cordelia,” Tara said. “The other night.”

“Okay, yeah, that,” Xander muttered. He guess that part of the choice had already updated as ‘true’ form the minds of the people here. “Now let’s say there were three possibilities after the rescue. Either I use that opportunity to learn something, Cordelia and I bond over the moment, or in the excitement we get hot and heavy with each other: what would have been the best outcome?”

“Is this you trying to make up a fantasy because you saved her and then she just walked away?” Buffy asked.

“Just curious,” Xander said.

“Sex,” Willow said quickly, causing everyone to look at her. “What? I hate her, but I like her tits. Also, I’ve seen how she looks at Xander, it's the most believable outcome.”

“Best outcome would be friendship,” Tara said, causing her to be poked by Willow. “Hey, it would be best. Then we wouldn’t have to worry about her in school. And yeah, Cordy is hot, but I don’t just jump in bed with a girl because she is hot.”

“Liar,” Willow muttered.

“I got to agree with Tara,” Buffy said after a moment of thought. “It would be nice to have her not annoy us anymore.”

“Majority vote,” Xander said as he took the option.

He almost expected Cordelia to walk through the door. When he didn’t he saw her character card was quite firmly in the neutrals category.

Well it was apparent that while they might have had a good talk after he saved her, it hadn’t instantly turned her into a friend.

Thinking about the friendship rating did cause him to look around the other characters’ standing.
Buffy and Tara were at 69 and were no longer listed as ‘friends’, just at ‘like’. Meanwhile Dawn, Fred, and Veruca were on the cusp of becoming rivals.

“I really need to shore up my relationships,” Xander muttered. He couldn’t fight without friends at his side, and having rivals was making life a lot more difficult than predicted.

He started with Tara:

He still only had 104 points, so it wasn’t like he could spend a lot of points here. He didn’t need much though, so he took casual interaction and she was back in the friend category.

He moved to Buffy next:

It was good to see his friendship rating so high with Buffy. He decided to keep things minimal and took casual again.

He quickly made a decision to ignore Veruca, he’d gotten this far without worrying about her and wasn’t going to start now. He also was more concerned with Dawn and Fred. Sure, a werewolf was probably a bigger danger, but Xander didn’t want to think of Dawn being opposed to him. And Fred, well he didn’t want another teacher on the enemy’s side, Snyder was a big enough problem.

He had good friendship with Fred, but not with Dawn. On the other hand Dawn had a very low social difficulty. Fred had the like “Nice” and he and Tara both had that trait. The only like of Dawn’s he had was ‘Need to Laugh’ which responded to funny, but he had never leveled up his goofiness. On the other hand her social type was Young at Heart which responded well to students and he currently didn’t have any adults in his party.

He didn’t have enough points to get either of them to friend right away, so he kept things simple. He took casual with Fred and regular with Dawn.

With his only rival being the popular students, who had level 2 gossip, that gave him two turns without having to worry about Dawn falling to rival. Hopefully by that time he would have a better friendship score with her.

He had some points left so he considered his traits options. He looked at Willow’s traits and saw that he could remove ‘Poorly Dressed’ for only three points, so took it. He glanced at her and she was dressed more like she did in college, not in high school. His eyes glanced from her to Buffy who was back to napping.

He went into her sheet and selected ‘Dislikes Books’. It cost only six points to remove but was worth it. He went back and saw that the options ‘Appreciates Books’ cost only three points. He took that as well.

When he looked up next, Buffy was actually reading the book, not just pretending to.

He dropped down to the opponent’s side, he couldn’t just let their strength grow without doing something. Party Break was going to hit this turn, but he couldn’t stop that. Instead he looked to vampires. Their numbers had grown to 14.

0 One and Done: Find and kill a single vampire, then call it a night. Will reduce their damage this turn by 15%, increase stress by 5.
0: Sweep: Take a quick sweep through the graveyard. Will eliminate 4, reduce their damage this turn by 25%, and increase stress by 10.
20: Patrol: Go through the dedicated routine of checking Sunnydale for vampires. Will eliminate 7, reduce their damage this turn by 50%,, and increase stress by 30.
225: Hunt: Have an intense effort to track down and eliminate vampires. Will eliminate 11, reduce their damage this turn by 80%, and increase stress by 73.

He didn’t have enough for patrol, plus the stress would be a pretty tough hit. He took sweep instead.
