  • Chapter 12

Spike panted next to the brunette demoness. True to her word, she’d allowed him to kill the stubby vampire after she had her fun with the others. He backed away warily when she turned. Instead of a smirk or a growl, he was greeted with a gentle smile, “You probably don’t remember me...do you?” He shook his head slightly. Something about her was familiar but the memory was unobtainable. She didn’t try to approach him, instead she waved her hand and sat on thin air. Instead of falling like any normal person it held her up. He gaped silently while she smiled proudly, “So...tell me about yourself.”

    Frowning, “No bloody way.”

With a small shrug, “Okay, I’ll talk.” She closed her eyes for a moment and a wave of something hit Spike. It wasn’t unpleasant, just different and a little dizzying, “Let’s see...your childhood...life as a young apprentice to an infirmary...Drusilla...Angelus...Prague...Sunnydale...the Initiative...Buffy...” Her eyes snapped open to look at him in shock, “You love a Slayer?” The blond vampire flinched and tried to back away but found he couldn’t. His body wouldn’t respond and he knew she was the cause. Panic quickly set in, his eyes alighting in fright, “Stop that.” Her words were blunt but her voice was soft. With a sigh she hopped back to the ground, hands behind her back, “Perhaps I should introduce myself. My name is Dien. You probably don’t remember me since the last time you saw me you were four. In human years.”

He frowned at her, his struggles pausing, “Don’t ‘member you.”

Smiling softly, “Your father was my son.”

Spike snorted and started struggling again, “Figures...had to be a demon for leaving us...”

Dien was no longer smiling or cordial, she was in his face, “Listen to me you young pup, your father didn’t abandon you and I’m sorry if you’ve believed that for so long-...”

Spike glared back, “Don’t ‘member him so he took off. No other explanation.” Dien stepped back, feeling guilt she couldn’t explain to her grandson yet hit hard. Oh there was another explanation, and sadly she knew it was her fault. She willed her magical hold on him to loosen.

He felt the hold on him slacken and he calmed a bit. He growled at her defensively since he couldn’t do anything else, “How ‘bout I take you back to her as a peace offering?”

His growls and struggles ceased at her proposition, “Her?”

Nodding a little, “The slayer you love.”

A skeptical look replaced his defensive frowns, “Do you mean it or are you just pulling my leg?” Dien smiled slightly. He was so much older yet just as young as she remembered. Instead of answering with words she answered with a gesture. They both disappeared with the wave of her hand.

Buffy paced back and forth within the confines of the Magic Box. On every pass she took the opportunity to glare at Giles’ back before turning to pace in the other direction. She could put a lot of this on him but unfortunately she knew she had to shoulder the responsibility as well. Silently she wished Spike were here, in front of her. If she just had him back she would make it all right.

She knew they were together. It wasn’t official since she’d never told anyone but she was committed. It wasn’t that she was embarrassed of her feelings because she wasn’t. Not anymore. Life was much too short. Nor was she scared of him or the prospect of yet another vampire boyfriend. There was no comparison to the past since he was unlike anyone she knew. She’d given the topic of ‘them’ a lot of thought since Dawn’s question. She was interested. He was interested. The only problem were her friends and her ex-watcher. Right now he was so far down on her list the only thing she was worried about were her friends.

Her friends were still nervous around him and that’s what worried her. She loved Willow and Tara, even Xander and Giles. She didn’t want to lose them. At the same time she knew she couldn’t be without Spike. He had become too important to her. She’d fallen for him and this time it was for keeps.

And she still remembered her little vision. A world without mom, or Spike. A world that was cold and unforgiving and all she had were her friends. And she’d been miserable, she was sure. She couldn’t do it. She couldn’t let her friends decide her future. Her future was Spike, if he’d have her, and they’d just have to learn to deal. In the back of her mind she still had hopes for a normal life and for some strange reason she knew she might be able to achieve it with him.

Everything else slipped from her mind when she heard a familiar voice softly call her name. Spinning around, she caught a glimpse of Spike and rushed him without thinking. He didn’t back away from her but caught her, gasping softly when she assaulted him with her lips. Not that he wasn’t an active participant. He gave as good as he got, tangling a hand in her hair while the other held securely to her waist.

In between kisses, “I trust you. I know you’d never hurt us and I believe you.”

Spike felt a little more of the ice around his heart thaw. He was a soft touch, especially to those whom he loved. When Drusilla had left it had devastated him but he refused to be destroyed. He simply guarded his heart, much the same way Buffy guarded her’s. Her saying that she trusted him meant a lot.

Giles cleared his throat for the millionth time before the two broke apart. The only reason they did was because Buffy did have to breath. She panted quietly against his chest, her arms wrapped around him tightly. A soft laugh caught her attention, acknowledging the presence of the other demon in their midst for the first time, “Who are you?”

Dien shrugged slightly, “Just an old friend of the family. No one to be concerned about.”

Raising both her hands, she waved and vanished. Spike chuckled, more than a little amused by her playfulness. His grandmum was a demon...and he was okay with that. Which meant that he was part demon before he was turned but he was okay with that, too. He leaned his head down against the top of Buffy’s head, seeking the warmth of her embrace. Contentment he’d never felt before flowed through him. Without his knowledge or power, a deep purr rumbled in his chest. It was quiet enough that only Buffy heard it, her eyes widening in surprise. The surprise soon changed to pleasure as she snuggled closely to him.
