= Atlantis, Chapter Twelve =
They camped in a small clearing, six feet within the woodland borders. Gunn and Dedi easily fell asleep, while an awake Xander and Spike sat on the other side of the small fire. Through the trees above they could see a half-full moon. Xander stared wearily up at it, before yawning widely and curling up against Spike's side. The sounds around them echoed in his ears. "I thought forests were suppose to be quiet and harmonious."
"They normally are." Spike replied, his eyes narrowed. "Something's out there. It's circling the campground."
"What do you think it is?" Xander asked.
"Warm blooded." Spike said, sniffing the air. "Vegetarian."
"That's very weird. You know that, right?"
"Don't pretend it doesn't turn you on." Spike smirked. Xander rolled his eyes. Spike leaned back against the half-decayed tree that rested in the middle of the clearing, wrapping an arm around Xander's shoulders. "Go to sleep, pet. It'll be a long day tomorrow."
"I'm not tired." Xander informed him, before his soft snores filled the clearing. Spike smiled slightly, before turning back toward the woods. His eyes narrowed.
Morning, Xander decided, was something he hated. It was bright and chirpy and just a little twisted. Add in the fact that his neck hurt and Spike was in the exact same position as the night before, and it proved to develop a very cranky Xander Harris. Dedi and Gunn appeared to already be awake, gathering their supplies. Spike was poised, half sitting up with an arm over Xander's shoulder, and staring into the woodland depths.
"What in the hell are you looking at?" Xander asked, rubbing at his neck. "What is it? Is it a bear? A tiger? A llama?"
"No, I- ...Llama?" Spike glanced at him in confusion.
"Yeah, well... Don't they have llamas here?" Xander frowned thoughtfully.
"Don't right know." Spike replied. "They have stags here, though."
"Well, yeah." Xander rolled his eyes. They suddenly widened dramatically as a large, pale brown stag stepped into the clearing. "Um, that would be the vegetarian, right?"
"Yeah." Spike replied.
"I wonder why it's staring at us like that..." Xander trailed off and tilted his head as he examined the stag. For a peaceful creature of the forest, the animal sure was giving them a dirty look. "Is it just me or does that thing look familiar?"
"Familiar?" Gunn asked, giving them an odd look.
"Yeah, hey, it does!" Spike exclaimed.
"When did-" Gunn started.
"They are as blind as they are adorable." Dedi interrupted, shaking her head. "You met Artemis, did you not?" Spike started mumbling, which was answer enough for Dedi. "That is Artemis... In a sense."
"What do you mean, in a sense?" Gunn asked.
"It is her guardian of this particular forest. She can not be everywhere at once, of course, so she places a stag in each forest to watch the travelers." Dedi nodded at the stag, who gave them one last look before exiting the clearing. "They are immortal, and will always remain here."
"That kind of sucks." Gunn commented. Dedi merely smiled. "That thing isn't planning on following us everywhere, is it?"
"If Artemis has an interest in you, it will." Dedi replied.
"Great." Spike grumbled. "We have the immortal pet of a bitch-goddess following us around." Dedi gave him a sharp look. "What?"
"Nothing." Dedi smiled slightly. "I am just thankful you do not know of Egypt's gods. Isis would not take your attitude lightly."
"Well, your Isis can shove it up her arse, because I don't take shit from no one." Spike snapped. "Least of all some big wanna-be bad that thinks it can control us."
As soon as Spike had finished his complaint, a rock flew in from out of nowhere and hit him in the head. Cursing, the vampire spun around in a circle, looking for the culprit. Ignoring Xander's laughter, Spike growled and lead the way out of the clearing.
The woods were dark, with heavy leaves blocking their view of the sky. Here and there a break would appear, shining bright streams of light to the ground. Spike automatically dodged those, old habits refusing to die. The day seemed to pass slowly. They stopped for a brief lunch, where Spike took a quick walk away from their quiet picnic. No one commented when the mournful howl of a dying animal echoed from the direction Spike had gone. Dedi, who seemingly understood what Spike was, offered him an empty container to fill with blood.
They didn't ask how she knew, and she refrained from giving an explination.
It wasn't until nearly nightfall that they came across a group of young men, huddled together around a fire. The four men were dressed scantily, their thin robes doing nothing to cover the shapes of their bodies from their viewers. Spike could smell blood, drugs, and semen on each of them. It was so heavy and thick in the air, he was certain they must have bathed in it. Their group slinked close to the men, until all of them were able to hear the words spoken.
"We should not stop." The only tall, burly one stated in a deep voice. All the others were slim, with lean muscles. This man seemed to stand out like a sore thumb. "He will find us for certain if we pause for too long."
"Doran! Erasmus needs rest!" A darkly tanned man insisted, one arm wrapped around a sickly looking man.
"Do you wish for Dionysus to send Ganymede after us!" Doran exclaimed, looking torn between anger and worry.
"We have time." Another man, who was half-collapsed against the nearest tree, croaked. The smell of sex seemed to focus mostly on him. "Dionysus has found entertainment."
"You mean the man they brought in two days ago?" Doran asked with a sense of disgusted interest.
"Yes." The other wheezed. "He was fully cleansed and prepared this morning. How do you think I escaped so easily? Dionysus had no more need of my broken body."
"You are not broken!" A short blonde said, pulling the other man into an embrace. "We will find you a healer, my friend. You will be clean of Dionysus' poison."
"I pity the man I left in my place." He replied softly.
Gunn, having heard plenty, suddenly stalked away. Dedi shot Xander and Spike a look, before hurrying after him. Xander and Spike followed shortly after, careful to keep their distance as Dedi and Gunn talked.
"Do you think they were talking about Wesley?" Xander asked in a whisper.
"I don't see how they weren't." Spike replied. "Wesley disappeared with someone named Ganymede, two days ago. That's not just a coincidence, Xan."
"I know. I'm just... Hoping it's not." Xander cringed slightly. "You saw what they all looked like. I know you could smell it as well. Hell, I could smell it! That one man looked like he..."
"Yeah." Spike agreed.
"And Wesley's replacing him?" Xander continued, refusing to state what was in both of their minds. "What if we find Wesley and he's like that?"
"He won't be." Spike stated.
"How can you be so sure?" Xander countered. Ahead of them, Gunn let out an angry snarl and punched the nearest tree.
"Because he has that man looking for him." Spike answered, slipping his arm around Xander's waist and pulling him close.
"What about Tara?" Xander asked, after a moment of silence.
"We'll find her." Spike replied. "She's a smart witch. She'll be okay, I know it."
"And what if-"
"Xander, just shut up." Spike interrupted. "I don't bloody well know everything."
"...Sorry." Xander said softly. "Hey, did you hear that?"
"It's probably that bloody stag again." Spike growled, his eyes scanning the area. A sudden scream echoed through the forest. Ahead of them, Dedi stopped short. Her and Gunn turned around, frowns lining their faces. "I take it you heard that, as well?"
"I don't think that was the stag, Spike." Xander whispered. As a unit, Xander and Spike retrieved the swords that Dedi's father had given them. Gunn was already gripping a bronze colored axe.
They all turned toward the direction of the scream, just in time to see one of the runaways, the tanned one, rushing through the trees toward them. Blood coated his body and his robe hung off of one shoulder. Behind him, moving calmly through the trees, was a pitch-black figure. The man looked over his shoulder, let out another scream, and hurled himself towards them. He collapsed at their feet, folded over in what looked like a prayer.
"Please, help! Help!" He screamed, his body shaking with fear. Xander knelt down at his side, placing a hand on his shoulder in order to calm him. Dedi, bow and arrow focused on the dark figure that approached, walked around their small group to stand in the front.
"Do you know who it is?" Gunn asked.
"No... I can't..." Dedi's eyes narrowed in confusion. "It's too dark."
"Bloody hell." Spike cursed, as the figure closed in a few more feet. The man at their feet raised his wide eyes to them as blood trailed down his face.
"Angra Mainyu! It is Angra Mainyu!" His said hysterically, before collapsing to the ground once again. Spike sent the man an agitated look as he crawled around him to hide.
"Well, who the fuck is that?" Spike demanded.
"A Persian god." Dedi informed him, her eyes trained on the dark figure. "The bringer of death."
"Bugger. What is a Persian god doing in Atlantis?" Spike hissed.
"I do not think that is who this is." Dedi replied. "For one, this is a woman. Angra Mainyu is a male."
The black figure finally stepped around the trunk of a large oak that was previously blocking most of the details of it's being. It was indeed a female. A black robe, made of lace and a thick cotton, covered most of her body. A pair of bare, pale white feet peeked out below the hem of the robe. Her hair was long, cascading over her shoulders and nearly to her waist. It was pure black, except for thin streaks of honey-blonde. Her head was bowed. She continued to move forward, her movement jerky and uneasy.
Merely feet away from them, her head lifted. Pure black eyes that managed to glow in the night, despite their darkness, stared at them. Full lips curved gently upwards into a smirk. A gasp escaped Gunn and Xander.
"Holy fuck." Spike said, his jaw dropping.
