    ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Spike walked back to the club with an uncharacteristic smile on his face. It was three AM but there was always someone around and if he was lucky the owner would be there wrapping up some last minute details before his flight. He saw Chad behind the counter and gave him a smile.

    “Big boss in?”

“Yeah, he’s counting out the deposit in the safe room,” Chad jerked his chin in the direction of the back rooms.

“Wanker doesn’t trust me with it?” Spike shot him a playful look of pained innocence.

“You know Steve, no one gets between him and his money,” Chad laughed at Spike’s antics.

Spike fought back the sharp stab of mourning pain the words evoked in him. He remembered another energetically money driven individual that now rested at the bottom of a crater, and it hurt. He didn’t understand why memories of Sunnydale came unbidden in his mind, slicing at him like razors. It’d been years after all, since everything had… finished there, but some things just… hurt. He’d been so careful, keeping all of it buried, hidden, away from his thoughts by any means necessary, it was disconcerting to know the appearance of a single dark haired individual from his past has put all that work out to the curb. Not that he’d had visits from anyone from his past since he ended up on this wretched path of humanity.

He couldn’t have said he’d been close to Anya when she’d been alive, but he’d understood her. He’d understood her and accepted her and had fought to protect her and she’d still died. Maybe that was it. Sunnydale was the first time he’d actually let himself care about the common herd. It was the first time since poncy William had been beaten out of him that he’d allowed himself to feel anything towards a piddly little human. He shook himself out of his daze to see Chad looking at him with concern.

“’m fine mate, just got lost in some wool gathering,” he waved off Chad’s ‘are you sure’ look. Boy’d do anything to get in Spike’s pants and they both knew it.

“Well, how’d it go?” Chad asked, willing to change the subject. He may not have known much about Spike’s past, but he knew that some bits were hard for him. Seeing an old face from his hard past mustn’t be easy on him.

Spike chuckled, “Steve tell you ‘bout my little errand, did he?” He smirked and shrugged after the bartender nodded. “’dunno. We’ll have to see. Bloke says he’ll do it, but he’s still new, scares easy. Think we can bill him as a nervous virgin, or d’you think that’s a tad too vulgar?”

Chad snickered and shook his head, “You know the crowd here pretty well Spike. You know they’d just eat it up and scream for more.”

Spike nodded and jumped to lie on his belly on the bar, reaching behind for one of those plastic ornamental stir sticks they put in some of the drinks. He may have kicked his nicotine habit, but he still had an oral fixation. He popped it into his mouth and rolled it from one side to the other with his tongue. Shooting Chad a playful wink he pushed off the bar and made his way to the back, waving his farewells to the bartender over his shoulder.

Gonna be a good one, this. Get the boy a job, make sure he brings in enough dosh to keep himself afloat, protect him if he needs it, give him someone to talk to… not that he would, but he could. He seems to be talking though, so that’s gotta be good, right? Good for me? Maybe it’s just a sign the boy’s gone totally barmy. ‘Round the bend from all his trauma’s. I’d believe that. Can’t see any other reason he seems to have some trust in me. Why do I keep putting myself in these situations? He lamented silently to himself as he made his way down the hall to the electronically coded locked door.

He punched in his code and smirked to himself over how over protective Steve really was about his precious money. He shied away from thoughts of how Anya would probably rather use mystical instead of mundane since it would keep the cost down more effectively. He hadn’t thought so much about Sunnydale in years. He’d effectively suppressed that span of time and didn’t think about it. He didn’t bring it up so no one knew to ask him about it, and out of all his forged paperwork the only mention of Sunnydale was that his father had gone to school there. The fact that everything was suddenly reminding him of the Sunnyhell didn’t really surprise him. He pushed all thoughts of his past firmly to the side and walked into the room.

“Spike! Did you find our little darling?” Steve practically bounced from his seat behind the desk when Spike walked in. He’d obviously been keeping an eye on the security monitors for the cameras in the back halls.

Spike smirked up at him and nodded, reaching for the bag of strawberry licorice he always kept back here. He pulled out a whip of the candy and nibbled distractedly for a moment or two before speaking, “You know I was serious, yeah? He won’t be waiting tables or doin’ none of those other dance numbers you want the jocks to do. Just with me, no one else, right?” Spike locked gaze with his boss, daring to stare him down just to hammer home the point. Steven chortled and nodded, flexing his long muscled body in a delighted stretch.

“No one but you touches him, got you the first dozen times sweetie, but he’ll be okay? It’s not gonna be too much for him? He looked positively spooked when he ran out of here!” He got up from his seat behind the desk and walked around to sit at the little couch and coffee table set near the door, motioning for Spike to join him.

Spike grabbed two cans of diet soda from the mini fridge beside the desk and sat himself down on the plush upholstery, sitting sideways so he was facing his boss. “Says he’ll be fine, an’ I’ll be there to make sure of it. If he can’t hack it, I’ll go up myself, no worries on that. If we bill ‘im as a blushing virgin, sudden disappearances when he first starts out can be explained away. He’ll be fine.” He shot Steve a pointed look, “An’ you’ll not be naggin’ him about any of it mind. I know he’d bring in more for the bar if he did all that other shite, but it’s this or nothing, an’ I won’t have him feelin’ guilty about it. Got me?” Times like this he missed the demon. It always gave his threats more… oomph. Add a little growl, flash of fangs, and most humans would be piddling themselves and swearing on their lives to keep their promise. Not that many of those humans lived long enough to appreciate being spared… or that the one’s that lived long enough to appreciate it lived long past that.

Steve shot him an unreadable look, “Got you sweetie pie, no bullying the new kid. Why’s he so important to you, anyways? You usually don’t give a flying fig about the new boys. “Float or Sink”, isn’t that what you’ve always said?”

Spike frowned, and took a long sip of his drink, trying to put into words that Steve would understand… and not call the men with those snuggly wrap around jackets and padded cells. “Knew him from before is all. He’s a… friend.” Spike rolled the word off his tongue, almost tasting it, trying it out. It wasn’t like he used that word often, and he wasn’t quite used to using it. It had the desired effect on Steve though. He nodded his acceptance, face carefully guarded, made the classic hemming and hawing about needing to get back to work to count his deposit out, and Spike took it as a cue to get going.

When he walked out of the safe room, he missed the look on Steve’s face, and that was probably a good thing. He never could stand people looking at him with pity and compassion in their eyes, and he would have been markedly alarmed that Steve had apparently read Spike better than he knew.

When the heavy metal door slid shut with a soft whuff, Steve shook his head sadly. “Love hurts….”

    *~*~*~*~*~*~*

Spike made it to his apartment above the club after an after-hours poker game a few of the guys started. Spike was up $350 by the end of the night! All that kitten poker and learning to bluff demons had made him a terrifying opponent in a cut throat game. Thankfully he wasn’t that greedy. He waited till everyone was gone and went up to his apartment by the secret entrance in his dressing room. They’d had it built after Spike put in his bid to buy the place, it was the only way he could get home without a couple of over zealous fans trying to follow him. It confused the hell out of them, and added a layer of mystery that he felt no guilt about cashing in on.

Guilt… right. Spike sighed to himself, and landed bonelessly onto the white linen couch facing the large arched window. He sat in the darkened apartment gazing at the twilit night until the rising sun’s warmth gently bathed him. He leaned his head back, trying to find some semblance of inner peace, tried to quell the swiftly rising panic; it wasn’t working very well. His breathing was growing pained, the bottom fell out of his stomach, and before he could break down into hysterics, he snarled, threw himself off the couch and moved without thought to lock himself into the windowless office. Some days the sunlight was more punishment than reward. Some days… it was all just too much.

Spike unfolded a futon chair, and pulled out a pillow from the closet with the lights out, moving by touch and memory. Some days, it just hurt less if he stayed in the shadows. As he stripped and lay down on the thin mattress, he pulled the pillow close to his chest and thought, Some days… all days…
