Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: The talented Bubbysbub as always has done a fantastic job betaing this

Chapter Twelve
They had somehow managed to fit everyone into Cop lady’s car with Angel and Xander in the boot because Spike was the only one functioning enough to drive and Angel needed one of his lover’s holding onto him even if it was just the short journey to the hotel. They had found Anya wandering around on the way to the car. This meant that Gunn was in the front passenger seat and somehow the four girls squished into the back with an unconscious Kate on top of them. Spike drove quickly but carefully, if the words carefully and Spike could be put in the same sentence, to get them back to the Hyperion and Dr Phillips as quickly as possible.
Angel held Xander close to him needing the warmth and scent of his lover to keep him grounded. He was having a hard time resisting the temptation to bite Xander. Kate’s blood had renewed his almost dormant bloodlust, as he knew it would, but at the time there hadn’t been another way to save Kate from the gun. Instead, by rushing Kate he had got Gunn shot. If Gunn didn’t make it Angel would never forgive himself. Maybe he shouldn’t have gone along with Gunn’s plan. He should’ve gone in by himself.
“Shh babe, I can hear your brooding, it will be okay, just relax,” Xander whispered in Angel’s ear and pulled Angel in until his head was resting on Angel’s shoulder. Unbeknownst to Xander, Angel’s mouth was now on his pulse point in his neck. Angel could feel the blood thrum below the surface and his fangs itched with the thought of finally sliding into Xander’s skin and taking his lover’s blood. Angel had never marked Xander as his consort, never drank from his neck because of Spike. Spike would never have this chance. Spike, with the chip could not ever drink Xander’s blood, and though neither vampire had ever voiced the want, they knew that Xander would willingly give if they asked. Angel did not ask because it would hurt Spike; remind him of his forced neutered status. If Angel drank from Xander it would draw an unbridgeable rift between them and Spike. Angel tried to keep the image of Spike in his head while turning his head to try desperately to not give into the need thrumming through his system.
Spike careened into the underground car park at the Hyperion Hotel desperately, aware of the last time he had done this. Would they ever have a chance to mourn and heal from the first incident before being forced into this situation again? Jumping out of the car, he flipped the boot switch then lifted up Gunn and gently carried him towards the steps up into the foyer. Angel would be devastated if one of his humans died, especially so soon after the Sunnydale deaths, so Spike was determined that this would not happen. He hoped that the girls and Xander would be able to cope with cop lady and Angel. The cop would be fine once they got some blood into her and a bandage on her neck but it was likely that Gunn would need surgery. Hopefully Dr Phillips assistant would already be there with a room all ready, Spike thought to himself.
Spike burst through the door to the foyer with the girls carrying Kate right behind him and Xander helping a brooding, dazed Angel coming up the rear.
“What…?” Wesley started but then he caught a glimpse of Gunn’s sweaty form covered in blood on top of his red shirt. Wesley distantly felt that he was wrong when he thought that he liked seeing Gunn in red and he would be ecstatic if he never saw Gunn in red ever again.
“Watcher! Where’s Doctor Phillips?” Spike asked Wesley forcing him out of his shocked state.
“He’s... He’s upstairs. Second floor, first room on the right,” Wesley answered never taking his eyes off Gunn’s face. Spike turned and quickly stalked towards the steps, ignoring the cry behind him knowing that someone else could deal with it.
“Why is Kate here and why does she have bite marks!” Just as Spike got to the bottom of the stairs Dawn appeared at the top.
“What’s going on? You might want to be quiet, mum’s asleep.” Everyone turned to look at her. Anya who still wasn’t feeling great and was a bit confused from the Shroud of Rahmon spoke up.
“Who are you?” Willow, Tara and Cordelia peered at Dawn as well; part of them could tell that it was Dawn but if they looked closely she seemed to blur until she wasn’t there. They gasped.
“What... What are you?” Willow asked shocked and scared. Wesley, Xander, Angel and Spike exchanged meaningful glances before Spike addressed a shaken up Dawn.
“Its okay bit, they’ve just been through a lot and they’re still loopy from this demon thing we encountered so why don’t you go check on your mum and they’ll be back to normal in no time.” Dawn nodded, not entirely placated but not knowing what else to do. She turned and ran back the way she had come before they could see the tears threatening to fall.
Before Cordelia could comment about how fine she felt, Xander spoke up.
“Lady’s, if you go into Angel’s office I think we’re going to have to explain something to you.” Grumbling they moved towards the office and Spike mouthed ‘thanks love’ to Xander before bounding up the steps two at a time with his precious load.
“Doctor Phillips,” he yelled out as he made it to the second floor.
“Yes,” the doctor in question poked his head out of a door further down the corridor.
“I have a patient. Gunshot to the stomach, looks bad.” Spike answered getting straight to the point. He hoped that the doctor could help cos Gunn was getting worse having just passed out.
“Bring him in here,” the doctor said opening the door wide and stepping out of the way. “Any other casualties?” he asked as Spike placed Gunn on the bed.
“Yeah, but it’s just blood loss from a vampire bite.” Spike answered dismissingly, moving back as the doctor bustled effectively around a comatose Gunn.
“Can you get someone to apply a bandage and I’ll check on her in a while after I’ve stabilised him.” Doctor Phillips asked distractedly already prepping Gunn to surgically remove the bullet.
“Yeah sure,” Spike glanced at the muscle one last time before walking out and closing the door behind him.

“Xander, what’s going on?” Willow asked in Angel’s office. ‘What other secrets has he been keeping from me?’ she thought. She had forgiven him for not telling her about Angel. Willow recognised that if the recent tragedies hadn’t put Xander’s love life into perspective, she would have come down hard on him, and Xander being Xander would have known that. But he was keeping other secrets from her; whatever this thing was about Dawn for one. What other secrets could he be keeping as well? Willow wondered when had she become the person he kept secrets from instead of the confidant, the one who kept his secrets for him.
“I only found out yesterday, Buffy and Giles kept it from anyone for our own protection and we decided to do the same.” Xander tried to explain; they needed to understand the consequences of knowing this information. It had gotten both Buffy and Giles killed and boy was it hard for Xander to say those names in the past tense. If he didn’t have the silent support of Angel behind him Xander didn’t know if he could have mentioned their names.
“Xander what did you find out yesterday?” Anya asked. Xander sighed before telling them.
“The reason they died, the reason Glory’s looking for us, the reason we had to flee Sunnydale is Dawn.” The girls glanced at each other perplexed. Cordelia watched Xander carefully; she knew that whatever it was he was trying to tell them was hard for him. Angel had come to the same conclusion and had been woken up from the apathy he had been in since he saw Kate barrel around the corner with her gun drawn. He moved up until his hands could circle Xander’s waist and he could feel Xander relax back against his solid form.
“What Xander is trying to say is that Dawn isn’t Buffy’s sister.” Before anyone could yell at him he continued, “I know you remember her, we all do, just hear me out and then you can have your say. We don’t know a great amount but what we do know is that Glory is after a key, we are not sure what the key does but a group of monks were hiding it from Glory. She found out and tore them apart but not before they sent the key to the slayer, Buffy, to protect it. They made the key human, gave her memories and changed ours to suit. Buffy found out and told Giles, they kept the secret from the rest of you because they knew that this Glory would stop at nothing in order to get her key.” Cordelia, Willow, Tara and Anya stood there completely stunned. They had never expected this; they didn’t know how to react.
“Wow,” Willow finally breathed.
“Double wow,” Cordelia agreed.
“I can see why you kept this from us,” Tara finally admitted, “Does Joyce know?”
“Not that we know of,” Spike answered walking through the doorway; everyone looked at him expectantly wanting to know what was happening with Gunn.
“The docs operating on him now and he needs someone to bandage cop lady’s wound, he’ll check on her later.”
“Guess I’d better do it,” Cordelia sighed, at least after her course she knew exactly what to do.
“I think we’d all benefit from some food so I’m going to see what I can rustle up in your kitchen,” Willow added her mind still whirring from the revelations. She left with Tara pulling Anya out knowing that the boys needed some time together. Hopefully Wesley would get the hint and leave as well.
Wesley watched them leave before turning to the trio.
“Angel we have a matter of importance to discuss that will not wait any longer.” Angel glanced at Spike wanting to tell him how much he was glad that Spike had been around today but not wanting to do so with an audience as the words were hard enough to say as it was. Instead he sighed and turned to Wesley.
“What is it Wesley?” He asked trying not to sound contrite.
“The watcher’s council has contacted me via email. It seems they were in weekly contact with Giles and as luck would have it he was due to report by email last night. When he didn’t they first tried to ring him and when that didn’t happen they had an American operative try to find him. Obviously that didn’t work and Nabbit had already manage to get the bodies moved so they have no idea where he is.”
“Does this story have a point?” Spike growled, he didn’t have anything against Wesley; as such he just didn’t like the mention of the Watcher’s Council.
“Sorry, I was getting there. When they couldn’t find any of the Scoobies they emailed me to ask if I knew anything. My point is, what do you want me to say, or do you want me to reply at all? While we’re on the subject of the Watcher’s Council, I have gone through our entire collection of books that Rupert did not have and I cannot find anything. I am yet to go through the books that I know he had a copy of for any reference to our mysterious knights, but as to Glory we’ve come up empty. It might be prudent to ask the Watcher’s Council for information as they have more resources than anyone else.”
“You want to tell those British imbeciles about Dawn?” Xander asked outraged.
“No… NO. I would never do that. We can leave any key reference out of it just inquire about Glory.” Angel was dumbfounded. Here was Wesley asking to share information with his former bosses who had given him no resources and treated him like absolute shit in the past.
“They’re going to want something, are you willing to pay that price?” Angel asked wondering why Wesley wanted to contact the Council.
“Angel, we are out of our depth. Glory is going to find us, eventually. Our only hope is if we know more about her. I’m out of resources and contacts. There are only two places that might have the information we seek. Wolfram and Hart, and the Watchers Council.”
“Well why can’t we sneak into Wolfram and Hart and grab the information?” Xander asked Wesley but it was Angel who answered him.
“Wolfram and Hart is too well protected, Xan. Even if we got in there we wouldn’t know where to look. Besides, they would then be alerted that we had a need for such information and that would lead to more complications.” Angel kissed Xander’s neck to try and reassure Xander that such a question wasn’t stupid. If so many lives weren’t in his hands Angel would have considered taking the risk of getting caught because he hated the Watcher’s Council, which he knew was a mutual feeling. In this situation, they were the lesser of two threats. Angel sighed before addressing Wesley.
“Fine, tell them about Giles and Buffy, that the others are here with us. You can tell them that we were all two busy looking after the Sunnydalers and covering their tracks, which is why you hadn’t contacted the Council. Leave Dawn out of it or any mention of a key and ask if they have any information on Glory,” Angel told him. Wesley nodded and moved stiffly back to his own office. Angel watched him go, feeling sympathy as he could read Wesley like a book and knew Wesley’s unrequited (as far as he could tell) feelings for Gunn. Angel turned to his lovers to suggest that they move into their rooms for a little while, as they couldn’t do anything for the next little while. However, just then Carlos Lazinie knocked on the office door and entered. Angel always felt a pang of sadness when he saw a Bracchen demon because it reminded him of Doyle, first soldier down, in what was turning out to be a long list of champions to have died with Buffy and Giles added to the list.
“Hi Angel, first of all, my condolences,” The spiny Bracchen demon began. “Secondly, dad sent me over to give you the deceased’s personal effects and to find out when you want the funeral.” Angel scrubbed at his face, he really didn’t want to deal with this right now, and he was still trying to process the fact that they were dead, gone, forever. He felt a cool hand on his arm and was grateful to Spike.
“I don’t think we can give you a funeral time right now, Buffy’s mother is sick and about to have surgery. Can we let you know once that is over with? Oh I’m Xander by the way.” Carlos smiled and nodded at the explanation, this was always a hard time for families and to have other things happening as well would make it so much worse.
“That’s fine, just give us a ring. Here’s their personal belongings, I’ll talk to you soon.” Carlos handed Xander a couple of manila envelopes and then left. Xander stared at the envelopes for a time before slowly opening them and letting the items fall onto the desk. Angel took one look at the big silver cross necklace and found himself sliding to the floor, tears rolling down his cheeks.
