= Atlantis, Chapter Eleven =
They left Dedi's home at daybreak. Iuput packed them each a mesh sack, all three holding food and a weapon. Dedi spent most of the morning ignoring her father. That is, until right before they left, when she threw her arms around him and called him an idiot for sending her off like this.
They walked down the mildly crowded streets of Atlantis, following Dedi and ignoring the strange looks they were getting. Spike, still not used to being allowed in the sunlight, trailed along the shadows. It seemed as though they would walk forever, and to them all the streets seemed the same. The only change that Xander could see was the first wall of Atlantis growing larger and larger with each step.
They passed a temple, with a large statue of a woman near the entrance. Dedi informed them that it was the temple of Athena. Next, they encountered a group of entertainers. A man stood in the center, talking in prose, while a woman swayed around him with a small lyre. Xander gaped at them, allowing Spike to tug him forward. He finally turned away, only to see that they had finally reached the wall.
"Ohh! Shiny!" Xander announced, lowering his eyes to slits as the sun's rays danced off the strange, silver-like metal.
"What the hell is that thing made of, love?" Spike asked Dedi.
"That is orichalcum." Dedi replied. "The mines in the Atlantian Mountains is the only source in the world for it."
"Cool." Xander nodded.
The group followed Dedi up to the wall, where the city seemed to meet it. There they found a large gate, stretching up to the sky. The gate was open, and even appeared to have no locks. Stationed at the gate was two guards on either side. Spike, when he looked up, could see several guards at the top of the wall, looking down into the walkway. The group followed Dedi to the gate, where they were ignored by the two soldiers, and entered the separation in the wall.
It was like a long tunnel running through all the walls surrounding Atlantis, and while there was no roof, the thick wall stretched so high up, the gate was shrouded in dark shadows. Torches were lit along the separation, allowing the group to see that it was practically a market. Small carts and shops lined the walls, going all the way up to the end of the walkway, miles in the distance. People, both shop owners and shoppers alike, milled about, investigating the different items for sale. There was a little bit of everything, from clothing to fresh and gutted fish.
"Fresh fish!" A vendor yelled out, a large creature that resembled a bass dangling from his hand.
"Please tell me he's not talking about us." Gunn said, eyeing the vendor with narrowed eyes. Dedi gave him a strange look, before grabbing his hand.
"Come. We must find you three reasonable clothing." Dedi told them, dragging Gunn through the crowded walkway.
"Dressed just fine, thank you." Spike mumbled as he followed the other three. Dedi looked back at him, one eyebrow raised.
"You look like a follower of Hades in that cow-skin." Dedi informed him. "If we are to find your friends and not cause trouble among others, you need to fit in."
They walked through the first wall, which seemed to contain mostly food shops, then entered the second section of the walkway. Following Dedi, they approached the last shop of the second section. The shopkeeper, an elderly Egyptian man dressed in pure white, looked up as they approached. The man narrowed his one good eye, the other looking milky white with a scar running down the lid, before breaking into a wide grin.
"Well, if it isn't the innkeeper's daughter." The man greeted, his voice rough with age.
"Good day, Malhuit." Dedi replied, tilting her head in a respectful greeting.
"Indeed it is a good day. Ra has surely blessed us." Malhuit said. He eyed the three men carefully. "And do tell, who are your companions?"
"They are distant travelers. It appears they have lost a friend in Atlantis, and Papa insisted I aide them in their search." Dedi glanced back at the three. "They are in need of clothing, as I'm sure you can tell."
Spike had no sooner opened his mouth to demand that his clothes be left untouched then he found himself at the mercy of Malhuit. The old man had strong hands for his age and Spike was so shocked at being manhandled by this five foot nothing human that he simply allowed Manhuit to measure him. Soon, he had a bundle of material held up to him.
"Oi, I want black." Spike announced when Manhuit looked to be favouring the blue shirt.
"Oh, come on. You look good in blue!" Xander insisted from off to the side. Spike looked over to find his love being measured by Mahuit's assistant, who was an attractive Egyptian man. Spike growled under his breath. "Stop, he's just measuring me."
"Just." Spike said in a low voice, watching with amusement as the assistant gave him a nervous look. "Dress my Xander in green. Brings out the colors of his eyes."
"My eyes are brown." Xander said in confusion.
"Not really. They're more like chocolate. Creamy, melting chocolate." Spike leered.
"You just had to mention that didn't you?" Xander asked in annoyance. "I've gone who knows how long without chocolate, and you had to go and bring it up."
"Could you please keep from arguing for two seconds?" Gunn asked.
In the end, Xander was dressed in a green tunic and brown leather pants, while Spike was placed in all black. He managed to keep his Doc Martins and duster, but he didn't seem to stand out from the crowd as much. Gunn chose a dark burgundy tunic and black leather pants.
"They look like Barbarians." Dedi commented as she handed Manhuit the gold to pay for the clothing.
"Would you prefer I dress them as you and I?" Manhuit asked, gesturing toward their light robes. "They aren’t from around here and the loud one acts like the Barbarians found in the north." Manhuit added, gesturing toward Spike. Spike sent him a two fingered gesture, but it didn't have the desired effect on a man who didn't know what it meant. "This way people will understand when they get lost in our city."
"Very well." Dedi said. She patted Manhuit lightly on the arm. "May Isis give you a long life, my friend."
"And you as well, child." Manhuit smiled.
"Well, let's go." Dedi said, turning toward them. She gave them a half smile. "It will take most of the day to walk through the walls. We should reach the plains a couple of hours before sun down, and the woods by night fall. This would be much easier if we had horses, but I'm not that wealthy, I'm afraid."
"This is fine, really." Gunn smiled.
"We can make camp on the edge of the woods." Dedi continued, as they began walking past the costumers and shops. "If we do not appear a threat, we should have no problem with Artemis stopping us from entering the her realm. The centaurs, however... Well, we shall try to stay clear of them. The wood nymphs will avoid us at all costs, thankfully."
"Nymphs, eh?" Spike leered. Dedi shot him an amused look.
"Try that expression on a nymph, and they will castrate you within five seconds." Dedi informed him.
"Bloody hell, no one around here is any fun." Spike muttered. Xander patted him slightly on the shoulder. "The same to you, pet. No fun."
"Hey, I shagged you the other night." Xander glared.
"But I need more, Xan." Spike whined, stuffing his hands into his pockets to search for his cigarettes. Xander watched in amusement as Spike began to curse and pull out bizarre items in his search. He calmly held out his hands as Spike handed him various things: a piece of string, a stake, half a piece of gum, something that looked like a moldy green burrito, an empty packet of blood, a slice of cheese wrapped in plastic, an unopened can of Dr. Pepper, and chap stick.
"Spike." Xander said slowly. The others turned to watch. Dedi had found that she enjoyed the two's banter greatly, and at the slightest hint of a session beginning, she rushed over to watch. "What the hell are you doing with all this stuff in your duster?"
"Never know when you might need something, pet." Spike said offhandedly, dropping a fork into Xander's arms before moving on to another hidden pocket.
"Yes, I suppose chap stick is a very nice tool for a vampire to own." Xander said sarcastically.
"S'not mine." Spike mumbled, handing over a folded piece of paper. Xander eyed the paper, maneuvering the items in order to open it.
"What do you mean, it's not yours?" Xander asked, before reading the paper.
"Stole it, didn't I?"
"You stole chap stick?" Xander exclaimed, watching in horror as Spike drop a wad of toilet paper into his arms.
"Well... It..." Spike paused, before letting out a dramatic sigh. "It's about eight months old, you know... Never thought you'd miss it."
"Wait... You stole my chap stick?" Xander asked, his mouth opened in shock. "Eight months...? You mean you stole this when you were stalking me?"
"Oi! Wasn't stalking. Was flirting discretely." Spike protested. Xander sent him a glare, before turning back to the paper in his hand. Spike had finally found his cigarettes and set about lighting one.
"Spike?" Xander asked softly, as they began moving once more. "Why do you have a list of enemies in your pocket?"
"Is that what that is?" Spike looked shocked and moved to take it from him. Xander darted away, dropping half of Spike's things in the process. Spike cursed, before picking them up and returning them to their proper place. By the time Spike had finished, all Xander was left with was the toilet paper, gum, and list of enemies.
"Spike, did you know that I'm on this?" Xander raised an eyebrow, a smile fighting to develop on his face. "In fact, I'm number two, right after Buffy. But that's not the weird part."
"Oh?" Spike said with a look of indifference, but Xander could tell it was fake.
"It appears that someone has circled my name and drawn little hearts around it." Xander said, before handing the paper back to Spike. Spike looked down at it briefly, then stuffed it back into his pocket. It was then that Xander began laughing. Spike let out a growl, brushing past him to walk beside Dedi and Gunn. Xander chuckled to himself, before opening up the toilet paper to find Spike's tiny handwriting in red ink.
Xander read, his eyes squinted, as they continued through the walkway. It wasn't until they reached the plains, their journey so far being uneventful, that Xander folded up the paper and slipped it into his pocket. He saw Spike's eyes darting over to them, as they stretched out and enjoyed the wide area as compared to the compact walkway. The woods could be seen a good distance away, but by looking at the sun it appeared they were moving faster than expected.
"Not going to say anything?" Xander finally asked.
"What's to say?" Spike countered, tossing his latest cigarette to the ground.
"I didn't know you still wrote poetry-"
"Do not!" Spike insisted, sending Xander a glare. Gunn could be heard chuckling.
"Well, okay, just one poem." Xander relented. "So?"
"So, what?" Spike asked.
"Was it about me?" Xander grinned and slipped his hand into Spike's.
"No." Spike replied, before giving Xander's hand a squeeze. "You know it was."
"Those two are very sappy." Dedi commented from ahead of them.
