Buffy couldn’t believe that this was happing. If anyone had
told her yesterday that she would be lying in the hospital today, beaten,
raped, homeless, an outcast from her family, then she would have referred them
to the local mental intuition.
They disowned me. I am
so repulsive to them that they no longer want anything to do with me. I know
that I screwed up. I lied to them and dragged Willow into this mess with me. I know I am a
horrible friend, and now I have lost everything. My friends… my family… everything
is gone.
Buffy was lying in the hospital bed, blinking back tears,
when the police detective walked in. She hated him with a passion. The
questions he asked were demeaning and redundant. He kept going over the same
things over and over again. At one point, he had even asked her who she was
protecting, as if she knew the real identity of her attacker. The last straw
was when she was informed that falsely reporting a crime was a crime in
itself.
The officer stared directly into her eyes and spoke, “Miss
Summers, there are a lot of holes in your story. As it is, your account of
recent events does not make any sense.” He paused just long enough to throw a
disparaging look her way. “If you believed you were meeting this friend of your
friend’s brother, then why did you sneak off before she could meet up with you
guys?” (He began to shake his head.) “I think I know how things really played out. I believe that the
truth lies closer to the fact that you got caught with your pants down,
literally, and thought this excuse would be your best option.”
Buffy stared at the detective, stunned by his accusations.
She tried to speak, but the officer just raised his hand at her. Angrily, she
bit her tongue and tried to hold back the tears.
The officer, still on a roll, ignored the girl’s distress
and proceeded in a harsh voice, “In fact, if I were to hazard a guess, it would
be that the man in question is a boyfriend.”
He began to pace, flailing his arms in excitement as he
recounted his version of what had occurred that night. “You disappeared for a
little slap and tickle, but things went a little far. When you realized how
late it was, you freaked out over what had happened. You were worried, scared
that you would get into trouble. So you decided that he should rough you up a
little, claim rape, and no one would be mad that you had slipped away and made
everyone worry about you.”
When he was done, he had a smug look on his face that
indicted he thought he had figured everything out and was waiting for Buffy to
come clean at any moment.
“WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?” Spike yelled at the
piece of shit standing in front of his goddess. He could hardly believe the bullshit
that this asshole just spewed from his worthless mouth. He has two seconds to get the hell out of here. Cop or no cop, I am
going to throw him out.
Buffy’s eyes darted to the angry man who had just appeared
in the doorway.
He looks so mad, she
thought sadly. Oh God, he hates me too! I
don’t really blame him. I mean, who did I think I was? Certainly not a friend.
Friends don’t drag friends into these kinds of situations. But wasn’t losing Willow’s friendship
enough? I mean I got the message loud and clear that Willow hates me and is probably disgusted
with what I did. Hell, she wouldn’t even come in to say goodbye.
Buffy was so lost in her own thoughts that she completely
tuned out the two men who were presently in her hospital room. She was pulled
out of her own depressing thoughts by the sound of Spike’s voice. Spike was yelling
something out to her as he put his hand on the detective’s arm and pulled them
both out of the room.
I’m worthless, Buffy
thought, I have no one, and I have
nowhere to go. No job. No money. No friends. No place to live. I bet no one
would even care if I was dead. Hell, she thought with a cold laugh, they would probably be happy.
Spike was beyond disgusted with the so called detective; he
wanted to beat the man to a bloody pulp. He kept the jerk’s arm firmly grasped
in his hand. Now that they were no longer in the same room as Buffy, he could
finally let it all out. With a firm jerk, he spun the man around so that they
were facing each other.
With a quiet but steady voice, he confronted the officer, “I
meant every word I said in there. I have no clue who you think you are, but I
never want to see your face ever again.”
Spike let the man go, and with a firm shove, he pushed the
police officer as far from him as he could. I
can’t believe him. Yes, you idiot, this was all just a clever ruse. Spike
laughed bitterly. Asshole.
Spike had to wait a few moments before venturing back into
Buffy’s room. He didn’t want to scare her, and he knew the deadly look in his
eyes would have done exactly that. When
he finally walked into Buffy’s room again, he felt his heart break for the
second time. Buffy held a blade to her wrist. Creeping quietly forward, he
grasped her hands into his and forced the blade away from her wrist. When he
finely found his voice, it shook.
“No, pet.”
With that, he sat on the edge of her bed. In a gentle voice,
he asked her to drop the blade.
Buffy just kept her head down, staring at the shiny metal
resting against her smooth pale skin.
It could all be over
in just a few minutes. I have no idea why Spike wants to stop me. I just want
the pain to end; I just want this nightmare to end.
Buffy let out the breath that she hadn’t even realized she
been holding. The blade slipped out of her fingers and fell to the ground. She looked
up at Spike. Why? Why does he seem to care?
He had thought that after tonight, nothing else could shock
him. But when she looked up at him with such a sad face, her eyes pleading with
him to understand, he lost it. With a strangled cry, he opened up his arms and
wrapped her as close to his chest as he could. Buffy lay still in his arms. For
a few minutes, he just held her, rocking her back and forth, whispering to her
that all would be well.
After a while, Spike could not hold back any longer. He
needed answers. Still rocking Buffy, he started talking in a soft voice,
“Buffy, sweetie, first, let me tell you that all the crap that came from that
officer’s mouth was just that: crap. I want you to remember this. It was not
your fault. I don’t care what the police or you parents said. It was not your
fault.”
Spike held on a little tighter. This is going to be the hard part. “Buffy, there is something else
you need to know.” Spike had no idea how she was going to handle what he was
about to tell her so he gritted his teeth and carried on. “The man who raped
you was not Angel.”
Buffy felt her blood run cold at what Spike was telling her.
At first, she thought that he was lying, trying to protect his friend. However,
her thoughts changed when Spike took out his cell and told her to call
information.
“Go ahead,” he said as he tried to hand her the phone, “just
ask for the Pike Street
police station in Seattle, Washington.”
Buffy just stared numbly at the phone Spike held out.
“I know this is hard to believe, but for the past week, Angel
has been in Seattle
helping his dad open a new office. As soon as I heard from Willow, I called him. He was still there. I
had him go down to the Pike Street
station. You can give them a call, and they can vouch for Angel’s whereabouts.
I’m sorry, but he is not the rapist.”
Buffy tried to respond or at least make some noise. She could
not get her voice to obey. She continued to stare at the phone Spike was
holding out, afraid to touch it. Her fingers twitched as she tried to build up
the courage to take it and find out if Spike was telling the truth. Spike saw
the fear and indecision in her eyes and made things a little simpler. He placed the cell in her hand, wrapping her
fingers tightly around it. She looked up at him, her eyes wide. He smiled
encouragingly. Somehow, she managed to dial the right numbers. After a few
minutes, Buffy hung up the phone and proceeded to throw up all over Spike.
When she was finished, she curled up and cried until there
was nothing left.
Ignoring the vomit that covered his chest, Spike thought
about what Buffy’s options were. She had no place to stay and taking her to his
parents’ house was out of the question. His parents had seen to that.
I am definitely going
to have a talk with my parents when things settle down.
He also knew that Xander’s house was definitely out of the
question. Spike trusted Xander’s dad as far as he could throw him. He would never
allow Buffy to set foot in that place. She would be better off anywhere else.
“Buffy, sweetie,” Spike started to gently pull her away from
his chest. Pushing her bangs out of her eyes, he smiled down at her. “We have
to work out some tough answers very soon. Right now, the most important
question is where you are going to live.”
Buffy could not believe what she was hearing. Her shame was
overwhelming. Did everyone know about what had happened? Did everyone know that
her parents were so disgusted with her that they had kicked her out?
Looking up at Spike with tear-filled eyes, she questioned
him, “Where will I go Spike? My parents won’t take me back. Even Willow hates me. She never
even showed up. Where am I going to live?”
Spike was shocked to hear that she thought Willow would desert her, but he could
understand how she must feel. She had been through so much. Her whole support system had been yanked right
from underneath her.
“Buffy, Willow
still loves you. Your parents called mine, and they freaked. They threatened to
kick Willow out
of the house if she continued to see you. She had to go with them.”
“Oh, poor Willow! My parents are right. I am a bad friend,”
Buffy continued to stare at her hands, not knowing what turn her life was going
to take next; but she had a feeling that things were going to be okay as long
as Spike was there.
Spike stared at the broken Beauty in front of him. He needed
to find a place for her to stay, a safe place. He knew she had not thought of
it yet, but she still was not in the clear. She had seen her attacker and could
identify him. He would realize that soon, and she would not be safe. Picking up
his phone, he went to the far side of the room and made a quick call. After a
few minutes, he hung up the phone and turned around to face Buffy.
“Buffy, you need a place to go, and I think I might have a
solution, at least a temporary one. How about you come and stay with me? I have
an extra room.”
Buffy had no clue what to say. She didn’t feel right moving
in with Spike, but she really had no choice. After thinking about it for a few
minutes, she looked back up at Spike and agreed. “Spike I am not going to lie
to you. I’m not totally sure this is the best thing, but I really have no other
options. So, yes, thank you, I will move in with you.”
It was at that very moment that the doctor on call walked
in. He began to talk, never even looking to see who was in the room.
Still staring at the chart in his hand, he spoke, “Ms.
Summers, I just received some of the tests back. It seems that your rapist used
condoms and was very thorough. The rape kit came back clean. No semen or even any public hairs, yours or
his. The vaginal tearing was very severe with what looks like…” At this point,
he finally looked up and noticed his patient was not alone. “Oh…”
