Also starring Lyndsy Fonseca as Zoe Anna Popplewell as Emmy Guest starring Ellen Page as Poppy Hellawell * There was a slight stir from Buffy as Faith got out of bed. She looked beautiful with her blonde hair splayed over her cheek and the smooth skin only covered partially by the blanket. The brunette reached over and kissed her lover’s forehead. Buffy mumbled something in her sleep as Faith’s lips touched her. Faith pulled up the bedding so it covered her more, keeping her from waking up cold. Then she pulled her own robe off the back of the door and headed down for some breakfast. She had just finished putting breakfast on a tray to take up to Buffy when the kitchen door opened and in came Darla. The vampire was grinning happily, "We’ve got it." Faith started to pick up the tray, "Got what?" she asked absently. "The information to bring down Giles and his murderous bitches," Darla’s smile was triumphant. Faith looked at the food, rapidly cooling waffles and coffee. Then she put down the tray, she could make a new batch in a minute, "How? And what?" "Our Slayer in the inside has got us the codes to the Slayer’s facilities, including passwords to their computers, she just rang and gave them me," Darla pushed a piece of paper across to Faith, with a jumble of letters and numbers written on it. Faith pushed it back, "So? We still don’t know where it is. Whenever our contact has been there it’s been in the back of a blacked out van – it could be anywhere, in half of the States." "Oh there’s more," Darla was smiling wider than the proverbial Cheshire Cat, "I did a quick check up on Kate and Lilah. They’ve only found the Slayer’s hideout – it’s the old Initiative base." "Fuck," Faith murmured under her breath. It was so obvious, with ready-made detention facilities for demons, labs and best of all Giles and Willow would have known about it. But then, she reminded herself, its obviousness was why she hadn’t looked for it; assuming Giles would have preferred an old castle or something suitably romantic. She looked at Darla, "Wake Amy, I’ll head over and pick up Kate and Lilah. We’re going in." * "What do you think of that one?" Tara pointed at a necklace in the window and Dawn almost salivated, though whether it was because of the diamond necklace or because Tara had squeezed her hand as she spoke Dawn couldn’t tell. "It’s lovely," she said. Then she looked at the price tag, "…but way too expensive." Tara leant forward and kissed her, ignoring the looks of the other shoppers wandering round the Mall, "Don’t worry about that. Nothings too good for my Dawnie," then she added less romantically, "Anyway I’ve got twenty years of interest in my savings account that hasn’t been touched." "How sweet…" said a voice behind them. "Kennedy…" Dawn said as she turned. The Slayer stood hand on hips, beside her stood a gaggle of teenagers, each with grim looks and with body armour that disguised their shapely curves. "Er, Tara, this is Kennedy – Willow’s er, new friend," Dawn said in introduction. Kennedy’s eye’s narrowed as Tara gave a smile that had the warmth of the North Pole, "I know." "I heard rumours you were back. Working with the bitch Amy," Kennedy’s smile in return had even less warmth than Tara’s. Dawn shivered and put her arm through Tara’s, drawing close to the blonde for protection. There was a nod from Tara, "But at least I can trust her not to put spells on me – can you say the same for Willow? Let’s hope you don’t argue" There was a laugh from Kennedy, "Oh Tara, Tara, Tara. How little you know – I can’t remember ever having a fight with Will." There was sadness in Tara’s voice as she replied, "That was what I was afraid off…" Kennedy took a step forward and her tone went business like, "The two of you are coming with us. Are you going to do it quietly or…" she gestured at the half dozen Slayers behind her. There was a sigh from Tara and she looked at Dawn, "I’m sorry – I would have liked more time." Dawn felt Tara arms whip away from her and the blonde shoved her in the back, "Run!" she screamed and began an incantation. For a second Tara glowed brightly and then two Slayers’s slammed her against the window. She collapsed winded, as one of them slammed a gag into her mouth. Dawn ran. All of three yards before Kennedy brought her down. She hauled up the struggling brunette, twisting Dawn’s arm painfully behind her back as she did so. "Slayers business, nothing to see here," Kennedy announced to the watching crowd. Seconds later Dawn and Tara were bound and gagged in the back of a darkened van. Dawn felt a once familiar feeling in her stomach, one that she had not felt for years, not since Buffy had ceased to be a Slayer. It was a feeling of uncontrollable fear. * "It’s suicide," said Buffy firmly, "I won’t let you go." The kitchen was crowded, apart from Buffy and her daughters, Faith, Amy, Darla, Lilah and Kate sat, or stood around. "Risky, I admit," replied Faith, "but one worth taking. Look B, if we can get in their we can get solid evidence, enough to blow the Slayers Council wide open. It could save hundreds, thousands, my God, even tens of thousands of lives." "Anyway," said Darla, "we’ve got codes to get in. The Slayers think their base is secret, so it’s hardly guarded. Faith and I get in quickly, hack the computers and out in time for tea." "Faith, you and me," added Kate, "Those bastards killed cops and I want them nailed to the wall." Darla shrugged, "Fair enough." Buffy’s mouth opened to object, but Faith spoke before she could say anything, "B, we’re doing it." Buffy’s shoulders shrugged in resignation, "Now I know just how my Mom felt whenever I went to fight evil hell-bent on destroying the world;" She stood up and took Faith’s cheek in her hand, her thumb rubbed softly at the Slayer’s cheek, "Be careful and come back safe." "We will," replied Faith cockily. * It was ridiculously easy getting into the complex, thought Kate. She had expected they’d have to crack some heads at some point, disappointingly the doors were unguarded and as they flitted through the corridors they hadn’t seen as much as spider. Things weren’t made any more difficult by the fact that the Slayer’s had posted signposts all over the complex and they had just followed the directions to Giles offices. With the passwords they’d easily cracked into his computer. It was a treasure trove of information; each attack was minutely detailed, transport arrangements, demons who taken part, which Slayers had controlled them and even press cuttings and analysis charting support for the actions of the Council. There was a beep and Faith looked up, "That’s it. Let’s go," she pulled the data disc from the computer and put it in her pocket. The door to the office swished open and in stepped Giles, Willow and the Slayer Poppy, who Kate had licked out at her precinct. They didn’t seem surprised to see the three women hunched over Giles’s PC. "Hi Giles, Will; long time no see," Faith’s tone was breezy, even arrogant, but she also tensed and almost imperceptibly moved into a fighting stance. Beside her Darla was also moving round the desk, getting ready to pounce. Kate reached into her jacket, reassured by the touch of her pistol butt. "Hello Faith," Giles tone seemed friendly, with all the charm that the British middle class can muster when faced by dangerous odds and little back up. But his eyes were cold and from the way Poppy glanced over her shoulder Kate knew that it was an act and the three of them weren’t alone. "I guess this a trap," Kate feeling the need to interrupt before Faith and Giles started reminiscing about the good old days The Englishman turned to look at her, cold, ruthless, killing eyes, which his smile couldn’t hide, "Yes, Detective Lockley; I’m very much afraid it is," he turned back to Faith, "Did you really think we’d have a secure facility unguarded and protected only by computer passwords?" "Yes," replied Faith, Giles ignored her. "This is state of the art, DNA recognition and guarded by dozens of Slayers," he said. "To keep your little pets in," Faith’s smile was goading. Giles didn’t take the bait, "I wouldn’t call them pets. They’re dangerous rabid beasts who need to be destroyed and we will – once the world is safe for humanity again. "Now could you hand me the data stick please," Giles held out his hand. "I don’t think so," replied Faith. She started to take a step forward and Willow whistled. From outside the room a dozen Slayers rushed in, each wearing body armour and carrying heavy wooden clubs. The odds didn’t look good, thought Kate and Faith thought so too as the Slayer took a step backwards. "Guess we better surrender then, huh?" Faith asked Giles. "I think that would be a good idea," he replied calmly. Faith threw him the data stick and he caught in cleanly, before dropping it into his inside jacket pocket. "Of course," Giles smiled, "I know your emergency plan." Kate felt her stomach constrict and for a second even Faith looked worried, before her cocky features returned, "You got it wrong Giles, there ain’t no Plan B." "Really?" Giles pretended to look surprised, "So you weren’t relying on the Slayer you’ve got in the inside sneaking to your cells and letting you out?" Faith’s expression didn’t change, "We haven’t got anyone on the inside." Giles looked at her like a parent who’s just found condoms in their fifteen year old daughter’s room, a mixture of sadness and anger, "That’s not true, is it Poppy?" he turned and looked at the Slayer. Poppy briefly started, but before she could anything two other Slayer behind her had pinioned her arms to her back. Faith cursed. Poppy bowed her head momentarily and then looked up at Giles, "Sometimes Mr Giles, the ends don’t justify the means." Giles stroked his chin, "A point of view I suppose; though one, I must admit, I don’t share." That was when Faith launched herself at him. Kate drew her pistol, but Faith was in the way and then Darla pounced, further blocking her movements. Faith almost managed to get her hands on Giles throat before half a dozen Slayers pummeled her to the ground. Darla lasted seconds longer, but soon she too was buried under a pile of teenagers. It was Kate’s only chance. She aimed her pistol and pulled the trigger. Willow mumbled something. There was a bang as the bullet exploded in mid-air. Kate swung round to aim at the witch. Willow spoke again and the cop dropped her gun as went icy cold. She was still looking at it in shock when a Slayer clubbed her on the head. Giles looked at the three bodies, "Throw them in the cells and tell the snatch team to pick up Buffy and the others." * There was a sudden crash from downstairs. Buffy put down the book she was reading. There was a cry from Lilah, followed by some more loud noises. Buffy got off the bed and opened the door. There was a shriek from Zoe and Buffy walked quickly to the top of the stairs. In the living room two Slayers were holding Zoe as she struggled unsuccessfully to bite or kick them. A third Slayer was standing over an unconscious Emmy. From the kitchen Buffy could hear the sounds of Lilah screams and the sound of a table being overturned, followed by silence. "She’s up there’ the Slayer standing over Emmy looked up at Buffy, pointing her to three more who were entering through the wrecked front door. Buffy stepped forwards, unsure what to so, but not going without a fight. She felt Amy’s hand on her arm as the witch appeared from the bathroom, she was wearing a towel round her head and her robe wasn’t properly tied, flapping open with her movements. "Go Buffy, I’ll hold them" she said. A spark flashed from her hand and the pointing Slayer swore and fell over backwards. She scrambled to her feet again, her hands slapping at her smouldering T-shirt. "Damn," said Amy, "body armour," she turned back to Buffy, "Just go." "What about Emmy and Zoe?" Buffy asked. It was Zoe who answered, "Go Mom," she screamed up the stairs, "You can’t help us if you’re taken." She fell backwards as one of the Slayer’s back handed her. Buffy knew she was right, but it was still the hardest decision she ever made as she turned and ran back into her bedroom. Behind her she could hear a yell of pain from a Slayer who had ran into Amy’s powers, followed by boots clumping on stairs as the others rushed the witch. Buffy picked up Faith’s car keys and thanked her luck that they’d decided to take Kate’s car. She slid open the window. In the corridor outside she could hear the muffled sounds of fighting and shrieks of pain from both Slayers and Amy. Throwing her legs over the sill, Buffy looked down. The ground seemed a long way away. She took off her heels and threw them to the ground, then with a deep breath she followed them. She hit the ground with a thump. As she picked herself up, she thought about how much easier it had been escaping from her room when she was a teenage Slayer trying to avoid her Mom’s watchful eye. From her window she heard a shout as one of the Slayers saw her. Picking herself up Buffy ran from Faith’s car. Behind her she could hear a whack and an oomph as the Slayer followed her down. Buffy put the keg in ignition as the Slayer wrenched open the door. Pressing down the accelerator Buffy zoomed out as fast as she could. For a second the Slayer held on and then she was off, bouncing in the dust, swearing as the car skidded away. Buffy took one random turn after another until she was sure she had lost the Slayers. She stopped the car and sobbed for a few minutes. Then she sat and wiped her eyes. "Where did I put ‘Of Filiolus quod Trucido’ attic or garage?," she asked herself as she headed to her home. She was Buffy the Vampire Slayer and she knew what she had to do. * Faith’s head still ached even though it was close to a day since she’d been hit, though at least she was no longer seeing double. Not much that there was much to see in the room she was in. Darla sat brooding on one of the beds, Tara was holding Dawn’s hand on the other. Kate meanwhile was consoling Poppy by the wall; she teen blamed herself for the plan going wrong. Faith didn’t – the fault was Faith’s; she’d been too overconfident, she should have listened to Buffy. The door opened, Amy stumbled in, followed by Lilah, Zoe and Emmy. Faith almost cried in frustration, but at least Buffy wasn’t there. She gripped the two teens tightly, feeling their shaking bodies, "It’ll be alright," she lied, "me and your Mom, we’ve been in much tighter places than this." Zoe sniffed, "We’re not scared," though Faith knew she was lying, "Mom ‘ll get us out." For a second Faith remained silent; even Buffy at her strongest would have struggled to single handily break into a secure installation guarded by Slayers and rescue everyone. Then she felt a little white lie never hurt anyone, "Sure she will," she smiled at Emmy and Zoe. There was a hiss of static from a speaker in the wall and then Giles voice, "Please enter the next room." A door previously sealed opened in the far side of the room. Gingerly the prisoners entered it. The door to their cell shut behind them. Darla tried to push back against it, "Locked," she said after a few shoves. The room they were in was coloured a dirty white. About thirty metres away at the far end was another door; it too was locked. Not that it would have made much difference, through a large window on the left of the room Giles, Kennedy and Willow watched Darla as she tried it. Faith let go off the teenagers; piled on a table, the only furniture in the room, was a pile of medieval weapons. Faith picked up a blade and swung it through the air, it was well balanced. She looked into the camera, "Thanks for the weapons Giles. I know just where I’m going to put it." There was a chortle from a speaker, "I’m afraid not Faith. Our acquaintance is at the end. You see the door at the far end." "Yeah, we see it," nodded Faith. "Well it goes to the demon cells. I’m about to open it and open the first cell. Then when you’ve killed them I’ll open the second cell. And then the third. We have close to a hundred cells here. Willow thinks you’ll be dead by four. I rate you higher than that and think you’ll make it to ten." "You bastard," hissed Faith. "Quiet," replied Giles, "As they don’t say in dear old blighty, toodle pip." There was silence for a second, "What now?" asked Lilah plaintively. "Poppy, Darla grab those weapons – you’re beside me. Amy, Tara concentrate on your spells. The rest of you stand behind us, we’ll hold them as long as we can." "Which won’t be long," said Lilah, her voice seeped with a resigned fatalism. There was a nod from Faith and her face set in a series of grim lines, "But if we’re going to go we’re not going quietly." The door at the end of the room opened and the first demons bounded through. * "DNA imprint confirmed," the door’s speaker confirmed and the entrance to the Initiative opened. Buffy let go off the teenager’s wrist and the girl’s hand slid off the panel, as she fell to the ground beside her unconscious colleague. The arm was at an unnatural right angle, "That’s broken," said Buffy, there was no emotion in her voice, "you ought to get it seen to." "Who are you?" gasped the teenager. "I’m Buffy. Buffy the Vampire Slayer," replied the blonde Mom. Then her foot lashed into the side of the side of the Slayer’s head and she joined her colleague in unconsciousness. Buffy stepped into the Initiative. It had been spruced up since she was last here, she thought, but still the same type of psychotic lunatics in charge, only the names changed. She jogged down the corridor, following the signs to the cells. She guessed that was where Giles and Willow were keeping her daughters and the others, she only hoped that they weren’t sharing them with a hungry demon. From out of a side corridor stepped two Slayers. They stared at Buffy open mouthed. An expression which they continued to hold as Buffy somersaulted to land behind them. They were turning towards her as she grabbed both their heads and cracked them together. Looking at the unconscious bodies, Buffy wondered whether to hide them. She tried a door. It was locked, with a keyhole rather than a DNA recognition system. She shrugged, Giles would know she was coming soon enough. She left them and carried on jogging down the corridor. A few minutes later there was a shriek of a siren, followed by calls of "Intruder. Alert:" from the speakers on the walls. So much for the element of surprise Buffy thought. A sign pointed the way to the cell control room. Buffy followed it, racing up the stairs two at a time. Half way up a door opened and Slayer stood at the top. Buffy didn’t pause, but ran up slamming into the teenager so hard that the breath was knocked out of her. As the Slayer gasped, Buffy grabbed her hair and threw her down the stairs. The teenager bounced down them and hit the wall, where she lay groaning and obviously out of the fight. At the end of the corridor was a door, with cell control emblazoned on its top. Buffy walked forward and opened it. She opened it and stepped in. A few consoles beeped and blinked odd coloured lights as she entered. At the far side Giles, Willow and Kennedy stood still unaware of Buffy. But they weren’t what Buffy’s eyes were drawn too. Through a glass pane stood her lover, blood poured from a scalp wound. Behind Faith were her daughters and Dawn, crouched over Darla, who was struggling to stand up, whilst clutching her ribs. By Faith’s side stood a teenager, she was cradling a sword and waiting. Tara and Amy were sitting cross-legged on the floor, even through the glass Buffy could hear their pants of exhaustion as a microphone on one of the consoles relayed it. Kate stood holding Lilah and making coos of encouragement as the lawyer sobbed in terror. Dead demons littered the floor. Giles turned round, his eyes widened, "Buffy," he said in surprise. Willow and Kennedy also turned, a scowl of annoyance on both their faces. "Let them go Giles," Buffy’s voice was firm, "Zoe, Emmy, Faith all of them." "I guess you got your Slayer’s powers back," Giles had recovered quickly from his surprise, "Join us and I’m sure we can come to some arrangement. If not…" His hand lightly touched a button. A door in the room that the prisoners were in opened and three vampires charged out. A sizzle of flame from Amy and Faith got the first one. Faith took out the second. The third was ducked Poppy’s swing. It grabbed the teenagers arm and Buffy heard her scream above the crack of bone. It’s teeth nearly ripped out her throat, before Darla managed to struggle to her feet and decapitate it. Buffy looked at Giles and Willow, Giles had been her mentor, Willow had been her best friend. It seemed so long ago she had fought demons at their sides. "We still fight evil Buffy," Giles continued, smiling broadly, "The world needs us, its needs us to protect it from the foul stench of demons. You saw what they are capable off, what they’ll do if we don’t destroy them. Sometimes we need to fight fire with fire. You remember Glory – how I had to kill a human to stop her? This is the same…" "You know Giles I’m going to say to you what I ought to have said when you first introduced yourself as my Watcher." "What’s that?" Giles smile didn’t falter as he looked at his protégé. "Fuck off and die." Giles took a step back, as if he had been struck and the colour drained from his face, "Buffy… Buffy…" he turned to Kennedy, his face suddenly sad and old looking, "Kill her." Kennedy took a step forward as Willow muttered an incantation. Before Buffy’s eyes the Slayer’s skin rippled and turned grey. Buffy took a swing of her fist. And swore. It had been like hitting stone. She stepped back, her knuckles were bleeding. "You can’t stop me Buffy," Kennedy said, "I’m better, stronger, and definitely tougher." Buffy was too slow to miss Kennedy’s fist. She tried to roll with it, somersaulting back on her hands, but even so she could taste the blood in her mouth and feel the pain in her lip. Coming closer Kennedy punched. This time Buffy dodged, feeling a blast of air as the other’s fist zoomed millimetres above her head. Kennedy’s foot lashed out, catching Buffy in the ribs. The blonde was lifted up the force and slammed into the plastic glass. She could feel it wobble under the impact and barely made it to her feet before Kennedy came close again. Buffy felt the rabbit punches hammer into her chest, cracking at her ribs and sending intense sparks of agony through her body. Slayers never give up she told herself. She curled into a ball as Kennedy stood over her. The other Slayer paused, "I told you I was better." "You were wrong," replied Buffy. She uncurled herself, so quickly that Kennedy didn’t have time to react, and grabbed hold of the others waist. Using all her strength Buffy held Kennedy above her head and threw her through the window. The slayer hurtled through the air and landed with a crash into the far wall. Dust leaked from the new cracks and Kennedy lay still. "You bitch," screamed Willow. A tag of fire went from her hands scorching the floor where Buffy had been seconds before. The Slayer landed next to Willow, her elbow jutted out and Willow fell backwards clutching her broken nose and crying in pain. "Give it up Giles," Buffy stepped over Willow and walked towards him. In response Giles just picked up a sword and swung it in front of him, "Buffy, when did you decide to become a friend of demons?" "I guess it was when you forgot that the Slayer’s job is to fight evil, not the innocent." Giles screamed in rage and chopped the sword down. It was easy for Buffy to avoid. She planted an uppercut under Giles chin and he was lifted bodily to land on one of the consoles. The sword, had flown from his hand, for a second it twisted in the air and then it plunged down, straight through his heart and into the console. "Emergency," squawked the computer, "demon cells open. Emergency close down in two minutes, one fifty nine." "Come on," yelled Buffy helping Zoe through the broken window, "We’ve got to get out of here." Faith hoisted up Poppy on her shoulders, whilst Amy and Tara supported Darla. As they started to leave the control room Buffy headed over to Willow. The redhead was sitting on her knees staring at Kennedy’s unconscious form, "Kennedy, Kennedy," she kept repeating. Buffy grabbed her arm, "Let’s go Willow. We haven’t much time." The witch shrugged her free, "I can’t leave Kennedy." "She’s made off stone, she’s too heavy," Buffy gripped at Willow and pulled her up. Again the witch shrugged her free, "Oh Buffy, I’m so sorry. We did it for the best you know," she smiled at Buffy and she looked like her old self. There was a cry of shrieking rage from the door of the cells and in stepped an eight-foot and very angry red demon. "Go Buffy," said Willow, "I’ll hold them off." Dawn grabbed Buffy’s arm, "Let’s go." Buffy turned and ran. Behind her she could hear Willow chanting an incantation. The escape was a kaleidoscope of panic. From everywhere demons were appearing, cutting down Slayers as they fled. Buffy stayed at the back of her little group hustling them to entrance as the clock counted down. They just made it, Buffy diving under the concrete door just before it slammed shut. Around them stood about thirty Slayers, Buffy gulped, there were way too many to fight. But, not according to Emmy, "Any of you bitches blink out of turn my Mom’s going to ram your teeth so far down your throat they’ll come out ass." The slayers looked at each other and then nodded obediently. Buffy wrapped her arms round her daughters as Faith came up and kissed her, "Glad to be a Slayer again?" the brunette asked Buffy shook her head, "I can’t wait to become just a normal suburban Mom. I was a Slayer for the day, because it was needed. Now, well there’s plenty of other Slayers around to do that job. They just need someone who’ll lead them properly this time." She stared pointdly at Faith who put her hands up in mock surrender, "Sure B, whatever you say. I’m not sure I’ll be any good at it though." "You’ll be fine," grinned Buffy, "You always were – you just don’t always believe it." * A year later: "Should you be drinking Dawn?" Tara asked. "Don’t worry honey," Dawn patted the bump in front of her dress protectively, "it’s non-alcoholic, the baby’s safe." Tara asked "You sure? Okay; do you want some nibbles – don’t get up I’ll get them" Dawn stuck out a tongue at her retreating lover’s back, "It’s a celebration you know," she said cheekily. Buffy laughed and patted her sister’s knee, "Don’t worry about it. Bel was really protective when I was pregnant." She patted her own tummy, "And you can’t see it yet, but me and Faith are going to be having one as well." "Oh my God," gasped Dawn, "Have you told her?" "I think she may have guessed as she keeps opening doors for me, though I did tell her when we cast the spell it wasn’t one hundred percent each time. I’ll think I’ll tell her tomorrow morning; I don’t want her getting too protective on our wedding night. Speaking of which…" Buffy stood up and kissed Faith. The brunette stood uncomfortably in her shimmering white wedding dress. She tugged at the neckline, "I can’t wait until I get this off." "Me neither," replied Buffy and laughed as her wife’s face went red, "but we’ll have to wait until our guests have gone." "I told Kate, we lend her and Lilah your book, once we’ve finished with it. Do you mind?" "Not at all. Though with the two of them setting up that private investigation business tracking down rogue demons for you I’m surprised they have time." "I guess they make time. Where are my stepdaughters by the way? I haven’t had time to thank them for their presents." Buffy shrugged, "A few minutes ago they were competing for the attention of the pretty barmaid. I hope they don’t get up to much whilst we’re away." "They’re grown up. Anyway I’ve asked Amy and Darla to pop in to check them whilst we’re gone." "That’s what I’m afraid off," said Buffy. Then before Faith could reply she took her in her arms and kissed her, "I love you Mrs Summers." "I love you too," replied the Slayer. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
