Title: Fighting For Survival
Author: AddictedtoBuffy
Rating: NC17
Pairing: Angel/Spike/Xander
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: Thankyou so much to my beta Bubbysbub who always helps to make this better.

Chapter Ten
Meanwhile, Spike, Cordelia and Xander had followed Willow’s directions towards where the meteorite had fallen. It was in a taped off section in a local park, but it was obvious that no authorities had come near there since the night before. There was a dead body lying not far from the crash, a brown, foul smelling substance (instead of ‘in his mouth’, how about we go gross and say ‘oozing from his mouth’ just cause a bit of gross is all fun fun fun!!) oozing from his mouth. They had a closer look at the meteorite and Spike made an interesting discovery.
“Its hollow inside.”
“So, uh, we're all thinking the same thing, right?” Cordelia asked, staying as far away from the meteorite as possible while still being close enough to the boys to be safe if something attacked.
“Festive piñata? Delicious candy?” Joked Xander, ‘why do things inevitably get more complicated?’ he asked himself.
“Something evil crashed to earth in this and then broke out and ... slithered away to do badness.” Cordelia answered shaking her head at her ex-boyfriends ill-timed humour.
“We don't really know about the slithered part,” argued Xander, picking an argument for old-times sake. He had missed Cordelia’s tell-it-like-I-see-it nature.
“Oh, no. I'm sure it frisked about like a fluffy lamb.” Cordelia answered sarcastically.
“I can smell something weird,” Spike noted, interrupting the slag-fest. “It’s probably the creature. I think I can track it, let’s go.” Without looking back he followed the faint trail, the other two coming up behind him.

Angel jumped out of the back of the van with the other demon, while the Spiny one and Gunn climbed down out of the cab. Angel wasn’t happy about the heist being tonight, it messed up Gunn’s plan, but at least he knew Gunn was watching his back just as he was watching Gunn’s. Hopefully they would be able to work out a way of stopping this heist before getting caught or the others got away with this shroud. Angel didn’t know anything about it, and he wished that they had been able to leave after the meeting or at least make a phone call. It was probable that someone at the hotel had found the info on this shroud. Gunn nudged him and Angel shook his head, clearing it, ready to focus back on the task in front of him.
They walked into the museum through the door Bob opened for them and moved cautiously down the hallway. After a little way they heard whistling, and one of the demons pulled a gun on Bob, who played along. The unsuspecting guard came whistling around the corner and stopped short at the scene in front of him.
“They got me Earl,” Bob yelled and before Earl could react he was hit, knocking him out. Spiny went to hit him again but Angel stopped his hand.
“You kill him and the cops will be crawling all over the place,” Angel offered as an explanation and after a nod, Spiny walked off. Angel looked down at Earl sadly, hating violence against an innocent human but it could not be avoided. There was no way he and Gunn could take down both of the strong demons and Bob without a chance of Gunn being shot and killed. If only Spike was there; with his childe at his side Angel would be much more confident of the outcome of a fight. They headed off and Angel quickly followed them. The rest of the heist went off without a hitch until Angel was in the main vault.
‘Did I just hear something?’ he wondered. ‘Wow!’ Angel thought. He had felt something trying to take control of his body, get inside his mind. Angel found himself changing into true face while attempting to shake whatever the presence was off. It took him a while before he was fully in control of himself again. Whatever it was had taken him by surprise. Angel knew that the presence must have something to do with the Shroud they were after. It couldn’t be just a coincidence when the shroud was the only mystical thing in this vault.
Quickly Angel moved over to the control box and pulled all the wires out meaning that the security precautions were dead. The door opened and the others walked in.
“I feel something weird in here,” Gunn commented and Angel couldn’t help but be impressed by Gunn’s senses when it came to the supernatural. For an ordinary human, they were extraordinary.
“Humans always got to *feel* something about everything. And they always got to tell you about it. 'I'm so happy - I'm so sad - I'm so scared.' Makes me sick." The Spiny demon commented. Angel rolled his eyes at the comment. Some demons were just so dumb, couldn’t he feel the waves of pure evil wafting up from the coffin in the middle of the vault? Angel took a deep breath and started to act like Angelus, he had fooled people once. He could do it again until the right moment to kill the demons came.
"Oh, now, I like it when they're scared! Makes them taste kind of - salty." Angel’s stomach rolled at the remembrance of how Angelus would make his victims terrified but kept his outside mask firmly in place. The one Angel had mentally dubbed as Spiny got right into his face.
"Did I ask for your opinion, you overgrown leech?"
"Oh, please! Altoids, aisle 4!" Angel yelled getting into character. Ugly was the one to be the voice of reason.
"We don't have time for this! - Let's get it and go."
Gunn could definitely feel something in the room, something evil. The box was giving the wiggins as he stared down at the imprint of the demons face.
"When are they gonna start making some pretty demons?" Gunn asked trying to disguise the fact he wanted far away from the coffin. Angel’s behaviour was unsettling as well. Gunn knew in his head that it was all an act but some primitive survival system was trying to tell him to get the hell away from the vampire.
"On the count of three - 1..." Gunn quickly grabbed a corner and looked over at Angel. ‘Shit, why are his eyes yellow?’ he wondered.
"You about to turn or something?" Gunn whispered to Angel.
"No." Angel whispered back. It was taking an effort to keep the mystical presence at bay and Angel was stronger with the demon so they were working together, hence the yellow eyes. Unfortunately Angel couldn’t explain that to Gunn with the other’s there. Angel just hoped that Gunn would be able to trust him despite the way he was acting.
"2" The demon continued counting.
"You don't look like 'no.'" Gunn pushed needing reassurance that his boss was in control.
"Shut up and lift, Lester!" Angel hoped that reminding Gunn of their task would stop him from pushing.
"Don't give me orders, Elvis!" Unfortunately Gunn took it the wrong way, escalating the situation.
"3." They all lifted the extremely heavy coffin though Gunn was not at all happy and Angel was forced to act the same.

Willow, Tara and Anya opened the taped side door at the museum and sneaked in.
"So it is tonight. They must be somewhere,” Willow began but then an evil presence seemed to roll over the three of them. “Inside. Oh, I'm sorry - I'm - I'm feeling a little..."
"Me too. I think it's the altitude." Tara answered waiting for her head to stop feeling like it was going to fly off her head and float away.
"Right. The altitude here at sea level." Anya commented. The three girls glanced at each other before cracking up.
"Let's - let's not lose focus." Willow reminded them trying to remember why they were there.
"Maybe we should split up." Anya suggested.
"Ah, no, too dangerous. We - we better stick together." Tara didn’t want any Tigers, or Lions or Bears Oh MY! ‘What was I thinking?’ she thought confused.
"Right." Anya agreed to whatever it was she was agreeing too. The other two nodded clearly agreeing and they all moved off in separate directions expecting the others to follow.
*****
A silver car pulled up to the side of the museum and Detective Kate Lockley got out. She didn’t know what Angel was up to, but ever since her fathers death she had decided that he couldn’t be as squeaky clean as he pretended. She was determined to find out what he was hiding and then she would have a reason to stake him.
*****
Two minutes later a Queller demon slithered through the partially open door. It had gotten rid of the crazy patients in the hospitable and had thought its work was done until it was woken up five minutes ago by crazy waves that only it could pick up, coming from this building. The Queller had one mission and one mission only and that was to eradicate all the insane people in this area of the planet and that was what it was going to do.
*****
Another five minutes later and Spike, Xander and Cordelia came tearing round the corner before Spike abruptly stopped.
“It’s gone in there,” Spike said gesturing towards the still open door, “but,” he continued, sniffing around near the truck sitting near the entrance and then the door itself. “I think Angel is in there with Gunn and some demons.”
“Great, just great. If only we had been five minutes earlier we would have got the creature while it had been asleep.”
“It gets worse Xan. Willow, Tara and Anya went through this door as well as another female, someone I don’t know.” Cordelia had been investigating the silver car parked near by and saw a bill on the passenger seat that identified the driver.
“It’s Kate, she’s a local detective who knows about Angel and doesn’t like him much.” She explained to their questioning looks.
“Let’s just get in there, stop the demon and get the others out, before Angel and Gunn’s cover is blown, okay?” At the nods from the other two, Spike led the way inside, wondering why the demon had come here when it was targeting crazy people.
*****
Angel was lifting the box down the hallway with the others, racking his brains for a way to stop them and catch the demons off guard. What they needed was a distraction and then it came to him. ‘Hopefully Gunn will play along,’ he thought.
"Try holding up your corner, Les." Angel grumbled loudly.
"Who died and made you corner monitor?" Gunn sniped back, whatever the unseen entity was, it was starting to get to him.
"Are you two gonna get married or what?" Spiny asked, clearly annoyed and then Gunn got it; Angel was deliberately trying to piss them off. Well two could play that game.
"Same old story. Vampires always pushing people around. Think the world is theirs."
"From what I've seen of this world they can have it." One of the other demons chimed in.
"Well, I visited Topkapi once..." Bob the security guard decided to pipe up, but Angel was staring at Gunn hoping to urge him on to more.
"Nothing but take, take, take - take your blood, take your sister!" At this point Gunn knew he wasn’t making a lot of sense but he was trying to hold it all together and he trusted Angel to have his back.
"Somebody shut that human up!"
"You want to take somebody, huh?” Gunn could feel anger flooding through him and he had no choice but to let it take control completely. His last thoughts before the madness took over were that he hoped he hadn’t let Angel down, and that he would never see Wesley again. The next instant he let his corner go and turned to yell at Angel because he was there. “Let’s see you take me!"
"It's slipping!" Announced Bob-who-states-the-obvious.
"Don't drop it!"
"Hold it! Hold it!"
Gunn didn’t hear any of this as he tackled Angel and the box dropped to the ground. The glass cracked and a purple mist seeped out but Angel was too busy trying to get through to Gunn.
"Oops."
When that didn’t work Angel pulled Gunn up by the throat and pushed him up against the wall realising that he wouldn’t be able to get through to Gunn now, not until the effects wore off but maybe he could use this in his favour before Gunn blew their cover out of the water.
"You know I'm getting pretty tired of this 'vampires killed my sister so now I'm all entitled' song. Don't you know anything else, like say MacArthur Park?" Oops, ‘maybe the evil is getting to me too,’ Angel thought, when he realised what he said. A quick glance told him that no one had picked up on it; they were obviously suffering the effects of the same thing as well.
"Get your hands off my throat." Gunn yelled, aware of the whispering in the background, if only he could hear what it said, maybe it would lead him to a pot of treasure.
"Ah, ah, ah! You're gonna play nice? - Huh?" Angel asked in his best Angelus voice.
"Cool." Gunn answered wondering if there was peppermint ice cream. Angel watched him for a moment aware that he was probably less logical than Dru at the moment, before letting him drop back onto his feet.
"We can't leave it here, we have to move it! Someone else will come along! Let’s move it!" Panicked Ugly, feeling decidedly ill.
Gunn suddenly pulled out a stake and attacked Angel from behind. Angel had been waiting for something like this, having worked out that the crazy evil thing wanted people to do violent acts towards each other. He batted the stake out of Gunn's hand and kicked him into the wall.
"Kill him. Kill the human! Kill it!" Yelled the Peanut Gallery, fully caught up in the blood lust. Angel moved his fist back to strike Gunn and knock him unconscious before he could do any more damage but Ugly cocked the gun at them. Angel had no choice but to take a step back away from Gunn. He needed to get the gun off Ugly or they would never be able to stop the others.
"Case." Ugly said, as if nothing had happened. Bob pulled out a rope urged on by the whispering.
"All right-y, partners, it’s roping time! Tonight I will be playing the part of the poor defenceless calf. Who gets to be the cowboy?" As Ugly began to tie Bob’s hands behind his back, Bob urged him on.
"Just make it tight. Okay, cowboy? It's got to be tight. It's got to look real. Ha, ha, ha! I'm not the bad guy, I'm the good guy!"
"I'm the good guy - no wait - the bad guy!" Angel said half to himself, it was getting harder to think straight by the minute, but Angel held fast to the thought of his lovers waiting for him back at the hotel and knew that he would make it through this just to see them again.
"Pick it up!" Ugly demanded as he moved back towards the coffin.
"No, wait. You've got to hit me. - Look, somebody's gotta hit me! Come on, man, you got to hit me. Do it. Come on, make it real!" Spiny was sick of all the human’s yapping, he had to stop them now. Coolly, he walked over to Bob and twisted his head right off.
Dropping the head Spiny commented, "Looks real to me."
