Spike’s POV
He watched helplessly as the medics with Xander leading the
way rushed into the clearing. He squatted back down next to Buffy and kept a
soft touch on her shoulder. When the first paramedic arrived next to him, he
spoke quietly to him, never once turning away from Buffy.
He struggled to keep all emotion out of his voice as he relayed
what he could, “She… she was naked and shivering when I came across her. I
placed my coat over her. It wasn’t enough so I had Willow bring a wool blanket. I noticed that
her leg was tied down, but I didn’t try to touch it. Everything should still be
intact. She came to for a bit but was really out of it, like she was drugged.
After saying a few words, she just passed out.”
He felt helpless as the medic thanked him and then gently
nudged him out of the way. The medic proceeded to talk in medical terms to the
others that were around. Within a few short minutes, Buffy was unchained and
lifted onto a gurney.
As the medics started wheeling her away, Spike panicked.
“Wait!” he yelled, “I want to ride with you.”
Suddenly, he felt a hand on his arm. He spun around and was
startled by the sight of two uniformed police. He was even more surprised when
they informed him that no one could leave until they had been questioned.
Willow,
of course, was one of the first to be interviewed. They tried to usher her away
from Spike, but she refused. Her fingers clung so tightly to his arm that her
nail left crescent shaped marks on his skin. After much deliberation, the
police had finally just sat them both down and proceeded to completely ignore
Spike.
Spike was having a hard time sitting still. He was hearing a
lot more about the situation than he ever wanted to. The line of questioning
that the police were taking was also causing his temper to flare.
The police went straight to the point, grilling Willow about Buffy’s
pervious experiences. Perhaps she had started
out willing, and this was just a sex game that went a little out of control. They
also asked if she and Buffy were into drugs and then insinuated that this was
the work of their dealer. One even went as far as to suggest that perhaps this
was the work of a pimp.
After that comment, the room erupted in screaming. It did
not quiet down until the officers apologized and tried to explain that they
were just asking all the questions that were standard in a case like this.
Spike doubted the professionalism of the officers,
particularly when they started asking about what clothing Buffy had been
wearing. They snorted when Willow gave them the
description of her friend’s evening wear.
It was then that Spike knew it was going to be a long night.
Stupid sods already
have this case wrapped up in their mind, he thought angrily.
Spike nearly jumped for joy when they told Willow that she was excused. He held her
close and asked her to keep a careful eye on Buffy at the hospital.
“I will be there as soon as they let me out of this place,”
he assured her, and with that final word of goodbye, Spike gave his sister a
peck on the cheek and sent her to the hospital to watch Buffy.
The next few hours passed in a haze. At first, he was very
docile, understanding the importance of interviewing everyone. However, as the
night grew on, and dawn was fast approaching, his admiration turned to
frustration.
With an exasperated sigh, he stood up and spoke directly to
the officer, who was currently playing twenty questions.
“Look. I already answered all these questions. If you don’t
believe me, then pick up the phone and call the Seattle police.” He was starting to get
pissed, and it was showing. “I already told you! Angel, the real one, is
sitting at the Pike Street
station. They are waiting for your call.”
Spike was completely pissed by now. I’ve done all I bloody can. There’s no talking to these people.
To the uninitiated, the look on his face did not speak of
the anger that was boiling just under his skin. The first telltale sign was
when he started running his fingers through his hair. This was a sure sign that
things were not going well. In fact, many men had fled at this sight.
Trying to control his temper, (Cause landing in jail for decking a cop won’t help Buffy, he
thought) Spike took a deep breath and
asked in an even voice, “Am I under arrest?”
As soon as he heard the word “no,” he turned around and
walked right out of the house.
Once he had left the house, he pulled out his phone and
called Willow.
It rang only once before he heard a quiet voice whisper, “Hello?”
“Red, how’s Buffy? Have you heard anything?” He was anxious
to find out what had gone on while he had been stuck at the house being
questioned by the “lustrous” SPD.
He listened as she explained all that had happened in his
absence. After a few minutes, he was completely infuriated. Hell, he knew Buffy
wasn’t a saint, but this was completely absurd. He curtly told Willow he was ten minutes away and not to
worry. He would take care of everything.
I just hope I can.
Willow’s
POV
She had thought that this night couldn’t get any worse. Buffy
had finally been found. What could possibly destroy the happiness from this
miracle? Then the police had shown up, and all the joy she had felt at finding
Buffy alive had been sucked out of her.
She had foolishly believed the nightmare was over when the
paramedics and police charged into the clearing and started carting Buffy to
the hospital. She was woken out of her stupor when she heard the panicked
filled voice of her brother calling out that he wanted to go with Buffy in the
ambulance. However, it was not going to be that easy. From then on, nothing
would be easy. Of course, at the time, they had no clue. They were still
optimistic that things would get tidied up quickly, and then everything could
be over. Little did any of them realize, but their night was not coming to a
close as they had hoped. No, this was only the beginning.
At first, Willow
was glad that she was one of the first to be questioned. She had the background
story and was the only one (besides Buffy) that knew a timeline of the night’s
events. Plus, she admitted to herself, the faster she got questioned, the
sooner it would all be over.
She had to admit that she didn’t act as gracefully or as
courageously as she thought she would. When the police told her that they
needed to question her, she held onto Spike’s arm. No matter what the police
said, she would not let go. She firmly refused. She really couldn’t understand
it, but she just did not want to be anywhere alone with these officers, especially
not the younger one. He looked nervous and had shifty eyes.
As the night dragged on, the officers’ questions grew more
and more pointed. I know we were stupid
for coming here, but I never saw the guy
Buffy was speaking too. I really thought he was Angel. And we are not really
kids, I mean come on, we are eighteen. Most kids are in college by eighteen.
It is not our fault that our birthdays fell
just days after the cut off. The stupid rules said we had to be five before
September 1st. We just missed it by days.
Willow
felt Spike begin to tense up next to her. She quickly realized that everyone
was staring at her. She apologized and asked them to repeat the question.
She soon wished she hadn’t asked them to repeat it. The nerve of those… those… bastards! She
was mad when they asked if this could have been a sex game that got out of hand
(which she thought that was just tactless). Then they questioned her about
drugs, which, ok, maybe she could see the reason behind that. But to ask if
they were prostitutes and maybe having a problem with a pimp or john, that was
it!
She was glad when they let her go shortly after that. She
felt bad for leaving Spike, but she knew that he wanted her to go see about
Buffy too. Thank goodness that Xander was already done with his interview so he
drove her. They left her car in the parking lot. She was really in no condition
to drive anyway.
The drive to the hospital was a quiet one. Neither Willow nor Xander really
felt like talking. But it was not uncomfortable. It was as if there existed a
silent, mutual understanding that they did not want or need to try to fill the
empty air with pointless noise.
It took about fifteen minutes to drive to the hospital. As
worried as they were, neither really wanted the drive to be over. They wanted
to take this time as a breather, and though neither would admit it, they were
also a little afraid to find out what was going on with Buffy.
But they both knew that they could not put this off any
longer. It was with heavy hearts and trepidation that they parked the car and
walked into the emergency room.
Willow
froze as soon as she stepped into the waiting room. Her parents were sitting in
the cold plastic chairs, and they didn’t look happy.
“Mom, Dad, what...” she was about to say more when her
parents interrupted.
Willow
could not believe her ears. Buffy’s parents had called them down as soon as
they got the call.
What shocked her most of all was the unfeeling look her
parents were giving her. They were talking about how much they were
disappointed in her, and how they just knew Buffy was a bad influence. But what
really shocked her was when they informed her that she was no longer able to
associate with Buffy; and if they found out she was, then she would no longer
be able to live with them.
This couldn’t be
happening. This all must be a dream. Yes that’s it! I am going to wake up any
minute. I will be home in my bed, and
all will be back to normal.
Willow
was not that lucky. She was still reeling from the shock when her parents
dropped another bombshell. She couldn’t believe what they were telling her. Buffy’s
parents had disowned her. They were fed up with her behavior and were kicking
her out.
Buffy, Willow thought
frantically as she started running through the hospital doors. She heard her
parents calling after her, but she paid them no mind.
It was not until she was in the hallway that she realizes
she had no clue where Buffy was. However, she quickly found that she did not
need to worry. The screaming coming form Buffy’s mother was enough to guide her.
She was about to rush in to her friend’s defense and tell
them that their daughter had just been brutally raped and did not need this
bullshit right now. That all she needed was their love and understanding, but she
never made it. Her dad, in a show of uncharacteristic power, grabbed her arm
and yanked her towards him.
“Leave with us now, or don’t come home ever again!”
Willow
wanted to say, “Fine, I guess I won’t be coming home.” She even opened and
closed her mouth a few times, willing the words to come tumbling out. But she
was scared and knew she couldn’t help Buffy if she was homeless too. Spike will know what to do. I’ll call him as
soon as I get home. She looked towards the door that stood between her and
the tirade she could still hear. Please
forgive me Buffy. I love you.
As soon as she took two steps, her phone rang. It was Spike.
She quickly picked it up and told
Spike what was going on. She could tell he was mad at their parents and at Buffy’s.
After telling him she had to go, he promised to get to the hospital and take
care of everything.
Willow
started to feel a little better. If anyone could fix this, she was sure Spike
could.
