Chapter 10: Realizations

Chapter 10: Realizations

Buffy was lying completely still in bed, Giles holding her hand.
Xander was sitting beside her with his arms around Willow, who was in his lap and couldn’t stop crying as she told them what she had seen.

“And he seem to welcome the pain, the torture, he seem resigned to it, and that made it so much worse, he kept crying though, especially when Dawn appeared, and he smiled, he smiled a her, told her he loved her”.

The sobs overtook her and she had to stop. Taking a deep breath she continued. “And when the other Buffy started he told her he loved her and he laid down for her, smiling while the tears kept running down his face, a look of pure love in his eyes, he just lay there like he deserved what she was doing to him. And he didn’t scream, how could he not scream?” Willow’s eyes were very wide, she was horror stricken by was she had witnessed and she was very grateful to have Xander’s arms around her, she needed the contact, needed to be held.

Xander had tears in his eyes as well, and he couldn’t let go of Willow. He felt so sick he wanted to run to the bathroom and trough up, but he refused to let go of Will, she needed him, so he kept taking deep breaths and concentrating on her words.

Giles was beyond pale, his mind trying to make sense of Willow’s words. He felt sick to his stomach, and to be honest he felt sick to his soul. All he had believed to be true, all the beliefs he had based his life on were suddenly put to question, and he felt like the floor had been taken from under his feet and replaced by a wide chasm into which he was falling. Nothing he knew made sense any more.

But in the mist of all this uncertainty, there was something to hold on to, something real, the hand of his slayer lying between his. Cold and clammy as it was, devoid of her warmth and her strength, it was nonetheless real. It was a link to that which meant everything to him, and to that which he had almost lost because he refused to let go of what he considered truth beyond doubt, truth beyond question, unchangeable.

He should have known. He should have known that nothing could be known in its entirety, that there was always something knew to discover, to learn. He used to praise himself for his constant quest for knowledge, and he had been blinded to the changes taking place before his very eyes.

Willow’s words the day before had opened his eyes. Her words now had opened his heart. Something MUST be done.
