Chase was not exactly your model human. She was bitchy, self-centered,
vain, and impatient with just about every person on earth.
But that's how he liked her. Cordelia was perfect as far as he was
concerned. Spike knew from the moment that he laid eyes on her, they were
meant to be together.
The Bronze was pulsing with music every night of the week and tonight was
no exception. The DJ was spinning up song after song and the sweet smell of
alcohol and sweat filled the air. Cordelia was with the rest of the
Cordettes in the middle of the dance floor. Her dress was close to the
legal description of minimum clothing allowed in public. The black silk
felt good against her body as she moved to the music. She knew she looked
amazing in the dress and that only added to the dress. There were boys,
men, girls, and women looking at her, she knew this... she loved this. She
dismissed them all as unworthy and continued to dance with her friends.
I need time...joy. I need space... love. I need... me....
ACTION!!
"Overprotected" by Britney Spears started playing when she spotted someone
new. He was walking through the hoards of people near the bar. 'Who is
that?' she wondered, but then he was gone. Cordelia thought maybe she had
just imagined it, and went back to dancing.
I can't help the way I feel cause my life has been so
overprotected.
She definitely saw him... he was right by Buffy, just a second ago... and
then gone again. She looked through the sea of faces and, again, she
couldn't find his.
What am I to do with my life.
You will find it out don't worry.
How'm I supposed to know what's right?
You just got to do it your way.
"I need a drink." She tossed back as exi exited the dance floor. "Evian."
she told the bartender and sat on the stool, still a little breathless from
the dancing. As she sat the music changed to one of her favorite songs, she
had always liked it and never really knew why.
"The ice is thin come on dive in
underneath my lucid skin
the cold is lost, forgotten
Hours pass days pass time stands still
light gets dark and darkness fills
my secret heart forbidden..."
There was something about that song that had always felt like liquid sex to
her. She wasn't sure why, but even now, her mind filled with images and she
closed her eyes and swayed to the music. Then out of nowhere she heard a
voice whispering in her ear.
"I'm real." the voice said but when she opened her eyes, there was no one
there. She could have sworn that she felt someone breathing on her neck but
she was sitting alone.
"I think you worried for me then
the subtle ways that I'd give in but I know
you liked the show"
She couldn't believe it, just the thought of this mystery man was getting
her more worked up than any real person ever had. She felt like he was all
around her. She tried to look through the crowd but he was nowhere to be
seen. Cordelia sat there, drinking her water, trying to calm her heightened
nerves. She wasn't used to this kind of emotional involvement in a night at
the Bronze. This was her place to have fun and not think about the
consequences. She could come to the Bronze any night and have men fawn over
her all night and then go home and not think about a single one of them.
Sunnydale's queen was sure she would be thinking about him tonight. He
seemed to be made of mist, whenever she turned her head to see him he was
gone.
"Okay Cordelia, you're losing it. There's no one here. It's just a song."
She told herself, all the while hoping she was wrong.
"Sorry luv, but did you say something?"
Cordelia looked up and standing right there in front of her was the man she
had been longing for. He wasn't going to disappear this time. He had to be
real. She reached out her hand and ran it down his leather jacket. He was
oddly cold, but she didn't really think anything of it. It was the middle
of December and it was cold, even in Sunnydale. He followed her hand with
his eyes and then smiled at her. If she hadn't been sitting down already,
she would have been a puddle on the floor. She was finally able to look
into his eyes. They had laughter in them and something else she couldn't
quite see. It was like the truth seen through a silk shawl and she could
make out the shape but none of the details. It was at that moment she
realized she had her hand on a complete stranger and she still hadn't
answered his question. Cordelia pulled her hand away quickly and smiled her
most stunning smile.
"Oh, I just said, this is a good song." She would have felt like a complete
idiot if it weren't for those eyes. The way they looked in to hers, there
was something them in that made everything seem like it would be wonderful
and terrible all at the same time.
"tied down to this bed of shame
you tried to move around the pain but oh
your soul is anchored"
"I like this one too. There's something so sensual about the way her voice
blends with the music." His eyes traveled her body like a painter covering
every inch of her. "Dance?" He held out his hand and she took it as she
looked straight into those eyes, crystal blue and fierce.
"The only comfort is the moving of the river
You enter into me, a lie upon your lips
offer what you can, I'll take all that I can get
only a fool's here... "
He guided her onto the dance floor with his hand on the small of her back.
She had to stop herself from jumping at the slightest touch of his body to
hers. The music swelled as they neared the dance floor and it felt like
nothing but the song and he surrounded her. The rest of the club faded into
oblivion and they were the only two people in the world. She didn't think
about school, makeup, popularity, or clothes. The way his arms were around
her, the touch of his skin to hers, the sway of their bodies in the
music... these were the things on Cordelia's mind. She rested her head on
his shoulder and let him guide her in the dance.
"I don't like your tragic sighs
as if your god has passed you by well hey fool
that's your deception
your angels speak with jilted tongues
the serpent's tale has come undone you have no
strength to squander"
His hands glided up her arms and to her neck. He looked into her eyes as if
asking permission. The answer was there. He pulled her impossibly closer
and touched his lips to hers. The breath, the song, and the touch of their
kiss fused into one perfect moment and she let the feeling take her over as
the embrace intensified. Every part of her body wanted to be touching his.
It seemed as if her skin pulled her closer to him. Her body wanted to
caress as much of him as she possibly could. His hands were down her back,
his fingers drawing small circles on her exposed skin.
Reality hit Cordelia all at once. She didn't even know who this man was.
She was kissing a complete stranger in the middle of a club and her mind
was full of much more interesting things to do with this man. She pulled
away from him with a gasp. His eyes were full of wanting and mystery as he
pulled her back into his grasp. His hands moved up her arms. One wound
itself in her hair while the other was doing wd thd things to the back and
sides of her neck.
"Who are you?" she breathed as she nuzzled her cheek into his hand. His
fingertips ran along her jaw and his lips followed the same path until he
took possession of her mouth once again. His lips touched her cheeks, her
eyes, and then he claimed her lips once more before drawing back to look at
her. His blue eyes searched her face.
"William." He whispered into her ear as he pulled her close to him. "My
name is William, Cordelia." Her shock was sated with the kiss that
followed. As she deepened the kiss he lured her even closer and then he was
gone.
She looked up and she was standing in the middle of a crowded dance floor
all flushed and confused. As the song finished she walked off the dance
floor on shaking legs. After what she had experienced she was proud of
herself for even being able to walk. She picked up her purse and jacket and
walked out the door. Her head was still spinning from the intensity of her
experienced. She walked to her car alone slightly unsure of what had
happened. Cordelia could only find truth in her reflection in the mirror.
Her lipstick was smeared and her skin was flushed. Her key found its way
into the ignition and when the car started she heard a familiar tune. The
sound of Sarah McLachlan's voice wove itself into her mind as she leaned
back into her seat.
"The only comfort is the moving of the river
You enter into me, a lie upon your lips
offer what you can, I'll take all that I can get
only a fool's here to stay
only a fool's here to stay
only a fool's here... "
It was only after the last notes of the song had finished that she opened
her eyes and saw the rose on her passenger seat. Underneath it was a piece
of paper. She took the note in her hand and opened it.
I am real. We'll meet again.
William
