Title: Slumber Party
Mountains, sand, hot sun overhead, a spherical ball of light, swirling, transparent, cutting gleaming swaths through a brilliant blue sky. Birds, flying. Sandals. Desert. Hot, scorching, Tara walking through in the desert, piles of bones, ancient fires, a prowling primordial lifeform. Playing cards, tarot, her friends, her hands.
Buffy woke up on the floor, wondering how she had gotten there. She sat up, recalling banter with some weird ancient Chosen One. Something about firemen and shampoo. They fought, but mostly it didn't impress her. She was okay, though, it was just a bad dream. She gathered herself up and stood, looking at the scattered remnants of a party. The television had long since retired to the snowstorm channel. That was when something caught her eye. Something black in color, wrapped in white rags that looked utterly ridiculous, crouched as though it could never stand up straight. It was just a shadow; it vanished.
She picked up the remote and turned off the television. Something creeped again, made the house creek. She looked around slowly, had an eerie feeling that whatever was stalking her was behind her, and crept closer to the couch. She knocked Spike's feet aside to make room, making the vampire grunt, and stole a small blanket, covering herself. Whatever it was had stopped moving around, but she was determined to stay up and kill it if necessary.
Buffy woke up on a couch, disoriented. She looked around at her friends, Xander, Spike and Willow. Popcorn was scattered, mainly from Spike and Xander throwing it at each other. They'd been wired but apparently they didn't last as late into the night as they had hoped. Spike actually wasn't invited, but had whined until he could crash with them and eat all of their popcorn. Giles was supposed to be there as well, but since it was his house she supposed that he had gone to bed in his own room.
She pinched herself. Now she was really awake, but she wasn't sure if she had really woken up the first time or not. Spike's feet were moved the way she left them, so she decided on the worst and stood up, blanket and all. Something thumped in the darkness. Acting on impulse and the dislike of being left in the dark, Buffy wrapped the blanket around her and scooted up the stairs to Giles' room.
She hesitated to knock and opened the door instead, leaving it open a crack. Giles was asleep in his nightclothes, but not for long when Buffy fell into bed alongside him. He woke up amongst the shaking of the bed and looked at Buffy strangely. "Buffy?"
"I had a bad dream. Scoot over."
"Are the others still downstairs?" Giles questioned wearily. "Buffy, this is slightly childish."
"You're supposed to be my watcher, not my… my childish behavior meter. Be quiet."
Giles sighed a bit, giving Buffy room and she stole a pillow. "Aren't the other downstairs?"
"Yeah, but they're all downstairs. Plus, I thought I saw and heard something move down there. Something not us. I think it was a big ugly."
"In which case you should slay it and go to sleep," Giles suggested sleepily. "Aren't you worried about leaving the others alone down there?"
"They're all together," Buffy snorted. "Spike and Xander and them. They can handle it. I'm worried about you. You're all alone up here, with more covers than one man needs. Stop hogging."
"How very considerate of you."
"That's me, considerate Buffy."
They made as though to fall asleep again. Giles tried and for some part succeeded, but Buffy's disturbance left him in a very light sleep, so he woke whenever she shifted about. Buffy herself was wired once again, watching every shadow for any sign of demon likeliness. She sat up straight when the bedroom door opened and Giles groaned softly, woken once again.
"Buffy?"
"Willow?"
Willow stepped into the room, leaving the door all but shut. "What're you doing up here?"
"Trying to sleep," Buffy said, realizing what it looked like. "I'm not jumping Giles or anything."
"I didn't think so," Willow replied, giving her friend a funny look since she hadn't thought of that. "I just had a bad dream and when I woke up, you weren't down there."
"Sorry," Buffy shrugged. "Want to join me?"
Willow all too eagerly trotted across the room and hopped into bed next to Buffy.
"Your feet are cold," Buffy complained.
"Giles' kitchen is cold," Willow replied with a pout. "I made myself cocoa; it always calms me down. Guess it was a little too scary down there."
"You left Xander alone with the Bleached Menace?" Buffy laughed.
"Please go to sleep, girls," Giles sighed. "It's extremely late."
"Sorry," Willow whispered, snuggling down under the covers. "This'll be just like when we used to have sleepovers."
"Yup," Buffy beamed, cuddling close to Willow.
"You're really warm," Willow laughed to Buffy. "This is fun. One big slumber party. Isn't this fun, Giles?"
"Ugh."
"He's tired," Buffy whispered to Willow, withholding a giggle. "If he were awake he'd realize he had two girls in his bed."
They fell silent for a long time. At least, it felt like a long time. Giles had dozed off again and Buffy was near the brink of sleep but wouldn't fall under.
"You still awake?" Willow whispered.
"Something like that," Buffy yawned.
"Don't do that!" Willow squeaked, fighting the urge. "It's… it's…" she yawned deeply, eyes watering. "Contagious."
"Sorry," Buffy yawned again. "I'm tired, okay? I'm just too wired to fall asleep."
"Wanna tell ghost stories?" Willow whispered.
Buffy kicked her under the covers. "And get more nightmares?"
"We're already in Giles' bed, we're safe from the nightmares," Willow pouted, reaching down to rub her leg.
The door creaked, as though protesting that statement.
"What was that?" Willow squeaked very softly, under her breath.
"I don't know," Buffy replied, hunkered down close to the covers. She peeked and watched the door open up slowly.
"Ah!" Willow made a tiny yelp and shuffled closer to Buffy, making Buffy scooted closer to Giles until all three were huddled.
"It's in the room," Willow said, her voice low and a cross between a hysteric laugh and whimper. She huddled closer to the slayer, hugging her friend.
When Willow stopped squirming, Buffy could hear the footsteps coming closer to the bed, not hard but very tell-tale. She managed to pry Willow's suffocating arms off of her and lift her head. She yelped and Willow screamed when the covers peeled off.
"What?" Giles woke instantly. "Bloody hell, go to sleep," he grumbled, but the girls were both laughing and half crying from the shock.
Spike scowled at them, his hair mused from sleep and eyes bleary. "Shove over, Red."
"Go away, Spike," Buffy retorted.
"No boys aloud," Willow added. "You have to go sleep with Xander."
"But he smells," Spike whined with a grimace. "Why does Giles get to sleep up here?"
"Because it's his bed and he's cute," Willow answered childishly.
"Make room or I'll drag one of you downstairs," Spike threatened, tugging at the bed sheets.
Buffy tugged back and scooted closer to Giles. She liked him best, anyway, since he was warm and easy to huddle against. Spike packed himself in, forced to press as close to Willow as Buffy did, which didn't bother him.
"You're all cold," Willow complained very softly.
"Happens when you die," Spike snapped. "You'll warm me up in due time. Who's kicking me?"
"No grabbing," Buffy warned Spike gruffly.
"Like I came up here just to cop a feel," Spike snorted, snuggling against Willow.
"Did you have a bad dream too?" Willow whispered.
"No, too many of you left," Spike replied on a sleepy breath, trying to fall asleep near Willow's pulse. "And then Harris started snoring."
"He would," Buffy half laughed.
"Did you notice anything thumping around in the dark downstairs?" Willow asked quietly, to which she only received a grunt against her chest.
"I don't think there's anything down there," Buffy confessed. "I think we both had bad dreams and got scared. We even woke Spike up."
"Your bad dream made me come up here looking for you," Willow countered.
"And you would have done what if I wasn't up here?"
Willow chose to remain silent and it remained that way for several long minutes until Willow's unexpected mixture of laughter and crying roused Buffy from the edge of sleep.
"What?"
"It's Spike," Willow said, nodding the vampire pressed close to her.
"What about him?"
"He's a cuddler," Willow giggled, wiping tears away from her eyes. "He's cuddling."
"No way," Buffy sat up a little, only enough to look at Spike. "He's awake."
Willow shook her head. "He isn't. He asleep and he's cuddling me. He even has bed head. It's too funny!"
Buffy let a laugh slip and Spike woke up a little, sniffled and shifted, coiling himself against Willow even more, laying a hand on her belly. He could feel her stomach move while she silently laughed.
"Sit still," Spike appealed in small voice, nuzzling against her to fall asleep again.
Willow kept in silent laughter as long as she could and finally wiped the last tears from her eyes. She rested her head against Spike's with tired eyes and prepared to fall asleep to his soft purring. Buffy chose to be closer to Giles, finding sleep near her father figure. A half hour passed and all Scoobies were secure in their sleep when the door opened up again, making the girls wake up. Almost immediately Willow began squealing in hysterical laughter and tears again, triggered by her fear of the monster.
Xander stood in the doorway instead, looking bewildered. "Why're you guys all sleeping up here?"
Credits
Reason: My beta, Terra, inspired me when she mentioned something about Giles alone in a house with several hundred slayers and possibly Willow. My reaction: dancing, giggling, salivating. Just imagine! At any given night Giles would have about a dozen girls in his bed needing comfort. "Snuggle closer, girls, I'll protect you!" Yes, Giles is a little grumpy in this fic, but he was just too tired to reason with. He can be a little dense sometimes.
Disclaimer: If I owned these characters, every episode would be like this. Giles would occasionally find himself the crux of an orgy. The season finale would involve Xander being shoved out of bed and Buffy making out with Willow. Spike would be all goggle-eyed and watching, trying to convince Giles to make out with him, too. Sadly, I do not own these characters. Fangirls and Fanboys everywhere weep.
I like putting all of this crap down here once in a while. Keeps people on their toes.
