Chapter 1
The party was in full swing.
Kids were everywhere. Sitting on bales of hay, couples up in the darkened loft
or dancing to the music that was being played by a local garage band. The air
was pungent with the smell of horse shit, sweat and the sweet scent of pot
wafting in on the breeze. Typical high school and college party for a ranch
about an hour north of Los Angeles.
Spike thought he was in
hell. He sighed and took another swig of the burning liquid that someone had
put in his hand. And here he had thought that white lightening was a myth.
Apparently it wasn’t as it burned its way into his stomach.
Damn Drusilla and her fits, Spike thought as he looked around again. If she
hadn’t been such a bitch about them breaking up then he could be back in LA
enjoying civilization. He’d probably be in one of the cool bars doing cool
things but instead here he was in Hicksville. His
friend, Lindsey, had offered to let him accompany him home for spring break.
And this barn party was
their idea of fun.
“Bloody hell,” Spike
muttered, polishing off his drink. He decided he needed another one. Anything
to take the sound of the music they were playing away. He headed in the
direction that he had last seen his friend. The crowd parted for him as he made
his way through. He was as much of a novelty to them as they were to him. He
also figured that didn’t think much of him either. “Hey, Lindsey, my boy…”
Spike started when spotted his roommate but stopped when he saw he was talking
to his sister, Cordelia, and a little blonde he hadn’t met yet.
“Spike, hey,” Lindsey said.
“I’d like you to meet Buffy. Buffy this is Spike.”
“Hello, there little lady,”
Spike said, using his best drunken John Wayne impersonation.
“Asshole,” Buffy said,
turned on her perfect little cowboy boot’s heel and walked away. Spike stared
at her perfect little ass swishing away in tight black denim shorts. They were
stretched as tight across her cheeks as her white tank top had been tight
across her breasts.
“Too bad, ma’am,” Spike
said, “might have been fun riding with you.” It struck him as funny and he
started laughing. He slapped Lindsey on the back. “Riding…get it…”
“Uh, Spike, she’s in high
school,” Lindsey said.
“And I second her opinion,”
Cordelia said, flipping her hair over shoulder. “You’re acting like an
asshole.”
“Is she eighteen?”
A finger was poked into his
chest several times. “Yes, but don’t get any ideas. She’s my best friend and I
won’t have some stupid city boy hurting her.” The finger was jabbed several
times very painfully into his flesh. “Do you understand me?”
“Ouch, come on Cordy,” Spike
said, turning on the puppy dog eyes. He rubbed at where she had poked him. “I was just joking. Feeling out of my element
here and said the wrong thing.”
“Well, go on,” Cordelia
said. “Go find her and apologize.”
There would be no peace
until he had made Buffy feel the warm fuzzies of his presence. It also meant no
more liquor for him. Lindsey adored his sister and if she wasn’t happy, neither
was he. Besides Spike suspected that Lindsey found the whole thing amusing as
his friend hid his laughter behind his hand.
“Fine,” Spike said, handed
Lindsey his empty glass and hurried off to Buffy. “What the hell kind of name
is that?” He asked himself as he moved through the crowd. “Is it short for
Buffina or something? Why am I in this hell?”
“Of course, I’m dating
someone new.”
Spike heard her voice and
didn’t really pay attention to the words. He broke into the clearing where
Buffy was facing off with this big guy with a doofus grin. Her hands were on
her hips and sparks were flying from her green eyes.
“I don’t believe it,” Doofus
said. “I would have heard about it.”
“Well, here he is,” Buffy’s
face lit up when she saw him.
The argument registered with
him just as she reached for him. Her plans clear as she wrapped her arms around
him. Her lips met his and her body melted into his. Spike could feel the
tension in her and reasoned with himself. Cordelia wanted her friend happy.
Lindsey wanted Cordelia happy. He was horny. She was adorable. What the hell?
He shrugged and gathered Buffy closer. One hand tugged her hair back so that he
could kiss her properly while the other settled on her bottom to tug her
closer.
Buffy stiffened only for a
moment then there wasn’t any turning back. She kissed as if her life depended
on it. Her tongue wrapped around his as if it had a life of its own. She
pressed against him, then her legs opened a bit, letting his leg between hers.
They broke apart for a second to breathe then they were on each other again.
His immediate thought was
where the hell could they go to finish this? His second thought was that she
was still in high school so was she legal? And his third thought was, wasn’t
anyone going to stop them?
“Get your hands off of her!”
Doofus said.
They separated. Buffy leaned
against him and he kept his arm wrapped around her.
“She’s with me,” Spike said.
“Aren’t I snookins?”
“Of course, honey bear,”
Buffy beamed up at him while her hand casually moved down to slide into his
rear pocket. “This big brute said that we weren’t dating.”
“Dating, courting, snoggin’,
all technicalities,” Spike said. “You wanna get out of here. Find some place
where there’s not so much conflict.”
There was a flicker of doubt
in her eyes and he figured it was over.
“Uh, I don’t know,” Cordelia
said, breaking through to the clearing. “You know your dad will kill you…”
“Yeah, we wouldn’t want
little Buffy to get in trouble with Daddy,” Doofus said.
“Shut up, Riley,” Lindsey
said. “Leave her alone. You’re the one that broke up with her so you could get
a taste of Nancy so she’s free to do what she wants.”
Spike hadn’t stopped
watching Buffy and at the mention of Riley’s infidelity he saw the hurt in
them.
“Let’s go,” Spike said,
tugging on her hand. “You don’t need to be around someone who obviously isn’t
worth it.”
She lit up again. He figured
his ‘asshole’ status had just gotten changed. Spike led her through the barn.
Her hand wrapped in his. They actually made it all the way to his Desoto before
she slowed down.
“What’s up, pet?”
“I don’t know you,” Buffy
said, chewing her lip. The one he thought tasted delicious. “I mean I know that
you know Lindsey and he thinks you’re great but…I mean after…” She blushed. “I
don’t want you get the wrong idea.”
“Oh, you mean because of the
way you wrapped around me like a cat. And was licking the inside of my mouth
like you found the premium cream that I shouldn’t be thinking by the end of the
night we’ll be shagging in the back of car?”
“Yeah,” Buffy said, but she
had stepped closer to him. “I mean I think you’re very attractive and all but…”
Spike grabbed her, pinned
her between him and the car and kissed her. He kissed her like a man kisses a
woman that he’s sure of, one that he’s already intimate with every part of her
body. His hands moved along her sides, brushing under her breasts before moving
to cup her bottom. Her arms were wrapped around his, her mouth doing things to
him that was driving him crazy. He’d had plenty of girls, women, that he’d
thought that he’d felt it all but this little one was pushing the limits.
He pulled back. “How old are
you?”
“Eighteen,” Buffy whispered,
staring at him. “In January I turned eighteen.”
“I could make love to you by
morning if I wanted,” Spike said with all the surety of knowing that she was
ready right now. “But I’m not going to. Lindsey’s my friend and I’m not going
to start trouble for his sister and her friends. This,” he waved his hand
between them; “I guess was to prove a point.” He sighed. “Look, if you go back
in there. You’re going to lose face. Why don’t we go grab a burger or something
then I’ll bring you back here like a good boy?”
“Okay,” Buffy smiled and
waited for him to open the door before climbing in. She scooted to the middle
and waited for him.
“Oh, is your Daddy like
strict or something,” Spike asked, starting the car. “Cordelia was saying
something about it.”
“Not really,” Buffy said.
“He knows that everyone is watching me.”
“Why is that?”
He turned the car down the
driveway.
“He’s the sheriff.”
