Now and Then
Buffy walked slowly through the night. Drinking in the quiet and
the peace, although she knew those things were just an illusion. But for now,
for this one moment in time, she wanted to enjoy the surrender of the light.
Watching her feet eat up the distance in front of her, she marveled
at the wide array of colors before her. Autumn was swiftly becoming her
favorite time of year. Not that, she reflected, when the bright burst of spring
came she wouldn’t be thinking the same thing of the new season. But for now, it
was fall. Nature taking itself off to regenerate for a new year, but first
preening for the odd passerby all the colors and textures it had. In a way, the
season almost reminded her of the human race. Slowly dying but a beautiful
array of color and life when it was there.
Settling down into the
slight crunch of the grass, she surveyed her personal kingdom. Row upon row of
cement, marking forever the death and birth of her kind. Some she had known,
but most were just faceless epitaphs to people who had loved and lost.
Somewhere out there, was the one that bore her name. Closing her eyes, she
breathed in the pungent aroma of burnt leaves from someone’s lawn, not far off,
and coupled it with the sweet scent of death and decay surrounding her. It was familiar and it was hers.
Loathe to leave, she rose slowly to her
feet and made a leisurely path through the cemetery. There was time for one
more sweep before she had to make her way home. Dawn was bringing home a friend
she had met at school, and had requested the very best of everything she could
cook. Which undoubtedly meant the
friend was male. It was strange not to have her underfoot all the time, but
even kid sisters had to grow up and it was almost a relief when Dawn had
decided to move to the college dorms. The silence of their apartment had been a
blessing and a curse. It had been a liberation that ,for once, all she had to
take care of was herself. But on the other hand it was so much easier to bring
all those nameless faces home with her now. Too easy. She sincerely hoped her
latest conquest had the good sense to be gone before she got back. She smiled
slightly at the word her mind had coughed up. Conquest. The man she had left
sleeping in her bed was just the latest in a long line.
She listened to the light crunch the
dead leaves were making under her feet, and watched the way her shoes crushed
them into ash. She knew where those treacherous steps were taking her, but
didn’t want to examine too closely the symbolic connection of her thoughts
des
destination. Still staring at her feet, she lifted one hand and laid it
reverently against the cold hard surface before her. Not prepared to see, she
closed her eyes and let her mind drift back to last time she had walked out the
door she now caressed so lovingly.
“I want you”
“I can’t loou”
“I’m sorry…William”
Leaning her head against the smooth
surface she allowed a tiny tremor to engulf her frame. She had been so right
then, or more to the point, so righteous. She really missed the times when she
had known all the answers, now she just knew the questions. Time had a way of
making a wise man out of the biggest of fools. Opening her eyes, she stared
hard at the door in front of her. As if by pure will of mind , it would open.
But there was nothing beyond it anymore, hadn’t been in almost four years.
Turning away from the memories she
would never share, Buffy strode off into the night. One more sweep before
dinner. Maybe there would be time to hit the club after. It was so easy to
drown forbidden memories in another man’s body.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“I’m sure she’ll be here any minute.
Buffy is always late”
Dawn smiled nervously at her date as
she mentally cursed Buffy.
“It’s okay if I have you to myself for
a few more minutes”
The grin that slid across Eric’s face
was anything but innocent and Dawn found herself responding to the blatant
invitation in his eyes. Sinking into the couch with him, a slight gasp escaped
her throat as his hand found it's way to her thigh and his lips to hers.
A shrill ring sounded through the
silent apartment and Dawn cursed the sanctity of the phone company. Twisting in
Eric’s grasp she snatched the phone from the end table that resided by the
couch. Coughing slightly to dispel the husky tone her voice had taken, she
snapped at the impertinent intruder on the phone.
“This better be good”
“Dawnie?”
“Oh hey, Willow. Buffy’s not here.” She
slapped playfully at the hands that were currently trying to get under shirt.
“I thought she would be home by now.
You are having dinner tonite,
right?”
“Yah, we’re supposed to be. She’s late,… as usual………..stop it.”
Eric’s hands had abandoned her top and
were in the process of trying to get the button to her jeans undone.
“What…? Stop what?”
Dawn shoved at her boyfriend and
treated him to a resolute glare.
“Nothing. I wasn’t talking to you. You
want me to tell Buffy to call you when she gets…….Oh wait, I think I hear
someone at the door.”
mal>
Rising from the couch, Dawn cradled the
cordless in the crook of her neck and swung open the door.
“Well it’s about time you………”
The phone hit the carpeted floor with a
dull thwap.
The mechanical object emitted a slight
beep and Willow’s disembodied voice was muffled by the floor.
“Dawn…? Dawnie….?”
Dawn stared in horrified fascination at
the two policeman standing at the door, holding the ripped and bloody remains
of her sisters favorite jacket.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“She shouldn’t have to be there for
it….. I mean when we do it…. I don’t think she should see.”
Dawn slowly closed ther tor to her old
bedroom and leaned with her back against it. Trying to control the gulping sobs
that never seemed to leave her body.
Anya’s voice echoed in her mind.
It………they couldn’t even say the words. Sliding down the door, she let her
forehead rest on her knees. They were all in liv living room. Correction.
Buffy’s living room. Contemplating the safest way to kill her sister. Memories
of the last day washed over like a plague. Comments and phrases battered at her
mind.
“Ms. Summers. We need you to identify
your sister.”
“There are teeth marks…….Oh God……She
was bit.”
“I found the orb.”
“We already brought back her soul once”
“The spell didn’t work.”
“She wouldn’t have wanted to live like
this”
“There isn’t much time”
Dawn propped her chin on her knees and
looked around her room. Except it wasn’t her room now and never would be again.
There was no more Buffy. Logically she knew that, her sister was finally and
truly gone. In a few hours a demon would be waking up to take the place of the
golden girl. Alone. Unless those who loved her best got there first.
A surge of panic sent her scrambling
under the bed for a box she hadn’t touched in years. Riffling through it’s contents
she found a small slip of paper. No name, just a series of numbers…….. just in
case.
Twisting the lock on the door, she
grabbed the phone and picked out the long sequence of numbers. There probablasn’asn’t enough time but the sister who had sacrificed everything for her
deserved this chance.
Clutching the receiver, she waited
through many agonizing rings before a muffled and decidedly female voice
answered.
“Is he there?”
“Who is this?”
“Just put him on the goddamn phone!”
She listened to the rustle of what was
obviously bed ss ans and low murmurs until finally the voice she had been
praying for came on the line.
“Yeah”
“It’s me. You need to come now. There
isn’t any time.”
“Bit…? What’s this about.”
“They’re going to kill her before she
has a chance to……. wake up. She should have a chance, at least. Don’t you
think.”
“What are you babbling about. Kill
who?”
“Buffy. She’s a……..well she’s going to
be a…….. Buffy was bitten. You have to come get her, before they……”<
<
Dawn was cut off as the phone lapsed
into silence. Letting it drop to the floor, she stood and unlocked her door.
Making her way cautiously down the hall she observed the intruders in her
sisters house. They were busy gathering weapons and at least, she condoned,
they had the good grace to cry while doing so. Stepping into the room, she
garnered the attention of the group. She didn’t now how long she needed but a
good temper tantrum was always an effective stall.

Spike swung his car into the last
available parking space he could find. Shoving open the door, he flew out of
the seat and hit the ground at a run.
Racing through the mechanical doors of
Sunnydale Memorial Hospital he made his way unerringly to the sil silence of
the morgue.
It had taken him two, panic filled,
hours to get here. Broken every speed limit, taken every shortcut and prayed
the entire time that it was enough.
Skidding to a halt in front of the cold
metal doors he drew in a ragged breath and peered through the warped glass.
His eyes glowed amber as he picked out
the tiny form of Dawn huddled next to a lumpy sheet. He knew what was beneath
it, or rather the potential of what was beneath it. Pushing open the door, he
watched the table for signs of movement. Coming to stand beside Dawn, he heard
her heart pick up speed and the slight intake of breath as she stared at his
ridged face.
“I……told them I wanted to say goodbye
before…..”
Spike turned a cold and uncompromising
gaze on her.
“Say it now, bit. You’ll never see her
again.”
p clp class=MsoNormal>Spike wasn’t sure if it was a sigh of
font-family:"Comic Sans MS";color:blue'>“I love you” she whispered “Be safe”
Dropping her hand she turned away and
moved quietly for the door. Pausing beside him she laid a hand on his arm and
stared for a moment into yellow eyes. Satisfied with what she found, she
whispered a quiet ‘thank you’ and left the room.
Spike walked slowly to the body laid
out in front of him. Gripping Buffy’s chin he twisted her head slightly to the
side and found the twin puncture holes marring her neck.
“How…?”
It was a question he had asked himself
many times in the frantic flight from his warm bed to here. The corpse in front
of him was not giving any answers at the moment, but eventually he would know.
Sliding an arm under her knees and one supporting her back he lifted the dead
girl and swung around. Soon he would know exactly what had happened to make the
girl he had left four years ago into the corpse in his arms.
“I should have known she would call
you.”an>
Spike stiffened slightly at the
presence of the man blocking the door.
“Don’t make this harder than it has to
be , Harris.”
“This is already harder than it has to
be. She wouldn’t want this. You know that. Let her have some peace, finally.”
Spike heard the defeat in Xander’s
voice. Felt the sadness of his duty flow through the room and batter against
him. They had sent the whelp to take out the slayer.
“ Do you remember what I told you the
night she came back.”
Spike watched confusion drift across
his face and then comprehension rear it’s ugly head.
“You said you’d stop us. If any part of
it was Buffy, you wouldn’t let us get rid of her. But Spike you can’t……she’s……”
“She’s not your problem anymore.”
Spike headed for the door, determined
to leave, even if he had to go through the boy to do it. Xander grabbed Spike’s
arm just before he reached the door. After searching the vampire’s face a look
of understanding passed over Xander’s features. Spike watched with quiet
acceptance as Xander ran a finger down Buffy’s face in almost the same gesture
Dawn had. Eyes full of tears and regrets finally looked up into Spike’s and
Xander’s voice broke on his words.
“Never bring her back here Spike……………
Please.”
Spike tightened his hold and pushed
through the doors. He didn’t turn around, but he heard the slight thump as Xander
slid to the floor, and the gut wrenching sobs that racked the man’s body as
Spike’s final words echoed off the walls.
“She’s dead to you. You can bury her
now, once and for all.”
