Reviews for ManchildBy : Rina76 |
One of my favorite stories and one I would love to see continue.
While the ending of this story isn't quite what I'd like (an emphasis on killing rather than loving?), I appreciate his reconciliation with his father. It's what I never got with the series and I'm thrilled to see it handled so expertly here. Thank you for this terrific story.
Seeing that Connor is profoundly sorry for what he has done, Sebastian shifts closer on the bed, laying his hand caringly on the boy’s shoulder. “I like you, babydoll,” he says, heart aching for Connor’s torment. “I don’t care what you’ve done in the past. I’m not going to judge you for things that happened way before we ever met.”
This is where I have to part company with Sebastian’s outlook. It really does matter what a person has done in their past. Learning that Connor has been an accessory to murder is truly shocking, not something you can brush away with “Oh, that was then, this is now. You’re a completely different person. I love you so I’m willing to overlook all that.”
Connor’s past does matter because it helped form the person he became. He states as much to Angel at one point after relating how Holtz once left him tied to a tree in dangerous territory and then left him to free himself and come back home.
Sebastian’s attitude should take this into consideration, pointing out that he’ll love Connor no matter what but Connor has issues to struggle with and iron out and that need to be addressed. Love can’t fix everything if someone is truly broken inside and can result in horrid outbreaks of behavior.
Angel tried desperately to love Connor; Cordelia gave him a magical colonic and Fred was truly kind to him. What happened? He hurt and betrayed them all. It’s far more likely that he’ll hurt Sebastian than that Sebastian will hurt him. Get that boy some serious therapy but don’t hope that love will automatically save the day.
I suppose it was inevitable that this would happen. Connor has ISSUES with a capital I and great sex isn't enough to erase them. Much like Andrew Wells, Connor assisted at murder and used the blood of the murder victim to help bring his demonic spawn into the world. He was never punished for that. In fact, only he, Cordelia and Jasmine ever knew and it's not certain that Cordelia retained the memory of it, seeing as she was inhabited by a demonic presence. That's a horrible deed that Connor has never acknowledged or answered for and you wonder if the bill is ever going to come due.
Even if he's not punished by mortal law, clearly the memory of it is eating him up inside. This must be one of the criseses Sebastian was warned about and it's going to be truly riveting to see how he handles it.
Connor's deepening relationship with Sebastian is a wonder to behold. Several times I've been on the verge of crying with happiness at how they're working towards mutual satisfaction with each other. Normally, I roll my eyes at the idea that sexual activity is enough to bond people together and make them lovers. But there's more going on here than rolling the sheets. Connor opens up about things that are bothering him (not all things; he's yet to tell Sebastian about his twisted deal with Cordelia) and Sebastian is equally forthcoming.
I do want Sebastian to meet Angel. Angel might be flustered at meeting his son's gay boyfriend. But he's been around a lot longer than Connor and he's seen things. Angel might very well surprise Connor with his reaction, especially since Connor's relationships with women haven't always turned out so well.
I'm looking forward to more chapters.
Sebastian is definitely getting an education. This chapter also helps us learn more about Connor, his invulnerabilities, his preferences and his education about demons. It's good to know that he's learned the difference between dangerous and innocuous demons (I still remember his antagonism towards Lorne).
That hotel room sounds marvelous! It's a shame nothing like that exists in real life but that's what fantasy writing can do. Better Than Life has nothing on this!
Your portrayal of Sebastian is so detailed and scrupulous. I can understand why Connor likes him and why others must adore him. He's handsome, sexy, charming, outgoing, kindly, supportive and attentive. He has also proved invaluable in a fight. In the Angelverse, that latter quality counts for a great deal. It's too bad we didn't have someone like him on the show. I might not have ignored the last season of Angel.
I really like Sebastian, far more than I actually like Connor. As outsiders tend to do, he points out what Connor has been overlooking in his contentious relationship with Angel. I would very much like to see Connor return to Angel, to ask him for backstory regarding Angel's past before, during and after Connor's birth. I'd like to read about Angel talking honestly about Holtz and the evil that led Holtz on his 200-year-old vendetta.
I'm not sure where Sebastian would fit in that scenario. But I can imagine Connor defiantly grabbing him by the hand and stating, "This is my lover. Got a problem with that?" That would be a scene worth reading.
I adored this chapter! The meeting between Sebastian and Connor was thoroughly realistic (how else is Connor going to meet people?) and the aftermath made complete sense. Connor's emotions were explored in a way that made me very sympathetic to him; oftentimes, during the TV show, I felt he was a nasty little brat with an insufferable sense of superiority. Here I actually felt sorry for him and wanted him to take his relationship with Sebastian further and saw no reason why it couldn't. Connor isn't necessarily straight just because all of his previous near-brushes with sex were with women and even if he was, so what? When you're attracted to and in love with someone, gender doesn't have to factor into it. He liked Sebastian as a man and a woman.
However, it seems this story has additional chapters. So perhaps Sebastian reconsidered his decision to leave Connor. One can only hope.
